counties, to your neighborhood, now it is complete coverage. it is wjz maryland's news station. >> back from aruba and talking. for the first time we hear from the man held in the disappearance of robyn gardner. >> hello again, here is what people are talking about today. gary giordano is back in the united states but he is not out from under the cloud of suspicion. but on national tv this morning he tried to explain his side of the story in the presumed death of robyn gardner, eyewitness news and gigi barnett live with the latest good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, don, good afternoon, everyone. instead of going home to gaithersburg gary giordano was in new york city, giving his version of events the day his travel companion went missing. back on american soil gary giordano gives his first network news interview this morning since being arrested in aruba, he appeared on good morning america, telling his side of what happened on the

island the day his travel companion and frederick native robyn gardner went missing. >> i feel -- >> -- she -- >> -- cared about, okay, a companion, if you or you, has disappeared on my watch. >> he says gardner was swept out to sea while the two went snorkeling and he frantically searched for her afterwards. he also discussed the $1.5 million life insurance policy taken out on her before the trip. >> there is a holland hand handbook for travelers it tells you what to do. the first thing is call authorities, the second thing is call your insurance company. >> back in august they raided his home. his attorney is the same man who represented casey anthony, he says her disappearance is nothing more than a tragic accident. also in the interview he said that aruba is known for human trafficking and that if he had known that he would have never

taken gardner there. don, back to you. >> and appeals court has denied a request to bring him back, saying prosecutors still lack evidence against him. more potential trouble today for a local cardiologist, the baltimore business journal is reporting nearly two dozen additional lawsuits have been feeled against the former chief of cardiology at st. joseph s medical center. there are now more than 200 suits against him from people who claim they received unnecessary surgeries, he claims he is innocent. the state rests and now the defense begins as attorneys try to improve bob urlich's campaign manager did not break election laws in connection with those 20 between election night robo calls. wjz and derek valcourt are live outside the courthouse with how they plan to do that. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon and the defense did get a minor victory first thing this morning as the judge threw out the charge of obstruction of

justice against bob urlich's campaign manager, saying the state did not offer enough evidence to justify that charge. one down, four more criminal charges for him to go and it comes just one day after he got a boost in his defense from the woman whose voice you hear in those calls, the state's star witness. ronda russell says she was told by her boss, julia henson to record the election night robo call that suggested democrats had already won the election before the polls closed and there was no need to go vote. >> relax, everything is fine. the only thing left is to watch on tv tonight. >> reporter: she testified it was henson who told her not to record the required line saying who paid for it a call that was

great concern for the man still in prison there. good afternoon. >> good afternoon. cuba allowed the general secretary of the national council of churches of christ to meet with gross yesterday. gross is serving a 15 year sentence in cuba for smuggling illegal communications equipment into the country. gross claims he was only trying to help havana's jewish community communicate. >> he has lost a lot of weight and we have concerns for his health and his family also. >> he also met with relatives of 5 imprisoned on charges of spying. >> he has been in prison on cuba now for two years. today is world aids day and

a local effort is seeking to commemorate it by setting a world record. thousands of panchos were handed out. shortly after 11:00 everyone lined up in the shape of a ribbon hoping to be the most ever to do so. as heather reports that is just a small part of what is happening today, 30 years after aids was first identified. >> reporter: young military cadets in southern india rush to hand out flyers in a campaign to work world aids day. hundreds marched through the streets of bangladesh to phrase awareness. this girl says i hope everyone will learn about this disease so he can help stop it from spreading. they lit up the opera house to commemorate the day and called for a new war on aids. >> to get the funding necessary to actually kill this disease once and for all. >> reporter: this red ribbon is she universal symbol of aids awareness.

people are wearing these across london to show support. >> i think they should be talking about it as much as they do in africa, i know it is a bigger problem there but i think here we all think it won't happen to us. >> reporter: this year alone greece has seen a 50% rice in hiv infections especially among drug users, doctors say the economic crisis is causing many drug addicts to use dirty needles. south africa has more people living with hiv than any other country, an estimated 5.6 million. these children living at an aids aids orphanage were infected at birth and are getting treatment. they want to create an aids free generation. >> aids has killed more than 25 million people and more than 33 million people worldwide are living with hiv. weather-wise we have got a
