the gunman then fled to the campus greenhouses, where he changed his clothes, in a likely attempt to evade police. >> taking off a pullover cop and -- top and a wool cap and putting them in the backpack, which he then left in the greenhouses. >> reporter: 30 minutes later, virginia tech was swarming with over 100 police officers. a half mile from where officer kraus was shot, another officer spotted the gunman acting nervous. seconds later, the gunman took his own life, with the same gun used to kill officer kraus. >> reporter: police are, working on a possible motive, but they can confirm the gunman was not a student here at virginia tech. and they believe he acted alone. >> reporter: they also suspect he is the same man who held up a nearby real estate office at gunpoint, earlier thursday, and stole an suv. students and staff are still shaken. many remember the 2007 shooting that left 33 students dead. >> you never think it could happen twice, in one place.

that case. a developing story at this hour. a morgan state university student gunned down inside his own apartment. vic is live in the newsroom with the investigation. and growing concerns about violence in the victim's neighborhood. vic? >> well, denise. city police were called to an apartment in the 2900 block of north calvary street late last night. inside, they found brandon hudson. a student at morgan state university. police say hudson was shot in the head on the couch. right now, police have very little to go on in the search for hudson's killer. >> didn't appear to be any signs of fored force-- force entry or struggle, beyond the obvious. >> this is the latest of a strength string of incidents. including a double shooting late last month and another shooting in october. >> wjz is live on the morgan campus with an update on this investigation, coming up new at

6:00. the -- the wife is heading to federal prison. mike hellgren reports she claims she knew nothing of her husband's corruption. >> reporter: leslie johnson felt she should not serve any time behind bars. the judge felt otherwise. >> he left with a one year and one day sentence, all for hiding thousands of dollars her husband, jack johnson, extorted from others. >> okay. thank you, thank you. >> reporter: here he is, taking a bribe on camera. the case against mrs. johnson was largely made by this wire tap, made on their home. >> what do you want me to do with this money? they are banging. >> put it in your panties and walk out of the house. >> reporter: johnson told the judge, i'm extremely sorry for my conduct. i take full responsibility for my actions that day. i did not know anything about the criminal conduct my husband engaged in.

the judge didn't buy that, saying it is impossible for me to believe that she would destroy a $100,000 check and hide all of that money in her underwear if she didn't know anything. she stayed on the county council until she pled guiltle. prosecutor -- guilty. prosecutors say she only ran for office to help with her united -- her husband's extortion. >> reporter: the judge also ordered she perform 240 hours of hands-on community service once she gets onut. at u.s. -- gets out. >> reporter: at u.s. district court, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> johnson has to pay a $30,000 fine. she will head to prison in march. new at 6:00, we'll tell you where she is likely to serve her time. a teenage girl is hit and killed, walking along a baltimore county highway. 16-year-old bridget harold of hale thorpe was walking along

baltimore annapolis road. the driver stayed on the scene of the accident. and no charges are expected to be filed. a proposed merger between two maryland university campuses is voted down. they decided not to unite the two. they did add that the schools should increase clabs. -- collaboration. maryland senator mike miller asked to study the merger. miller believes it would bring in more research money. a pleasant and clear end to the workweek. here's a live look outside right now. we've seen plenty of sun all day. and look at that beautiful sunset. beautiful lieu -- hues in the sky. bob turk is here to tell us if our luck will hold out through the weekend. bob? >> beautiful moon out there as well. take a look at radar. nothing around here. just a few high clouds out to the west. but as we go a little further out to the west, there's a front out there, with some rain and a few snow showers. although most of it is really not even reaching the ground.

as we'll tells you, it's been a chaotic 24 hours at virginia tech. the campus is locked down after a police officer is shot and killed in a murder-suicide. among those caught up in the terrifying situation at the campus, many students, students who are here from maryland. wjz is live. >> police confirmed that the shooter was not enrolled at virginia tech university. and that has many vtu students relieved tonight. >> virginia tech police and students spent the last 24 hours on high alert. after a gunman shot and killed one of their own and threw the campus into chaos. final exams were set to start

today. now, they're on hold. >> it makes me really angry that someone would come on our campus and give us that name again. give us that name that our campus is unsafe. >> reporter: lindsey tinkersly is a junior. she talked through skype. lindsay says the campus is trying to return to normal. and fears that others will believe their school is unsafe. >> it's sad that we've got a name for this. but it's not like that here. >> reporter: lindsey receives several camp us alerts on her cell phone, minutes after the shooting. they were similar to the ones students received after the 2007 massacre. btu student and hereford high student carly alderman said police did a better job keeping students posted on the shooting. >> there were tons of rumors flying around. but it was hard to decide what was true and what wasn't. >> reporter: lindsey says it will bring closure to the campus. >> i mean, it makes me

emotional to say this, but i cannot imagine having to put my life for other people that you don't even know. like he gave his life for us. >> and both students say their parents were concerned shortly after the shooting, but now that they have been in touch with their students, they're okay tonight. back to you. >> all right, gigi. thank you. and wjz wants to tell you that virginia tech will hold a vigil on campus tonight, in memory of the fallen officer. well, prosecutors build their case against jerry sandusky, questions are raised about what his wife knew about his alleged sexual misconduct. ines ferre has the latest for wjz. >> reporter: the wife of jerry sandusky is responding to allegations that she may have known her husband was sexually abusing boys in their home. >> reporter: through her husband's attorney, dottie sandusky says she has been devastated by the false accusations that such a terrible incident ever occurred in my home. she says she and her husband don't know why these young men have made these false

accusations, but we want everyone to know they are untrue. at least one accuser told a grand jury that sandusky's wife was home while he was attacked in the basement and screamed for help. >> mrs. sandusky, any comments? >> reporter: the former penn state football coach is under house arrest, facing more than 50 counts of child sex abuse. his attorney says the scandal will overshadow the sanduskys forever. >> we have nowhere to go, folks, but up. because public continue opinion convicted jerry the first day that these files were charged -- charges rp filed. >> reporter: he has his first court hearing tuesday. and several of his victims are expected to testify. >> reporter: victim 1 testified that sandusky abused him more than 20 times between 2007 and 2008. his lawyer is anger-- angry that sandusky is denying the allegations. >> it is bad enough to abuse my

victim. then on top of it to effectively call him a liar. >> reporter: the sketch-year- old sandusky admits admits to -- 67-year-old sandusky admits to showering with the boys, but not a sexual way. he claims he never did anything illegal. >> reporter: critics sea coach joe paterno could have done more to stop the alleged abuse. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at traffic control. >> reporter: friday afternoon, on the beltway, never a good situation there. heavy delays on the inner loop, from greenspring to 95. the outer loop, the exact opposite. heavy there from 95 to greenspring in that direction. traffic moving at about 40 miles an hour. if you're traveling on the west side inner loop, that's just crawling along there from 95 to security boulevard. and 70 westbound, completely jammed up there from the patapsco river bridge to marriottsville road. as far as 95 goes, in the southbound direction, stop and go from the bw parkway to 175. we're also seeing a lot of

handful of midshipmen. but on this day, a relatively new tradition continues. it's only 29 years old. >> it's a great time, a good opportunity for us to be the face of the brigade. >> reporter: so with the whole brigade watching, the 13th company is a sign to run a football to the site. army-navy game. >> go, navy! >> reporter: but why company 13? well, in the early '80s, it was thought that they were unlucky, so they wanted to get the company off the yard. >> i wanted to get the company off the yard. because we're perceived as unlucky. but i think our record since then speaks to the controversy. >> reporter: so to the original company who ran the ball for the first time, running along, the 13th company is led away by the commandant of the navy. >> it is on. >> shelby runs along and takes these pictures for us. this year, the game is at fedex field. so the run was lengthepped to go as far as towson. south of some of the memorials on the mall.

47 in westminster. 52/27 today. many suburban areas with 25 degrees this morning. 47, 30 now. and the record high, 73 back in 1966. and 18 -- 1876, 4. 4 degrees above zero. probably had snow on the ground that morning. right now, no wind here at all. but it's been a southerly wind all day long. that brought in this milder air. to the west, beginning to shift more to the west. it will bring a few clouds with it. already this morning, we had snow showers across from new york, pennsylvania. and portions of virginia. however, things are pretty dry. just a few sprinkles and a few snowflakes. most not even reaching the ground. by the time it gets to us, we don't expect to see any precip out of it. garrett county may see a few snow showers. for us, the front will go through. you see that little band of clouds there, coming through late tonight. into the morning hours.

and tomorrow afternoon, by probably before noon, it will clear out. a little breezy and cold air coming in. tomorrow's highs, just in the low 40s, compared to the low 50s. so tomorrow, it's going to feel pretty chilly. but it will be sunny all afternoon. eventually, it will also be cooler on sunday. but high pressure moves off the coast. by next week, winds go back to the southwest once again. and we're looking for another milder trend. there's a warm front showing up there on sunday. but early next week, temperatures getting back up, slightly above normal once again. northwest winds on the bay, 10 to 15 knots. bay temp around, there you see it, 49 degrees. sunrise, 7:14. sets at 4:44. been here for a few days now. tonight, then, there's that beautiful moon. but later tonight, we see partly cloudy skies. let's call it chilly, 28. it will clear out, and be breezy. and it will feel breezy with a high of 42. that will make it one of the coolest days we've seen so far

it's 6:29. 48 degrees and clear. good evening. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. the anne arundel county teacher, accused of sexually abusing multiple students is out on bail. we'll is -- wjz is live at glen burnie high. weijia jiang is there and has disturbing new details on the allegations and reaction from the school. weijia? >> reporter: kai, we got a hold of these just-released charging documents. authorities say acted like a pled tor, going -- predator, going from young girl to young girl. an accused predator, who is now out on bail. >> reporter: jeffrey sears, jr., posted a $150,000 bail

friday, reduced from the original $300,000. >> angry, disgusted. really don't want her to be here. >> i think it's gross. really gross. >> reporter: sears, an english teacher and basketball coach, is accused of sexually abusing at least three female students between 15 and 16 years old. just-released charging documents reveals one 16-year- old said she performed oral sex on sears in his classroom. they exchanged naked photos via text and he sent video of himself masturbating. >> unbelievable. i can't believe they did that in the classroom and were not caught by anybody. there's so many people in the school. >> reporter: another said that he took her to a stairwell at school to touch her with his fingers. she said, i guess he was getting so much pleasure from it, he was getting really vicious with it, and he started to make me bleed. >> i think it's appalling. and it makes me scared for them

going there. >> reporter: and october this year, one victim said she also performed falasio on him in the classroom and had sex with him twice in the car in an alley behind their house. they also did it in his bedroom on 400 block of luther road. >> this is a time for glen burnie to be healed and be concerned about our students and certainly the victims in this situation. >> reporter: a spokesman for the board of education says as soon as possibility, sometime next week, sears will sit down with the board to have a predisciplinary hearing. after that, the superintendent recommended that he be suspended without pay. for now, he's still getting a check. weijia, thank you. sears faces a long list of charges, including various sex offenses and perverted practice. anne arundel county police have arrested curt melvin singleton and charged him with sex abuse. they say he was involved in at least three acts of sexual

misconduct with the victim. singleton is being held on a half million bond. an investigation is under way at a maximum security prison in cumberland, following the death of an inmate. it happened at the north branch correctional institution. the 57-year-old was found unresponsive in his cell and later died at the hospital. they say he was serving a 40- year sentence for rape. but they have not yet released his name. it was the black friday incident that shocked everyone. a woman videotaped, using pepper spray on fellow shoppers. vic is in the newsroom to let us know if she'll face charges. >> the incident happened at a los angeles wal-mart and grabbed headlines after this national video surfaced. >> my eyes are burning. my eyes! >> reporter: 32-year-old elizabeth macias turned himself in to police the next day. at least 20 customers complained about nose and throat irritation. however, the los angeles district attorney said he found no evidence that a felony was committed. police say they interviewed dozens of witnesses and examined the security video.

macias could still face misdemeanor charges from city prosecutors. >> macias refused to answer any questions after surrendering to place. -- police. nearly five years after virginia tech suffers the worst rampage shooting in history, they are shot up again. this is dredging up difficult memories. >> he's not a student. but they still don't know why he targeted 39-year-old officer derek kraus, during a routine traffic stop on campus and shot him. >> it's very much the fundamental part of the investigation now is determining what -- and for what reason this man walked -- approached officer kraus and took his life. >> reporter: police found the suspect, about a half mile away in a parking lot. he changed clothes to try to throw police off. as an officer approached, he shot and killed himself. heavily-armed police, including s.w.a.t. teams, flooded the campus,

which was locked down for hours. >> do not leave this room until you're told, do you understand? >> reporter: the scene was sadly familiar for students. 37 were killed and 47 injured in the 2007 massacre. collin goddard was in the spring of his senior year when the gunman shot him four times and hid inside his classroom. he talked with jessica kartalija in april. >> i was in total disbelief on what was going on. bullets started coming through our door. and everybody hit the floor. i just dove under the desk. i had nowhere to go. and tried to act like i was already dead. >> reporter: collin still has three of the four bullets in had his body a metal rod in his leg, but he considers himself lucky. of the 17 students in class that day, he's one of only seven who survived. collin is now with the james brady organization to prevent gun violence. he spends his day on capitol hill, lobbying lawmakers for universal background checks. >> i'm not talking about removing all guns or banning guns, i just want to make sure

we do a better job of checking people so guns go into the hands of the good guys, not the bad guys. >> reporter: it's hard for the school not to look back at that difficult day in 2007. >> we're all here because of an angry young man who had easy access to violent killing weapons four years ago. >> there's no way, though, that anyone ever becomes to the pain that you feel when your campus is visited by violence. >> reporter: they said the system implemented in 2007 worked exactly as anticipated with text messages going out to students every few minutes. stay tuned for complete coverage at virginia tech. for instant updates any time, log onto wjz.com. baltimore releases a new report on the city's health issues. the report looks at determinants of health, like housing, school quality, and safe places to exercise. according to the assessment,

over half of the deaths in recent years in baltimore's neighborhoods were avoidable. the new data will pinpoint the most pressing health issues. city officials will meet with communities and pick projects. the debate over medical marijuana in maryland takes a new twist. political reporter pat warren explains, the work group assigned to administer it, splits on recommendations for a plan. >> these marylanders have illnesses that compel them to use marijuana, at the risk of arrest and conviction. >> and i didn't want to do something illegal. but i was driven to eat and i was driven to feel better. >> can i legally do it? no. do i want to be able to get it legally? absolutely. >> i was being arrested and taken to jail. >> reporter: testimony in the general assembly, in favor of medical marijuana this year included baltimore native and celebrity montel williams, who uses marijuana to ease the pain of multiple sclerosis. >> 25 hours a day, 365 days a

year, period. it doesn't go away. >> reporter: a work group issued its report today. it contains two proposals. one restricts youth and oversight to teaching hospitals with research overseen by the health department. the other authorizes certified physicians to dispense marijuana to their patients. secretary of health joshua sharpsteen prefers plan a. >> i call it the yellow light approach. i know people want a green- light approach. and i don't think that is it. some want a red light approach. and i'm not there either. i think the best way is a balanced way to handle these factors. >> reporter: either way, they'll have to hash it out next year. reporting from the state health department in baltimore, i'm pat warren. now, back to you on tv hill. and lawmakers who sponsored the legislation this year want the patient's physician to have authority over the use of marijuana. time for a quick look at some of the fors you'll find in

him home. tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> investigators think he could have moved into pakistano afghanistan. the 10-year-old shot by his mother during a standoff with police died. police say timothy grimmer died. his 12-year-old sister died wednesday, from injuries she sustained. police say the mother shot the children then killed herself, after she had been denied food stamps. the rutgers university student accused of spying on his roommate was back in court. 19-year-old darren raffy turned down a plea deal that would have kept him out of prison. ravi is accused of using a web camera to spy on his roommate's intimate encounter with another man. >> we want to know why he's rejected the plea. simple answer, simple principle of law. he's innocent. he's not guilty.

that's why he rejected the plea. >> reporter: ravi's roommate jumped off the george washington bridge, just days after he learned of the web cam. a court date is set for february 21st. christmas may come a little late for congress. president barack obama says congress won't be going anywhere, until lawmakers reach a deal, extending the current payroll tax cut. the senate turned down two separate pay roll tax plans yesterday. the president's own vacation is set to start next week. but he says he will stay as long as it takes. well, nearly every country in the european union is backing the new plan. but as heather cobar reports for wjz, britain is refusing to take part. >> reporter: european leaders pose for a group photo in brussels, after 10 hours of intense negotiations. most of our nations are pledging to move ahead with a new treaty to rescue the euro. but britain, which doesn't use

the currency, rejected the plan. >> what he's offering isn't in britain's interest. so i didn't yeah agree to it. -- didn't agree to it. >> reporter: they said nicolas sarkozy made unacceptable demands that would exempt the uk from regulations. so they the move forward without them. the agreement enforces strict rules on european countries to balance their budgets and penalizes those that overspend. >> reporter: with britain on the sidelines, the rest of europe is expected to have a plan in place within three months. however, some analysts say bringing confidence back to the market could take much longer. >> there's a lot of debt out there, a massive debt. it's going to take years, if not a generation, to resolve. >> reporter: but germany's chancellor was upbeat. she called the treaty a major breakthrough. the agreement comes 20 years to the day, after european leaders wrote the treaty that created

a fallen firefighter is being remembered today as a hero in massachusetts. karen anderson reports for wjz. the tragedy, carrying a three- alarm blaze at an apartment building. >> reporter: this cell phone video shows the arlington street triple decker in a ball of flames. >> it was blazing. yeabtsz even explain it. like the wind was so hard, it was pushing the fire this way. >> reporter: you can hear the air horns, notifying firefighters to evacuate. they believe they had gotten all 12 residents out. but then word someone could still be inside. >> one of those occupants leaving, they said there was a person in the rear of the building. and the bedroom in the back. >> reporter: so worcester's fire chief said they decided to go back in. >> a secondary search by the worcester fire department was then conducted for this trapped victim and in the initial stages of the search, the rear

of the structure collapsed. this collapse... trapped two firefighters, one in the cellar. and one on the first floor. >> reporter: a mayday call. two firefighters were trapped inside. >> the back of the building had collapsed. and a fireman was punching a hole through the brick foundation to get into the basement. >> reporter: rescue 1, firefighter brian carol, a 14- year member of the worcester force, was rescued alive. but his partner, firefighter john davies, a 17-year veteran, had battled a cold storage warehouse 12 years ago, did not survive. >> members of my department performed admirably, under extremely dangerous circumstances, to remove their brothers from the collapsed structure. >> he lost his life doing something he enjoyed, something he loved, his job. and just to remember him as somebody who gave it all. for his community. for the people he protects and that he's a hero.
