shots foured at virginia tech. two people are killed and the campus is locked down. hi. i'm kai jackson. mary is off. here's what people are talking about. we have breaking news. a gunman is on the loose, after shooting and killing two people at virginia tech. one of the victims, a police officer. alexis christoforous begins wjz complete coverage with more on what is happening right now in blacksburg, virginia. >> reporter: officers suited up as law enforcement vehicles poured onto the campus of virginia tech. the campus is under lockdown, as an army of officers looks for a man who shot and killed two people. >> i could see his face. and he was covered in blood. i don't know if the blood was coming from his head or his face, exactly. >> reporter: one was a police officer, shot while making a routine traffic stop in a campus parking lot. the shooter, described as a white male, wearing gray pants and a maroon hoody, then fled

on foot and shot another person in a second parking lot. >> we have many law enforcement agencies here. they have a description of the suspect. they are searching all buildings, all public areas, outdoors, indoors, we're looking absolutely everywhere. >> reporter: the manhunt is reminiscent of a shooting on campus. 33 people died in 2007 in what was the deadliest mass shooting in modern history. that tragedy prompted an overhaul of the university's emergency notification system. today, students and faculty were told to stay put, indoors, via a flurry of alerts via their phone and social media. >> we continue to provide updates as often as we can. and then we'll continue to keep people apprised of what we know. >> reporter: on the campus newspaper's twitter account, students posted real time accounts. but there were fewer people out and about today, as there were no classes in session.

students are preparing for the start of final exams. alexis christoforous, wjz eyewitness news. >> our complete coverage of the virginia tech shooting continues. denise is in the newsroom with more. denise? >> reporter: well, kai, interstate 81 is closed right now. it is unclear if it's related. the suspect police are locking for as we told you a moment ago, the white man, wearing gray sweat pants, a gray hat, with a neon brim and a maroon hoody with a backpack. the student who is currently locked down spoke to our sister station just a moment ago. nobody knew what happened. then we -- there are police officers across the street in the parking lot, with assault rifles and stuff. and they came into the building. and everybody was in the recreation room. and then the lecture hall.

and then we saw the combat uniforms came into the recreation room and moved everybody quickly upstairs. >> now, the university is sending updates to students about every 30 empties, regardless of whether they have any new information or not. kai? >> all right, denise, thank you. wjz has the latest on the virginia tech shooting. two people killed this afternoon. including an officer. that officer was killed during what is called a routine campus stop. students are not allowed to go inside. the gunman is still on the loose. stay with wjz for complete coverage of the shooting. we will continue to update you on the search for the gunman throughout this evening's newscast. out on bail. former penn state coach jerry sandusky posts $250,000 bond. he is released with $100,000 in -- $200,000 real estate holdings and $50,000 certified check from his wife.

in all, sandusky faces more than 50 charges charges and is accused of molesting 10 boys. sued for sex abuse. an accuser discredited by the prosecutor is filing a lawsuit against former syracuse basketball coach bernie fine. 23-year-old zachary thomaselli claims fine molested him on a trip to pittsburgh in 2002 when he was a boy. he said he is filing a lawsuit to rebut claims by fine's attorney, and a prosecutor, who claims the man's claims are not fineable. fine has not been charged with any crime. a teenager is behind bars, charged with having sex with his students. >> reporter: the man in question has been an english teacher here at glen burnie high school since 2002. he was also an assistant coach for the boy's junior varsity basketball team. but now, he's an accused child abuser who stands to lose his job and his freedom. >> reporter: 29-year-old jeffrey sears, jr., was taken

into police custody thursday morning. police say sears, a teacher at glen burnie high school, had sexual relations with at least three female students between the aims of 15 and 16 years old. they believe the encounters happened between october of 2009 and october this year, both on and off campus, during regular school hours and after. now, he is facing various sex offenses and perverted practice. >> sears was removed from the school on november 1st, when this investigation first unfolded. now, the superintendent plans to recommend that he be suspended without bay. >> we'll have the latest on the story, coming up all new at 5:00 and 6:00. a man robs a bank, wearing a spiderman mask. these are still photos of the suspect, inside the bb&t branch in fort washington, prince george's county.

s man tried to get in the back of the bank. the man left with an undisclosed amount. anyone with information is asked to call prince george's county police. central maryland sees heavy rain last night. but some parts did get snow. you're looking right now at several inches of snow in cumberland, allegheny county. the snow started there and ended early this morning. outside now, sunny but chilly. the rain and snow are gone from the area. bob is here in the weather center with more and how much rain we got. >> literally, we are this close to having maybe an inch or two. it moves so quickly out of here. it took a while longer. let's take a look at current temperatures. after last nice, it was only 48 at the airport. right now, we recovered to 43. it's a little below normal. normal high now is only 47. 37 in cumberland. and down to the south, temperatures holding there in the mid-40s. now, take it back to last night. this is around 9:00, 10:00,

when all of this rain is moving through. now, right there at that point, the rain moved out. the cold air moved in just about an hour later. that's when it gets cold enough. so we just missed -- we had some flakes here. that's about it. but it started around 9:30 or 10:00. now, as far as the rain and snow totals, we had some very impressive. in fact, even flooding rains in? areas. generally 2 to 3 inches annapolis. waldorf came in over 5. to the west, 2, 3, as much as 7 inches of snow, over portions of garrett county. it's one of those very, very difficult forecasts. just not quite enough cold air. and it wasn't raining heavily enough to change that rain to snow to drag down some of the cold air. maybe have to wait another week or two before another chance of wintry precip. let's check in on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. hi, kristy.

>> hi, kai. hi, everyone. northbound 95 seems to be the problem at this hour. we have delays there from 32 to 175. you're already looking at 20 minutes to get through. as far as the beltway goes, on the west side inner loop, slowing there from 70 to security boulevard. north side of the inner loop, also back down there, from york road to providence. and if you're traveling, we have an accident at the northbound direction right there at the beltway, tying things up. traveling in towson. two areas in that portion right there. york road at timonium road. let's take a live look. and we'll take another live look. not too bad. things seem to be moving pretty slow on the beltway there, at 40 west. this traffic report is brought to you by kfc. it's the official chicken of the baltimore ravens. come in and enjoy a 10-piece feast.

we have an update for you. a nightmare in blacksburg, virginia. a shooting on the virginia tech campus. two people have been shot and killed, include a police officer. the gunman is still on the loose. the campus remains locked down. the officer was reportedly shot during what is being described as a routine traffic stop. a second victim was killed nearby in the parking lot. wjz will continue to update this story throughout the newscast. a firefighter dies battling an apartment house fire. the massachusetts firefighter went into the building to help someone who was trapped, then got stuck in the fire when a portion of the house collapsed. at least one other firefighter has reportedly been hurt. no word on how that fire started. a student jumps to the rescue when a school bus driver falls asleep at the wheel. here's the report from washington state. >> definitely a crash. nobody else noticed anything. and he was asleep.

and he can't notice anything. >> 17-year-old emmanuel williams was riding to high school. while his school bus was on the freeway. emmanuel notices a bus driver is nodding off at the wheel. >> i'm staring at him. it doesn't seem like we're going to make the turn. then he turns into where i'm about to make it. and that's when he's just asleep. >> as the bus swerves toward an i-5 off-ramp, emmanuel jumps to the front. >> he fell asleep right before the -- the off entrance, the entrance to the off-ramp. >> reporter: with an engine rousing him, they continued to get off. they told parents, who quickly called the district. >> he saved a lot of our students. and i'm very proud of him. >> reporter: today, his schoolmates are calling him a hero. >> he's really cool with that. >> but emadge shrugs off the

[ stock bells ringing ] all of the markets are down big today. dow was down 199 points. s&p down 27. nasdaq off 53. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. the number of americans applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in 9 months. experts say it's another sign the labor market is slowly healing. former senator and new jersey governor jon corzine told lawmakers today that he does not know the location of over a billion dollars of investors' money that went missing. corzine said he inherited a

well, bob. as storms go, that was a fast one. >> it -- we dumped a lot of rain. but last night, around 9:00, it was raining cats and dogs. by 12:00, the moon was out. >> okay. >> and in between, some cold air came in and had a little snow. if the cold air would have come in, we would have got a quick dumping of two inches of snow. but it moved out like that. it came out so quick that the cold air was in a little too late. they had enough cold air and that precip to create that snow. around here, we missed it but did get very heavy rain. 2 to 3 inches of rain. caused flooding. even bwi set a daily record. take a look at temperatures. it's dropped to more normal conditions. 43 degrees now. west/southwest. winds 14. barometer way back up, 30.28.

still cold. snow around oakland. 37, cumberland. mid-40s to the south. the dew points down to 26. so tonight, we'll probably get down to about 25 to 30 degrees tonight. and it will get chilly overnight. but that's close to what it should be in december, believe it or not. 45 in bel air. rock hall, kent island. and it will get a little lighter tonight. so it will get chilly overnight. tomorrow, will be shifting more to the southwest, ahead of a frontal system. and that system has clouds with it this afternoon. we won't see too much in the way of clouds. right now, the east coast, very clear. the snow and the rain. off to the east/northeast. a lot of sunshine in control. but this next front going near chicago. the few snow showers will pass our region tomorrow evening. ahead of it milder air. and behind it, it will get chilly for the weekend. maybe a few clouds in the area tomorrow night.

hello, everyone. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about. >> we're continuing to follow the breaking story at virginia tech. where at least two people have been shot and killed on campus, including a police officer. andrea fujii is live in the newsroom. >> in just a few minutes, virginia tech will hold a briefing on campus. here's what we know. earlier today, a gunman killed a police officer, during a traffic stop on campus. the shooter then ran toward a nearby office, where a second person was found dead. the campus was locked down. and multiple agencies have swarmed the area, looking for the shooter. moments ago, i spoke on the phone with a virginia tech student from parkton, maryland, who is from a lost bell. this shooting, of course, comes 4 1/2 years after 34 people were killed at virginia tech in the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. and of course, wjz now has

his supporters launched a head- on attack against gingrich, pointing out what he calls a problem with their record. and the romney campaign has a new tv ad, filled with home movies. it doesn't mention gingrich, who has been married three times, but it has been -- seemed to take a swipe at him. >> i've been to the same woman for 25 -- excuse me, i get in trouble. for 42 years. the president's adviser says gingrich has a shot at winning the nomination. >> i think either newt gingrich or mitt romney will have a shot, but they're both very flawed. and i think the president can take either one of them. >> eight years of obama will truly make the country dramatically more difficult and have dramatically greater problems. >> reporter: but some political strategists point out, gingrich's campaign has been slow to get workers on the

ground in some key states, where romney has staff in place. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> the cnn poll that has gingrich leading in some states, also shows gop leaders nationwide still prefer mitt romney. new reports that the handling of the soldiers remain was much wider than previously revealed. >> last month, they revealed they used this area to dispose of the nation's war-dead. 274 troops were sent to the landfill in king george county. that's what we understand right now. that number was based on information from dover air force base, where fallen soldiers return to american soil. the families of those troops were never informed of the practice. air force officials were told through the post that they have no plan to return to those families now. >> military officials say they stopped disposing of remains at

the landfill in 2008. the possible hazing death of a florida a&m university band member will not cost the school president his job. robert champion died on board the band's bus. investigators are now looking into whether school leaders did enough, when the hazing was brought to their attention. they voted today to reprimand university president james amons. prosecutors will seek the death penalty for the man accused of killing a maryland law school grad utin georgia am -- graduate in georgia. steven mcdaniel, the man you just saw, is now charged with the laurel native's murder. mcdaniel and giddings attended mercy law school together and lived in the same apartment bell. a new fda fanl panel considers whether new morning after pills should a different label. it may put women at risk for

serious blood clots. >> reporter: richard and diane amons' daughter annie ate right and exercised regularly. but two years ago, she had a heart attack at 35 and died. >> the medical examiner told me it was probably caused by a blood clot. >> the ammons family blames her birth control. annie was taking a bunch of pills. studies show pills like yaz and yazmin may put women at higher risk for dangerous blood clots. >> the pill can change how thick the blood is and can increase the chance of clotting. that's all pills. but specifically, these increase that lot a little -- clot a little bit more. >> but bayer, the maker of two of the most more pills, found no increased blood clot risk. >> reporter: doctors say women on the pill for more than six months without problems can likely keep taking them.

but many obgyns aren't prescribing them for first-time use. >> can't see a reason for having birth control on the market that are likely to kill women. >> they are telling annie's story to warn others. >> we would not be honoring our lovely daughter if we did not get out there and try to say something about this to try to get this removed from the market. >> they want to make sure what happened to their daughter doesn't happen to anyone else. in los angeles, bigad shaban, wjz eyewitness news. bay area is facing thousands of lawsuits in connection with these pills. a food recall to tell you about today, affecting two grocery store chains, with maryland locations. uncle ben's whole grain, white rice, garden vegetable packages are being pulled off the shelves. the product label did not show milk as a possible allergen. the rice was sold at giant food and martin food markets. officials say the product is safe to eat if you don't suffer from a milk allergy.

people in western maryland got accumulating snow. this is the scene in cumberland. the roads are clear. but there is plenty of stuff behind. a live look outside right now. here, the skies cleared up beautifully this afternoon. but it is still quite chilly out there. wjz has weather and traffic together. >> and it cleared out so quickly last night. by midnight, the moon was out. really moved out fast. let's take a look at temperatures now. it is cooled down. pretty close to normal. normal high now is 47. right now, we're down to 43. but it's cold out west. there was some melting this afternoon. 45, d.c. and easton. now, let's take you back to last night, where we had heavier rain in central maryland. by about 10:30, started snowing. but at the same time, the precip moved out. so it was a plert of chasing it out of the region. -- matter of chasing it out of the region. we have gotten dumped on. but just wasn't in the cards

for central maryland. western maryland issue they got snow. take a look at numbers that came in over the last 24 hours. 2 to 3. but up to 7, out in garrett county. look at all of this rainfall. 1 1/2 out in frederick. over 2 to 2 1/2 most places. three in annapolis. and more than that, over 5 down to waldorf. and considering flooding in the western shore and portions of the upper eastern shore. salisbury really missed, really only half inch of rain. looks like a dry start to the weekend. >> let's check in on the roads now with christ breslin at wjz traffic control. well, we're still seeing a lot of delays out there on the beltway system. traveling on the top side inner loop, heavy there from york road to providence road. the outer loop also slowing down from york road to charles street. average speed now about 30 miles an hour. west side inner loop, stop and go there, from 70 to security boulevard.

sympathy and condolences. police officers on this campus and in every police force in the nation, routinely put themselves at risk for their safety. and we are deeply grateful for their service. i'm going to ask deputy chief of police dr. gene beinger to tell you what we know. and dr. bob carpentiery, will describe further what is happening at this time. thank you very much. >> thank you, dr. seeinger. earlier today, the virginia tech community lost one of its guardians. a virginia tech police officer conducted a traffic stop on an individual in the parking lot, near macomis hall.

they interacted with the officer, checking on his welfare, which he confirmed was positive. shortly after that, dispatch was unable to make contact with the officer, shortly before 12:30 p.m., virginia tech police received its first call, advising that they had witnessed a subject approached the officer and fire a weapon at the officer and then leave the scene. virginia tech police responded to the scene, where they found the officer who had suffered a gunshot. we requested immediate assistance of local law enforcement agencies, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, whisked immediately to the campus, to assist in locating and taking -- locating the gunman and taking them into custody. at approximately 1:00 p.m., an

officer observed a suspicious subject in the "i" lot off of duck pond road, and upon returning to that area to make contact with the subject, found them deceased of a gunshot wound. all of the responding agencies have continued to search throughout the campus area for any ongoing threat. since the time of the second incident, there have been no other founded reports of any threat to the campus. we had responded to and investigated numerous calls of suspicious activity, community members reporting persons that matched the description that was provided to the community of the reported gunman, and none of those resulted in credible findings. so repeat. following the second incident,

there were no further founded sightings or concerns reported to the virginia tech police. earlier this afternoon, i requested the virginia tech, the assistance of the virginia state police. and that they assume the primary role in the investigation of the death. and with that, i'll turn it over to sergeant paul carpentiery. >> this afternoon, approximately 12:16 p.m., the virginia state police responded to the virginia tech campus, in reference to a shooting involving a virginia tech police officer, while he was conducting a traffic stop. as a result, the four-year veteran of the virginia tech police officer was shot and killed. we're not identifying the member at this time, but he was assigned to the patrol division. the individual involved in this shooting incident fled the

crime scene in the direction of a second crime scene that was located near the "i" lot, which is near the duck pond, and it turns out, another body of a white male was located in that vicinity, also shot. a weapon has been recovered. i'm not going to discuss what type of caliber that weapon is at this time. this is currently under investigation still. the criminal investigation has a crime scene investigator. that two of these crime scenes at this time, presently processing the scenes. and i know you'll have some questions. but we're going to be limited as to what we can say right at this time because we do not want to jeopardize this case. but just to make it clear, we want -- we want everyone to know that, like gene said, no

additional victims or shooting reports have been given to the police department. so we feel confident that the situation is under control at this time. i know i've gotten some media calls from you, regarding the northbound rester area. we had some reports of some suspicious activity. at that location. we sent some troopers and averages up to that location. and they're currently processing that scene. i cannot tell you at this time, if it's related to this incident or not. so i just want to clear the air about that, that we do have people at -- >> all right. you've been listening to a news conference on the campus of virginia tech, following a shooting there. very quickly, to summarize, an officer, a police officer, who works on the campus was shot and killed. a second body was found. another shooting victim.

we'll probably get down to about 18, 19 degrees. 39 in hagerstown. eastern shore, where they did see finally some rain. although salisbury, picked up about half an inch. most areas. north of easton, picked up 1 to 3 1/2 inches. here, showed you two to three inches of rain. and there was just so much rain and so much residual, milder air, that when that cold air came in, it mixed with it. it didn't get cold enough, long enough for that precip to turn into snow. honestly, one hour prior to the ending of that precip, had some cold air coming in. and we would have seen a quick, burst of heavy snow, which just didn't happen. annapolis at 45. down to 40 in westminster. a bit of a breeze, but it will be a lot lighter tonight. tomorrow, looks like the winds coming back out of the south, temporarily. there is a front out to the west. a little right snow.
