judgment day. a verdict in the election day robocall scandal trial. >> the jury's decision, and reaction to it. hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> guilty on all counts. a baltimore jury convicts paul schurick for conspiring to suppress the black vote in the 2010 gubernatorial election. derek valcourt has more. >> reporter: in all, it took that jury about four hours of deliberations to hold paul schurick responsible for an effort to suppress voter turnout on election night. >> reporter: the man who once served as top aide to governor bob ehrlich, now walks out of a baltimore courtroom, with a criminal record, four guilty verdicts for his role in the

2010 election night robocall, that jurors agreed was a clear attempt to suppress voter turnout. schurick declined to comment on the verdict and let his defense team do the talking. >> we will take an immediate appeal. >> reporter: schurick says it was meant to inspire voting, rather than suprez it -- suppress it. they suggested it was protected under freedom of speech. >> if you allow the state to create arbitrary and capricious laws, in terms of what fraud is and what have you, and allow that type of prosecution to, in account -- in fact, control, then you throw a dagger in the heart of our political system. >> reporter: it's the first conviction under a 2006 state election fraud loss. the state elections calls it a victory for fair elections. >> and i hope that the jury will send a message. that as i said, this sort of behavior is not just unfair

tactics. it's not just political dirty tricks. it's against the law. and we will enforce it. >> paul schurick faces the possibility of up to 12 years in prison when he is sentenced on february 16th. wjz spoke with some of the jurors about their verdict. you'll hear from them coming up all new at 5:00. we're live at the courthouse, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> campaign consultant and indicted coconspirator, julius henson faces a separate trial in early february. today, a judge throws the book at jack johnson. mike hellgren was in court today for the sentencing. >> a little more than seven years. and he must pay $100,000. johnson begged the court for mercy. and the judge told him, you brought this on yourself. johnson does not have to report to federal prison until february. we have video of him leaving the courthouse here in prince george's county this afternoon. he argued he was too old and sick to go to jail.

the u.s. attorney says he must pay for taking bribes while in office. >> if jack johnson's story were a screenplay, critics would say it's too bizarre to be true. the facts were so egregious, the evidence was uncovered in the course of this investigation, the corruption was so brazen, the people would assume that it's fiction. but unfortunately, it is reality. >> now, johnson admitted to drinking heavily. and a judge ordered him into alcohol treatment. his wife leslie, who was on the county council will be sentenced friday for hiding bribe money in her underwear. new at 5:00, we'll tell you what expensive piece of property the feds confiscated from johnson's home yesterday. >> she takes the oath of office. but today, baltimore mayor stephanie rawlings-blake takes part in her very first inauguration ceremony. wjz is live. political reporter pat warren has more on all of the pomp and circumstance. >> reporter: good evening, everybody. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake

numerous bullet holes wjz found inside the odenton home. wjz shot this exclusive video inside the home. our cameras found at least five bullet holes. the incident began after an arrest was made at the house. while officers were searching the home, a city officer was hit by a bullet in the hands. feeling he was in danger, he fired his weapons several times. at last check, the city police officer is being treated at shock trauma, with nonlife- threatening injuries. kai? >> denise, thank you. the man arrested with 27 pounds of marijuana. he was released on bail this morning. >> our unusual december weather continues outside. it is rainy, but very mild. rain could turn into something else in the next day or two. wjz has weather and traffic together. we'll talk to kristy in just a second. but we'll head over to bob with first warning weather. bob? >> more like warm, april and may. take a look at radar. we have a batch of rain moving across the region.

an historic settlement to the families of those killed in the worst mining accident in decades. the owners where 29 men died last year has agreed to pay $200 million in settlements. federal officials released the final report today, detailing hundreds of safety violations. a woman is dead after falling 75 feet into the water from the queen mary ocean liner in california. authorities say the woman was apparently drinking with her boyfriend beforehand and lost her balance. she later died at the hospital. a man jumped in to save her. he was taken to the hospital for hypothermia. there's no word on his

condition. the former cruise ship is now a hotel and museum. a 14-year-old boy drowns during swim class. now his family is speaking out. david quinlan has more on what exactly happened with their son. >> reporter: as classes started with wenatchee high school monday, family of 14-year-old antonio reyes launched a verbal attack against the school district. >> why did my child drown when there were so many different teachers and -- students and a teacher there. >> reporter: the freshman drowned last month during a swim class. police say he was discovered in the pool, unresponsive by his classmates, coming in for his next class an hour later. >> he was never tested for his swimming ability. and he did not know how to swim. >> reporter: an attorney filed this claim against the district today, seeking $15 million in damages. antonio's father says the district has told them nothing about how his son drowned in class. >> what happened? he's going to say, i don't

know. >> in a statement today, the wenatchee school district says it is unable to comment on the torte claim, but it did say it continues to extend its condolences to the family. the district says it has communicated with the family on multiple occasions. meantime, the involved staff member will remain on leave. >> and the reyes family isn't the only one demanding answers. in fact, antonio's classmates are as well. many of them are still grieving today. >> he was a nice kid, you know? he had a good heart. he was nice to everyone that he met. >> they're still crying a little bit. but we remember him very well. >> reporter: his friends and parents are having an even harder time dealing with the death of their son. >> i feel desperate. i feel -- [ speaking in spanish ] >> now i feel empty. >> reporter: the district is reviewing its procedures. we will continue to follow this story and let you know if the reyes family moves forward with the lawsuit. >> reporter: and that was david

a little snow this morning in missouri and northern arkansas. yeah. they had some snow again in southern new mexico, roz well. they have palm trees there. they had snow there. northern portions of texas. this whole area of rain, evolving from a low pressure moving through our region, mostly to the west. another is developing across the south. and that's going to pass just to our south. that will bring in more rain tomorrow. however, once it passes our area, colder air will begin to filter in. maybe just enough cold air for a quick changeover for a couple of hours of wet snow, early on thursday morning. i'm talking 3, 4, 5:00 a.m. maybe just before drive time thursday. might see some wet snow on the lawns, north and west of the city. however, north and west of us, i'm talking garrett county, we'll have enough cold air for some accumulations. in fact, the weather service has just issued a little while ago, a winter storm warning for garrett county and some of the neighboring counties.

west virginia and allegheny county. and somerset p.a., a winter storm warning watch. how much? across central maryland, a trace to maybe an inch on some lawns. 1 to 3 expected in this area. maybe in the pretty boy dam area. 3 to 5 inches. maybe up to 7 inches of snow. that would be on thursday morning. north winds on the bay, they will be changing there. 5 to 10 knots. bay temp, around 50 degrees. tonight, look for the rain. mild. 56 for a low. remember, the streets are very, very warm. so it will just melt, for the most part. rain temps falling during the day. 58, starting out. probably this time tomorrow, maybe mid- to upper 40s, down to the mid-30s by thursday morning. that's when you can see that wet snow. not from the city or neighboring suburbs. 30, 40 miles north and west. maybe a couple of inches of wet snow thursday morning. >> all right, bob.

it is 4:29. 62 degrees and rainy. hello, everyone. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about. >> rocked by bombings. two suicide attacks kill dozens and injure hundreds. this is the worst attack since the taliban. >> reporter: the first blast hit during religious ceremonies near a mosque in kabul. a suicide bomber killed more than 50 people and wounded more than 160 others. survivors held shoes of the dead and wept in the streets. several more afghans died in a second blast in the northern city of plaza rishariff. a bomb strapped to a bicycle, exploded near a mosque. the attacks happened on the shiite holy day of assura. the taliban denied responsibility and contem

demmed -- condemned the violence. attacks on religious days are rare. afghan president hamid karzai called the first attack scope. he spoke from germany, a day after afghanistan's western allies pledged long-term support, once their combat troops leave the country. president obama has pledged to pull u.s. forces out by the end of 2014. heather cobar, wjz eyewitness news. >> the biggest event in the shiilate calendar, making the large processions of worshipers a target for military attacks. guilty on all charges. that is the verdict today for former maryland governor robert ehrlich's campaign manager. paul schurick was convicted of election fraud for his role in the 2010 election day robocall.

schurick now faces up to five years in prison. his sentencing is scheduled, february 16th. and a former prince george's county executive, also learned his fate today on corruption charges. jack johnson was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison. he was also slapped with a $100,000 fine. prosecutors said johnson steered milliops of dollars -- millions of dollars to developers in bribes. wjz will have much more on the schurick and the johnson cases, coming up new at 5:00. former illinois governor rod blagojevich will soon learn how long he'll have behind bars. >> that's right, vic. after being convicted on 18 counts of corruption. blagojevich now faces up to 20 years behind bars. today, the governor lost a bid for leniency that he wanted to collect based on failure for his money scheme.

the defense alleges blagojevich was being manipulated by staffers and advisers. they are pushing for a 15- to 20-year prison sentence. this is a two-day sentencing with the actual sentence being issued tomorrow. senior citizens, strip- searched. a second and a third elderly woman say tsa agents went too far at a new york airport. kathryn brown has the story for wjz. >> they took me into a private room and strip-searched me. >> and that was the first time i had to do that. >> reporter: ruth sherman and lenore zimmerman don't know each and other and they weren't traveling together last weekend. but the women have strikingly similar stories. >> she said, will you pull your pants down, please? and then she pulled my underwear down. >> please remove your pants, lower your parents. that's what i did. >> reporter: both women say they were forced to take off their clothes in a private screening room at jfk last weekend, one day apart, as an extended patdown of ts a

averages. >> this 85-year-old woman, they thought needed to be strip- searched. >> they point out, not all terrorists look like terrorists. and he says the incident highlights a frustrating problem. >> they're having cases overseas, where elderly people and young children have been used to conceal bombs and explosives. so i understand why the tsa is concerned but you can't treat everyone the same. >> the tsa is getting better and better at finding the balance between security and privacy. but as this case shows, they still have a ways to go. >> reporter: the tsa is looking into what happened and says it has interviewed the agents involved in both incidents, but issued a statement saying, quote, the tsa does not include strip searches as part of our security protocols. and one was not conducted in this case. but there are no security cameras in the private screening rooms. so it boils down to a he said, she said. state senator michael denaris is shocked and is demanding a

deeper investigation. >> where there's smoke, there's fire. ask it seems that we have tsa agents that are crossing the lines in terms of searching the passengers. >> reporter: and now, a third elderly woman has come forward with similar claims. linda callish, who is diabetic, said she was forced to strip to show jfk agents an insulin pump attached to her thy. early -- thigh. several students are scheduled to testify against jerry sandusky. lawyers say the six young men who testified before the grand jury, will be called to testify again next tuesday. sanch dusky is -- sandusky is accused of molesting eight boys over a 15-year span. destroying evidence in the gulf oil spill. mary is live in the newsroom with what they say energy company covered up. >> reporter: according to bp, halliburton destroyed evidence about the quality of cement that went into trilling the oil well that blew out last year.

bp says an oil well must be cemented properly to avoid a blowout. the companies have been sparring over blame for the april 2010 deep water horizon blast. it leaves millions of gallons of crude oil into the gulf of mexico. bp also accuses halliburton of failing to produce incriminating evidence. >> halliburton calls the accusations untrue. >> fire investigators say a kitchen fire is what caused a three-alarm blaze in northwest baltimore. broke out late friday night in the 6500 block of red cedar place. officials say a tea kettle was left in the stove in one of the units. no one was hurt. but nearly 100 senior citizens were displaced. the new maryland casino is hoping to put hundreds to work. maryland live casino at arundel mills is looking to fill certain management conditions. officials say more jobs will be filled later.

but suggests applicants roll the dice. the first phase of the operation will open in june. mild weather comes with gray skies and rain. but there is a change on the way. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk has the weather and traffic now. by this time tomorrow afternoon, we'll be back in the upper 40s, beginning to cool down. right now, we have rain and drizzle and some fog in the region. it's all moving in from the southwest, as you can see. take another look around. around the city now, it's been very spotty. spotty light rain. and a little drizzle. a little heavier where it goes to rock hall, chestertown and queenstown. and west of us, very light, spotty rain. with us tonight, we'll see rain from time to time. and there will be more coming our way, tomorrow and tomorrow night. eventually, it will begin to cool down. so that maybe by 2:00, 3:00 in the morning, some of that rain, north and west of the city, will probably mix with or

tearing down a home linked to a serial killer. officials are knocking down a home where he lived. neighbors say it will help bring closure closer. police found 10 bodies and a skull in that house in late 2009. 52-year-old anthony sewell is appealing the death sentence. a raging fire breaks out at a power plant in arizona. the cause of the fire is unknown but only 30,000 gallons of oil are burning. fire officials say there is a risk of mineral oil overflowing into neighboring homes if too much water is used to put out

the flames. the smoke is nontoxic and no homes or businesses have been harmed. radiation in the water. a leak at the the nuclear plant in japan, could have dangerous consequences. andrea fujii has the latest. there is more trouble for the fukushima diitchy -- daiichi plant. workers found water leaking from a crack in a concrete barrier. it was used near equipment used to purify sea water. it is not clear whether that contamination has reached the water system. they were able to stop the leak by packing sandbags around the crack. it's still unclear how many gallons leaked out. the japanese bombed pearl harbor 70 years ago tomorrow, putting the u.s. into world war ii. sandra hughes traveled to pearl

harbor with very special veterans. >> reporter: big band music was a reminder of the year. it was 1941. and 94-year-old archie gregory was a young sailor. >> you've never been back since this happened? >> no. i didn't want to come back. >> reporter: the memories were just to painful. gregory was standing on the deck of the uss arizona, visiting a friend when the bomb started dropping. >> it exploded. i flew through the air. >> there aren't many pearl harbor survivors left. this year may be the last time many can travel. >> almost 2400 people died during the attack on pearl harbor. most were sailors on the battleship. but there were also marines. >> reporter: greg garland was one of only 80 marines depatched -- detached to the navy. just 91 years old, he enlisted.

[ laughter ] >> why did you join the marines? >> they had some balloons. and i thought i'd like a pair of blues. >> he can laugh about it now. but half of the marines died in the attack. their names etched in stone at the memorial over the uss arizona. the battleship remains are a tomb for the sailors who died on board. >> these people stood between us and absolute destruction. they gave their lives willingly. >> reporter: bravery that will be remembered and honored on december 7th. sandra hughes, wjz eyewitness news. >> a pearl harbor memorial ceremony will be held by the historic ships in baltimore tomorrow at the inner harbor. a woman is in critical condition after walking into a moving plane propeller. in texas, it was a horrible accident in dallas, when 23- year-old lauren jugs was hit -- scruggs was hit by a propeller plane. scruggs suffered a fractured

skull, severe cuts cuts and had her left hand amputated. she is recovering in the hospital. her family said no one is at fault. the faa is investigating. parents may be to blame for people to quit struggling with smoking. nicotine addiction could be genetic. researchers looked at twins. and nearly 65% quit within a year of each other. identical twins share the same dna. a 12-person task force is now involving the pepper spraying of a student at the uc davis campus. >> reporter: along with former supreme court justice, several other nonstudents rounded out the list. including uc davis law professor. the four students on the committee are either law students or have played a role in uc davis student government.

>> we wanted the uc davis community to be well represented. >> reporter: the other members tasked with figuring out what went wrong on november 18th, include faculty and staff at uc davis, in addition to two staff. the president's office used recommendations from davis's organization. >> the whole idea was to take a fair and uncompromising look at what happened. >> reporter: some say they're not sure that will happen. >> it's just, i don't know how it was selected. or whether it's a particular committee or whether there was a level of tranparency. >> reporter: what's more, the president's representatives couldn't tell us if the task force will have any world power in implementing change. >> it's been formed so that the recommendations are heard. and -- i meerntion that's about all i can say right now. >> reporter: and then there are some who say a task force is pointless. >> reporter: seems like a waste of time. >> everyone knows what

happened. i could tell you what happened. you know. there were hundreds of people there who could tell you what happened. >> they want the attention back on cuts to education and tuition increases. the message before the pepper spraying began. >> that's what needs to be investigated by a board of people. >> reporter: that was jackie beckford reporting. the university says it is aiming for a report to go to the task force the first weekend in january. lady gaga is coming to the white house. the pop singer is meeting to talk about her work on bullying prevention. the administration estimates bullying affects 13 million students. about one-third of those attending school. thousands of coins will be dropped into red salvation army cetlezs this holiday -- kettles this holiday season. but probably not like one in tulsa, oklahoma. someone dropped a coin, a gold liberty coin, wrapped in a dollar bill over the weekend. it's believed to be worth about $1800. the salvation army says it

here's a live look outside right now. it was kind of nasty today. but warm. >> muggy. >> warm is right. temperatures running 12, 15 degrees above normal at least. upper 50s to low 60s. that's where we are now. take a look at temperatures around the region. very warm afternoon. 62. humidity is way up. dew point is at 60 degrees. humidity, 93%. south/southwest winds, 7. the barometer, currently holding steady. around the area, 52 in oakland. 57 in washington. 65 in pax river. it was 70 in virginia, southeast virginia this afternoon. 58 in ocean city. once again, high dew point. a lot of moisture, light rain around the region.

that will continue on and off throughout the night. the rain will probably get steady and heavier later in the day tomorrow. ask then it gets colder during the day tomorrow. and we'll have interesting things to tell you about. southwest winds now. during the day, they'll start turning more to the north. as one low pressure passes, it will allow the winds to shift back to the west/northwest. allowing cooler air to filter in. it will be getting cooler during the day tomorrow. and by later tomorrow night, maybe after midnight, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 in the morning. it may just be cold enough baltimore region north and west for that rain to mix with and change to wet snow for a few hours before it gets out of here quickly. now, in garrett county, that change will be quicker. could see snow by tomorrow evening, continuing into early thursday. that's where we expect to see some heavy amounts. right now, pretty good amount of rain. from new york to our south and southwest. it's breaking up somewhat. but we do have rain on tap tonight. and again during the day tomorrow once again. and sooner or later, that chilly air will be filtering

in. cooler air, the mild air continues overnight tonight into the morning hours. and during the day, here comes the cool air. that low pressure passing by. it does. we have a few-hour period, late, late tomorrow night, into thursday morning, where we could see a change to some snow. so much so that out to the west, winter storm warning, garrett county. and a winter storm watch. for the higher elevations. allegheny and western virginia. flood watch. trace to an inch is possible. mainly on the lawns. the ground is so warm. roads are 60 degrees right now. north and west, we're coming down a little longer. 1 to 3 inches of wet snow possible. in the far western mountains. 3 to 5 inches. some elevations could get 5, 6, 7 inches out there. and just rain south and east of the city. north winds on the bay. that's thursday morning. late, late wednesday night. bay temp around 50 degrees. tonight, rain, drizzle, temperatures warm, 56. yeah, maybe some fog tomorrow.
