hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. kai is off today. here's what people are talking about today. breaking news. we have big problems on the beltway that may affect your ride home. captain mike perry is live over sky eye chopper 13, over 95 and 695 where a truck has struck an overpass. >> indeed, mary. about 1:30 this afternoon, a tractor-trailer, carrying a large excavator on the back of a trailer, struck an overhead bridge. now, this occurred on the outer loop of 695, on i-95 southbound, on the southwest side of the beltway. it occurred around 1:30 this afternoon. the boom on that excavator struck a sign on the front side of this bridge, and then struck one of the bridge beams underneath of the bridge, causing damage to both the sign and the girder.

the state highway administration has completely closed as bill is showing you there, three lanes of the outer loop of 695, on the southwest side. only one lane is getting by at this time. they have also closed one lane of southbound i-95, as the overpass that goes over top of 695 for state highway officials to continue work on the bridge and the sign. now, they are in the process of repairing the sign. we do know that bridge inspectors are on the scene, looking at the girder. they have deemed it safe for travel. we have highway traffic running over it at this time. southbound 95, but day tuned throughout the afternoon and evening drive time. it's causing a mess of delays. and our traffic reporter will keep you updated. complete coverage continues with kristy breslin with with more on these backups. >> well, as captain mike had told you, the three right lanes are blocked. the delay right now is back to wilkens avenue. it's definitely going to

stretch. right now, you're looking at about 20 minutes to get through. you're also going to see it affecting the inner loop as well. right now, the inner loop is slow from 70 to liberty road. so the best case scenario would be to avoid the outer loop at this time because we only expect the delays to get larger. but we'll definitely keep you up-to-date as the newscast progresses. jerry sandusky is preparing to be in the same room with the men accused -- accusing him of sexual abuse. as anna werner reports, a new report discusses the accuracy. the preliminary hearing will be the public's first chance to hear some of the young men who claim sandusky sexually abused them. and his lawyer, joe amadola says ? >> well, he's dreading it. as you can imagine, he's going to have to sit in a courtroom, with a couple hundred people, i

understand it's going to be filled to capacity, including members of his family and friends, who are going to listen to some of these young men say horrific things occurred between them and jerry. >> reporter: and cbs news has learned that a key prosecution witness is also scheduled to testify. mike mcqueary. mcqueary is the former penn state assistant coach, who told a grand jury that in 2002, he saw jerry sandusky in a locker room shower on the penn state campus, sexually assaulting a young boy. according to the grand jury report, he says he saw a boy he estimated to be 10 years old, with his hands up against the wall, being raped by a naked sandusky. but a local newspaper report sunday raised new questions about whether mcqueary may have told a different story back then. the harrisburg patriot news, quoting a source, says that after the incident, mcqueary went to his father's home, where a family friend, dr. jonathan droning on was

present. he said at this time, mcqueary heard sex sounds, saw a young boy stick his head around the corner and an adult arm reached around and pulled the boy back. he said he asked mcqueary several times if he saw anything sexual. and several times, mcqueary said no. at dronoff's home sunday, a woman declined to comment. >> not opening the door. this is my house. goodbye. >> reporter: mcqueary also declined to speak. >> sandusky will not testify tomorrow. and no cameras are allowed in the courtroom. former penn state coach joe paterno is hospitalized after a fall at his home. paterno fractured his pelvis for the second time this year. he is not expected to need knee surgery. paterno, who is expected to turn 85 this month, is also expected to undergo chemo and radiation.

he survived iraq only to lose his life at virginia tech. today, a police officer shot and killed in the line of duty is laid to rest. adam is live in the newsroom with more on today's services. >> the funeral services were held a shoulder time ago. virginia governor bob macdonald, and morgan griffith attended today's ceremonies. police officers from up and down the east coast were also on hand. it is also still unclear why 22- year-old russ ashley shot officer kraus and took his -- life last week. he leaves behind a wife and five children. mary, back to you. >> all right, adam, thank you. city police officers shoot a man several times after they say he refused to drop a knife. mike hellgren has new details on what led to the violent confrontation. >> police are not identifying the officer who fired the shots, the man who was hit survived, and was in critical but stable condition at last check. an investigation is under way at this hour, after police shot

a man on south morly street late last night, who they say became unruly and argumentive, and they say he was armed. . >> this individual had a knife. he began to advance police officers with that knife, after numerous commands. police officers asked the suspect to drop that knife. he did not comply and was shot numerous times. >> reporter: police have not said exactly how many times the 38-year-old man was shot. he was taken to the hospital. his sister told wjz's news partner that her brother is schizophrenic but has not been violent in the past. >> homicide is on the scene and is investigating, which is customary. >> reporter: police say the confrontation happened in an upstairs bedroom. in southwest baltimore, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> and all new at 5:00, we'll tell you what flashes and family are saying about the continuing investigation. tense moments today at the campus of towson university, just after 10:30 this morning,

students received a text message that there was a robbery at the pnc bank. the man demanded money but did not show a weapon. a baltimore county police officer, though, arrested the suspect in front of the liberal arts building. all of the money was recovered. protestors at the ports today. the occupy wall street movement shifts its target, hoping to disrupt shipping business in and out of the u.s. bigad shaban reports from long beach, california. >> reporter: a line of blue faced off geashes pro-- against protestors at the long beach cargo port in southern california. it's the latest tactic in the occupy wall street movement. a tactic to block ports along the west coast, from long beach to california. demonstrators claim the ports have become economic engines for the elite 1%. >> we think this is about labor across the board, about outsourcing jobs, about

dignified jobs. >> blocked briefly by protestors. semi trucks were forced to navigate long lines in the pouring rain. >> the long beach port is the second busiest in the u.s. it generates billions of dollars each year and supports over a million jobs. and the union that represents dock workers here says it doesn't support attempts to shut it down. >> but protest oshes say with or without that support, their movement will gather strength. >> all that is happening is those occupies will come back with more and more people. >> reporter: in oakland, hundreds picketed the port. blocking trucks from entering the terminal. port officials say operations supply 73,000 jobs in their region. and that a blockade hurts the community. >> these are good jobs, held by real working people, and real working families. disrupting the port hurts them. >> reporter: here in long beach, police drove back the protestors. and support -- the ports

visit redcross.org today. trouble on the beltway and other issues. let's check in with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. busy afternoon out there, kristy. >> quite a start, mary. absolutely. if you're traveling on the outer loop, we do have a problem at washington boulevard. there's three right lanes that are blocked. there is also damage to the bridge from the truck that was trying to go through it. right now, the delay is all the way back to reisterstown road. as far as the inner loop goes, it's not affecting it as badly. but you still will see some slowing there from 70 to liberty road.

right now, the outer loop delay we're expecting to see about 30 minutes. the loop -- inner loop, only about 15 there. if you're traveling on the north side inner loop, delays there from york road to charms street. -- charles street. northbound 95, also heavy in that direction. that's from whitemarsh boulevard. beltway to whitemarsh boulevard. in harford county, we have an accident there at the hickory bypass. a fuel spill as well. that is going to catch your eye. garrison boulevard at gwen falls parkway. and a third accident we're watching in the city. hillen road at cold spring. you can see a little good news for us there. 895 at potee street. this is brought to you by papa john's. don't forget about the ravens topping for touchdown. mondays, following the game. back to you. >> kristy, thank you. a music executive clings to

life in hollywood, after being shot at random by a gunman in the street. 43-year-old john outerbury were shot in the face and chest, as he drove his mercedes through friday morning. police shot and killed 26-year- old tyler bren, who fired at least 20 shots from the 40- caliber handgun. the motive for the rampage is still unclear. in tonight's wjz healthwatch, the biggest study of its kind on ritalin and the affects on the heart. the new review of more than 440,000 adults finds the central nervous system drug does not cause heart attacks or strokes. this echoes a similar study at children's, published by the same authors last year. the research appears in the journal of the medical association. the governor's trip to india brought back big souvenirs. brought back millions of dollars in maryland firms. it's a foreign market that has been rapidly growing and shows

>> wind. >> right. >> that's the kicker. but this afternoon, we got up to normal temperatures. 46. that is smack dab where it's supposed to be. let's take a look at temps now. that hasn't dropped a whole lot. 44 now, with no wind to speak of. the barometer is still pretty high. 30.05 inches. and that's one of the reasons we had a cold night. clear skies. big area, big dome of high pressure over us. dew points light winds. and that's pretty indicative of the temperatures once again tonight. it will drop to where the dew point is, pretty much. in other words, the humidity comes up to near 40%. you get frost or fog in some areas. but this morning, it was in the 20s most places. no wind, the barometer. still high. it's going to continue to set there for a little while. 46 in ocean city now. 36 in oakland. dew point once again. the mid-20s. 44 up in washington. 44 over in easton. 43, rock hall. and kent island, annapolis, coming in at 44 as well.

no wind here at the time being. but we did have a southerly, slight southerly flow. in fact, there's pretty mild air and moisture overnight. that's moving offshore. we've got high pressure pretty much sunshine. but there are a few clouds. you can see them in the sunset tonight. these are high clouds, not rain- producing clouds. all of the rain today is in the southwest. for us, these high clouds moving off tonight. another clear night. it will be chilly tonight. tomorrow looks like a sunny day. and then the high pressure over us with the cool air is going to once again move off the east coast. and what that means is, our winds go back to the southwest generally. mild air coming in. the really cold stuff way up to the north. our chances of having a white christmas this year in the east are very, very slim at this point to none. unless something changes dramatically, we're not going to see it. sorry about that. northwest winds, 5 to 10. but kids, santa claus has ways of getting in and out.

it is 4:30. 44 degrees and mostly clear. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. we have an update on breaking news. captain mike perry is live in sky eye chopper 13. mike? >> yes. we told you about it a little earlier, vic. around 1:30 this afternoon, this piece of heavy equipment on the back of a tractor- trailer struck an overpass. this occurred at the outer loop of 695. at southbound i-95 on the southwest side of the beltway. now, since that time, since about 1:30 this afternoon, state highway officials have closed three lanes of the outer loop of the beltway, at southbound 95, as they were assessing damage to this bridge. this is the overpass right here at southbound 95. it struck a very large sign on

the front of this structure and then a beam underneath of the bridge. now, they've closed the right- hand lane of southbound i-95 also. this is just to help workers assess the damage to the bridge. apparently the integrity of the bridge is okay. and they are allowing vehicles to run on it. there were no injuries as a result of this accident. but it's caused major delays to traffic, especially along the outer loop of the beltway, coming from the liberty road area, over to the southwest side of the beltway. the delay now extends well back beyond liberty road. and you can expect major delays throughout the evening drive time. we'll keep you updated as well. we will stay on top of this story. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you very much. captain mike perry, in sky eye chopper 13. how are these lane closures affecting the ride home in radio -- home? i bet they are. >> hi, denise. hi, everyone. definitely a lot of congestion out there, as captain mike had told you on the outer loop, it does extend well past liberty

road. you're looking at, at least 25 minutes, traffic just crawling along at this point. and we do expect those delays to get longer. as far as the inner loops go, not bad in that direction. you will see a slowdown on the inner loop from 70 to liberty. but the best-case scenario, avoid the outer loop on the southwest side at 95. that will get you out of quite a long delay. and we'll keep you up-to-date as the newscast goes on. >> suspensions, after a huge brawl breaks out during a college basketball game. as cynthia bowers explains, tensions were running high at a rival game in cincinnati. >> reporter: it's called the cross twoin shootout. and with the schools less than four miles apart, the losers of the annual rival game is reminded daily. >> this year, it's going to be a lopsided win for xavier. >> reporter: then, with nine seconds left, the game took an ugly turn. you can see xavier's star,

bases and moving equipment across the border to kuwait. at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> there are now about 6,000 left inside iraq. and the president says they will all be home by new year's day. a severna park man learns his fate for scamming thousands of dollars from the 9/11 victim's fund. mary is in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: originally dubbed a hero after the september 11th attacks. charles coughlin is now facing prison. a judge sentenced the retired navy commander to 3 1/2 years behind bars. coughlin said he suffered a debillitating neck injury in 2001. but prosecutors say that was a lie. and coughlin used an old injury to get more than $35,000 from the fund. coughlin remains free pending appeal. >> coughlin addressed the court, saying he takes full responsibility for his mistakes. republican presidential

front runner newt gingrich is take the lead today. he is still behind mitt mitt romney in the granite state. >> i said up front openly, i've made mistakes at times, i've had to go to god for forgiveness, i've had to seek reconciliation. but i'm also a 68-year-old grandfather. and i think people have to measure who i am now. >> reporter: texas governor rick perry took the opportunity to take a not-so-subtle shot at king rich. >> if you will cheat on your wife or your spouse, then why wouldn't you beat on -- cheat on your business partner. >> reporter: we know -- >> we know that he has taken over $100 million. his offices are on the rodeo drive of washington, called "k" street. he's the king of k street. >> reporter: but when it comes to issues, congresswoman michele bachmann says there is

19 up to the west and north. dulles airport, 19. and also, around 19. 24 in ocean city. now, by the end of this week, believe it or not, we've got more mild air headed our way. maybe a little rain on thursday. but the cold air stays north of that jet stream. basically, the northern plains and the great lakes. that's where it's going to be cold. for the rest of the country, dry for the most part, and mild temperatures, heading down to florida, it will be near 70s and 80s down there. i'll have a look at our forecast coming up. >> first lady michelle obama can now add world record holder to her list. october held the most people doing jumping jacks. she and about 400 children took part outside the white house. but thousands more join in, in events all over the world. in all, more than 300,000 people participated. >> all right. >> fun.

we were telling you all afternoon that there is trouble on the beltway. kristy breslin is at wjz traffic control. not a good situation at all on the outer loop of the beltway, at the 95 southbound bridge overpass. as you can see, we did have a truck strike the bridge. and right now, the three right- hand lanes are blocked. the delay is well past liberty road. you're looking at, at least 25 minutes to get through. as far as the inner loop goes, you'll also see a delay in that direction.

we're looking at about 20 minutes from 70 to liberty road. if you can avoid that part of the beltway at this hour, that would definitely be your best bet. over on the north side outer loop, heavy there to charles street. another 20 minutes to get through. and 95 northbound, also seeing some brake lights there, from pulaski highway to the beltway. as far as accidents go, route 1 at the hickory bypass, that's in the bel air area. whitemarsh at walther boulevard. and also north milton at main street. let's take a look live. that's just part of the delay there this traffic report is brought to you by bill's bill's carpet, hardwood and laminate, too. back to you. there are new photos coming out of beijing, china. for the first time, the world has seen pictures of women on death row. these photos shocked many across china. women in their final 12 hours

on death row. taken in china's central wuhan province in 2003, few saw these images until now. as they spread across china's internet, showing convicted drug traffickers, preparing for death. >> it's incredibly rare to see inside of any of china's prisons, even more rare to see someone on death row. the number of executions carried out every year, considered a state secret. >> reporter: this prisoner receives a new outfit and carefully folds it to wear for her execution. the women are fed fresh fruit, dumplings and a special treat, hot pies from mcdonald's. this 25-year-old convict laughs often, but eventually sings to heaven, asking for a second chance. another woman stays in her cell, dictating one last letter. when dawn breaks, it's time to wear those final outfits. tears flow. outside tallies estimate china

carries around 4,000 death sentences annually, from crimes raging -- ranging from government corruption to rate. in comparison, 46 people were executed in the united states last year. they are fueling online debates, but it's the weakest and poorest in china who face the harshest punishment. >> in a very densely populated country, with deep familial and kinship ties. you're executing that many people every year, you are generating a lot of discontent. a lot of unhappiness. >> reporter: for these women, the debate comes too late. they come to face the firing squad. celia hatton, wjz eyewitness news, beijing. >> as she said, it is fueling online debates that it is the poorest, weakest people who face the punishment. manuel noriega is coming home.
