break in the case possible suspect dozens of fire bombings across los angeles. hello, mary and quay are off today city of angels on edge, as reported from west hollywood, police announced, a suspect is in custody. >> reporter: los angeles police arrested this man in connection with more than 50 suspicious car fires set in less than a week. including about a dozen new blazes overnight. >> that person is being interrogated, there have been no fires since we detained this individual. >> the unidentified man was picked up this morning in los angeles, a minivan with canadian license plates was towed away the driver resembled a person of interest seen in a video tape, released by the

multiagency, arson task force but authorities are not ready to declare the crime solved. >> our task force is continuing, to work around the clock our detectives have hundreds of clues, leads, dozens of people left to interview. >> reporter: sudden police released surveillance video of a possible suspect and asked for the public's help finding him. >> police will not saw how the fires were started or what evidence was collected at the crime scenes. >> reporter: juan lopez said he found some device under his car but failed to ignite. >> over here, i see the little container right there, under the car. >> reporter: damage estimates are topping $2 million no resported civilian injuries from any of the fires. reward for information in the case stands at $60,000. arson is not suspected in a large fire here in baltimore more than a dozen people are

now, first in weather, complete forecast and first warning of severe weather. it is january, it is supposed to be cooler, so we are going to adjust and enjoy. >> it is colder, january arrived and here comes the colder weather on cue. along with the colder air, though, we have a couple snow showers out there. first warning doppler radar this is not a huge event at all but the gusty winds connected with the lakes a few snow showerflurries because of that, all coming down from the northwest, scattered about, moving quickly and they will pass along very quickly, so you may see a few flurries that is about it. we had sunshine mix being clouds as we move through -- mixing with clouds as we move through the first part of the day. a couple snow showers coming

down out of those clouds, the winds are up, 10 to 20 miles per hour gusts higher than that, here is our current wind gusts, almost 30 miles per hour in dc, 22 in baltimore here, the other thing, with these gusty winds and northwest wind coming in, on the western sides of the slope out west a few, inches of snow piling up because of that a winter storm warning is in effect for the rest of us, flurries we were talking about and colder air temperatures are dropping, 38 degrees baltimore, that is it, 40 in dc take a look at this compared to yesterday at this time, 15 to 20 degrees cooler, except for oakland almost 30 degrees colder, high on the day, 46 degrees, that was at midnight, dropping a few degrees, this high happened awhile ago so above average for the next two days, going to be below average, because the cold air will continue to move our direction before we peek out with number -- peak out with numberthen it moves on.

pinkston has more. >> reporter: a body believed to be suspected gunman, benjamin barnes has been found at mount rainier, national park. >> a body has been spotted from the air in a drainage. >> reporter: teams are making their way to the location. >> the area above the falls is rugged it is tough going if someone was out walking around in there. >> reporter: dozens of officers have been scouring the area for the 24-year-old suspect who was an iraq war veteran and may have been suffering from post traumatic stress disorder barnes shot and killed park rannenner, margaret anderson early sunday morn -- mangers margaret anderson early sunday morning when she tried to stop him from coming into the park. >> she didn't have a chance. >> reporter: officers exchanged fire with barnes but he escaped into the park on foot police found weapons and body armour inside his car they think barnes who had survival skills came to the national park to hide out after a new years eve shooting near seattle. barnes was wanted for questioning in a house party

shooting that left four people wounded. >> mount rainier park was shut down, authorities escorted 125 visitors from the grounds, more than 200 officers were involved in the search, tracking barnes on foot, and using an airplane with sensors that can detect body heat. randall pinkston wjz eyewitness news. >> barnes had a child and was involved in a custody dispute earlier this year. >> remarkable milestone for baltimore city police as they close out last year with a huge drop in the murder rate. andrea. >> reporter: denise the city ended 2011 with its lowest murder rate in more than 30 years city police say 196 homicides, were recorded last year, that is the lowest number in the city since 1978, baltimore's highest murder rate to date was recorded back in 1993, when 353 people were killed, the drops extend an overall downward trend in gun violence here, since 2007.

leaders say there is still room for improvement, according to the baltimore sun, the department saw just 46% of last year's murders, that is one of the lowest clearance rates on record. denise. >> thank you andrea. despite the drop baltimore still has one of the highest murder rates in the country along with detroit, new orleans, and st. louis. well, a tragic start to the new year in bethesda after two people are killed in an early morning car accident, more on the investigation. >> reporter: five people were inside this white suv when investigators say the driver lost control, went through a fence and crashed into a tree, killing two passengers, it happened just before 3:00 a.m., new years day, on jones bridge road near lancaster drive in bethesda. >> i was in bed then i heard like screeching, brakes, and then i heard like bang you know like the crumpling of metal i was thinking oh i my gosh i hope no one gets hurt. >> reporter: montgomery county

his first tv interview. he wants to do anything hectobring his 20 month old daughter back. he reported her missing from his home in waterville maine, police have declared the disappearence a crime. he released two previous statements today is the first time he pled publicly for her safe return. a 12-year-old boy shot in the head new years eve tampa florida he was hit by a falling bullet, shot in celebration of the new year the bullet went through the top of his head and got lodged in his cheek he is currently in critical condition in hospital, but his father said he is not giving up hope. some body just put a stop on him he ain't going to give up. he is going to grow up and be a better man than what i am. >> detectives are looking for the person responsible they say the shot could have been fired from miles away. firearm background checks
