11:00 pm
how about my - i'm so proud of this product. this is my retinolmax night cream. ten different unique peptides, plus maximum amount of retinol without causing the irritation. key product. there is a peel in here too, right? absolutely. glycolic acid peel. you will love it. once a week, get rid of the dead old skin cells. bring the bright - oh you have to, you have to, brighten your face. change the appearance of the skin, so profoundly. this kit here will take care of the eight signs of aging. lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, clogged pores, loss of firmness - this is going to firm the appearance of your skin. even odd discolorations. red discolorations, dark discolorations. change the contour of your face. it is a remarkable collection. it is not ordinary skin care. these are cosmeceuticals, this is science based. speaking of science, i want to ask you.
11:01 pm
the newest ingredient that we should be looking for, because i know you keep up with this, what should we be looking for? peptides. more and more peptides are coming into the market. peptides teach our skin how to act younger. very important, very interesting, newly emerging - peptides in here? oh, are you kidding? ten of them here, five of them here, seven of them here. this is - this collection is all about ingredients. active ingredients in the right percentages. and plus, the most critical element, because you find these peptides in many other products, except they are so little, in terms of the ingredient, that it doesn't do it much. here, right products and the right ingredient. and of course this is a $950 retail value, you are getting it with your gift of $250. sugar - you say not to eat it. but what about stevia? stevia is great. stevia is a natural product. i'm so glad. it doesn't taste exactly like sugar, but try to get used to it, please, because it is worth it in terms of the physiological benefits.
11:02 pm
well, that is great, we are getting so much information. remember, essential collection, $150, $350 value and of course the big luxury collection here with your gift of $250. both wh the dvd. and now we are going back over to the lovely lee newton. and you may be saying to yourself, skin care, anti-aging, this is something different for my public television station, but you know what, we are all about self-improvement. whether it is helping you learn to cook or to garden or to just find greater purpose in your life. today we are talking about your skin and it is important to all of us. so if it's important to you, why not go to the phone right now, support the station that gave you great information. because we want to continue to do that for years to come. now, of course we have wonderful ways to thank you when you join us for a $60 contribution we have the dvd with bonus material not seen in this program and we also have dr. denese's incredible soft cover book, and this has even more information that she was able
11:03 pm
to cover in the television special. so all about enlarged pores, broken capillaries, adult acne, so much is here. so we are going back to the program, dr. denese is going to tell us about something many of us are not doing, but it's very important and we will be waiting by the phone for you, thanks. you're so kind. thank you very much. well, welcome back. now i'm going to tell you about the most important part of your skin care routine, the part that makes the greatest difference in the look of your skin. yet, this is the part that most of you don't do properly. why not? because it's somewhat counterintuitive as per traditional skin care ideas. so what is this step? exfoliation. now, exfoliation is a serious business.
11:04 pm
it is perhaps the most critical step in bringing back long-lost radiance into your skin. however, the vast majority of the adult population under-exfoliates. why? because one of the most common skin care fallacies says, exfoliation, or over-exfoliation, may thin the skin in the long run. now, if you agree, i understand, because it's intuitive to think so. however, this statement is completely unfounded scientifically. the skin is a dynamic organ. the more you wear it down, the more it grows. don't be afraid of exfoliation. most people vastly under-exfoliate. don't be afraid, as long as you follow directions on the label
11:05 pm
and apply some common sense. so how do you know if you exfoliate enough? look in the mirror. if you see clogged pores around the nose and forehead, and bumpiness under the skin, if the face is lacking radiance, looks dull and sallow, you are not exfoliating enough. most of these problems can be successfully addressed by proper exfoliation. although we always have to bear in mind that individual results do vary. one of the best exfoliants is glycolic acid. but... if you think that all you have to do is buy a face wash with glycolic acid that promises exfoliation, think again. typically, a glycolic acid face wash contains about 1% to 2% of glycolic acid.
11:06 pm
you may need 5 to 10 times that much on a daily basis. exfoliation is truly the key building block toward your goal of flawless skin, for the following reasons. exfoliation can stimulate cellular turnover and it can stimulate the skin cell's own collagen-making machinery, which can ultimately improve the look of lines and wrinkles. if you have a layer of thick, dead sn on top of your skin, can't reach the skin properly. exfoliation is key for the powerful ingredients to reach your skin. exfoliation can help resolve skin dryness, because your moisture can reach your skin properly. exfoliation is your final cleansing step. it is your last chance to open up clogged pores
11:07 pm
before they become little bumps under your skin. and, very importantly, exfoliation is the only way to bring back a youthful glow and radiance into your skin by using a cosmetic preparation. as we grow older, the natural exfoliation process becomes more and more sluggish. so much so that in the absence of extra exfoliation, the skin turns ashen and dull and sallow. it loses that famous translucent radiant look of youth. one of the more common reasons why someone would complain of dry skin is that there's a thick layer of dead, old skin cells covering the skin's surface. moisturizers can't permeate properly. so if you feel dry, you need to do something that is a bit counterintuitive,
11:08 pm
you need to exfoliate first. now, how do you exfoliate properly? one of the most effective ways to exfoliate is to use an 8% to 10% glycolic acid peel pad every night. you can find this in specialty shops, although it may not be easy to find. now, please don't fall for the readily available commercial varieties, because they may not be strong enough for you. they may contain a fractctn of the strength that you need. the label says all the right things that you're hoping for, it has all the right ingredients, but it's the wrong amounts. the right strength of glycolic acid pad has to give you a slight tingle. that's how you know it's working. no tingle, no results. remember, skin care doesn't always have to feel good.
11:09 pm
the right glycolic acid peel, that is such a powerful tool that you should see results in about one to two weeks. if there are no positive changes in that time span, it's not strong enough for you, bri it back. now, why don't skin care companies know what strength to use? well, they do know, they do know, but they're afraid of liability and returns. it's cheaper to disappoint you than to handle returns and complaints. in my opinion, you deserve more credit than that. when you find the right face pad, i want you to do an experiment. wash your face and use a toner like you would normally do. then take a pad and wipe your face again and see how much dirt comes off still. now, once or twice a week, use a microdermabrasion cream in addition to the pads. use the more modern ones
11:10 pm
with the very fine granule, as opposed to a regular coarse exfoliating scrub. coarse scrubs scratch your skin, and that's not what we want. we want micropolish with fine granules. you don't need to buy one of those handheld microdermabrasion machines. you can do a better job exfoliating with your own hands. the only other thing to remember is that once you polish off some of the top layer of the skin, the skin lipid barrier needs to be repaired with some essential fatty acids and ceramides. otherwise you will feel dry. trust yourself. you have an uncanny ability to judge what works on your skin. don't read the promise on the jar, read your skin in the mirror. that's all you need to know. now, you hear so much about skin peels performed in spas and doctor's offices,
11:11 pm
so let's talk about them a bit. skin peels are skin resurfacing procedures. they polish away skin from the top layer, the epidermis, or some of the deeper dermis layer, in order to encourage regeneration of fresh new skin. peels can be sorted by depth, as in how much skin they remove. there are four main categories of peels -- at-home cosmetic exfoliating peels that you would buy and give to yourself. then you have superficial in-office peels that require no recovery time. for instance, glycolic peels and microdermabrasion. then you have medium-depth peels. these are done under anesthesia and require about a week of recovery time. deep peels. these require anesthesia always.
11:12 pm
and about two weeks of recovery time, when you must stay home because you may look positively frightening to an outside observer. the at-home cosmetic exfoliating peels come in at least three varieties -- chemical, which is aha/bha peels; mechanical, which is microdermabrasion creams; and enzymatic peels. none of these peels exfoliate the skin to any dangerous degree. there's a wide margin of safety built in, so you don't have to worry, just follow the directions and apply some common sense. use them once or twice a week. alternate between chemical and mechanical ones. just remember, don't be afraid of exfoliation, but do follow the directions on the package. trust yourself. you are the best judge. if you see a change, great. if there's no change, the peel is not good enough.
11:13 pm
but most importantly, keep using your daily glycolic acid peel pads because this is the workhorse for your skin. now, if you have an opportunity to go to a spa or a doctor's office for superficial peels, in addition to the home ones, do so. but if you don't have the time, or the finances, don't feel left out. but be even more serious about your daily glycolic acid peel pads and your weekly at-home exfoliation, and you will achieve results similar to a high-priced office visit. to be honest, i have so little time, i seldom do in-office peels on myself, bubuat the office, i work with faces of others, not on my own, but i never missed a single day of using the glycolic acid pads or microdermabrasion peels several times a week. the spa or medical office based glycolic acid peels
11:14 pm
and microdermabrasions are sometimes called "lunchtime peels." by definition, they don't involve any recovery time. then there are some laser procedures called laser facials. they are expensive and they don't give you much more than a light chemical peel. superficial peels never go beyond the first layer of skin, the epidermis. they will give you great exfoliation, clean pores, and bring radiance back to dull, ashen-looking skin. however, in terms of lines and wrinkles, they are not equipped to give you a dramatic improvement. they simply don't go deep enough. you know, i see many salons advertising microdermabrasion, or lunchtime peels, as something that "removes lines and takes away dark skin discolorations." please don't fall for this.
11:15 pm
there's a big difference between minimally improving the look of lines and discolorations versus removing lines and dark spots, which only a medium or a deep peel can do. medium peels go beyond the epidermis and include some of the dermis. medium-depth peel can be chemical or laser-based -- for instance, erbium laser. they are done under anesthesia. recovery time runs around one week. they are most effective in treating dark discolorations, sun spots, age spots, but they can remove light lines or wrinkles as well. only a doctor should perform a medium-depth peel because there are risks involved. well, deep peels are much like having a new lease on the life of your skin. your old skin is literally burned off, and when it regenerates, it can be
11:16 pm
as smooth and flawless as the skin of a child. these days, most deep peels are done by laser and they are always performed under anesthesia. deep peels reach the dermis layer of the skin and they can actually remove wrinkles. the initial recovery time for deep peels can take up to two weeks. during this time you cannot go out of the house at all because you will look positively frightening to everyone else, including yourself. redness can last up to 6 months, or even more. now, deep peels are really not for everyone. a few people have them done, and it's almost always a once in a lifetime occurrence. you must be truly motivated and able to take the physical difficulties in stride. fortunately, the payoff is extraordinary. but just remember, the deeper, the more likely the complications. never allow anyone except a doctor
11:17 pm
to perform a deep peel on you. in the next segment, i'm going to show you the best, most scientifically advanced ways of improving the look of lines and wrinkles at home. every time i watch it, i sit there with a pen and paper writing it down so that i can keep track of what i need to do to try to prolong youth. right? isn't that what we all want to do? i am laura savini and this program, there is lots coming up. we are going to go through the dangers of sun exposure and what you can do to counteract that and also the anatomy of a wrinkle. so there is lots more coming up. i think it's amazing that we have a doctor like this, access to a doctor like this here on public television. and you think about all the information you have right here on public television that you have access to.
11:18 pm
how does this happen? because viewers like you, someone like you watching makes a call and a pledge of support. so we are going to ask you to do that right now. show your support for the science that you are learning here. that is what i love about it, it's a practical application of science. you are learning how science plays into your everyday life. a $60 gift, we are going to send you a copy of the dvd with all the bonus footage. now, of course there is some other thank you gifts that we are going to tell you about and dr. denese is here to share that with us. now, we have two incredible packages that you have made available. now, i want you to just listen quickly to these numbers. this is a $150 pledge gift. we will give you the essentials collection and the dvd. this has very important products in it. $150 gift to this station. a $350 value. and the deluxe edition, the deluxe collection, is at a $250 pledge. 15 full size products, retail value of $950.
11:19 pm
so dr. denese, first of all, i have to say thank you for making this available, we appreciate that. but let's quickly go through what we get in the essentials and why we call it that. absolutely. hydroshield serum. ladies, this is a very important product. why? because i can give you a 184% increase in hydration in 15 minutes time. what does that mean to you? dry lines and wrinkles vastly change in their appearance. key product. award-winning. this is an incredible product. science based, again. it's important to say that. when you can quote numbers like that. yes, absolutely, it's based on the best of science. lipids that are virtually identical to your own skin. so they talk to your skin. they connect with your skin. very important product. spf 30, day cream this is how you walk out of the house every single day. if you don't do that, you are aging beyond your time.
11:20 pm
past beyond your time, because everything you hate about your skin: lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, loss of firmness, all that has to do with sun exposure. so spf 30 day difference cream, it looks gorgeous on your skin. looks like makeup, it's really pretty, you will love it. it's all you need. then, i'm giving you my exfoliating facial firming pads, critical step at night, don't ever skip it. your skin will thank you for it. it will bring luster and radiance back into your skin. also shrinks the pores, softens the look of lines. then, age corrector night cream, right here. facial firming age corrector, night cream. extremely popular product. then something for your eyes. i'm giving you two products for your eyes, one is for your upper eye lid, the other is for your lower eye lid. why am i giving you two products for your eyes? because the skin is very different on the upper eye lid versus the under eye lid.
11:21 pm
so how can i give you the same thing? i didn't. i specially formulated it for the upper and lower, you are going to love this product. so that is the essential collection at the $150 gift level, with the dvd, with all the bonus footage, and of course this is with your gift to the station. this is the gift we give back to you and with instructions so you will have no problem figuring out which to use and now we are going over to lee newton. and perhaps you have been watching this program, ageless skin, and thinking, i have been doing everything wrong. maybe you haven't been exfoliating, you haven't been cleansing properly. or moisturizing the right way. well, don't feel bad because it's never too late to get started. it's never too late to really improve your skin and improve its radiance, and that is what dr. denese is teaching us to harness the power of science. it's also never too late to support public television and this station right now because you are gegeing so much great, useful information for your life,
11:22 pm
why not say thanks by making a call or going online and making that contribution today. now for a $60 contribution, we have the dvd of the program that you have been enjoying - ageless skin, of course, and this has bonus features, a special consultation with dr. denese. we also have her incredible book and this is ageless skin, secrets from dr. dene.e if you would like to have this wonderful book with even more great skin care tips, then pick this up, for a $75 contribution. but by all means, the important thing is that you are supporting great information that has been brought to you by this public television station. we want to stay here for years to come, doing the same for you. why not say thanks and make that call or go online right now? now, when you look in magazines and see the ads and things, i have noticed a very hot word lately is organic. organic this, organic that. explain to us what that means or doesn't mean. natural.
11:23 pm
that's what it means, natural. interesting question. in essence - ingredients that are based on science have their origin in natural products. they come from melons, melon extracts, they come from cucumbers, apples, simple products that you are familiar with. however, in order to make them more powerful and more concentrated and more effective, we have to concentrate them and then we no longer can say that it's a melon extract or a cucumber extract, we have to give it a scientific name and then it frightens you because it looks like a chemical name. it isn't. it has to do with apple concentrates, melon concentrates, blueberries, other antioxidants, vitamins and the like. so that - for example, retinol is a very high concentration of vitamin a. so when you turn it into science, when you turn these ingredients into science, they get a different name. okay, so that makes a lot of sense.
11:24 pm
so now you know what we are doing here is sharing with people the medical science. not a marketing science, because you have taken these ingredients and just revved them up and given us the most potent skin care products we can find. that's the most important difference here. that my products are all about science, all about extremely high potency ingredients. it's the right ingredient, the right active ingredient in the right percentages. and that is what is different from regular cosmetic ingredients. these are cosmeceuticals. now, before we run out of time and go back to the show, tell us what is in this package because it's a $950 retail value, which you will get with your gift of $250. so tell us what's in there. yeah, i've got these 15 full sized products in order to be able to address the eight cardinal signs of aging. what are you getting? you are getting my facial firming pads that fight to exfoliate. you are getting another facial firming pads for the day time

11:26 pm
with that gift for $250, plus the dvd. it is a wonderful way for you to show your support to this station. i'm sure you will enjoy using all of these. we are going back to the final act of the show right now. watch and make that call or pledge online right now. well, great. welcome back. here we have arrived at a critical juncture in skin care. we have come to the skin-building step intended to improve the look of wrinkles. now, you know, there may be eight signs of aging on the face, but for most of us, the most alarming one, the one that makes us feel old, is wrinkles. now, a wrinkle is made up of three parts -- the skin component, the underlying muscle component,
11:27 pm
and the subcutaneous fat component. you know, you may find it interesting to know that muscles don't generate wrinkles anywhere else on the body except on the face. facial muscles are unique. while other muscles originate on a bone and then connect to a bone so we can move, facial muscles originate from a bone and then they attach to the skin directly. therefore, every time you smile or frown, the muscles pull on the skin from underneath, making a wrinkle. when the skin is young, it doesn't matter because it snaps right back. but as the skin ages and collagen breaks down, the skin will yield to the pulling force and develop a wrinkle along the pulling force of the muscle.
11:28 pm
many people use botox injections, around the eyes and forehead, to protect against muscle action. botox lasts for a few months and then you have to repeat the injection. there are a few topical skin-relaxing agents on the market as well that claim to serve a similar function. the effect is miniscule in comparison to the injections. the second critical component of generating deep wrinkles is the loss of fat under the skin. and fat is critical. as we grow older, we lose fat from the central part of the face. it's one of the most cruel tricks of nature, i tell you. as we grow older, fat settles in the midsection on the body and then yet we lose fat from the central part of the face where we need it desperately. fat loss on the face is very aging.
11:29 pm
fat loss under the eyes and on the cheeks gives rise to a hollowed, aged look. fat loss is partially to blame for the loss of projection of the cheeks. the deep lines that run from the nose to the mouth, called the nasolabial folds, are created not so much by the skin, but mostly by the fat and muscles. the deep nasolabial folds cannot be treated fully by topical skin care alone. they respond well to injectable cosmetic fillers as well. to win the war against wrinkles, you have to treat not only the skin but also the underlying muscle layer and the loss of fat. if you are treating only one of the three causes of wrinkle formation, you are addressing only part of the puzzle.
11:30 pm
the third critical component of the wrinkle is the skin itself, which thins out and becomes dry, fragile, and lined as we age. the skin ages for both intrinsic, or internal, reasons and extrinsic, or external, reasons. what are the intrinsic factors? the first one is oxidative damage that manifests itself in the form of free radical formation. free radicals attack collagen molecules in the skin, making them rigid and making the skin less elastic. some of the most important free radical fighting agents are vitamin c, vitamin e, vitamin a, alpha lipoic acid, coq 10, selenium, just to name a few. other important causes of skin aging are glycation and protein carbonylation.
11:31 pm
this cause is remarkably important, and it's being more and more recognized as science progresses. glycation occurs when sugar molecules cross-link with skin collagen, making the collagen more rigid and less functional. eventually the skin loses elasticity and starts to sag and shsh lines. glycation is one of the reasons why keeping the level of circulating sugar in the blood to a minimum is critical. from the perspective of aging, this is one of the reasons why we say that sugar is the single most aging food you can eat, for both your skin and your body in general. the nutritional supplement called carnosine appears to hold a key role in protecting us from glycosylation and protein carbonylation. the name "carnosine" is worth remembering
11:32 pm
because it's one of the most important oral supplements that you can take. look for it as an ingredient in skin care as well. essential fatty acids. long-chain omega-3 -- from fish oil, especially -- plays a key role in aging. use them as an oral supplement and look for essential fatty acids in topical skin care as well. other intrinsic factors which affect the skin are hormonal decline. the loss of hormones -- estrogen, progesterone, and, to some extent, testosterone. the loss of these hormones create a dramatic change in skin quality within months after menopause. for you men, these changes are much more gradual. however, in spite of these powerful intrinsic pro-aging forces, the skin actually is remarkably resilient
11:33 pm
and would last a lot longer if it weren't for the chief extrinsic reason -- the sun. the sun generates free radical damage so it ties in with the oxidative skin-aging process. i can't stress enough how important it is to avoid sun exposure. when comparing the internal reasons of skin aging to the main external reason, which is the sun, the sun steals the show. it's by far the most significant reason why skin ages, especially before hormonal losses set in. the chances are that nearly everything that you don't like about your skin ultimately comes from the sun. from lines to sagging to enlarged pores, red capillaries, dark age spots -- the sun mercilessly breaks down collagen, so as you lose collagen, the skin thins and becomes less elastic, and the muscle underneath
11:34 pm
pulls the skin. the skin develops wrinkles along the lines of facial expression. then, as the skin continues to thin and sag, pores enlarge, red capillaries begin to show, and age spots begin to appear. skin cancers are the most dreaded consequence of sun exposure. it is never too late to start protecting your skin. so, you have cleaned, toned, and exfoliated your skin in the hope of better absorption. now you are ready to stimulate the skin's own collagen-making machinery. the first phase in skin care is to apply a thin serum that feeds the skin water-soluble ingredients. essentially, all scientific ingredients are aiming in the direction of collagen buildup. in addition to the classic collagen builders,
