hi, everybody. i'm miry bubala -- mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. we begin with breaking news out of baltimore, where a teenager is hit and killed by a car. captain mike perry is over the scene. >> reporter: hello. very sad scene here, kai. this occurred around 2:45 this afternoon. at harford -- correction, it would be putty hill road at wilson road. baltimore county police, called to the scene of the accident, with pedestrian struck. when police arrived, the 15- year-old male was found in the middle of putty hill road, apparently dead on arrival. police said that at least two vehicles struck the teen. one vehicle striking the teen, knocking it into the path of another vehicle. now, baltimore county police have completely closed putty hill avenue from harford road

to wilson avenue. and they are conducting detours and investigation at the scene. it is unclear at this point how long putty hill road will be closed. but as you can see, police have some work ahead of them, a very sad scene. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, captain mike perry, reporting live. stay with eyewitness news at 5:00 and 6:00 for the very latest on this breaking story. the troaferlt mission in-- controversial mission in iraq is over. nine years after the u.s.-led war in iraq officially ends, tara mergener reports for wjz, some u.s. have mixed feelings about the end of the war in iraq. >> they have come to a solemn end. soldiers rolled up the flags u.s. forces flew during the military campaign and put it into a sheath. it's headed back to the united states, a symbol of the nearly nine-year war that killed 4500 americans and injured more than 30,000 others.

defense secretary leon pineta was in baghdad for the ceremony. he paid tribute to america's fighting forces. >> your nation is deeply indebted to you. you have done everything your nation asked you to do and more. >> president obama has said u.s. troops will be home by christmas. but commanders say thousands of them will have to stay in kuwait for a few more months. >> reporter: about 4,000 forces remain inside iraq. they're packing up the last two u.s. bases there. some have mixed feelings about leaving. they're happy to head home, but concerned about iraq's future. >> i really do hope the best for the iraqi people. this has been really hard. >> many iraqis are glad to see the american forces go. this man says, the u.s. has only seen division and sectarianism. others are optimistic about their future, say saying

they're confident that iraqi police and military can protect their country from terrorism. at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> at the height of the war, there were more than 170,000 u.s. troops in iraq. a police pursuit starts in anne arundel county and end with gunfire in baltimore county. vic is in the newsroom with more on the shooting and the reason for that chase. vic? >> well, kai. it started just after 11:00 this morning. police spotted a vehicle wanted in an armed robbery. it happened this afternoon. officers pursued the suspect through anne arundel county and baltimore city. the chase ended when the suspect vehicle struck a police cruiser in baltimore county. the suspect threw down a handgun and tried to pick it back up. that's when two officers fired their guns, hitting the suspect. the 19-year-old suspects suffered gunshot wounds to the lower body. he is being treated at shock trauma. kai, back to you. >> we'll have much more on this chase and shooting, coming up at 5:00 and 6:00.

justice for their son. two parents are suing the baltimore city school district. they say their 10-year-old son was constantly bullied at school. mike hellgren has more on the trial beginning today downtown. >> the jury selection process got under way this morning. this is significant because it's one of the few bullying cases to actually go to trial. >> reporter: shauna and eddie sullivan filed suit against baltimore city schools, after they say bullies terrorized their son sean, a 10-year-old special needs child, and not enough was done to stop the violence. >> once you go through your chain of command, as far as you possibly can, if they refuse to do anything about it, then have you to go outside of that. and yeah, unfortunately, out to involve the court system. >> reporter: in one incident in hazelwood elementary, they say the bullies choked sean. >> somebody had actually picked him up and carried him into the school because he was still conscious while entering the school. >> it's even more scary when the people that are supposed to

be protecting children aren't doing anything to stop it. >> reporter: they transferred them but say the relentless bullying didn't stop there. >> there were days he would just sit and rock and cry in his room, not knowing what to do because he must have done something. >> if there was the response from the faculty, then there wouldn't be as big of an issue. >> reporter: city schools declined to comment on the allegations. principals of both schools and the school board are named in the lawsuit. >> you can't just keep denying that it's happening and expect the problem to go away. children are actually being hurt. and sooner or later, somebody is going to seriously be hurt. >> reporter: the principals of the two baltimore city schools are in the courtroom, along with the child's parents. at courthouse east, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> the trial is expected to last four to five days. after a hard-fought battle today, governor martin o'malley finally throws his support behind exelon's proposed takeover of constellation

energy. the nearly $8 billion deal now includes more benefits for the state than originally proposed. exelon promises to sweeten the merger by promising to develop more gas, wind and solar power in the state. governor o'malley says it's a win-win deal. >> the renewable energy. and the effect that that has on our state and the waters of the bay. and the air we breathe, it's hard to put a price tag on that. >> the plan also gives more money to help low-income customers. the maryland public service commission must approve the deal. find out more about it, coming up all new at 5:00 and 6:00. new criminal charges filed today against prince george's county delegate, tiffany allston. today, a grand jury issued an indictment charging allston. allston is also facing charges she used thousands in campaign funds. delegate allston faces $10,000

in fines if convicted on all charges. turning to weather. the clouds are dropping some rain on some parts of central maryland now. outside, it remains mild, though. and a light drizzle is falling. wjz has weather and traffic together. we will talk with kristy in just a second. >> good morning -- good afternoon. [ laughter ] you know, all of these clouds. it just seems like the sun should be coming up or something, you know? but it's definitely a mild day. the rain has come through. and as you see, the front that is bringing it, responsible for it, is pretty much draped down the corridor. 72% humidity. winds to the south. despite the fact that we have not seen a ton of sun, we are still getting that flow from the south. we do still have some time before all the showers are clear. but for the most part, we are clear with the -- done with the bulk of the rain as it starts to move to the lower eastern shore and the delmarva. we're going to see some clearing, but we'll also see a change in our temperatures.

we'll have the complete updated forecasts. let's check in now on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. first, let's check in on that accident in the parkville area. that was in the putty hill area at wilson avenue. it was closed from harford to wilson. we're expecting the road to be closed throughout the evening. as far as other accidents go, we have one we're watching in the towson area. providence road, at goucher boulevard. police still on the scene for that one. another crash, northbound 97, that one at route 100. and a 30-minute delay on the west side outer loop, from 795 to baltimore national pike. if you're traveling on the west side inner loop, same situation there, another 30 minutes from the bw parkway to security boulevard. and the top side inner loop, also struggling in that direction, 35 minutes there from the jones falls expressway to 95. as far as 95 itself goes, no problems in the southbound direction. but northbound, you'll definitely see some brake

good, safe vehicles for that purpose. >> reporter: the award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting passengers in a variety of crashes, from the front, side, and rear, and in rollovers. >> one of the biggest reasons there are so many models on the new list is because cars' roofs are getting stronger. companies are redesigning their vehicles to better withstand rollovers. >> reporter: drivers say safety is important. >> if you get in an accident, you have to think about safety then. so you might as well think about it when you're buying the car. >> reporter: every major manufacturer has at least one vehicle on the list. but subaru is the only automaker that has a winner in every model it builds. toyota, which includes its lexus and scion brands, has 15 winners. general motors is next with 14. followed by volkswagen audi with 13. ford, lincoln and honda acura, have 12 awards each. several large pickup trucks are also included. but not one small pickup was considered safe enough to make

on an hour-long chase. >> i went in the house and said to my wife, you see the news van? where are they there. >> this is one of the most beautiful animals i've seen. and in the history. >> he's beautiful. he's the biggest grizzly bear i've ever seen. >> reporter: he was first spotted in this home by dave cornine, who was doing a repair job by cable vision when -- >> i heard the growl. >> turns out, a bear made a nice little nest for himself. it's unclear how long he had been living here. but he apparently wandered into the crawl space through an open door to hibernate. >> i think when i drilled the hole through the door, i probably woke him up. i turned around with my flashlight. threw my tools, ran out of the basement. >> reporter: officers with the department of fish and wildlife, came to tranquilize the fish and bear. but he took off, sparking an intense chase, that officers expected would last about 15 minutes and ended up lasting about an hour, as the bear took

multiple tranquilizer darts darts and kept going. when the bear finally went down, it took eight men to carry him out of the woods while bystanders watched him in amazement. officers tagged him and checked him for injuries. >> that was kathryn brown reporting. he just wanted to hibernate in that basement. animal control officers say the bear is in healthy condition and will it be released onto a state property, after he is given a medical exam. >> imagine stumbling on that bear. not a good outcome. see if it's a bear market today on wall street. the markets had the first positive day this week in fact. s&p up 4. nasdaq up 2. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. new sense us figures show the middle class is shrinking. nearly half of all americans are either living in poverty or scraping by on earnings that classify them as low-income.

a family of four is considered low income if they earn about $45,000 a year. the number of americans applying for unemployment benefits last week fell to a 3 1/2 year low. it is more evidence that layoffs are easing. chase is making its checking accounts easier to understand. the bank will start providing a three-page disclosure that helps consumers understand the terms of their basic accounts and fees. chase is the first major bank to adopt the consumer-friendly disclosure standards which were adopted by the pew institute. this saturday is expected to be the biggest shopping day of the holiday season after black friday. retailers expect consumer spending to pick up again as we enter the final stretch before christmas. and the deadline for shipping holiday packages is here. today is the last day to ship packages, parcel post, in order for them to arrive by christmas. tomorrow is the last day to ship at the lowest fedex rate. you can ship things out next week, but it will cost you more

of the 60-degree temperatures. but we're back into sunshine and blue skies for the weekend. not a bad tradeoff. >> if you have any last-minute shopping to do, the weather after tonight, after this rain goes by, is going to cooperate. right now, 58 degrees. we're down just 1 degree or so from our checkout. 49 is your dew point. relative humidity at 71%. south/southeasterly wind at seven miles per hour. that is bringing in the nice, mild air. we had a good mild air flow tapping in to the south. despite the fact that we have not had a ton of sunshine today. widely scattered showers have just kind of hindered us. but it almost has that spring- type, summertime feel out there. 55 in elkton. 54 in ocean city. and look at these temperatures. easton at 60. 66 down in southern maryland. down in patuxent river. mid- to upper 50s around the entire state. that front is pushing on through. and despite the fact that we're

now going to very quickly be on the cool side of this front, we are still high now in our temperatures, even knocking us back, still keeps us very mild for the evening ahead. we have the southeasterly wind. they have been ranging in the 20s in the area. but now, light breeze across the state. and the southeast wind now, capped by the clouds. we're going to keep the warmth locked in. clouds will be like a blanket. the warmth will stay with us, until the clouds start to break. now, you can see pretty much the straight line. that is the cold front that is moving across the region. the way this whole dynamic came through, warm front. then the low pressure that is driving all of it is up near canada. then we have a cold front dragging behind. cold front is kind of breaking up now. but the clouds are still in place. this is your forecast for tomorrow and into the weekend. cooler air will be in place. but you see, we dry out very nicely for saturday into sunday. temperatures will drop back down to about average, which is in the mid-40s. but we are going to definitely see a good bit of sunshine and clear skies.

looking for answers as it tries to write new laws and help a new generation of homeless. in new york, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> it's estimated the number of homeless children in the u.s. rose about 30% between 2007 and 2010. >> the italian appeals court that overturned the murder conviction of amanda knox, finally gives its reasons for the rulings. kai is in the newsroom with the latest. >> reporter: knox and her ex- boyfriend were originally convicted of killing her roommate. in october, an appeals court reversed that decision. in a report today, they detailed a number of things, including the lack. a -- lack of a murder weapon, faulty dna evidence. a third defendant in the case was found guilty in a separate trial. his conviction was upheld last year. denise? >> thank you, kai. >> after the 24-year-old was

freed, she returned home to seattle. a hazing investigation is turning up more alleged wrongdoing. as anna warner reports for wjz, this time, police are looking into a possible case of fraud. >> reporter: florida department of law enforcement, in a letter to florida a&m's president, said its investigation into the death of drum major robert champion, turned up new information about potential criminal violations, related to fraud by university employees. >> it was just a notification letter that went out, saying we are starting a second investigation. >> reporter: this marks the third investigation now under way into the school. on monday, tallahassee police charged three students in connection with the battery and hazing of a freshman clarinet player. her attorney, bj bernstein says the beating was so severe, the girl's thigh bone was broken. >> she was beaten by hands, fist, spatulas, metal rulers and book binders. >> reporter: bernstein says it was part of an initiation

ceremony for a secretive click called the red dog order. the group was formed by florida a&m marching band members from atlanta. in fact, students have told cbs news, they believe champion died after a red-dog order hazing ritual, called crossing bus c. >> but along the way, what happened? >> they're punching you. they're beating you. >> all the way through the back of the bus? >> all the way through the back of the bus. >> and do you think this is what happened to robert champion? >> do i think, if he was on bus c and that's where they found him? yes. >> reporter: florida wants someone suspended while the investigation continues. a college in vermont is wanted for a survey that appears to promote violence for women. >> reporter: that survey was handed out at the sigma phi epsilon. it asks members who they would rape if they could.

school officials report today over the weekend. the school is now investigating who is behind the survey, who saw it, and how it was used. the national sigma phi epsilon has instructed the chapter to stop, pending all investigations. >> campus police are now looking into whether any crimes were committed in connection with the survey. baltimore police are looking for the gunman who opened fire inside a barber shop. a man was shot in the 2200 block of parker road. he's now in the hospital, in critical condition. police believe this was a robbery attempt. but so far, there are no suspects. a demonstration is planned outside fort meade tomorrow, in support of the army private accused of sending classified documents to wikileaks. 24-year-old bradley manning will have a hearing. he was arrested last year, after wikileaks published the documents online. manning's supporters say it was illegally classified and he

should receive whistle-blower protection. if you're dreaming of a white christmas this year, you'll probably be a little disappointed. every year, they rate the chances of snow based on a 50- year average. the prediction for baltimore, only a 12% possibility for one inch or more. the biggest, pinkennotch, new hampshire. they have a 95% chance for snow. there was a little rain today in some spots. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is here first with the updated numbers from first warning weather. a little sunshine trying to come out. and it will clear out tonight. not cold enough for snow. take a look at radar. taking those very widely scattered rain showers with it. a little bigger picture, showing this front all up and down the east coast. a little batch of showers in pennsylvania. should not really impact the region, generally looking for partly cloudy skies tonight. later on, beginning of a cooler weekend now. look at these temperatures.

the chancellor of the university of california davis, says she never ordered campus police to use force or pepper spray on students last month. video footage of officers spraying pepper spray, as student protestors sat on the ground, has sparked outrage. today, the chancellor admits if she knew the police could not remove the protestors' tents peacefully, she would have left them there. after the hearing, a student confronted the chancellor in the hallway. >> i have been contacting every single day, calling your office. >> why is it that i have to drive all the way down here and have to corner you in the hallway? >> reporter: the student says she is suffering from a lung infection because she inhaled pepper spray during the november 18th incident on the campus quad. lawmakers have begun. a shocking photo, involving a casket and 15 air force members is causing outrage. >> today, the air force announces it is launching an official investigation into the

photo. take a look. the photo shows a group of airmen, posing with another group of airman. now, the photo is particularly sensitive because it follows revelations about the mishandling of remains at the air force mortuary in delaware. the message that the airmen were trying to convey in the picture is unclear at this point. vic? >> kai, thank you. the air force says it is pretty unclear whether the air force will be taking action. a scene of mangled cars. two people are dead today, and many more injured, including children. and it turns out, one of those killed died from a gunshot wound. jason allen has the story. >> reporter: it was this blue chevy tahoe that witnesses said was speeding north on college street, at incredible speeds. and at the intersection of brown boulevard, it came to a violent stop. the impact destroyed a full- sized pickup truck. and the crash was violent enough that the entire back half of a yellow compact car

was also destroyed. >> he's going over 100 miles an hour, for sure. if you look at those cars, you can tell he's going 100 miles an hour at least. it was bad. bam. and then bam, bam, bam. three or four of them. you know? >> witness jason king was at a nearby mcdonald's, when the crash happened. he ran to the nearby scene to help, finding at least one driver. then he and other witnesses saw small children climbing out of the chevy tahoe. they turned their attention in that direction until the driver did something they never expected after such a violent crash. >> he didn't jump out of the truck. he was still sitting in the truck. and i couldn't tell. it was either me or the lady running up to grab the baby. and he just shot. >> police said at least one person was killed by those gunshots. they are speaking to a person of interest they are talking to at a local hospital. but they have not yet figured out what happened or why the man fired. >> at this point, there is no indication that there is anybody at large.

to enter the home. >> this is by far, the worst hoarding situation i've ever dealt with. just the magnitude of the filth. >> reporter: deplorable conditions in a santa ana home, living inside this makeshift animal shelter for cats. five adults adults and two children, surrounded by feces and filth, from 110 cats. >> it covered at least three feet high on the walls. all the furniture was saturated. what was left on the carpet was all sat rayed. all of the furniture. one of the girls slept on a couch in the living room. it was covered in feces and urine. >> reporter: thunder sandra bird, with santa ana was the first to arrive after neighbors complained about the smell. when homeowners answered the door. >> she had cat feces from the knees down, covering her legs and feet. >> reporter: last february, two girls, 6 and 12, were rescued from this environment, along with the 110 cats. we were just overpowered within just a few minutes because the
