the wife of a former maryland county executive, will spend more than a year in jail, for her role in trying to cover up her husband's corruption. mike hellgren is in the courtroom with more on when she learned her sentence. >> reporter: the judge said leslie johnson knew this was tainted money. now she's going to prison. she rushed into court and left with a one year and one day prison sentence, all for hiding money her husband, jack johnson, extorted from developers. >> okay. okay. thank you. >> reporter: here he is, taking a bribe on camera. the case against mrs. johnson was largely based on this wire tap. >> what do you want me to do with this money? they are banging? >> put it in your panties and walk out of the house. >> reporter: johnson told the judge, i'm extremely sorry and ashamed of my conduct. i take full responsibility for my actions on that day. i did not know anything about the criminal activity my husband engaged in. the judge did not buy that, saying you are not an innocent

spouse. you are complicit spouse, you helped him conceal it. you knew what he was doing. >> i feel as though she should not have received any jail time. they have lost so much. one day at a time, it will be over and we'll all be better for it. >> reporter: she stayed on the county council after pleading guilty. prosecutors said he only ran for office to continue her husband's culture of corruption and that he funded her campaign with his dirty money. >> in government, there are many, many opportunities for corruption. it's the wrong people lined up in positions where they're able to exercise discretion. >> 40 hours of hands-on community service must be performed as well, once she gets out. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> leasely johnson -- leslie johnson must report to prison in march. she asked that she serve her sentence in alderson, in west virginia. her husband will seven his seven-year, three-month sentence at the buckner complex in north carolina. a morgan state university

student is killed inside his apartment. tonight, police are searching for the gunman. alex demetrick just finished talking with police and students. alex? >> reporter: the murder victim in this case is a senior here at morgan state. and news is still spreading through this campus. >> reporter: up until this evening, students at morgan state were focused on classes ending with finals just ahead. that was before word began to spread that one of their own had been murdered. 22-year-old brandon hudson was a senior business major. he was found shot to death thursday night. >> you expect to be somewhere, where they protect you. but i guess when you're off campus, it's really like off campus. >> reporter: brandon hudson lived off campus in an apartment in charles village. a friend found him shot in the head on his couch. >> detectives responded to the location, after a sprend of -- friend of the victim grew concerned after being unable to reach him. he responded to his home and once entered, realized that the victim was shot. >> reporter: police found no

signs of a break-in or struggle. motive remains as unknown as the suspect. if anyone in the neighborhood happened to see anything suspicious, albeit, an individual walking away hurredly, a -- hurriedly, a scar screeching away. anything like that would be helpful to us. >> reporter: obviously grieving. and the northern community is grieving. and we just want everyone to know, we want his family to know that his morgan family is standing with them. >> college is supposed to be a place where we're supposed to come to get ahead in life and not become a statistic. but for him to be trying to better himself and for somebody to take his life, it impacts not only him. but for those ever us watching theurn -- the upper classmen. that we have to watch something like that on campus. >> to anyone who may have seen this on thursday, in the charles village area is asked

to call baltimore city police. we are learning more tonight about the man who opened fire on the campus of virginia tech. just in a moment -- just moments ago, the gunman was identified as a 22-year-old student at nearby radford university. wjz has complete coverage of the deadly shooting. gigi barnett speaks with local students that took over the chaos of the campus am -- but we begin with danielle nottingham. >> reporter: this is where police officer derek kraus lost his life. today, it's the site of a makeshift memorial, to thursday's campus shooting. >> we're just trying to do everything that we can for his family. >> reporter: police say kraus was sitting in his patrol car, when the gunman approached on foot and shot him. the gunman then fled to the campus greenhouses, where he changed his clothes in a likely attempt to evade police. >> taking off a pullover top and a wool cap and putting them in a backpack, which he then left there at the greenhouses. >> reporter: 30 empties later -- 30 minutes later, virginia tech was swarming with over 100

police officers. a half mile from where officer kraus was shot, another officer spotted the gunman acting nervous. seconds later, the gunman took his own life, with the same gun used to kill officer kraus. >> reporter: police are working on a possible motive, but they can confirm the gunman was not a student here at virginia tech. and they believe, he acted alone. >> they also suspect he is the same man who held up a nearby real estate office at gunpoint earlier thursday and stole an suv. students and staff are still shaken. many remember the 2007 shooting that left 33 students dead. >> you never think it could happen twice in one place. >> the university is offering counseling to students. tonight, virginia tech holds a candlelight vigil for officer kraus. danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> and wjz's complete coverage continues with gigi barnett,

who has spoken to several students from maryland. >> as police search for a motive for the crime, maryland students who go to vtu or virginia tech, say they're relieved that he's not one of their own. >> reporter: virginia tech police and students spent the last 24 hours on high alert, after a gunman shot and killed one of their own and threw the campus into chaos. final exams were set to start today. now, they're on hold. >> it makes me really angry that someone would come in our campus and give us that name again, give us that name that our campus is unsafe. >> reporter: lindsey pinkersly is a student at virginia tech and a hereford high graduate. she talked with wjz through skype. lindsey says the camp us is trying to return back to normal and fears others will think their campus is not safe. >> it's just sad that we've gotten a name like that here. but it's not like that here. it's really say. >> reporter: lind see received several -- lindsey received

tonight. wjz is live at glen burnie high school. weijia jiang has details and reaction from the school. weijia? >> reporter: we got hold of these just-released charging documents that painted a picture of a man acting like a predator. an accused predator who is now out on bail. >> reporter: 29-year-old jeffrey sears, jr., posted a $150,000 bail friday. reduced from the original $3 million. on charges that have shaken the glen burnie high school community. >> angry, disgusted. really don't want her to be here. >> i think it's gross. really gross. >> reporter: sears, an english teacher and basketball coach is accused of sexually abusing at least three female students between the ages of 15 and 16 years old. just-released charging documents reveal one 16-year- old says she performed oral sex on sears in his classroom. they exchanged naked photos, via text. and he sent her a video of him,

master baiting. >> -- masturbating. >> it's unbelievable. i wouldn't think they would do that in a classroom and not get caught. there's so many people in the school. >> reporter: another victim told police when she was a freshman and manager of the basketball team, pierce took her to a safe well at -- stairwell at school to touch her with his fingers. she said, i guess he was getting so much pleasure with it, he started to go harder with it and he started to make me bleed. >> i think it's appalling. >> and one victim said she also performed falaborio -- alaskaio with-- falasio with him. also had sex with him and in his bedroom. >> this is a time for glen burnie to heal and move forward with our students and certainly the victims in this situation. >> reporter: and a spokesperson for the board of education says as soon as possible, sometime next week, sears will have a discipline hearing. the school board will then

recommend that he be suspended without pay. but for now, he is getting a check. >> sears faces a long list of charms, including various sex offenses and perverted practice. a glen burnie man is under arrest tonight. anne arundel county police say curt singleton abused a victim in his home. someone who walked in, reported the abuse to police. singleton is now being held. baltimore county police identify the teenage girl killed in an accident. 17-year-old bridget harold was struck and killed in the area known as baltimore highlands. harold was rushed to shock trauma, where she died. but right now, no charges are pending against the driver. the sun has set on a milder and sunny day. take a look outside now. what can we expect for the weekend? bob is live with a look at your first warning weather forecast. >> it was milder this afternoon. got into the low 50s tomorrow.

here's a live look outside right now. santa's house. he is a busy guy right now. >> we could use a little winter weather, don't you think? >> he probably would like it. >> it's going to be chilly this weekend. but no snow in our immediate forecast, just in case you wondered. it will be cooler than it was today. we got up to the low 50s. take a look at temps now, with clear skies, temporarily. 41 now. 32 out in oakland. 52, still ocean city. 47 in washington. hagerstown, 42. locally, low to mid40s in the region. 48, annapolis. kent island by the bay. which is 49 degrees by the way. 52/27 today. the average on this date is 47. and a low of 30.

however, 1966, it was 73. and in 1876, it was 4 degrees above zero. what a range you can have here in december. anyway, temperature-wise, windwise, it's just no wind around here. very light, southerly winds most of the day. now, tonight, they'll begin to turn more to the west and northwest. that will bring in a new, fresh, colder air mass, for the weekend. there's been some snow shower activity. very light stuff, across new york state. mostly lake-effect. and a little light flurry activity across portions of indiana, northern ohio, southern michigan. most of us didn't reach the ground, particularly. although chicago picked up a half inch. right now, to the west, that front moving across western p.a. pittsburgh getting a few flakes of snow. along the front, you do see the cloud cover. most of it will never make it over the mountains. just a dry air mass around here. front goes through later tonight, tomorrow morning, maybe a few clouds. a new air mass moves in. it will drop temperatures

tomorrow, about 10 degrees. so it will feel chilly tomorrow, compared to what we saw today. now, on sunday, still a cold day. by monday, this high moves off. and once again, they start getting the winds out of the southwest. it will start warming up again on tuesday and wednesday of next week. so on the bay tomorrow, a northwest wind at 10 to 15. and a small craft advisory out there on the bay. although it will be bright and sunny by afternoon. bay temp, and 49 degrees. tonight, look for clear to partly cloudy skies. chilly. it was a beautiful moon out. 28 by morning. tomorrow, lots of sunshine. it will be a breezy at times. and chilly day, compared to today. 42 is going to feel probably more like around 35. so if you're heading out the door, just for cooler temperatures than the actual arid -- actual arid temperatures. chilly and sunny for the ravens, around 40 to 42 degrees with a lot of sunshine. >> thank you, bob. still to come tonight on

it is 6:29, 41 degrees and clear in central maryland. good evening. thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. a new cloud of controversy, hanging over the wife of jerry sandusky tonight, after an accuser claims she knew about the sexual abuse, she fires back. ines ferre has the latest for wjz. >> reporter: the wife of jerry sandusky is responding to allegations that she may have known her husband was sexually abusing boys in their home. through an attorney, dottie sandusky says she has been devastated by the false accusations that such a terrible incident ever occurred in my home. she said she and her husband

don't know why. >> these young men have made these false accusations, but we want everyone to know they are untrue. at least one accuser told the grand jury that sandusky's wife was home when he was attacked in the basement and screamed for help. >> mrs. sandusky, any comment? >> reporter: the 51-year-old is under house arrest. his attorney says this scandal will haunt them forever. >> we have no place else to go but up because public opinion convicted him the first day. >> several victims are expected to speak. >> reporter: in the grand jury report, victim 1 testified sandusky abused him more than 20 times between 2007 and 2008. his lawyer is angry that sandusky denies all of the allegations. >> it's adding insult to injury to first serially abuse victim

1, my client. and then on top of it to effectively call him a liar. >> reporter: the sketch -- 67- year-old sandusky admits to showering with boys in a nonsexual way, but claims he never did anything criminal. ines ferre, wjz eyewitness news. >> a new poll shows pennsylvanians support the firing of penn state coach joe paterno. critics say he could have done more to stop the abuse. a retired agent is kidnapped in iran. >> i need the help of the united states government to answer the requests of the group that has held me for three and a half years. >> reporter: that is video of robert levinson, the 63-year- old florida man has been held in captivity for three years now. his family who received the video a year ago, chose to release it now in hopes it will speed up the process of freeing him. >> i'm sending this message because we need to know what you want our family to do so

that my father can come home safely. >> he said he was working as a private investigator in dubai when he went missing. but the state department dede nighs he was working -- denies he was working for the u.s. government. nearly four years after a deadly rampage in u.s. history, a gunman opens up again. this dredges up difficult and shocking memories. >> reporter: we're learning more about the shooting suspect, a person police say is responsible for a second shooting at virginia tech. >> reporter: police say they know who the gunman is and believe he acted alone. he's not a student. but they still don't know why he targeted 13 -- 39-year-old officer derek kraus during a routine traffic investigation. >> for what reason this man approached officer kraus and took his life. >> reporter: police found the suspect about a half mile away in a parking lot. he changed clothes to try to throw police off. as an officer approached, he

shot and killed himself. heavily-armed police, including s.w.a.t. teams, flooded the camp us, which was locked down for hours. >> do not leave this room until you're told. do you understand? >> reporter: the scene was sadly familiar for virginia tech students. 32 students were killed and 17 injured in the 2007 massacre. collin goddard was in the spring of his senior year when the gunman shot him four times and hid inside his classroom. he talked with jessica kartalija, in april. >> i was in total disbelief of what was going on. bullets started coming through our door and everybody hit the floor. i just dove under the desk. had nowhere to go. and tried to act like i was already dead. >> reporter: collin still has three of the four bullets in his body and a metal rod in his leg. but he considers himself lucky. of the 17 students in class that day, he's one of only seven who survived. collin is now with the james brady campaign to prevent gun violence. he spends his day on capitol hill, lobbying lawmakers for

university background checks for anyone trying to buy a gun. >> i'm not talking about removing all guns, i'm just saying we do a better job of checking people so hands go into -- guns go into the hands of good guys, not bad guys. >> reporter: it's hard for the school not to look back at that difficult day in 2007. >> we've all here because of an angry young man who had easy access to violent killing weapons four years ago. >> there's no way, though, that anyone ever becomes innerred to the pain that you feel when your campus is visited by violence. >> the university said the alert system implemented after the 2007 mass slaying worked as expected, with updates going to students every few minutes. >> and police have identified the gunman as 22-year-old roshathly. the shopper charged with

dousing black friday shoppers with pepper spray, won't face any charges. police have finished their investigation into elizabeth macias. they say she will only face a misdemeanor charge. though it was originally reported that she sprayed the crowd to get ahead, investigators say she may have acted in self-defense. a 57-year-old man was found dead in his cell in a maximum security prison. he has not been identified because his family had not been notified. the man was serving a sentence for rape. police hope an autopsy will determine how he died. baltimore police are hoping you can help them catch a robber. they say this man held up a cvs pharmacy. it happened on november 11th. according to the cashier, the suspect implied he had a gun and demanded money. he took off on foot with $46. if you recognize the suspect you're asked to call police. time now for a quick look

company is assigned to run a football to the site of the army-navy game. >> go, navy! >> reporter: but why company 13? well, in the early '80s, it was thought that they were unlucky. so they wanted to get the company off the yard. >> oh, it is to get the company off the yard because it is perceived as unlucky. but i think our record speaks to the contrary. >> for the first time, running along, the 13th company is led away by the commandant of the naval academy. >> it is on. >> reporter: company midshipman runs along and takes these pictures for us. this year, the game is at fedex field. so the run was lengthened to go as far north as towson. south as far as some of the memorials on the wall. the mids say the army needs its marathon team to run the ball down from new york. >> i find ironic. we just need a company to do it. >> pick anybody. >> we don't need our marathon team to do that.

an incredible spectacle, courtesy of the famed kilauea vol taino -- volcano in hawaii take a look at this ocean. travels through a neighborhood, which was pretty much abandoned a year ago. only one resident remains there. he reports it has gone around his house. kilauea has been continuously erupting since 1983. a firefighter is killed in the line of duty after a burning home collapses in massachusetts. john davies rushes into the building to search for the miss

person. but moments after they entered, the structure collapsed. firefighters pulled him from the rubble, but davies didn't survive. >> he lost his life doing his job. and just to remember him as somebody who gave it all for his community, for the people he protects. and that he's a hero. >> firefighters never found the person davies was trying to save. occupy boston protestors are keeping their tents pitched. >> starting fights! >> you destroy the laws of the land. >> the deadline set by mayor thomas menino for protestors to leave the city square has passed. nearly 1,000 people flooded the streets. and activists say they are not leaving. police arrested two demonstrators, rather, for blocking traffic. menino did not specify when the camp will be shut down. if your mother always told you not to eat raw cookie dough, it turns out, she may be right. a new study finds if you don't

bake it first, the dough could send you to the hospital. alison harmelin reports for wjz from new york. >> reporter: people who love cookies sometimes like the raw cookie dough even better. >> i love it, until i get a stomachache. >> reporter: but a stomachache could be the least of your problems. the cdc says that eating raw cookie dough, whether homemade or store bought, could make you seriously sick. >> you shouldn't eat raw cookie dough, regardless of what flavor or where you got it. >> reporter: the newest research is based on an e. coli outbreak two years ago, which sent 35 people to the hospital. the bacteria causes fever and stomach pain. in the worst cases, it can cause kidney failure. the cdc's investigation pointed to ready-to-bake, prepackaged cookie dough and led to a major recall. >> blows my mind that you can tell me that there is e. coli in cookie dough. >> reporter: and if you're really hooked, the cdc says ready-to-eat products like
