slamming on the breaking, the baltimore grand prix faces a very uncertain future. what happens next for the race and why this could be the finish line? hi everybody, i'm mary bubala, denise and vic are off. here's what people are talking about tonight. the city cancels planned for the race in the future. >> reporter: the grand prix is $12 million in debt.

city officials say they have run out of patience. the first baltimore grand prix may be the last. baltimore racing development in the red for millions, the rd owes $950,000, more than 50 grand for parking, half a million in taxes an a quarter million for the event fee. the major set a december 31st deadline for racing development to pay up or it would be the finish line for the grand prix. >> i was very clear. restructure, recapitalize, sale but they need to pay their debt. >> reporter: former ceo jade davidson told wjz, they couldn't pay the costs. >> we don't have the money just sitting there other wise we would have paid it. >> reporter: officers and managers have failed to take the appropriate steps to put the company on a sustainable path forward. the only way the race could go

on if another group steps in. >> i think the time is really tight to try to do that at this point. >> reporter: david troy sued race officials for cutting down trees along the track. he says they were on shaky ground way before the checkered flag. >> without a sponsor, there was no way to imagine how they were going to cover all the costs that we're associated with the race. >> reporter: now it's those costs that may bring the race to a screeching halt. and if a new group steps up to run the race it would need approval from both the city and indy car. today indy car says they are confidence they have find a new group. >> megan thank you, the state has filed a tax lien against baltimore racing. we reached out to members of the board tonight, they did not return our phone calls. sky chopper 13 flying over route 50 near white hall road.

a truck leaking fluids caused back ups. police finally reopened the road three hours later. charged with murder, two abortion doctors are in trouble in its first of its kind death. the allegations follow a 16 month long allegation of a botched abortion. the controversial case is making headlines. >> reporter: the police investigation began last year when police say dr. steven bringum and nicola riley conducted part of the abortion in new jersey and transferred her to baltimore to finish it. >> it contained the fetus, some of them appeared to be close to full term. >> reporter: dr. riley faces

one count of first degree murder. dr.brigum faces five counts of murder. the indictment is sealed. late term abortions are legal in maryland but wjz has learned that prosecutors are planning to use a viable fetus law. until now only used in homicides involving pregnant women. right now the clinic is closed. >> we have the least restrictive abortion laws in the country. >> reporter: state senator worked to increase oversight of abortion clinics. >> do you think these new regulations go far enough. >> they are a great start. i think they will save lives. >> reporter: both doctors are currently being held in out of state jails awaiting extradition. adam may, wjz eyewitness news. more details on the charges

will be available in court documents that could be made public next week. the man accused of killing a maryland native could face the death penalty. police say michael plumador accused of killing lemon. he beat her to death, stuffed her body in a freezer then dismembered her. it is a fight to the finish in iowa. republican candidates are criss crossing the state looking for votes. >> reporter: a surging rick santorum drew cameras in this restaurant in iowa. >> i'm a little surprised with the scale of the turn out. let me apologize to everybody here. >> reporter: the former senator is chasing gop front runner mitt romney. he rallied crowds friday with cheer leading from new jersey

one i'm truly in line with. >> reporter: candidates will spend the weekend trying to convince people of their vote. >> he's due back in iowa tomorrow, ron paul is spending the weekend at home in texas. maryland's water ways are more dangerous than they used to be. the state had its most deadly year on the water. 10 more people were killed this year. the victims were sailor, water men and pleasure boaters. all the victims were men expect one and most were not wearing life jackets. somebody left a large chunk of cash in some clothes donated to the thrift shop. the church won't say how much money they received but they're trying to track down the donor to make sure it was a gift and not a mistake. >> then they say no we really

meant to donate that to you, that would be wonderful for our thrift shop and our community but we really want to find that person to at least be able to thank them. for now the money is sitting in the bank. a worker saw the owner and the car but she just does not know who it is. tens of thousands of people had downtown to ring in 2012. the fireworks show will be better than ever. weijia jiang shows us the prep. >> reporter: it's called the new year's eve spectacular for a reason. >> it's just so amazing, the lights just light everything up at night. and it's like you don't get overwhelmed by all the lights. >> reporter: baltimore born and raised weaver never misses the fireworks show at the harbor. but before the skyline can look like this, workers have to set up to shelves where all the magic happens. >> it's a lot of work. it's dirty work but it's fun.

>> reporter: technicians say this year's display is the biggest ever. >> last year the show may have been going up like this this year it's going to be a lot bigger. a lot bigger bombs in the air. >> reporter: tens of thousands are expected to atten. welcome news for this 12-year- old who wants to show off his hometown. >> some people say baltimore isn't a very nice city. so i think look at the fireworks and you will see how nice it is. >> reporter: downtown businesses can't wait for crowds either and the economic bang it will bring. it's really wrapping up our year on a super high note. >> reporter: high in the sky. 800feet high to be exact. the count down to the midnight fireworks show but the party down here starts a lot earlier with a live band that plays soul and funk. if you're staying in to

are -- investigators believe most were started in parking cars and spread to near by homes. the former home of jim morrison was among those damaged. a police officer pulls a man out of a burning car then arrests him on drunk driving charges. the man had his foot on the accelerator which caused the engine to catch fire. the man was so drunk, he did not even respond when the officer told him to get out of the car. a marine was selling a necklace his girlfriend posted

on craigslist, when man shot him.. tanker has been releaseed from the hospital. he says he was never wounded during several tours in afghanistan and iraq. police have arrested two men in connection with the shooting. a har tford county woman pretended to be sick to scam money from her friends and coworkers. most of the cash was collected at an elementary school. >> reporter: bakerfield elementary in aberdine was closed for the holiday, but when the school opens next week, one workers will face fraud. she told workers she had cancer. coworkers stepped in to pay for her rent even plane tickets.

but this week one of the coworkers became suspicious and turned to police. in the police report, during the summer the woman told coworkers that the cancer has progressed to stage four and spread to her lungs and that she had only a 15% chance of survival. the coworkers sprung into action again this time with a fundraiser collecting about $10,000. >> it was identified to the sheriff's office from the victim that these type of activities were happening to help raise money for this coworker that alleged she had cancer. >> that's not something to play with. >> reporter: angel valentine is a former student at bakerfield. >> i am surprised but, a lot of people do a lot of things to get money nowadays. >> reporter: police are still in the early stages of this investigation, as a result, no charges have been filed yet. in aberdine, i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> police are not releasing the identity of the victim because

charges are still pending. two federal agents say that enfamile does not contain deadly bacteria. bacteria was not found in the formula. verizon is ditching a controversial new fee. the $2 charge for paying bills online or by phone was going to start next month. the news brought about major backlash including an online petition that had 95,000 signatures. verizon was hoping to steer people to automatic credit cards. it's not break out the shorts weather but a record heat wave hits a spike. the temperature at the south pole turned to 9.9 degrees making it their warmest day there on record.

an unusual wind pattern brought about these warmer than normal conditions. however didn't last very long, temperatures quickly dropped back to the normal 15 below. nine degrees, you know it could become a vacation spot. >> yes. >> it is beautiful there. >> it's amazing. >> i will take the weather we had today. it was beautiful. >> way above average. let the sun come out for a little bit. enjoy this weekend if you like. we do have big changes coming next week. >> it is winter. >> and we're about to start january. >> so not expected i guess. this is where we stopped out in the 50s -- we topped out in the 50s. right now we're at the average high for this time of year. 30s out to the west, 50 degrees in ocean city, even closer you can see a range from 42 in columbia and 49 in dc. the winds in some cases are

light. the overall wind power is from the south. it's going to pick up tomorrow. that's going to keep the mild air around for another day or so before we see those changes. take a look. this is one of the reasons for the changes coming. this is really going to bring a huge warm up. before we get to that let's deal with this one. a couple of showers tonight into tomorrow. this is not a big storm system. notice the southern edge of this here, really keepsbreaking up. could swing into a few showers. it'll be gone by the new year's festivity, that's the good news. it'll be gone. this one sunday night into monday, this one doesn't have a whole lot of moisture with it but we are really going to notice the drastic change in temperature that is follow it. so we'll say those numbers in the moment. out in the water, small craft advisory with those winds picking out of the south.

a shower tonight into tomorrow. tomorrow we go back up to 56 degrees, so still way above average. that front gets out of here tomorrow night. we stay above average on sunday then comes that second front. when that comes through, take a look how these temperatures drop. we're down to 42 for our high on sunday. tuesday and wednesday our highs are only in the 30s, we could go down to the teens. during this time, a chance for flurries all the way down to baltimore with that. >> bernadette thank you. coming up next in sports, the injured players who will be ready to play against the bengals and which ones are still sidelined. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

all systems are a go for a new year's eve. ball drop at time square, the giant light switch was lifted

and the dress rehearsal took place today. the sphere has 2,600 crystals. more than a million people are expected to be on hand to watch the ball's one minute journey. a little village gets a brand new church and it is built out of snow. warm weather pushed back the opening but the architect was able to finish his masterpiece. the snow church is 65 feet long and has a 50-foot power. the church seats 200 people but only 40 were allowed in you know because there's a fear too many people may raise the temperature and melt the church. stay with us, we'll be right ,,,,
