person in a second parking lot. >> we have many law enforcement agencies here. they have a description of the suspect. they are searching all buildings, outdoors, indoors, we're looking absolutely everywhere. >> reporter: the manhunt is reminiscent of a shooting on campus 4 1/2 years ago. 33 people died in 2007, in what was the deadliest mass shooting in modern history. that tragedy prompted an overhaul of the university's emergency noteification system. today, students and faculty were told to stay put. >> we continue to provide updates as often as we have, and even if we don't have new information, after about 30 minutes, we'll continue to keep people apprised of what we know. on the campus twitter account, students posted riew realtime accounts from where they were waiting. students are preparing for the start of final exams.

alexis christoforous, wjz eyewitness news. >> again, a law enforcement source says the gunman is dead. but police are not confirming this information as of yet. moments ago, police say that the shooter was not the person pulled over during the traffic stop. a baltimore county teenager is one of the students who spent several hours in lockdown at virginia tech. complete coverage continues with andrea fujii who just spoke to the parkton native about what is happening on campus. >> reporter: the heir ford high school graduate says she and several other students spent the afternoon with their doors locked in a study center. that is right off campus. just moments ago, they sent all students phone alerts, telling them they don't suspect any more violence on campus. there, this is eerily similar to the mass shooting. she said through it all, she was confident in law enforcement. this is right before the lockdown was lifted.

>> i mean, we were scared. but i think it's just the feeling that they know what they're doing. the police are trained to do this. and yesterday, they said they would do their job. >> yesterday, a lockdown lasted several hours. police continue to monitor the campus for any ongoing threats. >> wjz now has the latest on the virginia tech shooting. two people were killed this afternoon, including a police officer. the officer was killed during what is being called a routine traffic stop. the campus lockdown has been lifted. it is believed the gunman whoil caned the officer is now dead. stay with wjz for complete coverage of the virginia tech shooting. we'll continue to update you throughout the newscast. a glen burnie high schoolteacher is accused of having sex with three students. and police say some of the alleged attacks happened on campus. weijia jiang is at the school, with reaction from parents, students and police. good evening, weijia.

>> good evening, kai, and to everybody. the principal here said the teacher was a trusted member of the faculty. but now, after these stunning allegations surfaced, he stands to lose his job, reputation, even his freedom. >> reporter: 29-year-old jeffrey sears, jr., is described as well-known and popular by students at the high school. an image that came crashes down thursday, when he was arrested for having sexual relationships with at least three female students, between the ages of 15 and 17 years old. >> he was nice. >> a mother, grandmother, and someone who has spent my entire adult life in education, these charges make me absolutely sick to my stomach. >> reporter: anne arundel educators say it happened between november 2009 to october of this year. both on and off camp us. sometimes, even during regular school hours. >> that shows you how much he was able to hide it.

because you didn't even suspect it. it was happening right next to you. and you could see it. when you look back and think about it, you could see how it was. you can like start to connect those dots. >> reporter: now, sears faces a hefty list of charges, including multiple counts of sex abuse of a minor. various sex offenses and perverted practice. sears, an english teacher, was also an assistant coach for the boys junior varsity basketball team. students received this letter, hashing out some of the gritty details, but parents demand more answers. >> you are trusting the teachers to, you know, watch over your children. while you're at work and you're expecting them to do the right thing. >> reporter: and sears had a bail review earlier today. the judge set it at $3 million. she said one million for each of the alleged victims. and police say there may be other alleged victims and urge anyone who knows something to come forward. reporting live at glen burnie

high school, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> weijia, thank you. the superintendent says she will recommend sears be suspended without bay, -- pay, as the investigation continues. former assistant coach jerry sandusky has details. >> sandusky's wife posted $250,000 bond today, using real estate holdings and a certified check. he left in a gray sedan, one day after he was arrested on additional child sex abuse charges. one of the new accusers said he was assaulted in the basement of sandusky's home. the alleged victim testified that on at least one occasion, he screamed, knowing sandusky's wife was upstairs, but no one was there to help him. denise, back to you. >> all right. thank you, vic. under the terms of his release, sandusky will be subject to electronic monitoring. the man accused of killing a law school graduate will face the death penalty. today, prosecutors filed notice of their intention to seek capital punishment for steven

mcdaniel. he's charged with lauren giddings, where she takenned college. -- attended college. take a look at this suspect, wearing a spiderman mask and a sweater, held up a bb&t branch in fort washington yesterday afternoon. he threatened the teller with a gun and got away with cash. police are still looking for him tonight. a messy drive to work in parts of maryland. take a look at yesterday's aftermath. you can see dozens of cars, plowing through high water in upper marlboro. that's the county seat. now, state police say several other roads throughout the region were shut down by flooding. other parts of the state are still feeling the effects of a wintry mix. bob turk is tracking our rain and snowfall totals. but first, gigi barnett shows us the impact in western maryland. >> while that snow was beautiful, it made the morning commute, the drive time, a

dangerous mess. >> reporter: the rising sun over western maryland reveals what mother nature left behind late last night. the trees, sidewalks and benches are all covered in snow. >> it's very pretty out here. >> reporter: some of the first to see it were truckers working overnight and driving in the storm. they pulled in at this rest stop off of i-70. truckers say the farther west they go, the more snow they see. >> roads a little bit wet. worse in the east. i guess it's frozen up on top of the mountains. and it's nasty. >> reporter: while the western part of the state may look like a winter wonderland. truckers say the icy roads make driving treacherous. >> you slide all over the road. and people don't understand that, you know, trucks slide just like cars do. so we just do the best we can do. >> reporter: and while baltimore didn't see much snow, the storm opened the first -- or caused the first code blue of the season, which opened

heating centers in baltimore. back to you. >> all right. thank you, gigi. and first warning weather continues with bob turk. here's a look at the storm and our continue conditions. bob? >> american miniature. yesterday, temperatures in the low 70s, earlier in the day, in salisbury. in between, we got a lot of rain. temperatures have dropped 23 in oakland. still in the 40s to the south and east of our region. now, take a look at last night's rain. around 9:00, heavy rain moving through the region. but the cold air is still holding back. started snowing in frederick around 9:00. leesburg, virginia, around 8:30. we saw snow here around 10:25 last night. but by 11:30, it was gone. completely gone. just not enough cold air came in quick enough. an hour earlier, you would have gotten a quick burst of rain.

monies get paid. >> councilman bill cole, and mayor stephanie rawlings-blake addressed the possibility that a takeover by an investment firm would clear the debt. they still consider it successful as an event. >> i want to make certain that the city taxes are paid. amusement taxes are paid. and if there is a 2012 plan, there has to be a plan moving forward. >> according to wjz media partner, the baltimore sun would invest $3.3 million for development. and cut racing expenses by half to turn a profit next year. but mayor rawlings-blake says she's standing firm on the december 31st deadline, regardless of what -- who is running the company. >> reporter: and the state has a lean against the officials of baltimore racing development for unpaid taxes. reporting live from downtown on federal hill, i'm pat warren.

a food and drug administration panel is considering whether new warning labels should be added to newer generation birth control pills. some studies show they can put women at higher risk for serious blood clots. bigat shaban reports in tonight's healthwatch. >> reporter: richard and diane amons daughter annie ate right and exercised regularly. but two years ago, she had a heart attack at age 35 and died. >> the medical examiner told me it was probably caused by a blood clot. >> the amons family blames her birth control. annie was taking a new form of birth control. studies show that yaz and yaznin kimawt -- may put women

at higher risk. >> reporter: this drosperinon, or yaz, or yaz-like pills, increase that clot a little more. >> but bayer, the maker of two of the most popular pills, found no increase increased blood clot risk. >> reporter: doctors say women on the pill for more than six months without problems are okay to take them. >> reporter: consumer and women's groups say there are safer options out there. >> i can't see a reason for having birth control pills on the market that are more likely to kill women. >> reporter: the amons are telling annie's story to warn others. >> we would not be honoring our lovely daughter if we did not get out there and try to say something about this to try to get this removed from the market. >> they want to make sure what happened to their daughter doesn't happen to anyone else. in los angeles, bigad shiban, wjz eyewitness news. >> bayer is facing thousands of lawsuits, regarding these pills, including one from the amons agency family.

another speed camera will soon be watching drivers on interstate 695. the state highway administration is adding a camera to the outer loop in baltimore county. anyone caught driving more than 12 miles an hour over the speed limit will receive a warning starting next tuesday. tickets will be issued, starting january 3rd. speaking of speeding, if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, hopefully they're not speeding. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. well, kai, not everyone drives as good as you and i. but if you're traveling on the top side inner loop, slows down there from park heights avenue to perring parkway. west side inner loop, at least from baltimore national pike to security boulevard. and we have an accident on the south side inner loop. that one definitely attracting a lot of attention. 70 westbound, heavy there from 29 to marriottsville road. at least 15 minutes to get through. and the harrisburg expressway, plenty of delays in the

and our platform is to serve the community. >> reporter: the wives teamed up with the salvation army to buy christmas gifts for 20 needy families in baltimore. >> we try to look for those who demonstrate the most need. and families, perhaps, that stick out a little more than others because we can tell that they're just really struggling this year. >> reporter: each wife gets to fill their basket with whatever they want, up to $800 per family. >> they have such simple lists that they're asking for. and it's awesome that we can get them what they need, plus more. >> reporter: they did their best to get the families what they wanted and needed. whether it was toys for the kids or help for their parents. >> we wanted to make them happy. >> reporter: once the gifts were bought, the wives and volunteers got them ready for christmas. >> and to know that the ravens care about them, care about the community, that just makes it sort of a little icing on the cake and helps them know that there are people in the community that care. >> reporter: for all of these

got to 38. we started having a little snow here around 10:30 last night, on tv hill. but by 11:15, it was done. and clouds cleared out quickly. 39 in ocean city. 36 in cumberland. and 43 in washington. dew points, 45. we'll get down to about 25 degrees. locally, just around the 43- degree mark. that's pretty normal. normal high is around 47. normal low now in the upper 20s. that's where we should be. right now, a bit of a west wind. still rather light at 6 miles an hour. northwest winds in ocean city. and southwest wind out to the west. going to warm up just a little bit tomorrow, ahead of a frontal system that will bring us another shot of pretty chilly air for saturday and sunday. but it will be dry. along that frontal boundary, a few clouds for chicago. few snow showers. light snow in nebraska. that front is going to move

across our region tomorrow night. may bring a few clouds. but right now, here in the east, clearing out beautifully. it's pretty much gone now, as the winds start turning more. when the winds are coming directly off the lakes and it's a cold wind, here's where you get the lake-effect stuff, as long as the lake is still warm. we have clear stuff around the region. tonight, high pressure in control. means rather high winds. go more to the southwest. then this next front coming through. behind it, some chilly air for the weekend. saturday and sunday will be sunny but pretty cool. temperatures in the low to mid- 20s at night. and only around the low 40s in the daytime. south winds on the bay. tomorrow night, they shift back to the northwest at 5 to 10 knots. lifting of a small craft advisory. bay temp, stuck around 50 degrees. sunrise, 7:14. sets again at 4:44. tonight, mainly clear skies, chilly, down to 28. probably low 30s in the city.

it's 5:29. 40 degrees and clear. good evening. thank you for staying with wjz, eyewitness news. we're continuing to follow the breaking situation at virginia tech. where at least two people have been shot and killed, including a police officer. andrea fujii is in the newsroom right now with the very late evaluate. -- latest. >> reporter: a short time ago, the campus lockdown was lifted and students were told they could go about their business. just after noon today, police say a gunman walked into a parking lot on campus and killed the virginia tech police officer, who was in the middle of the traffic stop. police say it appears the shooter was not in the car that had been pulled over. >> all of the responding agencies have continued to search throughout the campus area for any ongoing threat.

since the time of the second incident, there have been no other founded reports of any threat. >> reporter: now, police are not saying whether the second victim was the gunman who killed the officer, but a source is telling the associated press, that gunman is dead. kai? >> andrea, thank you. in 2007, virginia tech was the scene of the nation's deadliest mass shooting. 33 people were shot and killed by seung-hui cho. stay with wjz for continuing coverage. we'll continue to update you throughout this evening's newscast. the bald eagle may be a national symbol. but when a bird gets in trouble, it takes local help to rescue. >> if a bald eagle can't fly, it can't feed or protect itself. that's the dire spot, an injured eagle found itself in in anne arundel county.

>> it was out there so long with not a lot of nourishment that it was getting weaker. and it just didn't seem to fight me very much. >> reporter: darren is here with the research center in delaware. he responded whenout doorsman spotted the injured eagle. after it was netted, he covered its head with a towel. >> i slid it down the side. once i had the feet, i know i'm not going to get hit by the talons. >> reporter: people will go to extraordinary lengths to save them. >> a few years back, police say the pair of young eagles, trapped in mud. >> i'm up on the skid. and i'm reaching back and grabbing the bird, something like that. >> reporter: both of those eagles were eventually brought back to health and released into the wild. but not all fair so well. this eagle suffered an injury,

similar to the one in davidsonville. >> there's a trauma to his left elbow. a fracture to the joint that we can't surgically repair. >> not the happy end being hoped for. >> no. but happy ending is we got the bird out of that situation. i mean, if you're out in the wild and you're injured, and you don't know what is going to be trying to get you. so we did the right thing. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, it's not clear how the bald eagle was injured. it is speculated, it could have flown into an overhead line or even been hit by a car, while scavenging on a roadway. >> one of the men who said he was molested by a former syracuse university assistant basketball coach, files a lawsuit. vic is in the newsroom with the latest. >> reporter: 23-year-old zachary thomaselli said he was assaulted. fine denies the claim. prosecutors question

thomaselli's credibility. thomaselli's attorney says his client is suing fine to prove the claim is true. kai, back to you. vic, thank you. two former ball boys say they were molested by fine. but no state charges can be filed in those cases since the statute of limitations has expired. a sightseeing helicopter tour of las vegas turns tragic. the pilot and four tourists were killed when the aircraft crashed into a ravine in lake mead. the air is not accessible by any road. investigators say that will make the recovery of the body and the investigation more complicated. the weather was clear and winds were calm at the time of the accident. iran says it has proof of a captured u.s. drone. state tv in iran showed video of what it says is an undamaged sentinel drone. the defense department has acknowledged losing a drone. the iranian military says it used an electronic ambush to

bring the drone down, 140 miles from the afghanistan border. the military's mishandling of the remains of the war dead is more widespread than they first acknowledged. that's according to a report by the washington post. they say the incinerated partial remains of at least 247 american troops were sent to a virginia landfill. their report is based on information from the dover air base mortuary, where most of the war dead return. the families of the deceased gave the military permission to dispose of the remains. they were not notified of the landfill dumping. the controversial practice was abandoned three years ago. the race for the republican presidential nomination is getting more personal. current front runner newt gingrich is coming under attack. >> the republicans running for the white house. >> reporter: they now have their sights set on newt gingrich.

it shows the former house speaker holding a double-digit lead in three voting states. in a morning conference call, his supporters launched anec against-- an attack against gingrich. and the romney campaign has a new ad. it doesn't mention gingrich, who has been married three times, but appears to take a swipe at him. >> i've been married to the same woman for 20 -- excuse me, i get in trouble. for 42 years. >> reporter: the obama campaign is also watching gingrich's gains in the polls. sources say the president's advisers say gingrich has a shot at winning the presidential nommation. >> -- nomination. >> i think either nute beginning -- newt gingrich or mitt romney will be formidable opponents. but they're both flawed. >> eight years of obama will truly make the country

dramatically more difficult and have dramatically greater problems. >> reporter: but some political strategists point out, gingrich's campaign has been slow to get workers on the ground in some key states, where romney has a staff in place. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> the latest cnn poll shows gingrich leading in some early voting states. but gop leaders nationwide still prefer mitt romney. a day of unrest at occupy san francisco, demonstrators clash with police and riot gear during an early-morning raid. protestors tried to reenter their former encampment. nearly 90 protestors were taken into custody. the city says the park is not safe or sustainable for overnight use. the number of u.s. weather catastrophes. they have each caused over $1 billion in damage. the previous record was nine set in 2008.

the extreme weather has also killed more than 1,000 people, according to the national weather service. >> if you shop at giant food stores, be aware, there is a recall for a popular uncle ben's project product. product. -- product. it may contain milk. they have a best before date of august 12th. customers should throw out or return the product. the maryland half marathon is one of the fastest growing races in the state. it raises hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for cancer research. as part of our continuing community commitment. gigi barnett takes a look at how more plan to get across the finish line next year. >> reporter: in three and a half years, the maryland half marathon has boomed past the state. it is part of the maryland green balm cancer center. today, they unveil a plan to do it again.

bigger and better. >> this is the maryland half marathon. >> reporter: back again next year is dozer, the 3-year-old golden doodle who decided to get into the race when he saw hundreds of runners go past his house. >> he jumped into our race, unannounced, at mile 5. and completed it by himself. >> reporter: dozer has a facebook page that raised more than $25,000 last year. next year, it's on track to do it again. >> i was on there, checking around. he's already raised, almost $700. and the race was 5 months away. >> reporter: over the last few years, the race has raised $750,000 for the cancer center. but next year's race will hit a major milestone at the million- dollar mark. >> the funds we raise from the half marathon, permit us to do research. if we relied on federal funding. >> reporter: next year, the race also returns to howard county. and a very hilly court. organizers say it's a simple

we're following breaking news, a person struck by a car in east baltimore county. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene. let's go to captain mike for the details. >> reporter: looks like a pretty nasty crash. this is highlands boulevard, annapolis road and ohio avenue. in front of a bar, where apparently a female pedestrian was struck while crossing the ride. -- roadway. now, this is not too far from the anne arundel county line. police apparently involved in a very serious investigation. it's not clear at this time whether the vehicle that struck the victim is even on the scene.
