do not leave this room, until you're told. >> mystery motive. new information about the gunman who shot and killed a virginia tech police officer. >> hi, i'm kai jackson. mary is off. here's what people are talking about. virginia tech in mourning. police continue to piece together the events that let the -- left a police officer dead and the campus in lockdown. danielle nottingham reports for wjz. investigators are now calling the shooting a murder-suicide. >> reporter: this is where police officer derek kraus lost his life. today, it's the site of a makeshift memorial to thursday's campus shooting. >> we're just trying to do everything that we can for his family. >> reporter: police say kraus was sitting in his patrol car, when the gunman approached on foot and shot him.

the gunman then fled to the campus greenhouses, where he changed his clothes, in a likely attempt to evade police. >> taking off a pullover top and a wool cap and putting them in a backpack, which he then left there at the greenhouses. >> reporter: 30 minutes later, virginia tech was swarming with over 100 police officers. a half mile from where officer kraus was shot, another officer spotted the gunman, acting nervous. seconds later, the gunman took his own life, with the same gun used to kill officer kraus. >> reporter: police are working on a possible motive. but they can confirm the gun mance r -- gunman was not a student here at virginia tech. and they believe he acted alone. >> reporter: they also suspect he is the same man who held up a real estate office at gunpoint earlier thursday, and stole an suv. students and staff are still shaken. many remember the 2007 shooting that left 33 students dead.

symptoms of listeria can take up to two months to appear, which is why the illnesses showed up for several months after the recall. this is the deadliest foodborn outbreak in the u.s. since 1924. >> dirty equipment is being blamed for the spread of the potentially deadly bacteria. missing american in iran. for the first time, they release hostage video they received from captors. tara mergener reports for wjz. robert leavenner's family released a video of their own. >> reporter: this video shows hostage robert levinson, a retired fbi agent, who disappeared inside iran. >> i have been treated well. i need the help of the united states government to answer the requests of the group that has held me for 3 1/2 years. >> reporter: his family is releasing the tape it received last november. and levinson's son david, is

sending has own video message to his father's captors. >> i am sending this message because you need to know what you want our family to do, so my father can come home safely. >> reporter: the 63-year-old father of 7, went missing nearly five months ago. he was working as a private investigator when he traveled to iran. the u.s. government believed iranian intelligence officials picked him up. but they never had solid intelligence on who had him or where. >> they raised more questions about who was holding levinson hostage. but they prompted the state department to launch the talks with iranian officials to find him. >> we have been sharing relevant information that we have about his case, with many governments, to see what we can do. >> reporter: iran's government denies it had anything to do with levinson's disappearance. his family hopes their new video message will reach his captors and increase pressure on the diplomatic effort to bring him home. >> reporter: tara mergener, wjz

eyewitness news. >> investigators believe levinson's captors could have moved him to pakistan or afghanistan. the ultimate insult. they died fighting for their country. and their incinerated remains are tossed into a landfill. today, the air force says the problems at dover air force base mortuary have been fixed. the remains of at least 274 u.s. service members were dumped in a landfill in 2008. they say it was from families. they will not notify any of the families involved. but if contacted by them, the air force says it will conduct as much information as possible. the wife of former county executive is locked up for her role in obstructing justice in her husbanda case. >> reporter: the judge did not buy leslie johnson's explanation that this was just a spur-theof-the moment decision to protect her husband.

>> reporter: court cameras kept away. as she entered greenbelt with her team of lawyers this morning. they later helped her outaf bay a -- out a back door. she will be headed to prison for her role in the corruption scheme that landed her husband, former county executive jack johnson, in jail for seven years. prosecutors caught him taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from developers, in exchange for political favors. >> they bragged their whole career. prosecutor -- i prosecuted jack johnson. [ laughter ] >> reporter: what led to his wife's downfall was how she tried to stash the cash when the fbi was raiding her home. >> what do you want me to do with this money? they are banging -- >> put it in your panties and walk out of the house. >> no. but i mean all of this cash, jack. i got the one from -- >> put it in your panties, leslie. >> reporter: leslie johnson told the judge, i am extremely sorry and ashamed of my

conduct. i take full responsibility for my actions on that day. i did not know anything about the criminal conduct my husband engaged in. but the judge said she was fully aware her husband was crooked. "you are not an innocent spouse "he told her, you are a complicit spouse, you helped him conceal it, you knew what he was doing. she'll serve a year in prison, perform 200 hours of community service and have to pay back $200,000. >> one day at a time, it will all be over and we'll be better for it. >> reporter: johnson will report for her prison sentence on march 8th. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> johnson resigned her seat on the county council afternoon she pled guilty. pros -- after she pled guilty. prosecutors say she only ran for office with her husband, in an effort to extort others. she denies those charges. police found the body of

brandon hudson. he had been should shot to death. police say there had been no sign of forced entry. no gun was recovered. there is still no suspect and no motich. we'll have an update for you, new at 5:00 and 6:00. a short time ago, baltimore county police identify a girl killed in an accident. 16-year-old bridget was struck and killed along annapolis road in ohio avenue. harold was rushed to shock trauma, where she died. right now, no charges are pending against the driver. turning to the weather. it was a bit warmer outside today. here's a live look at blue skies and bright sunshine on a beautiful december afternoon. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk is here with first warning weather. it was really a beautiful day. 5 or 6 degrees warmer than it was yesterday. but we'll go back to more cool temps for the weekend. take a look at radar. nothing around here whatsoever. temperatures now around 51 degrees. normal high is 47. to the west, there is a frontal system with a couple of snow showers and rain showers across

prosecutors want prison time for slugger barry bonds. they were objecting to a recommendation that bonds get this. bonds was convicted in april of lying to a grand jury when he denied knowing he taking performance-enhancing drugs. federal guidelines recommend a prison sentence of 15 to 21 months. sad news tonight for the dugar family. michelle dugar, the mother of "19 children" and the star of the tlc show has suffered a miscarriage. she found out last light -- about the child when she went to the doctor to learn the baby's sex. the couple made the pregnancy public once dugar entered her second trimester. if your mother told you not to eat raw cookie dough, she was right. a new study finds if you don't bake it first, it could send you to the hospital. >> reporter: people who love cookies sometimes like the raw cookie dough, even better. >> well, i love it. i love it until i get a

stomachache. >> reporter: but a stomachache could be the least of your problems. the cdc says that eating raw cookie dough, whether homemade or store bought, could make you seriously sick. >> you shouldn't eat raw cookie dough, regardless of what flavor or where you got it. >> reporter: the newest research is based on an e. coli outbreak two years ago, which sent 35 people to the hospital. the bacteria causes fever and stomach pain. in the worst cases, it can cause kidney failure. the cdc's investigation pointed to ready-to-bake, prepackaged cookie dough and led to a major recall. >> blows my mind. you're going to tell me there is possibly e. coli in cookie dough? >> and if you're really hooked, the cdc says ready-to-eat products like cookie dough ice cream are okay. >> reporter: they're still not sure which ingredient caused the 2009 outbreak, but they've identified flour as the likely

culprit. >> flour is an unbaked product. and it doesn't usually undergo specific process to kill pathogens. >> a fact that won't stop nicholas yarden. >> cookie dough, i don't think it's a problem. i don't think it's a menace and i will continue doing it for the rest of my life. >> reporter: a decision doctors say is simply not worth the risk. ales -- alison harmelin, wjz eyewitness news. >> the 2009 outbreak led to the recall of more than 3 1/2 million packages of cookie dough. a big day to end the week on wall street. all the major markets posted gains. dow was up 187. s&p up 21. nasdaq up 50. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> stocks ended the week with a rally, after european nations agreed to work together to tackle the region's debt

crisis. all 17 nations that use the euro will sign a treaty that gives essential authority closer oversight of their budget. britain, which does not use the euro, rejected the treaty. consumer sentiment is at a six- month high, as more people become confident in their own finances. and the overall economy. that has retailers happy since confident consumers tend to spend more, especially during this critical holiday shopping season. the u.s. trade deficit narrowed in october, to its lowest point of the year. the commerce department says it saturday fourth straight monthly drop as americans brought fewer foreign cars and imported less oil. a new smart phone application, allowed shoppers to receive a discount if they shop online. the new amazon app, called price check, is now offering shoppers a 5% discount on its website if they go into the store and snap a bar code. the catch? you have to use the discount the day they scan the bar code. it is the first deal amazon has

well, pretty sunset. >> nice day. very frosty morning. but it warmed up very nicely this afternoon. temperatures running above our average for this time of year, which is around 47, although we're in the 20s this morning. right now, take a look at temperatures. the little bit of sun beginning to go down. with a few high clouds to the west. there will be a front going through later tonight. take a look at these temps. the front has some precip with it. all of the precip, mainly in the form of rain showers, heading up towards northwest of pennsylvania. it will not bring us any precip. but it will bring us a few clouds overnight into the morning hours. then the winds go back to the northwest. and it will get chillier than it was today. we're at 51 degrees now. dew point, way down. very dry air. 46% humidity.

sun is setting. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. >> prosecutors build their case against jerry sandusky. questions are raised about what his wife knew about his alleged sexual misconduct. ines ferre has more for wjz. >> the wife of jerry sandusky is responding to allegations that she may have known her husband was sexually abusing boys in their home. through her attorney, dottie sandusky said she has been devastated by the false accusations that such a terrible incident ever occurred in her home. she said she and her husband don't know why these young men have made these false accusations, but we want everyone to know they are untrue. at least one accuser told the jury sandusky was home when he was attacked at home and he screamed for help. the former football coach is under house arrest, facing more than 50 counts of child sex

abuse. his attorney says the scandal will overshadow the sanduskys forever. >> we have nowhere to go, folks, but up. because public opinion convicted jerry the first day these charges were filed on november 5th. >> reporter: sandusky has a preliminary court hearing tuesday. several of his victims are expected to speak, including victim 1. >> reporter: in the grand jury report, victim 1 testified that sandusky abused him more than 20 times between 2007 and 2008. has lawyer is angry that sandusky is denying the allegations. >> it's adding insult to injury, to first serially abuse victim 1, my client, and then on top of it, to effectively call him a liar. >> reporter: the sketch-year- old-- 67-year-old sandusky admits to showering with boys in a nonsexual way, but claims he never did anything criminal. ines ferre, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, critics say former penn state coach joe paterno could have done more to stop the

alleged abuse. media outlets who did not turn over an incriminating audio tape. kai is in the newsroom to explain the move that sparked a media fire. >> reporter: the issue is when journalists must knowledge with police. espn and another both had taped copies of a phone call that implicated head coach bernie fine years ago. neither turned the tape over to police and neither reported the story. now, both media outlets are defending themselves saying they are not responsible to publish materials that they are not confident to publish. >> the tape became public, after a second accuser said he had been molested by the former basketball coach. a woman pepper sprays 20 shoppers on black friday. ann sterling reports, the los angeles district attorney has decided not to charge that woman with a crime. >> yeah, i am angry.

i'm hurt. i'm upset. i'm angry. it's not right. >> reporter: carmen johnson is angry that felony charges are not being filed against that- year-old elizabeth macias, the woman accused of attacking 20 customers at a wal-mart with pepper spray, during a shopping frenzy on black friday. >> i know there was some kind of intent there, there had to have been, for her to walk in there with that, knowing what the crowd was going to be like. >> carmen and her daughter were also part of that crowd. they stood in line behind macias, waiting for a pallet of x-box games to be open. >> she said, i have pepper spray. and they told me if i feel like my life is in danger, i can use it. >> reporter: the district attorney's office will not say whether macias acted in self- defense. but they did issue this statement, we reviewed the evidence, we found no felony in this case. we referred it to the city attorney's office. it is up to the city attorney to determine if a misdemeanor

crime was committed. >> you're kidding me? wow. i mean, a lot of people were hurt because of that. >> reporter: carmen disagrees with the d.a.'s office and says some type of charge needs to be filed. >> because there were people with their eyes all bloodshot red and crying. and this one girl was yelling because they were putting solution in her eyes. charges should definitely have been -- she should have been charged, at least with something. >> that was ann sterling reporting. firefighter his to treat 10 people for exposure to the pepper spray. macias later turned himself in. a remote-controlled model airplane lands inside a federal facility in massachusetts. officials say the incident isn't related terrorism. but the fbi is checking it out anyway. three years ago, a muslim was arrested for plotting to fly remote-controlled model plane. packed with explosives at the u.s. capitol. an investigation today in

the deablght of an inmate at a maryland prison. a 57-year-old man was found dead at a maximum security prison. the man was serving 40 years for rape. an autopsy will determine exactly how he died. the time of day your baby det -- gets a shot could actually make a difference in the time you put them down at night. >> reporter: well, it's interesting. according to a new study, infants may receive more soundly when -- sleep more soundly when they receive their shots in the afternoon. those vaccinated after 1:30 p.m., slept about 30 minutes longer. this had nothing to do with their age, weight or amount of tylenol. most infants also showed an increase in body temperature. doctors say that indicates that the vaccine is taking effect. denise, back to you. >> researchers say parents should also make sure their baby gets plenty of sleep before the immunizations. in today's wjz consumer

air horn. notifying firefighters to evacuate. they believe they had gotten all 12 residents out. but then, word someone could still be inside. >> one of the outs leaving said there was someone in the rear bedroom in the back. >> reporter: so the fire chief decided to go back in. >> reporter: a secondary search by the fire department was then conducted and in the initial stages of the search, the rear of the structure collapsed. this collapse trapped two firefighters, one in the cellar, and one on the first floor. >> reporter: a mayday call. two firefighters were trapped inside. >> the back of the building had collapsed. and a fireman was punching a hole through the brick foundation to get into the basement. >> reporter: rescue 1, firefighter brian carroll, a 14- year member of the worcester force, was rescued alive. but his partner, firefighter john davies, a 17-year veteran,

who had battled the cold warehouse storage fire 12 years ago, did not survive. >> the members of my department performed admirably, under extremely dangerous circumstances, to remove their brothers from the collapsed structure. >> he lost his life doing something he enjoyed, something he loved, his job. and just to remember him as somebody who gave it all, for the community he protects and that he's a hero. >> city records showed that the building that burned had 30 code violations in the past three years. for mice, rats and illegal heaters. stay a horrible fire ball explosion heats up in washington. watch this. five bullets hit a police officer's car. when he arrived at the scene of the fire. the shooting triggered a standoff. firefighters and the s.w.a.t. team faced 90 minutes of shots fired from the home. they found four bodies and four dead dogs in the rubble. the victim in an airplane

propeller accident improves in dallas. 23-year-old lauren scruggs is walking and smiling again. scruggs was severely injured after walking under the spinning blades of a propeller. scruggs lost her left hand and has no recognition of the accident. her family said she looked at the mirror for the first time, saying, quote, it's not that bad. she has lost sight in one eye but is expected to fully recover. if you feel as if you have a hard time remembering things, you're not alone. doctors here in baltimore have helpful tips. >> i'm carey well. >> reporter: you've seen the show. >> only a few people in the world have the ability to remember everything. >> really? >> yes. there are people who can remember everything. >> i'm one of them. >> and they never forget anything at all. >> it's not up here. it's back here. your temperral lobes. >> the part of the brain that is particularly important for short-term memory sits inside the temperral lobe.
