>> from the cities the city, to the counties to your neighborhood. >> more information about the man be hip the shootings on virginia tech's campus. hello again, here is what people will be talking about today, police now say the man who shot a campus officer used the same gun to kill himself. we have complete coverage of the shootings. danielle nottingham has the latest from the campus and gigi barnett speaks with local students forced into a lock- down. first here is danielle in blacksburg, virginia. >> reporter: police say they know the identity of the suspected gunman in thursday's deadly virginia tech shooting. >> he is not a virginia tech student. >> reporter: they are not releasing his name until they identify next of kin. police still do not know why he walked up to 39-year-old derek kraus during a routine traffic stop on campus and shot him. >> you can see his face covered in blood. >> reporter: police later found the suspect a half-mile away

wearing different clothes. they say he had stuffed the old clothes in a back pack. he apparently killed himself with the same gun. heavily armed police swarmed the campus as it went into lock- down for hours. the scene brought back memories of 5 years ago when a gunman killed 32 people before taking his own life. it remains the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. police say they have dashboard camera video of the suspect from the officer's car shows the man holding a handgun. >> the clothing that this individual had open at the vehicle and based on eyewitness descriptions match that of the clothing found in the back pack. >> crowds joined the virginia tech police force six months after the rampage. >> derek was a friend to many in our department. derek was a husband, he was a father. >> reporter: last night students lit candles to honor

him near the same memorial to the 2007 victims, an official vigil is scheduled for tonight. danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> police also now say there is a likely connection between the shooter and a car stolen from radford, virginia, some of the students are from right here and our complete coverage continues live weijia gigi barnett. >> reporter: good afternoon, while police do not have a moving for the shooting they know the gunman was not enrolled here and that has some students relieved this noon. virginia tech police have very few details about the shooter who killed one of their own and threw the campus into chaos, final exams were scheduled to start today. now they are on hold. >> it is definitely going to be hard to study because there are much more important things that are now in the back of

everyone's mind. reporter: carly is a senior and remembers where she was when the campus alert started. they were similar to the mass shooting in 2007. >> i was like you have got to be kidding me. this is not happening again. >> reporter: she talked with us by skype, so did lindsey, both are from maryland. >> you don't know when or where it is going to happen but it is not something you should worry about. >> reporter: the campus is mourning virginia tech officer derek kraus, performing a routine traffic stop. last night the university held a candlelight vigil for him. >> the man who passed was doing his job and like that is -- that is just saying enough. like i cannot imagine having a job that saves peoples lives. >> reporter: lindsey and carly both say they immediately locked themselves into their rooms when they received the alert. they say police did a better job of keeping them posted this time around. don, back to you. >> thank you very much, gigi, stay with us for complete coverage of the follow up to

after being hit by a car along the highway in southwest baltimore county last night in the lansdowne baltimore highlands area as she walked along annapolis boulevard. police say the 16-year-old later died. the driver of the car is not facing charges at this time. an investigation is underway this noon into the death of an inmate at the maximum security prison in allegheny county. the male prisoner was found unresponsive in his cell and later pronounced dead at the local hospital. more details are expected to be known once an autopsy is performed. another work zone speed camera is being added to the baltimore belt beltway. the latest one is there. critics continue to argue governments just use them to generate extra revenue but drivers will have a three week grace period before fines from this new camera start on january third. and taking live look

more than 80 people are dead following a fire at a hospital in india. investigators say the medical staff fled for their own safety and abandoned patients to the fire that has killed 89 people. police did arrest six hospital peoples on homicide charges. the hospital says it followed safety procedures and denied wrongdoing. no word on what caused that fire. u.s. marines released footage of a surprise attack by the taliban giving us a close look. the video was shot by a marine corps photographer in a small outpost in southern afghanistan. while the unit did suffer injuries all the marines are currently recovering or have been returned to duty. the wife of former penn state assistant football coach
