[ sirens ] panic returns to virginia tech the sift dead lift campus attack in u.s. history. the ambush that killed a police officer and students fear as they brace for the worst. hello, i am vic carter. >> i am denise koch here what he people are talking about. >> we begin with breaking news. police identified the officer killed by a gunman on campus in virginia tech. he was an army vet and father of five. wjz has coverage of the stotting. and danielle notting hams has the latest and andrea fugi. speaks with those in the lockdown first here danielle.

>> reporter: a gunman approached the virginia tech police officer during a routine traffic stop thursday and opened fire. killing officer derrick krause e then fled. -- he then fled. this student sought aftermath. >> the police pulled up and he opened the car door and he just fell out toward the ground. i didn't see his face he was covered in blood. >> reporter: the campus was on lockdown for hours after the shooting. >> do not leave the room until told you understand. >> reporter: this is the first time a virginia tech officer has been killed in the line of duty. >> our hearts are broken again for the family of our police officer. >> reporter: another wounded person was found nearby and later died. >> the second person that you found dead, do you believe that to be the shooter? >> can't comment on that right now. it's being investigated. >> reporter: for the virginia tech community, this shooting brought back memories of the 2007 massacre. that was the deadliest mass

shooting in modern u.s. history. >> you never thought it would happen again. >> reporter: 33 people were killed on campus when a gunman opened fire in april of 20 07. virginia tech criticized for -- was criticized for waiting to alert student. they ramped up the emergency notification system. >> the communication systems that we have at our disposal today didn't exist on april 16th, 2007. >> reporter: virginia tech officials were in washington thursday appealing a federal fine for their response to the 2007 shooting. in blacksburg, virginia, danielle nottingham, wjz "eyewitness news." the officer killed joined the virginia tech police department six months after the 2007 shooting rampage. some of those caught up in the moments of fear are from here in maryland. complement complete coverage continues live -- complete coverage continues live. andrea fujii spoke to them. >> reporter: i spoke to two

students through skype and though they say they feel safe tonight, they are still on edge. virginia tech students started receiving alerts the campus was on lockdown right afternoon. >> i immediately locked my doors and shut the blinds because at that point they didn't know where the person was. >> reporter: through skype, wjz talked to carley haldeman a senior at vtu. she says her first thought was the mass shooting a the iewn -- at the university in 2007. >> i was like this is not happening again. >> reporter: across campus lindsey tankersley locked herself in and she got the news the manhunt was over. >> the stuff that happened today was one of the freak things you don't know when it will happen or where it will happen but it's not something you should be worried about. >> reporter: with two campus shootings in less than five years, some students say now they are more cautious. >> now, probably, it will a

university but grew up in laurel. a anne arundel county teacher is off the job and behind bars tonight accused of having sex with students. weija jiang explains the alleged sexual encounters happened at school. >> reporter: 29-year-old jeffrey sears junior is described as being well-known and popular by students and col leagues at -- colleagues at glen burnie high school. he was arrested for having sexual relationships with at least three female students. between the ages of 15 and 16 years old. he he actual -- >> he said my best friend had nice leg. >> for a mother and grandmother and someone who spent my entire adult life in education the charges make me sick to my stomach. >> reporter: education leaders and police rereceive the -- revealed it happened between 2009 and october of this year on and off campus and sometimes during regular school hours. >> that shows you how much he

was able to hide it because you didn't suspect it it was happening next to you. and you can see it when you think about it, you can see how it was. you can start to connect the dots a little more. >> reporter: now, sears face as list of charges including sexual abuse of a minor. various sex offenses and perverted practice. he was removed from the school on november 1st when the investigation unfolded. he was an assistant coach for the boys junior varsity basketball team. police say it was a fellow coach that reported him. students he received this letter hashing out some of the gritty details but parents demand more answers. >> you are trusting the teachers to, you know, watch over your children while you are at work and you are expecting them to do the right thing. >> reporter: sears is held on $3 million bond. one million for each of the three alleged victims. reporting from glen burnie high school weija jiang, wjz "eyewitness news. >> the superintendent will recommend sears be suspend without pay as the

investigation continues. in the sex abuse scandal at penn state we hear a new side of the story for the first time former coach jerry sandusky's wife speaks out in defense of her husband and herself. do theie says the -- dotie says her husband is innocent and the accusers are make up the stories and rejects one alleged victim's testimony he screamed to her for help while he was attacked in the sandusky's basement. he is charged with more than 50 counts of sexually abusing boys. today e. posted a quarter million dollars bail and will be monitored heck electronically by authorities. police search for a armed robber on the loose in prince george's county but are looking for spiderman. these are photos of the criminal wearing the mask and sweater. he entered the bb and t bank in fort washington yesterday afternoon and passed a teller a note demanding money and flashed a handgun, got the money and left the bank. beltway drivers pay attention. another work zone speed camera isaed to your dealy commute. wj -- is being added to your

daily commute. you could get nailed without knowing it. kai. >> reporter: that's right. drivers will have a brief grace period shortly after that, the fines will start. they are set up in construction zones. and if you blink you might miss them. but zoom past one of the state's speed cameras and chances are it saw you and took a picture. >> i've had tickets and rightfully so they were mine i owned them. i earned them i should say. >> reporter: now, the state highway administration says it will start monitoring another area with the speed camera. it will be on the inner loop of i-695 at frederick road war new overpass is being constructed. -- where a new overpass is being constructed. critics say they use it to generate revenue. >> i think it's good gesture to put it out there to catch the speeders i mean, follow the law and you won't have problem with speed cameras. >> reporter: use of the cameras started in 2009 following the death of state highway workers. >> we want to make sure our workers and everyone arrives home safely. we want travelers to slow

it's 32 degrees and clear in central maryland. first warning weather forecast is coming. a terrifying scene in washington state a fireball appears in the sky during a stand off with police. they say a gunman barricade himself inside a burning house and then opened fire on the officers. firefighters were not able to get close and the house burned to the ground. police say two bodies have been recovered but a positive id could take weeks. the tour company involved in a tragic helicopter crash outside las vegas has a troubled past the pilot and four tourist died when they crashed in a canyon near lake meade. they have had five accidents and federal violation since 1994. ntsb says the site will make it difficult to recover bodies. police in texas say two

children shot by their mother in a welfare office have died. they say rochelle grimmer shot them during a 7-hour stand off with police earlier this week. she then took her life. the 12-year-old girl and 10- year-old boy died at a san antonio hospital. their mother went to the office about being denied food stamps. controversial video surfaces showing dominique strauss-kahn minutes after an alleged sexual assault in a new york hotel. the video aired on french tv and shows the former head of the international monetary fund casually leaving the hotel in new york. another clip those shows his accuser a maid appearing to act out the attack to coworkers. and there is a third clip showing two workers celebrating. strauss-kahn's lawyers says itprovence he was too casual to committed a crime the maid attorney says she is reenacting the attack. new york prosecutors dropped charges after losing confidence in the victim's story.

if you want to quit smoking, the task is tougher in american. according to the american lung association the state is 3rd worst because of the lack ofhelp it provide. they say the state's help line is underfunded when compared to the national standard. it's a race against time to save america's symbol. as alex demetrick reports w. a bald eagle gets in trull, it's local help -- in trouble, it's local help to the rescue. >> reporter: if it can't fly it can't feed or protect itself. that's the dire spot an injured eagle found itself in in anne arundel county. >> i think because it was out there for so long with a lot of -- not lot of nourishment and it was getting weaker, and it just didn't seem to fight too much. >> reporter: he is a maryland volunteer with the tri-state bird rescue and research center in delaware and responded when outdoorsmen adam spotted the injured eagle and the pair

captured it. after following the bird through thick undergrowth near davidsonville. after it was netted, they covered the head with a towel. >> and i sort of slide my hand down the side so i could feel the legs and got down to the feet and once it's the feet i know i am not going to get hit. >> reporter: when eagles are in trouble people go toextraordinary lengths to save them. a few years back u.s. park police say eagles were trapped in mud. >> we were one food whoever on the mud and i am on the skid and reaching back and grabbing the bird like that. >> reporter: both eagles were brought back to health and released into the wild. but not all fair so well. this bald eagle brought to the baltimore zoo suffered a injury similar to the one in davidsonville. >> there's trauma to the left will bow and fracture at the joint we can't repair. >> reporter: the eagle was too severely injured for them to save. not the happen underring hoped for. >> no, but happy ending is we

to lose. they are playing cleveland in pittsburgh and pittsburgh struggled but they lead the browns 14-3 late. we can't show you highlights because of network restrictions but we can tell you there was a serious scare for the steelers. quarterback ben roethlisberger was taken off the field with an ankle injury. x-rays were negative but for a while the steelers playoff hopes appeared to be in jeopardy. he did return to the game and the steelers are about to win and move into first place at least for the moment. now the ravens are preparing to face the winless colts in baltimore sunday. expected to be a win but the ravens certainly need to avoid injuries in doing so. joe flacco has to stay healthy for a superbowl run and unexspecialed absence from today's -- unexpected absence from today's practice the kicker sat out with a calf injury. no word on the severity of theilment or his status for sunday. you might say the kickers don't need a kicker to beat the colts. see the game here wjz coverage coming your way sunday at one.
