this is wjz tv. wjz hd and wjz.com, baltimore. from the city, to the counties, to your neighborhood. now, it is complete coverage. it is wjz, maryland's news station. senseless shooting. a virginia tech police officer killed in a murder-suicide. >> tonight the school bin begins to heal for the second time. hello everybody. i am denise koch. and i am dick carter. >> we have new details about the college student who murdered an officer at virginia tech and then turned the gun on himself. but the motive behind the killings is still very much a mystery. danielle nottingham reports from campus where students gathered to grieve. >> reporter: hundreds gathered to pay respects to fallen

police officer deriek crouse who was killed in a shooting on campus thursday punch all i could think about was how bad i felt for the officer's family. >> reporter: crouse's family is stunned. >> you think someone is invincable, nothing is going to happen to them. this is just complete shock. >> reporter: police say ross ashley shot officer crouse in his patrol car then fled. he ultimately took his own life about half mile away. police believe ashley acted alone. what they can't figure out is why. >> this is very much the fundamental part of the investigation right now. >> reporter: students created a space for officer crouse next to the memorial for the 2007 shooting victims. a fund has been set up for his family. the university counseling center has been open all day for students who want to talk. students were informed almost immediately about thursday's shooting. >> there are so many rumors going around. the university did a great job telling us the facts.

>> reporter: friday's vigil was also a rallying call for this rattled community. >> everyone still comes together. and we're going to prevail. >> reporter: a funeral service for officer crouse is set for monday afternoon at virginia tech's castle coliseum. in blacksburg, virginia, danielle nottingham, wjz, eyewitness news. in the past 24 hours have been a roller coaster for students at virginia tech including lindsay tankersly from parkton, baltimore county. a freshman, she has been on campus just three months. she tells wjz about her emotions. >> makes me really angry that someone would come on our campus and give us that name again. give us the name that our campus is unsafe, and it is just sad that we have gotten name for this but it is not like that here. it is really safe. i cannot imagine having to put my life for other people that you don't even know, like he gave his life for us. >> reporter: and stay with wjz for complete coverage of the

shooting at virginia tech. for updates any time, log on to wjz.com. students at the university here in baltimore are trying to cope with a tragedy of their own. a university student was found murdered in his off campus apartment. wjz is live in charles village. alex demetrick has the story. >> reporter: the murdered student was a senior business major at morgan. why he was killed is unknown as is his killer. >> a friend found 22-year-old brandon hudson thursday night shot in the head on his couch. he was in his senior year at morgan state university. word quickly spread among students that one of their own had been murdered. >> i do think it is sad because college is supposed to be place where we're supposed to come to get ahead in life and not become a statistic. >> you expect to be somewhere where they -- where they protect you. but i guess when you're off campus, it is really like off campus. >> brandon hudson did live off campus in charles village. police say there was no sign of a break-in or a struggle in his

apartment. motive and murderer remain unknown. >> detectives are growing frustrated and we will like the public's help in determining who is responsible for this. >> reporter: this fall has seen a number of violent crimes in charles village. hudson's murder comes after an attempted rape on love grove street. a shooting on st. paul and a double shooting on east 22nd street. >> there is a lot of violence that goes on and i mean, something needs to be done about it. and my prayers go out to the family. >> students obviously grieving and the morgan community is grieving. we just want everyone to know we want his family to know that his morgan family is standing with them. >> reporter: brandon hudson came to morgan from his home in clinton. >> police are urging you to call if you saw anything at all suspicious on thursday. a year and day. that's how long the wife of a former prince georges county executive will spend in prison. leslie johnson was sentenced today for trying to cover up

her husband's corruption. hellgren was in the courtroom. >> reporter: she rushed into court and left with a yond one year-one day prison sentence all for hiding hundreds of thousands of dollars, her husband former executive jack johnson extorted from developers. >> oh, okay, okay. thank you. >> reporter: here he is taking a bribe on camera. the case against mrs. johnson was largely based on this wiretap made has the fbi raided her home. >> what do you want me to do with this money? they are banging? what do you want me to do? >> put it in your panties and walk out of the house. >> johnson told the judge i am extremely sorry and ashamed of my conduct. i take full responsibility for my actions on that day. dy not know anything about the -- i did not know anything about the criminal conduct my husband engaged in. the judge did not buy that saying are you not an innocent spouse. are you a complicity spouse. you helped him conceal it. >> i felt as though she should

not have received any jail time. they have lost so much. >> one day at a time, it will be over, and we will all be better for it. >> reporter: she stayed on the county council after leading guilty. prosecutors say she only ran for office to continue her husband's culture of corruption and that he funded her campaign with his dirty money. >> in government there are many opportunities for corruption. if the wrong people wind up in positions where they are able to exercise discretion. >> reporter: the judge also ordered she perform 240 hours of hands-on community service once she gets out. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. now leslie johnson must report to prison in march. she asked that she serve her sentence at alderson in west virginia. her husband will serve his sentence at the buttner prison complex in north carolina. tonight there is growing scrutiny about jerry sandusky's sexual abuse of young boys and how much his wife knew about the attacks.

but his lawyers say the damage to their family is already done. >> we have nowhere to go, folks but up because public opinion convicted jerry on november 5th. >> the former penn state assistant coach is on house arrest. he returns to court tuesday to face 50 counts of child sexual abuse. several accusers are expected to testify. dottie sandusky says all the accusations are false. renewed hope about the faith of a retired fbi agent held hostage in iran. after four years of no news, his family had nearly given up. but tonight, they share the only clue that bob levinson could be alive. this video shows robert levinson a retired fbi agent who disappeared inside iran. >> i have been treated well. i need the help of the united states government to answer the requests of the group that has held me for three-and-a-half years. >> reporter: his family is releasing the tape it received

last november and levinson's son david is sending his own video message to his father's captors. >> we need to know what you want our family to do so that my father can come home safely. >> reporter: the 63-year-old father of seven went missing nearly five years ago. he was working as a private investigator when he traveled to iran. the u.s. government 'believed iranian intelligence officials picked him up but they never had solid intelligence on where he was. >> we have been sharing relevant information that we have about his case with many governments to see what we can do. >> reporter: iran's government denies it had anything to do with lech audits disappearance. his family hopes the video message will reach his captors and increase pressure on the diplomatic effort to bring him him home. >> they believe he may have been moved to pakistan or afghanistan. no deal. the university of maryland college park and the university of maryland baltimore will not merge. the college park campus has more than 37,000 students. the baltimore campus more than

6,000 they are the state's largest research campuses. bringing in $1 billion a year in research funding. the board of regents voted against the merger calling for an alliance instead. navy mid shipmen are on the run because tomorrow is the army-navy rival football game. right now. police in queens are hoping this surveillance video will help them catch a serial rapist. it show man's grabbing a woman in front of a house. she told police he put a sharp object in her back and tried to rape her in an alley. the suspect is wanted for two rapes since october. the attacks all occurred in the same neighborhood. it looked like a movie scene but it was a police involved shooting in the heart of hollywood. it happened at the famous intersection of hollywood and vine. the gunman started randomly firing at cars and then pulled a knife and approached an officer who shot and killed him. witnesses describe the start of the rampage. >> i was like dude they are shooting at us. i turned around to see somebody pointing a gun at me and my friends i'm like oh crap. we run behind here and hide behind the tahoe or whatever. >> police say between 9 and 12 shots were fired and the gunman was yelling, quote, i want to get killed, unquote. one person was shot inside his car. his condition is unknown.

a jury in connecticut sentences man to death for his part in a brutal home invasion and triple murder. in 2007 joshua komarjevsky and a an accomplice come dr. william petit's wife and two daughters. the other attacker stephen hays was convicted last year and is also on death row. this case led to a defeat of a build that would have outlawed the death penalty in connecticut. charging documents revealed graphic details about alleged swallow encounters between a married teacher and several young girls. parents are outraged after the teacher was released on bail. we have the accusations from anne arundel county. >> jeffrey sears, jr., posted a $150,000 bail friday. reduced from the original $3 million. on charges that have shaken the glen burnie high school community. >> angry, disgusted. really don't want her to be

here. >> i think it is gros. really gros. >> sears a english teacher and basketball coach is accused of sexually abusing at least three female students between 15 and 16 years old. one 16 yield said she performed oral sex on sears in his classroom. they exchanged naked photos seedia text and he sent her a video of him masturbating. >> it is unbelievable. you wouldn't think they would do that in classroom and not get caught by somebody. >> reporter: another victim told police when she was a freshman and a manager for the basketball team, sears took her to a stairwell at school to touch her with his finger. >> i think it is appalling. it makes me scared for them going there. >> reporter: and as late as october of this year, one victim says she also performed fellatio on sears in his classroom and had sex with him twice in his car and in an alply behind her house and also in his bedroom on the 400 block of luther road. >> this is a time for glen

burnie high school to heal and move forward and be concerned about our students and certainly the victims in this situation. >> reporter: sears will have a predisciplinary hearing. then the superintendent will recommend he be suspended without pay. sears faces a list of charges including various sex offenses. a woman in oklahoma is arrested for trying to make methamphetamine while inside a wal-mart. police say elizabeth half moon shoplifted the ingredients and was in the store for six hours mixing them. they say she was taken into custody just before the cooking process began. one officer did suffer minor burns when the chemicals splashed on his hands. half moon was arrested last month in a sting. in our health watch, major warning. if you enjoy eating raw cookie dough, according to a study it is not a harmless indulgence.

region. 35 west winds now at 3. very light. humidity is up to 85%. the barometer is way back up. 34 -- we're at 35. but very light winds. still kind of warm in the south. 49, 48. d.c. down to 41. dew point is 41. probably get down to the upper 20s tonight but there will be a west wind kicking in. locally, mid 30s to the low 40s. right now our winds just beginning to turn out to the west. they have already made that turn. another air mass will move in over the weekend. it will be chillier than today. we actually end up at 52. tomorrow we will be lucky to get to a low of 40. it will feel pretty chilly. that front moving through portions of new england, a few light snowshowers up there. just a few clouds. the front coming through pretty dry. a couple of sprinkles and wet snow flakes in the northwest pennsylvania. but the front has very little moisture with it as you can see. most of it is completely disappeared. we do have some clouds.

actually the front is going through western mellon. in a few hours will pass our region. winds out to the west-northwest and that's when the next cooler dry air mass moves in. for all weekend, we're talking colder temperatures but a lot of bright sunshine. now, the same high pressure brings us the cold weekend will slide off the coast and right behind it there comes a nice milder air trend for monday, tuesday and wednesday of next week. we get back above normal. couple of chilly days this weekend but sunny for all the football games going on. sunshine tomorrow, low 40s, same thing on sunday. but bright sunshine all weekend long. northwest winds today at 10 to 15. small craft advisory out there tomorrow. the bay temp around 49 degrees. sunrise 7:15. set at 4:44. tonight looking for general clear, partly cloudy skies. 28 degrees by morning. warmer in the city. 42 degrees tomorrow. so 10 degrees colder than it was this afternoon.
