2009 the cardiologist found himself under federal investigation. since then more than 200 patients have filed lawsuits, and he lost his medical license. but he is appealing telling the sun -- >> he was forced to end his cardiology practice at st. joseph medical center after a review of his case revealed stents were placed in some patients without seriously blocked arteries. he claims the assessment of blocked arteries is subjective telling the sun -- >> although he maintains his innocence, he says public doubt has been personally difficult. >> it's been extreme challenge to get through each and every day. just one day at a time. >> he has filed an appeal in circuit court, trying to get

his medical license back. a missing maryland woman is discovered dead. the remains of brittany peart were found a week ago. she was 21 when she disappeared three years ago. the cause of her death is still being determined. police have investigating a homicide tonight. police were called to the 2500 block of violent avenue just before 10:00 this morning. they found an unidentified elderly man unresponsive. the victim was 58 years old and pronounced dead at the scene. police have not said how he died. police make an arrest in a series of goodwill robberies. the suspect turns out is a former employee at the store. wjz is live on the story tonight. >> reporter: police say this was a very high priority case for them because the suspect was so brazenly whipping out a gun at the stores and they thought he would do it again. but tonight he is behind bars.

shoppers at baltimore county goodwill stores have been on edge since a string every armed robberies started up last month. >> i come here and shop, get my clothes here and even donate here at times. and i was reluctant to do it. definitely didn't want to step in there. >> now comes relief after police charge 29-year-old richard petaway with five counts of armed robbery and handgun charges. he's a former employee of the store on 200 west road robbed twice. >> it makes it to me worse than if it was from desperate stranger off the street because he took advantage of the situation. >> this frequent shopper got caught up in it chaos. >> when he pulled up, the police were everywhere. they had the van there, and the cops were out. >> police say he would use the same plan of attack in each robbery. >> he would walk into the store, display a handgun, and would make the customers and employees walk into a back office of the goodwill store,

lock them inside the store and then take the money from the store. >> police say he also robbed a store on east shopper road on three separate occasions. court records revealed he has plenty of criminal experience. he has been charged multiple times with armed robbery theft, drug possession and assault. many are baffled anyone would do harm to a place that does so much good. >> that's like going to a church and robbing a church. i mean, who does that? that's stupid. >> and investigators say they're looking into the possibility he was acting on a venge for something but they also say may have just targeted goodwill because he was so familiar with them. no motive has been confirmed. >> that's a long criminal record. thank you. he is held tonight at the baltimore county detention center without bail. a vigil lights up the campus of virginia tech two dates after the gunman's deadly rampage. hundreds of students and police

gathered to honor officer derek crouse. hess shot and killed thursday and his patrol car on campus. police say the gunman, 22-year- old ross ashley, ultimately took his own life. just four years ago a gunman killed 32 people on the same campus. a heated campaign showdown, g.o.p. candidates vying for the presidential nomination go led to head in iowa and it gets hot at times. >> reporter: new g.o.p. front-runner newt gingrich took punches early and often, especially from his closest rival, mitt romney. >> the real difference i believe is our backgrounds. i spent my life in the private sector. i understand how the economy works. >> the only reason you didn't become a career politics is you lost to teddy kennedy in 1994. >> if i would have been able to get in the nfl like i hoped when i was a kid, i would have been a football star all my life. >> meanwhile, the rest of the candidates tried to use the abc news iowa debate to try to take down both men.

half weeks away. a abducted teenager is free after being held hostage five months overseas. 14-year-old kevin hundredsman was abducted with his mother and cousin in the philippines back in july. police believe they were kidnapped by muslim militants. his mother and his cousin were freed several months ago. the neighbors say they feared for the family, even before the trip. >> he did not want to go. he told us he just -- he feared going. to me, common sense would say if they're having to march around your house at night while you sleep, then somebody knows that it's dangerous. >> the family is believed to have been taken by militants from the islamic group but no one claimed responsibility. evening the odds on the chance that fewer guns could mean fewer shootings at baltimore churches, now paying people to turn in their guns. tonight pat warren reports that that one small effort could be saving some lives.

>> reporter: north gilmore street is home to elizabeth carter for 30 years, and has seen the neighborhood chains. but in recent years she has come to feel her street is much safer thanks in part to the church next door. >> that's a wonderful thing, that fatherrer is doing. >> it's gun turn-in day at the church. they offer rewards up to $100 for weapons, no questions asked. >> okay. you're welcome. >> that was eye call about a gun. she had the gun, shelves a little leery about how to get it here. >> the payments are made for guns that in working conditions. >> they thought appropriate with violence, especially, and disregard for human life that this would be appropriate time. >> at her inauguration this weir, the mayor emphasized the need for just this kind of community involvement. >> everyone has responsibility in the home, at church, in our neighborhoods. >> north gilmore and st. gregory take those responsibilities seriously. >> we have a lot of homeowners

no classes why in session when the plane hit, but investigators say at least 13 people were killed including two children. 10 others are in the hospital, five with major burns. a radio report shows the pilot requested an emergency landing shortly after takeoff, but then crashed before he was able to return to the airport. it's an emotional day in georgia as hundreds gathered to mourn the death of a 7-year- old. the body was found early this week, authorities believer the little girl was raped, stabbed and then beaten to death. she was last seen walking to her apartment from a playground. a maintenance worker at the complex has been charge with her murder. two former basketball players are accusing ex-amateur president bobby dodd of molestation. the claims date back to the 1980s. the players in their 40s say the penn state sex abuse case prompted them to confront dodd

in november. directors in the community where dodd once coached say they're shocked. >> they come at us for protection and trust, and once you violate that, as an authority figure, i mean, it's -- you know, doesn't sit right with me. >> the memphis police are locking into the allegations. dodd has colon cancer and will not return to his position. occupy protestors have been evicted in business ton. 46 people arrested today as police dismantled the occupy boston camp. mayor menino set a date to remove the camp saying it was a public health and safety hazard. it took crews about an hour to clean it up, and take away all the tents. demonstrators were forcibly removed from similar sites, and new york city, los angeles, and philadelphia and san francisco. across the world more than a half million people have been able to buy homes thanks to habitat for humanity. and now the baltimore affiliate of that organization has reached a milestone of its own.

>> reporter: yet again, the sound of progress in sand town winchester. for the 300th time, habitat for humanity has opened the door to homeownership. >> this is my favorite one here. >> at 37, inger walker has never owned a home, only began working regularly six years ago, but heard about habitat, applied and now she gets their 300th home renovated in baltimore. a rotten shell was gutted, now everything is new. >> i pass the house every day and look at it. >> what did you say to yourself? >> i can't wait to move in! >> her dream come true is built on 22 years of hard work by habitat and its volunteers. those two. >> those two are out. if you go down by the blue door, that's ours too. >> laverne was one of original habitat owners. she is now the co-executive director. >> and people here knew what they needed. they just never had the opportunity. once you provide the

a low-pressure system and the front moved well offshore, and throughout this day it started off through the morning right on through the day and now all the precipitation, all the clouds associated with it, well offshore. but you can see by the lake- effect snow right up around the great lakes and even the northern portions of pennsylvania, very cold air is in place up to our north. so as this high pressure continues to move and the clockwise flow around it continues to move into the mid- atlantic, we're tapping into the cold air. as the high moves off, the same flow will allow for milder air to move in from the south and southwest. our temperatures will go from below average to above average, over the next few days. so this is how it shapes up with your sunrise at 7:16 tomorrow morning. there's an east wind with no advisories on the bay at 5 not. down tonight to a chilly 24 degrees. clear and cold. we'll call it just below average highs tomorrow a full day of sunshine, 42 degrees. then if you're going to the ravens game, kickoff temperature 40 degrees, sunny
