stomach-turning testimony. a key witness in the penn state scandal takes the stand. >> what he says happened between jerry sandusky and a young boy in a locker room shower. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> a penn state football coach takes the stand today at a preliminary hearing with school officials. mike mcqueary testifies that he did see jerry sandusky sexually molesting a boy. >> reporter: penn state assistant football coach, mike mcqueary left the courthouse after giving damning testimony against jerry sandusky and two other college officials. mcqueary testified that he saw sandusky having what he believed to be sexual intercourse with a 10- or 12- year-old boy in a campus shower in 2002. mcqueary said when he entered the locker room, he heard,

quote, rhythmic slapping sounds and that he shockingly and surprisingly saw jerry in the shower with a boy. he was behind the boy in a very, very, very close position, holding the boy's waist, the boy's hand up against the shower wall. mcqueary said he didn't try to stop it or call the police because sandusky and the boy separated before he left the locker room. he testified he didn't say anything to sandusky, who looked back at him with a blank stare. mcqueary said he immediately called his father. the next morning, he met with coach joe paterno and told him exactly what he saw, without using graphic language, out of respect. days later, mcqueary testified he made it clear to athletic director tim clairey and vice president schulz, that he saw sandusky performing, quote, severe sexual acts with the boy. they are now charged with lying to the grand jury about what they knew, charges they deny. in harrisburg, pennsylvania, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness

news. >> sandusky faces more than 50 counts of sexual abuse. he is expected to go on trial next year. an eventful first day in a fort meade military court where the army private accused of leaking secret documents. vic is in the newsroom with more on this. >> reporter: manning is accused of giving those classified documents to wikileaks last year. at a pretrial hearing, manning's attorney asked to step aside. the defense argues they whereon -- wrongly called witnesses. manning said that move was unnecessary. and releasing those documents didn't harm anyone at all. just a short time ago, the defense's request was rejected. >> today's hearing is to decide whether manning will face a court-martial on charges he aided the enemy. we'll have a live report on eyewitness news at 5:00 and 6:00. meanwhile, the founder of

wikileaks won a small thing today. they want to question assange over allegations of rape. last week, they ruled he would be sent to sweden. but today, britain's supreme court decided they would hear his appeal. we're learning more about the teenager hit and killed in an accident in baltimore county. that accident happened on putty hill avenue and wilson road in parkville. let's go to andrea fujii now in the newsroom with more. andrea? >> reporter: well, kai, that accident at puty hill avenue and wilson road, parkville, remains under investigation. officers say 15-year-old ryan chase was crossing the street when he was struck by a car, which then pushed him into the path of an suv. drivers of both vehicles stayed on the scene, where chase was pronounced dead. he was a student at parkville high school. students and staff at the school are wearing red today in

his memory. kai, back to you. >> wjz is at parksville high school today. and we'll have a live report on this story coming up new at 5:00 and 6:00. maryland's department of education will receive an infusion of cash from the federal government. maryland and eight other states will split $500 million in federal grants as part of the race-to-the-top program. the grant will pay for early childhood programs designed to keep students from falling behind their classmates. maryland is eligible for $50 million in funding. but the exact amount has not yet been announced. congress is close to a deal on a major piece of business that threatened to close it in its tracks. but lawmakers are still threatening with another proposal. tara mergener reports. >> reporter: house lawmakers approved a trillion-dollar plan, funding the federal government next year. >> the conference report is adopted. >> reporter: leading senators say they'll follow suit,

heading off a government shutdown this weekend. but lawmakers are still battling over a bill that would extend a popular tax cut and unemployment benefits. >> putting this money in the pockets of the american people who need it so desperately, and need to spend it on necessities, will inject demand into the economy and create more jobs. >> reporter: the payroll tax cut put an extra $1 million into the hands of 160 million americans this year. if not renewed, those workers will take home less manny -- money in the new year. >> reporter: the two are divided over how to cover costs. republicans want to add language that will speed up the construction of the oil pipeline. >> reporter: it's a project running from canada to texas that is unpopular with democrats. >> if that bill comes over to us, we will make changes to it. and i will guarantee you that the keystone pipeline will be in there when it goes back to the united states senate.

>> reporter: lawmakers have until december 31st to find common ground. but they're not taking any chances. the senate is working on a plan b that will extend the tax break until february, allowing lawmakers to head home and tackle the issue in the new year. on capitol hill, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> the payroll tax bill would also extend long-term unemployment benefits. if they pass, those benefits would vanish for many americans. a slightly cooler day as we wrap up the workweek. take a look outside. clouds have been hanging around most of the day. wjz has weather and traffic together. meteorologist tim williams has the updated numbers from first warning weather on this purple friday. and we'll talk with sharon gibala with this. >> is it purple or gray? make up your mind. >> gray skies. definitely all kind of adding to the feel out there. definitely cooler than it has been over the last few days. we got to 61 degrees yesterday. today, with some rain down to our south and a lot of cloud cover, we have temperatures up

an investigation is under way in virginia, after five people are found dead inside a trailer home. sheriff's deputies were called out of a report of attempted suicide. when they arrived, they found the bodies. investigators now say the person responsible was among the dead but wouldn't go into more details on that. plans to reopen a busy california freeway, after a massive tanker truck fire are delayed. crews continue to work on the paramount boulevard bridge that was damaged when a tanker truck burst into flames. a 10-mile stretch of route 60 near los angeles has been closed since wednesday. it was expected to reopen

tomorrow. but complications during the demolition are delaying that work. in today's healthwatch, the dentist chair could be a good place to detect more than just cavities. randall pinkston reports for wjz. a new study suggests dentists could screen for things like diabetes and high blood pressure. >> come on in. >> reporter: basia siegel visits her dentist more than she sees her primary care physician. >> i just saw him. and i hadn't seen him for two years. >> had you seen your dentist in less than two years? >> oh, yes. >> reporter: a new study shows siegel is not alone. 20 million americans visit the dentist at least once a year but do not see their doctor. new york university researcher sheila straus says the finding suggests dentists can do a lot more as healthcare providers. >> reporter: there is truly an opportunity for a dent i want to -- dentist to do some

screening and then can refer patients who screen positive, for systemic disease to their primary care provider. >> reporter: researchers suggest dentists could take a patient's health history, check blood pressure and x-rays to detect potential health problems. >> reporter: experts say getting dentists to screen patients for disease, would only add a few minutes to the visit and would be relatively inexpensive. >> reporter: dentists have long known that the mouth is a window to the body's health. >> we can see oral cancers. we can see the signs of tobacco use, which require us to recommend tobacco cessation. >> reporter: they could also see gum disease, which can be an indicator of diabetes. >> excellent. >> reporter: siegel is glad her dentist is looking out for her, since she doesn't see her primary doctor as much as she'd like to. >> they have the experience and the knowledge. >> reporter: along with the clean smile, patients might also be able to get a clean bill of health. in new york, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the study also found

[ stock bells ringing ] the major markets were mixed in trading today. the dow is down 3. but the s&p is up 4. nasdaq is up 14. let's go to new york right now for the cbs money watch update. >> the securities and exchange commission is suing six former top executives at fannie mae and freddie mac, for fraud. they're accused of misleading the government and taxpayers about risky, subprime mortgages the companies held during the housing bust. it includes two form ceos. the world trade organization has agreed to let russia become its newest member. that should give a boost to russia's economy, and that of its biggest trading partner,

the european union. it will allow them to more easily trade goods. russia has been working for 18 years to win the status. the company behind the popular facebook game, farmville and words with friends launched the biggest internet ipo since google. shares of zinga, went above 10% of their price. and then rolled below that price after trading. analysts say it shows a concern about zinga's growth on facebook and its prospects. today is the last day to order things to ship in time for christmas. this could surpass cyber monday for the biggest shopping day of the year. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. >> can another baltimore movie make it on broadway? well, we're about to find out. ron matz has the latest on barry levinson's plan to return to the diner.

[ laughter ] >> you know. i tell you, you know. but what we're watching. we have been watching these cruise ships coming in and out. these will be coming in and out. and with the weather we've had over the last few days, i have to think some of those want to stay here. >> i know. vacation here in baltimore. >> yeah, you know. >> we were at 62 degrees just after midnight today, this morning. >> wow. >> and temperatures have been dropping through the morning. but 62 degrees going into the week before christmas. how can you complain about that. it's cooling down. more seasonably appropriate for what we expect this time of year. right now, temperatures are currently at bwi, thurgood marshall, in the 30s. we're at 33 degrees now.

25 is your dew point. relative humidity at 38%. winds from the west/northwest, keeping a bit of a chilly wind going across. and 30.18 is your barometer reading. around the state, we have 31 in oakland now. 47 in ocean city. and we have in the northeast corner of the state. 44. 44 down in d.c. you look around the metro area, we are ranging from 41 in westminster to 46 down in annapolis and kent island. water temperatures are still around 47 degrees. so it's moderating the temperatures right around the water's edge there. temperatures are still reflecting a bit of a mild range there, right around the chesapeake bay. winds coming from the northwest, and without a lot of cloud cover, or we had the cloud cover last night, when temperatures got up to about 63 degrees right before midnight. the clouds kind of locked everything in. all of that warmth and moisture. so we stayed in the 60s right after midnight. but now that the clouds have started to break a little bit, we're starting to see more of a flow from the northwest. and it's cooling us down. all of that heat and humidity is starting to rise out of the

atmosphere. what we're seeing now, a little disturbance. riding from the gulf into the southern edge. midatlantic. this system is extending from virginia,, across the tennessee and kentucky range, right down past shreves port and over toward texas. and that rain is going to extend right on past us. we'll see maybe a sprinkle or so before this is all said and done because there's just so much moisture in the atmosphere. but most of the rain stays down to our south. what we're going to get out of this is cloud cover. a lot of that rain is not making it to the ground. but is contributing to the cloud cover in the atmosphere. as high pressure moves in, it will be the clockwise flow into the high that will tap into some of that northwest wind. and that's what we'll have through the weekend. the tradeoff is, we'll have sunshine back. we'll see cooler temperatures. and that's going to bring temperatures back down to about average, which is in the low to mid-40s. and that's only for a short time. this is how it shapes up. small craft advisory, lifted as

francisco. >> reporter: home run king barry bonds walked into federal court, facing more than a year in prison time. but he got none. a judge sentenced him to 30 days of house arrest and two years probation. bonds of convicted in april of giving misleading testimony to a grand jury eight years ago. it was part of an investigation into steroid use among baseball players. when asked if his trainer ever injected him with performance- enhancing drugs, bonds gave evasive answers. throughout this, he said he was convinced he was getting flaxseed oil. >> bonds is last of 11 implicated in the investigation of balco labs and its illegal distribution of steroids to professional athletes. all the others were either convicted or pleaded guilty. >> reporter: the steroid controversy damaged bonds'

legacy in baseball. >> barry bonds is the babe ruth and the willie mays of his era. when a player of that stature comes under question, it gins to bring into question the entire era of the sport. >> reporter: bonds didn't speak in court and will remain free until his appeal. >> now, bonds has 14 days to file an intention to appeal his conviction. the judge has ruled he will remain free until then. a chicago bears wide receiver is in federal custody, accused of trying to set up a massive drug distribution network. he allegedly agreed to buy cocaine and marijuana. bears' coach lovie smith says this is a total surprise. the man accused of firing shots at the white house will stand trial. a judge has denied another request for a mental

examination. ortega is accused of using an assault rifle, last month, to fire on the white house, allegedly targeting president obama. prosecutor his asked for more psychological tests to make sure they could proceed with the case. hundreds of former a&m students. >> reporter: students matched to -- marched to governor rick scott's mansion after calling for james ammons to step down. [ chanting ] >> ammons has been asked to leave, amid multiple investigations of the death of drum major robert champion. champion died in a football game. in an incident police say involved hazing. florida officials say the probe led to discovering financial irregularities with the band's finances. now, they do not report directly to scott. but scott is responsible for selecting some of the board of trustees. vic? >> they have started an online

petition, supporting their president. a serial killer mystery on new york's long island. this week, police found the remains of a prostitute, who vanished a year and a half ago. her disappearance led to the discovery of 10 more bodies. aaron moriarte reports with the latest. >> reporter: it took more than 18 months and massiveerts -- massive efforts by man and machine. but police in long island this week think they finally found shannon gilbert, a 23-year-old woman missing since may 2010. >> we on this day, at april 9:14 a.m., located a set of skeletal remains. >> reporter: gilbert was the catalyst for what has become long island's largest homgdz investigation -- homicide investigation. late last year, police searching for her, stum -- stumbled on the bodies of other women. 10 in all. richard dormer voiced what

everyone feared. >> we're looking at that, that we could have a serial killer. >> reporter: shannon gilbert, a new jersey escort, vanished after making a panicked 911 call, and running from a client's home, in a beach front gated community. the client is not a suspect because the other victims were also linked to the sex trade, gilbert's family feared she had become number 11. investigators criticized for not acting fast enough when shannon gilbert first disappeared, continued to search for her, until tuesday morning. >> i got the word. they said, we found her. we believe it's her. >> reporter: the body believed to be gilbert's, was found in a marshy area, just a half mile from where she disappeared, leading investigators investigators to theorize that she simply drowned. >> now, friends and family refused to believe gilbert drowned, saying the evidence suggests foul play. and tomorrow night, 48 hour mystery takes an in-depth look at the long island serial

killer case. you can see it here at 10:00, here on wjz. quitting smoking may have more benefits than just improving your physical health. mary has more on the new findings. >> reporter: the study by the university of wisconsin shows people who quit smoking become happier. they say many people put off trying to quit because they believe it will put too much stress on their lives. however, a survey of those who recently quit smoking shows a majority of them have less stress and an improved mood. the authors of the study say it wasn't necessarily cause and effect. but they hope the increase will help motivate for people to quit smoking. >> according to the centers for disease control and prevention, smokers die 13 to 14 years earlier than nonspokers. the deep water horizon blowout. cameron corporation will pay bp $250 million to settle all claims related to the gulf oil spill.

bp says the payment will go into a trust fund. the fund is set aside to cover the cost of cleanup, along with paying individual businesses affected by the oil spill. sometimes nature catches a break. despite a pounding this past summer from tropical storm lee, alex demetrick reports, a tropical resource that was feared damaged. >> it trickles from the susquehanna to the chesapeake. debris spread for miles. at the height of the crab season. >> from firewood to propane tanks to hot water heaters. >> reporter: then this fall, it kept other watermen ashore. after they killed off oysters in the bay. >> when we the went out there in november, they were all dead. >> but what worried researchers was what all of that was doing to bay grasses. >> see that ribbon-like grass, that's all like wild celery, which is head of the bay stuff. pretty good odds that most of it has come from the flats. >> reporter: the susquehanna

flats, where the river merged with the bay. it was feared one of the largest collections was grass or destroyed. >> the good news is, it was still there. we are excited that they survived having the tropical storm come through. >> it showed most of the flat's 16,000 underwater grasses made it. and because they did, a lot of other life gets a shot as well. >> they're a major habitat for fish and shellfish. and they also provide food for water fowl. >> reporter: but in the past, they were no match for this force. >> agnes decimated on the flat. -- flats. but agnes came in june. >> it turned out it may have had a big part in the grass's survival. >> it would have made a huge difference. hurricane agnes came through in june when the plants were just starting to come up. if that had happened with tropical storm lee, the effects would have been much more severe. >> reporter: and a real blow to a bay struggling to recover. alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> it's estimated that tropical

storm lee poured 29 trillion gallons of water into the bay. >> well, it's a little too cold to be out on the water today. but will it stay cool? a live look outside now and an overcast end to the afternoon. we have weather and traffic together. bob turk is here with first warning weather. bob? >> i think probably yesterday, with temperatures in the low 60s. some of you probably could have gone in the water. water is still too cold. take a look at radar. we have a few light sprinkles across western maryland. a few snowflakes above 1500 feet. light rain across southern virginia, sliding off to the east. salisbury, ocean city, maybe even cambridge. might even mix with a few wet snowflakes. but that's going to move out of here quickly. take a look at temperatures. and i'll show you the difference. it's 28 now in oakland. 47, ocean city. 46 in pax river. but compared to yesterday, temperatures have dropped 15 degrees here. 24 degrees cold ner oakland. -- colder in oakland, and only seven degrees colder in ocean

soldiers storm an anti- military protest camp, beating women with sticks and hurling chunks of concrete in egypt.

two protestors were shot and killed in the clashes. the turmoil comes after millions voted. the assault was an attempt to clear out voters who camped out for three weeks. it's not clear how many remain in custody. colton harris moore, pleads guilty today in washington. and kai is in the newsroom with this case. >> harris moore admits he is guilty of burglary and theft charges. the 20-year-old pled guilty to a total of 33 counts from two different counties, including identity theft and theft of a firearm. now, his case earned him international fame. and a movie deal, after he stole a plane in indiana. money from the movie will be used to pay the damages of his victims. state prosecutors are asking for a 9 1/2-year sentence. denise? >> thank you, kai. moore has a history of theft. his first conviction came at age 12, when he broke into the homes of classmates to steal food. a kissing prank turns sour. blindfolded high school students get mystery kisses at a prep rally.

the kids thought they were getting food but they were really locking lips with their parents. it was a joke but not funny. the principal says it was embarrassing and inappropriate. trapped in a chimney. rescuers save a teen from a chimney, after he uses the fireplace to try to escape a curfew. >> reporter: firefighters lift a soot-covered 18-year-old jorge herrera, out of the chimney, after spending hours trapped inside. after rescuers saved him from the confined space, the embarrassed teen walked by our cameras, only answering "nothing," when we asked what happened. exactly how the teen got stuck is something only he knows. but a relative told firefighters, jorge came in after his curfew and tried to sneak inside by sneaking down the chimney into his bedroom. his mother, equally embarrassed, at first said her

son got stuck because he was cleaning the chimney. >> he thought the hole was going to be big but it was small. >> reporter: but once the dust settled, she realized her son was trying to get inside. firefighters say feet first. >> i would guess that he had his hands on the edge, and released into the chimney, thinking it would be kind of a nice, smooth transition into the house. but it just didn't work out that way. >> reporter: with the teen's feet seen dangling inside, jorge was stuck, until his sleeping mother eventually heard the cries for help. the rescue a first, even for veteran firefighters. everyone here, glad the teen is okay. >> dirty and embarrassed, and it remains to be seen what his parents will do. >> reporter: firefighter his tol break the chimney apart, using ropes and a little soap. the 18-year-old was not hurt. actor christian bale is talking about his rough time in china. >> why can i not go visit this man? >> the hollywood star was pushed around when he tried to

might even mix some sleet down there. we're at 43. 28 now in oakland. yesterday, they were in the 50s. 39 in cumberland. and 44 over in oakland. locally, temperatures in the low to mid-40s. now, this is exactly where the temperatures are supposed to be today in december. our northwest wind came through the area. it hit this southerly and southeasterly winds. kept us in the warm air. the actual high occurred at 3:00 in the morning. before midnight, it was up to 62. and it's been dropping all day long. it's a light northwest wind, not a big, strong breeze. but tomorrow will be stronger. low pressure that has developed over portions of arkansas. and the lower tennessee valley is moving across southern virginia, as we speak, with rain down there. it's showing a little frozen precip over kentucky. not really reporting anything reaching the ground. but some of the mountain areas, maybe 2,000 feet, might see a little bit of wet snow tonight, as this system rolls off quickly to the east. it's still quite cloudy.
