the second victim. >> do you believe that to be the shooter? >> i can't comment on that right now. it's still being investigated. >> reporter: freshman juliet fielding arrived on the scene right after the first shots were fired. >> as soon as i saw its face, i just started crying. because i, obviously -- if you get shot in the head or face, it's not going to be good. >> reporter: police say they have the weapon used in the shootings. >> following the second incident, there were no further founded sightings, or concerns, reported to the virginia tech police. >> reporter: the manhunt is reminiscent of a shooting on campus, four and a half years ago. 33 people died in 2007. in what is still the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. that tragedy prompted an overhaul of the university's emergency notification system. today, students and faculty were told to stay put, indoors, via a flurry of alerts, from their phones and social media. >> reporter: but there were fewer people out and about

today, as there were no classes in session. students are preparing for the start of final exams. alexis christoforous, wjz eyewitness news. >> and our complete coverage of the shooting at virginia tech, continues now with andrea fujii, who speak with a-- spoke with a local student. >> the graduate who is now a freshman, says she and several other students spent the afternoon, with their doors locked in a study center that is right off campus. about 45 minutes ago, police sent students alerts, telling them the lockdown is lifted. and they don't suspect there are any more threats of violence on campus. she said this is eerily reminiscent of the 2007 mass shooting in which 33 people died. >> i think this happening, was a surprise. like why would that happen again at our school? like that's a bit of a coincidence. but i definitely think there are all different types of people out there.

and you never know what will do something like that. >> reporter: students have finals this weekend and next week. we're told they will go on as scheduled. vic? >> andrea, thank you. wjz 13 has the latest on the shooting at virginia tech. the campus wide lockdown is now over. police say an officer was killed during a traffic stop. they believe the gunman is dead now as well. wjz is always on. check in for complete coverage of the shooting of virginia tech. for updates any time, log onto wjz.com. a violation of trust. an anne arundel county schoolteacher faces serious charges, accused of having sex with students. wjz is live at glen burnie high school, where police say some of the incidents happened. weijia jiang has more on these charges. weijia? >> reporter: police will not talk about the specifics or the extent of the sex acts, but indeed say some of them happened right inside the school. new, the teacher stands to lose his job, reputation, even his freedom.

>> reporter: 29-year-old jeffrey sears, jr., is described as well known and popular by his students and colleagues at glen burnie high school. an image that came crashing down thursday, when he was arrested for having sexual relationships with at least three female students, between the ages of 15 and 16 years old. >> he actually flirted with my best friend, telling her she had nice legs. and she has a boyfriend and everything. >> as a mother, grandmother, and someone who has spent my entire adult life in education, these charges make me absolutely sick to my stomach. >> reporter: ann ale -- anne arundel county say this happens october 2009. sometimes even during regular school hours. >> that shows you how much he was able to hide it. because you didn't even suspect. and it was happening right next to you. and you can see how it was. you can like start to connect those dots a little more. >> reporter: now, sears faces a hefty list of charges,

including multiple counts of sexual abuse of a minor, various sex offenses and perverted practice. he was removed from the school on november 1st, when the investigation unfolded. sears, an english teacher, was also assistant coach for the boys junior basketball team. students received this letter, hashing out some of the gritty details. but parents demand more answers. >> you are trusting the teachers to, you know, watch over your children, while you're at work. and you're expecting them to do the right thing. >> reporter: and sears is being held on $3 million bond. $1 million, the judge says, for each of the alleged three victims. police say there could be even more victims and urge anyone who knows something to come forward. reporting live at glen burnie high school, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> the superintendent says he the recommend sears be suspended without bay -- pay, as the investigation continues. what a difference from just 24 hours ago. we are live outside now.

bob is tracking the chilly temps and all of those things that are settled in. but we first go with gigi barnett with more on the snow that covered much of western maryland. gigi? >> the snow and ice made western maryland roads a slick and slippery mess. a very dangerous commute for drivers. >> reporter: the rising sun over western maryland reveals what mbsd naum left-hand behiewlg -- what mother nature left behind. some were truckers working overnight and driving in the storm. they pulled in at this rest stop, off of i-70. truckers say the farther west they go, the more snow they see. >> roads a little worse here. a little worse in the east, i guess. it's frozen up on top of the mountains. and it's nasty. >> reporter: while the western part of this state may look like a winter wonderland, truckers say the icy road made driving treacherous. >> do you slide all over the

road. and people don't understand that, you know, trucks slide just like cars do. so we just do the best we can do. >> reporter: while baltimore didn't see much snow, the storm caused the first code blue of the season, which opened many heating shelters. denise, back to you. >> all right. thank you, gigi. first warning weather coverage continues with bob turk, who has more on the graphic change in our weather in just the last few hours. >> since yesterday morning, we went from 62 to 34 last night, around 11:00. heavy rain gave way to some snow. but it was just too late. the cold air came in too late. now, it's down to 38 degrees. slightly below average for the date now. 37 in ocean city. chilly 23 in oakland. and just above the freezing mark, there in cumberland. now, take a look at last night's rain. we had heavy rain up until about 10:00, 10:30. then some snow developed. then the precip quickly -- i mean, it was moving around, 65

pat? >> reporter: that's right. $12 million owed. $100,000 on hand. those were the figures reported in a proposal to take over baltimore racing development. >> reporter: it all goes by in a blur. >> love it. love it. been waiting two years for this. >> reporter: but leaves a mess behind that still needs to be cleaned up. it's baltimore racing development, hobbled by a reported $12 million in debt and humbled by a city threat to kick the grand prix to the curb. if it doesn't pay $1 million, it owes the city by december 31st. >> that's my concern, figuring out how the tax money is paid. >> reporter: councilman bill cole and mayor stephanie rawlings-blake addressed the possibility that a takeover by an investment firm would clear the debt. cole and the mayor were outspoken about the race. >> i want to make certain that the city taxes are paid, the amusement taxes are paid, and

if there isn't a 2012 race, we don't want to have to do this every year. >> reporter: according to the wjz media partner, they will sling capital in baltimore racing development for 58% of the company. and cut racing expenses by half to turn a profit next year. but mayor rawlings-blake says she's standing firm on the december 31st deadline, regardless of what is run -- who is running the company. >> and the state is also issuing a lean against the officials -- lien against the officials of baltimore development for unpaid taxes. reporting live, i'm pat warren. back to you on tv hill. >> calls to wilks lane capital were not returned today. candidate newt gingrich is enjoying his front runner status, but knows the race for the republican race is far from over. danielle nottingham reports from the white house. >> reporter: the republicans running for the white house and

president obama's campaign, now have their sights set on newt gingrich. a new cnn poll shows the former house speaker holding a double- digit lead in three early voting. mitt romney is targeting those voters. in an early-morning call, his supporters launched an attack against gingrich, pointing out what they call problems with his record. and the romney campaign has a new tv ad, filled with home movies. it doesn't mention gingrich, who has been married three times. but it appears to take aim at him. >> i've been married to the same woman for 20 -- excuse me, i get in trouble, for 42 years. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news, the president's advisers say gingrich has a shot. >> i think either mitt romney or newt gingrich will be formidable opponents if are the -- for the president, but they're both deeply flawed.

>> eight years of obama will truly make the country dramatically more difficult, and have dramatically greater problems. >> reporter: but some political strategists point out, gingrich's campaign has been slow to get workers on the ground in some key states, while romney has a staff in place. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> while polls showed gingrich is leading in some early morning states. nationwide, voters prefer mitt romney take on president obama next november. bwi is getting this. renovating the oldest part of the terminal, which is concourse c. bwi will pay for the project, using revenue from gate leases, fees and rent. the airport had its busiest year ever last year. more than 22 million passengers passed through. let's hope they left some

the bald eagle may be a national symbol. but it takes local help to rescue alex demetrick reports, that's what happens. >> if a bald eagle can't fly, it can't feed or protect itself. >> i think because it was out there for so long, with not a lot of nourishment, that it was getting weaker. and jpped just didn't seem to do much. >> he responded when outdoorsman adam glasgow came through. after it was netted. he covered its head with a towel. >> and i slid down until i could get to its legs and feet. once i had its feet, i knew i

would not get hit by the talons. >> when eagles are in trouble, people will go try extraordinary lengths to try to save them. >> i'm upo the skid -- up on the skid, reaching back, grabbing the bird, something like that. >> reporter: both were eventually brought back and released into the wild. but not all fared so well. >> there is a trauma to his left elbow. there's a fracture right down to the joint that we can't surgically repair. >> reporter: the eagle we rescued this week. >> no, but happy ending is we got the bird out of this whole situation. i mean, you're out in the wild. you're injured. and you don't know what is going to be trying to get you. so we did the right thing. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, it's not clear how the bald eagle was injured. it is speculated it could have flown into an overhead line. or even been hit by a car.

>> reporter: another speed cam will be watching drivers on interstate 65. it will be adding a camera to frederick road. anyone caught driving more than 12 miles an hour over the speed limit receive a warning, starting next tuesday. their husbands may be stars on the field. monique griego has more coming up. >> anquan boldin is known for his work on the end zone. his wife is known for scoring in baltimore. >> their platform is just to be on the field and be great. and our platform is just to serve in the community. >> reporter: dion boldin and several other wives teamed up to buy christmas gifts for 20 needy families in baltimore. >> we try to look for those who demonstrate the most need. and families, perhaps, that

stick out a little more than others because we can tell that they're just really struggling this year. >> reporter: each wife gets to fill their basket with whatever they want, up to $800 per family. >> they have such simple lists that they're asking for. it's just awesome that we can get them what they need plus more. >> reporter: all the ravens did their best to get the families what they wanted or needed. whether it was toys for the kids or help for their parents. >> we just wanted them to be happy. >> that one looks nicer. >> reporter: once the gifts were bought, the wives and volunteers got them ready for christmas. >> to know that the ravens care about them, care about the community, that just makes it sort of a little icing on the cake and helps them know that there are people in the community that care. >> reporter: for these ladies, all of the leg work will be worth the family's reaction. >> how surprised they're going to be and how happy they'll be. >> reporter: monique griego, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the ravens are back on the field sunday afternoon to take on the indianapolis colts.

live look outside right now. a lot of people will be finishing up their holiday decorating outside this weekend, bob. >> looks like it will be perfect weather for that. really, considering how horrible yesterday was. miserable, water all over the place. this weekend should be cool but it will be try. take a look at temperatures around the region. we've dropped down to clear skies and lighter winds to 38. cold spot, 23 degrees now in oakland. that's pretty chilly. they'll get down in the upper teens. 34 in cumberland. and 37 in the south and east.

pax river at 40. patuxent, if you've ever had a wind gust of 51 miles an hour, last evening, as all of that rain was happening. 38 here. 39. 37, westminster. north of the city tonight, it will get down to the mid- to upper 20s. downtown may actually get to freezing. they have yet to have a 32- degree day downtown. 45, 34 today. that was at the airport. and that occurred while it started snowing and then quick le, the snow and the precip left. and the temperatures have kind of really not moved a whole lot. 47, 30 is the average today. and the record, 74. and 10 degrees back in 1882. right now, very light winds in the region. still a bit of a northerly component. but they'll start shifting tomorrow. more out of the south. and that's going to bring in slightly milder air for one day monday. because there is a front out to the west. that front has a few clouds with it. front will go through sometime in the evening. and that will be replaced by

another chilly, dry air mass for the weekend. tomorrow looks like a nice day really. southerly winds, a little light breeze. but mainly sunny skies. it will be a few clouds in the afternoon tomorrow night. then the front goes through. and it will turn colder, late tomorrow night and over the weekend. it will be sunny, bright but pretty chilly. although high pressure is in control, temperatures are running several degrees below normal this weekend. generally four or five degrees colder than it should be. should be pretty cold nights this weekend. tonight, then, looking for clear conditions. chilly, yes. 28. maybe low 30s in the city. tomorrow, back up a little warmer than we've seen this afternoon. upper 40s, but it will be mainly sunny day. a little bit of a breeze, picking up late in the afternoon, as the front goes through. back tomorrow night in the upper 20s again. then a dry weekend on tap. so not a bad-looking really forecast at all. >> wonderful. well, the maryland half marathon is one of the fastest- growing races in the state.

it races -- raises hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for cancer research. gigi barnett takes a look at how organizers plan to get even more runners across the finish line next year. >> in three and a half years, the maryland half marathon has zoomed across are the states. today, organizers unveiled a plan to do it again. bigger and better. >> this is the maryland half marathon. >> we want to be for the entire state of maryland. >> back again next year is dozen -- dozer, the 3-year-old doodle. >> he jumped into our race, unannounced, at mile five. and completed it by himself. >> reporter: dozer has a facebook page that raised more than $25,000 last year. next year, it's on track to do it again. >> i was checking around. he's already raised almost $700. and the race is 5 months away. >> reporter: over the last few

years, the race has raised more than $750,000 for the cancer center. but next year's race will hit a major milestone at the million- dollar mark. the funds we raised permit us to do research that we wouldn't do for years. >> next year, the race also returns to howard county and to a very hilly court. organizers say it's a simple reminder that fighting cancer isn't easy. >> when you are facing a tough climb, think of what the other people have to deal with in dealing with their cancer. >> and in honor of dozer, organizers created a race within the race, called dozer's dash. it starts at the 5-mile mark. the maryland half marathon is sunday, may 6th. >> of course you saw mark viviano there in the last shot there. he is quite the runner. >> he trains year round.

it is just before 6:30. 38 degrees and clear. good evening. thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. we want to update the breaking news we have been following all evening. another deadly shooting at virginia tech. the campus was locked down for several hours after a police officer was shot to death in a parking lot. another body was found a short distance later. and police suspect that was the gunman. a weapon was recovered near that body. virginia tech has told students there is no longer a threat on campus. much more on the unfolding investigation coming up on the cbs evening news. out of jail, former penn state assistant coach, jerry sandusky, posts $60,000 bail and is released. ines ferre reports from belafonte, pennsylvania with the latest on the sex scandal.

>> reporter: jerry sandusky was driven home after spending a night behind bars. he posted bail, using $200,000 in real estate holdings and a $50,000 certified check from his wife. sandusky was led from his home in handcuffs wednesday, after two more accusers told their story to a grand jury. 10 alleged victims now claim sandusky sexually abuse said them. victim number 9 says the 67- year-old raped them at the sandusky home in a bedroom. at least once, he told a grand jury, he screamed for help, knowing that sandusky's wife was upstairs. but no one came to help him. >> reporter: sandusky's lawyers said his client is required to wear an electronic monitoring device. he is not allowed to contact his accusers in the case. and he can't be with anybody under the age. 18. >> reporter: police said sandusky met most of his victims through his charity for underprivileged children. some of his accusers man to

testify at his initial court appearance tuesday. ines ferre, wjz eyewitness news. >> sandusky's wife released a statement through her husband's lawyer today. she says her husband is innocent and his accusers are making up their stories. new developments in another sex scandal, rocking another prominent east coast university. one of the men who claims former syracuse basketball coach bernie fine molested him is filing a lawsuit. 23-year-old zachary thomaselli said fine sexually abused him during a trip in 2002. however, travel records indicate this is not the case. thomaselli and his attorney insist the abuse happened and they are suing to keep the investigation open. police are looking for a man who robbed a bank, while dressed as spiderman. take a look at this surveillance video. police say the man approached a teller, passed a note and demanded money. it is not clear how much money

he got away with. and no one was hurt. crews cleaned up a fuel spill. the leak started when a tanker overturned. the truck driver swerved to miss a car, struck it and rolled over. the drivers of both vehicles were taken to shock trauma for treatment. in tonight's healthwatch report, a food and drug administration panel is considering whether new warning labels should be added to newer generation birth control pills. some studies have shown certain bills can put women at higher risk for serious blood clots. >> richard and diane amons' daughter annie ate right and exercised regularly. but two years ago, she had a heart attack and died at age 35. >> the medical examiner told me it was probably caused by a blood clot or inflammation. >> the amons family blames her

birth control. annie was taking a pill that contained drosperignone. >> reporter: the till can -- pill can change how thick the blood is and increase the chance of clotting. that's all pills. specifically this yaz, or yaz- like pills increase that clot a little more. >> reporter: but bayer, the naker of two of the -- maker of two of the most popular pills, found no increased blood clot risk. >> doctors say women on the pill for more than six months with no problems can likely keep taking them. but many obgyns ns ns ns --obgyns aren't prescribing them first time. >> we would not be honoring our lovely daughter if we did not get out there to try to say something about this to try to

is. federal investigators will have a tough time recovering bodies after a crashed helicopter. it went down in a remote location in a nevada canyon. the crash site is only accessible by helicopter and four-wheel drive vehicles. five men dress up as police officers and raid an illegal game room in texas. the fake police impostors -- or police impottors have stolen $320,000 from three gaming establishments. witnesses say the impostors use a police car equipped with some sort of siren and light. investigators say they could be members of the drug cart gang

in houston. heavy snow causes a 100-car pileup in china. one person was killed and many others injured. officials say many are still trapped in crushed cars and trucks. the accident happened on slippery conditions in the city evercity of chang ye. european leaders are gathering in belgium, ahead on the debt crisis. they're trying to save the euro currency from collapsing. heather cobar reports. >> reporter: the european commission president says a deal to save the euro is within reach. >> all the world is watching us. >> reporter: but european leaders must bring solutions to make friday's event a success. >> they don't come saying what they cannot do. but what they will do for europe. >> reporter: french president sarkozy and merkel rallied before heading to talks in brussels. the pair will call for new penalties on euro countries

eyewitness news. >> now, analysts are calling the summit a do or die for the euro. one official said it could take until christmas to secure a deal. rescuers save a dog's life when he gets stuck. a helicopter crew found the dog soaked and stranded in the middle of the frozen river. a boatful of animal control officers came to the rescue. eventually, they were able to lift the dog, bernie, onto a tugboat. a vet checked out bernie and says the lab ra doodle is healthy and is not injured. >> and was not aware he was being rescued for a while either. scott pelley has a preview of what's coming up tonight on the cbs evening news. images of what it says is a captured american spy plane. but are those images real? we'll have that story tonight on the cbs evening news. >> thanks, scott. here's a look at tonight's closing numbers from wall street. we'll be right back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,
