today, say jury finds paul schurick guilty in election fraud, trying to stop people from going to vote. >> reporter: and it took those jurors just four hours to reach a verdict in the first case ever tried under this success maryland election law. >> reporter: ehrlich campaign manager paul schurick said nothing after a jury convicted him on four charges, relating to the 2010 election night robocall, a call the jury agreed was intended to suppress african american voter turnout. schurick's attorneys promise an appeal. >> the attempt from the state to regulate the content of political speech is unconstitutional. >> reporter: three jurors told wjz, they took issue with wording in the robocall that made it sound like it was coming from the democratic party, and not the campaign. republican bob ehrlich. it was language, paul schurick admitted he approved. >> he is a nice guy. but even nice guys do wrong things. >> it was the last minute,

they're losing. and it's kind of like, we drop back and punt it. and it didn't go so well. >> the question of the vote or confusion to suppress the vote is a very big problem. because our country is founded on the right to vote. >> it's a victory for state prosecutor emmett daffit, who hopes the conviction sends a message. >> that this sort of behavior is not just unfair tactics, not just political dirty tricks. it's against the law. and we will enforce it. >> schurick is scheduled to be sentenced on february 16th. now, on that date, he faces the possibility of up to 12 years in prison, although it is very unlikely he will do that much time at all. meanwhile, his coconspirator, accused coconspirator, julius henson is scheduled to go on trial in early june. >> and former governor bob ehrlich just released this statement to wjz, saying in part, quote, while i vehemently disagree with the decision from the baltimore city jury, i do

respect our legal decision. i do continue to support my friend paul schurick. firefighters have been struck by a light rail train on west patapsco avenue in south baltimore. we're working to get more details on the victim's victim's condition on how this happened. buses are now transporting passengers while the light rail is stopped for investigation. new information tonight about the sex assault inside an anne arundel county school. a 14-year-old boy is now charged with attempted rape. the investigation began when a female student said he was attacked inside a bathroom. the suspect was served on a juvenile citation. he's been released to the custody of a relative. school officials have been working. >> police say the crime came to light when the school received an anonymous tip. a once powerful maryland politician who was caught on tape, mocking efforts to investigate him, is headed to federal prison.

mike hellgren reports from prince george's county on the fate of former county executive and state's attorney jack johnson. >> reporter: johnson will get more than seven years in prison. his lawyers called that a death sentence. >> reporter: johnson, once the leader of maryland's second largest county, sold has office, accepting bribes from developers, prosecutors say worth more than $1 million and then laughing off the investigation. >> you know, able to bring somebody like me down, they brag their whole career. you know, our jobs. >> reporter: but he was not laughing in federal court when a judge ordered him to pay $100,000, seized his classic 1953 mercedes like this one, and sentenced him to seven years and three months in federal prison. >> corruption was so brazen, the people would assume that it's fiction. butun fortunately, it's reality. >> reporter: his lawyers begged the court for mercy, saying johnson now suffers from

parkinsons disease and is close to being confined to a wheelchair. but video showed him playing golf after that. the judge said, you were not elected to line your pockets. you brought this on yourself. >> he knew he was under investigation. but he laughed it off and put it in his pocket. >> put it in your panties, leslie. >> oh, my god. >> johnson told the court in my wildest dreams, i couldn't imagine being in a place like this. i work so hard in the county, i want to apologize to the people in prince george's county and my wife. i accept my responsibility and i'm haunted by that. judge, i've lost everything. >> reporter: prosecutors called leslie johnson, his most trusted conspirator. she'll be sentenced on friday. at federal court, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: johnson will report to prison, february 3rd. rain is moving through

tonight. and could see snow this week. that's right. outside, it's overcast and mild. but we're tracking some big changes. let's check in with bob turk for a look at first warning doppler radar. bob? >> gotta remember, it is december. and these weather conditions have been way abnormally high. right now, light rain in the area. very light rain moving through the region. the heaviest stuff is moving across delaware and jersey. around the city, very light, spotty rain. and a little drizzle and fog. eastern shore, still had that rain. but it's moving out of that area. west of us, not a whole lot. very widely scattered showers. for tonight, won't be all that wet, but we'll see some rain from time to time. and during the day tomorrow, this rain will be moving out. more rain moving in. and eventually, low pressure passing to our south, will allow some colder air to begin filtering in during the day. by tomorrow night, garrett county will start seeing snow. in our region, by early thursday morning, there's a chance we will see some snow across the region for a few hours early thursday, before you go to work. most of it around our region,

just on the lawns, the ground is so warm, the streets are right now, around 60 degrees. so on the trees and the grass, you might see a little snow on thursday morning. north and west of us, 20, 40, 50 miles north and west. there may be as much as 1 to maybe 3 inches. maybe again on the lawns and trees. new information tonight about what went wrong during a drug raid in anne arundel county. the operation ended when a police officer was shot and rushed to shock trauma. wjz is live. mike schuh explains how it it all happened. mike? >> police did make a huge drug arrest. but they injured one of their own. and they left behind a big mess inside their home of a woman who was unaware was -- of what was happening on her own front porch. >> the retired neighbor in this house lets her friends send their packages to her door. that's just what happened right before the cops showed up on monday. >> the homeowner tells me, she didn't even think about it,

opened the door, signed for a package from the deliveryman like she's always done, didn't even look at the package or who it was from, left it on the stoop and went inside. then 10 minutes later, the police task force arrived with a search warrant. >> inside, andre jackson is arrested as he collects the package, containing reever. officers go inside to check for accomplices. hardly in the front door, an accident. >> there was an accidental weapon discharge by baltimore county police officer, on the task force. the result of that was he struck a baltimore city police officer on the task force. >> reporter: the detective who was shot starts shooting. >> believing that they were under fire at the time, also discharged mr. r -- their weapon several times. >> reporter: being questioned upstairs, the homeowner. >> this is so crazy. >> reporter: the detectives' bullets go through the wall, five of them. >> this is crazy. >> reporter: the back door slider, shot out. >> there's a bullet hole right

an airport security debate is under way, after two women claim they were strip searched by the tsa. lawmakers and homeland security experts are now weighing in on

this controversial story. >> they took me to a private room and strip-searched me. >> and that was the first time i had to do that. >> reporter: ruth sherman and lenore zimmerman don't know each other and weren't traveling together last weekend. but the women have strikingly similar stories. >> she said, well, pull your pants down, please. and she pulled my underwear down. >> please remove your pants, lower your pants and that's what i did. >> reporter: both women said they were forced to take off their clothes. one day apart as part of an extended search. >> this 84-year-old woman, they thought needed to be strip searched. >> reporter: tsa points out, not all terrorists look like terrorists. >> there have been cases overseas, where elderly people and young children have been used to conceal bombs and exploses. -- explosives. so i understand why the tsa is

concerned but you can't treat everyone the same. >> reporter: the tsa is getting better and better at finding the balance between privacy and security. but they still have a long way to go. >> reporter: they issued a statement, saying, quote, the tsa does not include strip searches as part of our security protocols and one was not conducted in this case. but there are no security cameras in the private screening rooms. so it boils down to a he said- she said. state senator michael denaris is outraged at what the two women said happened and at the agency's response, and he's demanding a deeper investigation. >> where there's smoke, there's fire. and it seems we have tsa agents that are crossing the line in terms of their search of passengers. >> a third elderly woman has since come forward with similar claims at jfk airport. linda callish. she was diabetic said she was forced to show tsa agents an insulin pump attached to her

thigh. >> here's christy kristy breslin with wjz traffic coal. >> reporter: definitely some trouble out there on northbound 95. the delay, a solid haf hour there from the fort mchenry tunnel. as far as the beltway itself goes, 45 minutes to 95. outer loop not doing too much better. 30 minutes in that direction from 95 to greenspring avenue. and if you're traveling on the west side inner loop, plenty of brake lights there, from wilkens avenue to security boulevard. average speed, as you can see from our sensor there, about 16 miles an hour. 29 to marriottsville road. and a couple of new accidents out there, east ridgely at pot spring road. pulaski highway, at woodbridge court in the edgewood area. and in abingdon, north emerton bypass at singer road. things are bumper to bumper. that's a look at the beltway. that's greenspring avenue. and we'll take another live look. you can see pretty heavy there, the beltway at the 83.

and there may be some fog, where you have light rain and drizzle in the region now. rightright now, locally, 60 in westminster. 57 in washington. only because the breeze is coming off the potomac. 60 in annapolis. and rock hall. southerly winds. there you see. keep us in this warm air throughout the night. but during the day tomorrow, the winds will begin to turn a little more to the negotiate and northwest. and eventually, the northeast. and that will begin to bring in cooler air. during the day, the temperatures will be dropping. it will be raining. by tomorrow night, it will be chilly, damp, rain. could be even heavy at times. and then by early thursday morning. maybe as early as midnight around here. colder air moving in. could see a mix of wet snowflakes if they're mixed in. and it could snow for a while before it quickly moves out thursday morning. to the west of us, that's where we expect to see the most accumulations as it is normally the case around here. you see the rain this

afternoon. it's kind of spotty down to our south and southwest. but we'll see rain moving through tonight. this low will get through here. while it may be cold enough, to the west of us, where it's going to get colder quicker, that's where we expect to see snow. in fact, garrett county, winter storm warning. they could see 4 to 5 to 6 or 7, 8 inches. here's how i'm playing it now. trace to an inch in central maryland. 1 to 3 north and west. mainly on the lawn again. 3 to 5. higher elevations could see 6 or 7. northeast winds. and that is for thursday morning, by the way. north winds, 5 to 10 knots. late, late wednesday night, thursday morning. small craft advisory by the afternoon tomorrow. bay temp around 50. tonight, then we'll see rain and drizzle and mild temperatures. 56 and fog as well. tomorrow, rain, temperatures slowly falling from 58 down to the 40s tomorrow evening.

it is frief:30. 62 degrees with rain in the area. good evening, everybody. and thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. 900 gallons of gasoline. that's the explosive cargo firefighters were up against following a taker crash in prince george's county. alex demetrick reports on the collision and the long cleanup. >> heavily traveled route 3 in buoy was sealed off monday night after a car and two trucks collided. investigators say this box truck struck the rear car and swerved toward a second truck, hauling 900 gallons of gasoline. >> the driver apparently tried to evade the crash. struck the back of the box truck. and went into the median and overturned. this began a potentially explosive situation. >> about 100 gallons of fuel

did spill and posed enough of a danger but the source did not come from inside the tanker. >> troopers told me that they believed the only fuel that spilled was actually coming out of the gasoline tanks, the fuel tanks to that tractor-trailer, not the trailer itself. so we were fortunate overall that there was not an explosion. >> alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> no worn was seriously injured in the accident. the debris was finally cleared during the morning commute. >> some of the young men who accused former penn state coach jerry sandusky are prepared to go to court. >> reporter: the six young men who testified before a grand jury are prepared to testify again next week. they will speak at sandusky's sandusky's hearing the 62-year- old is accused of molesting at

least eight boys. the jury will determine if prosecutors have enough evidence to take them to trial. sandusky vows to fight the charges. kai? >> a baltimore-based lawyer is representing one of the victims in the case. very intense moments for passengers when a deadly shootout erupts on board an amtrak train. this happened in dallas, near the city's union station. police say three undercover narcotics officers confronted a suspect on the train. but the man pulled out a gun and started shooting. police returned fire. the gunman and the innocent bystander were injured. they're expected to be okay. key evidence in the gulf oil spill. bp claims halliburton got rid of damaging documents so they can't be used at trial. the documents reportedly detail problems with halliburton cement that went into drilling the oil well that blew out last year causing the oil spill off

the louisiana coast. bp is asking a judge to order a foz forensics team. halliburton says the accusations are baseless. >> suicide bombers strike afghanistan. these are the worst attacks since the fall of the taliban 10 years ago. heather covar reports for wjz. dozens are dead, and many others are hurt. >> reporter: the first blast hit during religious ceremonies in kabul. survivors held shoes of the dead and wept in the streets. several more afghans died in a second blast in the northern city of plaza -- mazahishariff. the attacks happened on the shiite holy day of ashoura. afghanistan has a history of

violence between sunnis and the shiite minority but attacks on religious days are rare. afghan president hamid karzai, calls the first attack unprecedented in scope. it happened near the presidential palace where he lived. he spoke from germany, a day after afghanistan's pledged allies pledged long-term support. president obama has pledged to pull u.s. forces out by the end of 2014. heather cobar, wjz eyewitness news. >> ashoura is the biggest event in the shiite muslim calendar, making the procession of worshipers. >> the victims of america's worst coal mining disaster in decades will receive a big payout. the owners of west virginia's upper big branch mine has agreed to pay nearly $20010,000 -- $2 tenz,000 in history --

$210,000 in historic settlements. president obama heads to america's heartland, trying to sell his tax plan to the middle class. danielle nottingham reports for wjz. lawmagers have -- lawmakers have just four weeks to strike a deal. >> president obama laid out his case for economic fairness, in support of hundreds of supporters. packed into a kansas high school. >> this is a make-or-break moment for the middle class. >> reporter: the president channeled his predecessors, saying that all americans deserve a shot at financial security. republican president theodore roosevelt delivered a small town plea. president obama argued that fair shot includes extending the payroll tax break, set to expire at the end. month. >> if we don't do that, the 160 million americans, including most of the people here, will see their taxes go up by an

average of $1,000. >> reporter: both parties say they want an extension, but lawmakers are still at odds over how to pay for it. in an effort to try to bridge the gap, two senators offered a bipartisan proposal tuesday. >> their plan would pay for the extension with the 2% tax on millionaires and provide an exception for small business owners. >> so we're protecting the owner-operator, on the front lines, running the business, creating those jobs. >> reporter: still, it may not be enough to convince fellow lawmakers. many republicans insist any tax hikes would damage economic growth. the white house is using a countdown clock to remind lawmakers, time is running out to reach a deal. in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> the bipartisan proposal is one of several plans being floated around capitol hill. the senators have voted down two so far, one proposed solely

the wrong guy to rob. police say 24-year-old anthony miranda attempted to steal from an ultimate fighting champion. miranda demanded money. but the ufc fighter got out and fault back. miranda suffered two black eyes, bullets and bruises to his hip. he's charged with armed robbery. a 230-pound body builder. 22-year-old rubin arzu was apparently under the influence weapons and drugs. it took four officers and two stun gun blasts blasts and four sets of handguns to restrain him. arzu was booked on attempted homicide. a car smashes through the front of a restaurant. diners say they watched the vehicle head straight for them. one angle of surveillance video shows the car hitting a man. we saw that send him flying several feet back inside.
