facility. >> reporter: the ravens have accomplished quite a bit. they secured a home play off game but the by product of their success that means the most to the players right now is the extra rest that they get for the play offs with that bye week. >> rice will take it all the way, touchdown ravens 70 yards. >> reporter: the last of 16 hard fought regular season games is the ravens crowning achievement for now. ray rice broke free for two long touchdown runs and a critical win in the road at cincinnati. the second rice td proved to be the colleger, capping a victory. a 12-4 record. a division title. home field in the play offs and a bye week to rest. >> winning the game was huge but this week is going to be huge. we know what a bye week does. it gets people healthy. need less to say we came into this game a little banged up.

but, when you get that bye week we're going to come back full strength. and the ravens at full strength is a great team. >> reporter: true greatness is determined at play off time and the ravens are in the postseason for the fourth straight year. that's the longest current play off streak in the league. the hope and expectation is that they take it all the way to the super bowl this year. >> every year is special, you know and i think this year takes on a different character probably for the ravens in the last three years. but right now this is the most special, this is the one we're in. this is the one we have more high hopes for. >> reporter: harbaugh mentioned three key players that they're dealing with injuries. the one they have concerned for is janiel mcclain. how do you prepare for a game that you don't know who you're

nearly rang in the new year. the 43-year-old man got lost in gamble state park near fredrick. tonight derek valcourt explains how simple technology helped save his life. >> reporter: this may look like just a blank white screen but it's actually an app that turns an iphone into a flashlight and it saved one man from spending new year's eve lost on the mountain. with miles and miles of trails, gambrel staid park is an ideal place for hikers. casick and his dog boo went for a hike. he started on the black trail, switched to the yellow trail but ended up on a blue trail. >> at what point did you realize you were lost. >> reporter: i told my wife i wasn't lost, but i guess i was. >> reporter: casick still had

his iphone signal and enough battery life. >> i >> reporter: casick was able to wave his phone in the air, the rescuers spotted the light and sent in help. >> what lessons do you take away from this? >> flashlight in the bag, you always have to be ready. >> reporter: casick is thankful he was rescued and still was able to attend the new year's party. the ordeal did not stop him from hiking, he came out and hiked again sunday morning and plans to come again.

derek valcourt. >> long time hikers say this is a perfect example to always take a cell phone with you on long hikes and make sure someone knows where you are hiking. tonight police are looking for the shooter, andrea fujihi is live in the newsroom. >> reporter: vick police say they found the teen lying on the street with wounds to his hands, arms and torso. he was found here on oakland avenue just before 6:00 last night. the 13-year-old was rushed to a hospital in critical but stable condition. he is expected to survive. so far police have no suspects or a motive, vic. >> andrea, thank you. anyone with a motive is asked to call detectives. the city ended the year with fewer than 200 murders but did see increases in some types of crime. wjz is live at city police headquarters, mike hellgren breaks down the numbers and what they mean, mike. >> reporter: here's the big number. police made 25,000 fewer arrests last year. the charges are more likely to

stick and they say they are continuing to target repeat violent offenders. crime tape and bullet markers played a big part in baltimore this year. the number of murders marched toward 400 a year in the 1990s. but violent crime has dropped in recent years and in 2011 the city had 196 murders, the lowest number since 1977. >> you think it's a significant threshold to be below 200? >> for this city yeah. for sure. >> we see a lot of gunshots, and it's a lot more quiet now. >> reporter: but not everyone is feeling safer. greene has lived in baltimore her entire life. >> i think it's the same basically. i really do. you have to try to protect everybody at the same time. >> until people can look out their window and from the place that they live and feel that sense of security, we haven't gotten the job done. >> reporter: the city says

violent crime was down 6%. murders down 12% last year. but the news isn't all good. total crime is actually up 1%. fueled by an increased in property crime up 4%, incidents like car break-ins. >> if you would give the teenagers and the young adults something to do, they don't have time to get into crimes. >> reporter: the commissioner says he remains focused to getting guns off the street. hoping to achieve more reductions in this new year. illegal guns coming into the city are coming from north carolina and that is a pipeline they want to close this year. back to you denise. >> thank you, mike. many u.s. cities are recording lower murder rates including washington, d.c. which saw 108 murders in 2011. an arsonist spree may be

over after four days and nearly 50 car fires, police arrest a suspect. lauren has the latest for wjz from los angeles. >> reporter: investigators arrest this man for suspicious car fires. including about a dozen new blazes overnight. >> that person is being interrogated. there's been no fires since we detained this individual. >> reporter: the man was picked up this morning. a mini van with canadian license plates was towed away. >> the driver resembled a person of interest seen in a surveillance tape seen by the task force. >> reporter: but the task force is not ready to close the case. >> we have hundreds of clues, dozens of leads and hundreds of people left to interview. >> reporter: on sunday, police released a surveillance video and asked the public for help in finding the suspect.

are out of their household tonight. >> reporter: the new year's morning fire went to three alarms because it was spreading from house to house in camden. >> first house on the street there was a lot of black smoke coming in the house. >> firefighters had to cut a trench in quite a number of homes to cut off the spread of the fire. >> reporter: the fire spread on a common piece of row house architecture, similar to crown molding inside homes. >> it really hits home when you can actually see the fire traveling from house to house. >> reporter: especially when it's your house that burned. five of those homes so severely damaged they had been condemned by city building inspectors. >> second floor is demolished. the first floor is all smoke damage. >> reporter: contractors had begun repair work. the home where the fire started had just had roof work done

hours before the blaze began. >> but whether or not that's the direct culprit for the cause of the fire we don't know at this point. >> reporter: even though homes had been winterized and had repairs done before the fire, the homes will remain condemned. >> where do you live for three or four months and feel comfortable? there's nothing like going home. >> according to the fire department, roughly a dozen people escaped the fire. the only injury was a twisted angle suffered by a firefighters. in tonight's health watch. getting good grades could be tied to physical activity. researchers in the netherlands observed three studies and find strong evidence of a relationship between physical activity and academic performance. more studies are needed to figure out how much exercise will produce learning benefits. holiday vacation ended early for many maryland students though it's a federal

holiday. our county st. maries and charles county public schools were open. as andrea fujii explains it wasn't without some opposition. after more than a week off, howard county students including those at cradle rock are back to the ground. everyone though most their peers in other counties and the cities are still on vacation. >> i was kind of jealous that everybody was sleeping and i had to get up and go to school. >> reporter: besides students, some parents off for the holidays questioned the decision. >> we expected everyone to have the holiday tomorrow. my entire family was surprised they had to go to school early. >> reporter: so the schools sent out an explanation. january2nd is a federal holiday but they say it's not a required holiday for maryland county schools. the letter went on to say that in approving the 2011-12

calendar the board of education decided to open school on the january 2nd to close school as soon as possible. >> it's sort of mixed reviews but everybody is smiling and back to work. >> reporter: for many parents who have the day off. having their kids at school was a holiday in itself. >> when they go to school you get time to finish everything that you couldn't finish. some private schooled also opened today. starting tomorrow all public schools are back in class. >> did you see the smiles on the faces of those parents as this were taking the kids back to school. >> it was a holiday. eight of the nations 10 largest school systems gave students the day off. >> happy new year to everybody out there. we had a really mild one. great for the fireworks. >> perfect. >> they are gorgeous.

right now as we begin the feeling of winter. finally getting here. >> yeah and it's okay. it's time. we're ready. >> okay, yeah. it's coming, we're going to feel it especially the next couple of days. it's been a really mild holiday weekend before we get into this cold weather. here's what we're dealing with right now. we had a few flurries flying around out there right now. nothing that intense expect for we -- western maryland. out west we've seen a few inches piling up on some of the mountain tops out there. especially west facing slopes. snow showers and flurries for that snow accumulating. great for all the ski resorts and everyone planning the ski trips out there. they're coming some what down tonight. winds are gusting at 28 miles

per hour and they're bringing in colder air. compared to yesterday at this time we are 15 to 20 degrees colder. so yes the chill is starting to settle in. and it's getting colder the next few days because this is what's moving our way. in these deep purples it's single digits. we're not going to get that cold here but that's the air that's moving in our direction. the cold air continues to come in our direction. by wednesday what happens the winds shut off their connection from the west and from the north that shuts off the bleeding of cold air. temperatures will continue to rebound as we get into the second part of the week. so over all we have small craft advisories in effect through tuesday. then they'll start to shift a little bit here. tonight 24 degrees for our low. it's going to be a cold one. few flurries still possible. windy and windy again tomorrow. maybe flurries flying around out there.

era da falls. >> reporter: teams are now making their way to the location. >> it's pretty tough going if someone was out walking around in there. >> reporter: dozens of officers have been scouring the area for the 24-year-old suspect who was an iraq war veteran and may have been suffering of post- traumatic syndrome. >> he came out and opened fire on her inside of her car and put multiple rounds inside of her car. and she didn't have a chance. >> reporter: officers exchanged fire with barnes but he escaped into the woods on foot. police found weapons and body armour inside his car. they think barnes who had survival skills came to the national park to hide out after a new year's eve shooting near seattle. barnes was wanted for questioning in a house party shooting that left four people wounded. mount reinier park was shut

down. authorities escorted visitors from the ground. nearly 500 officers were involved in the search. randall pinkston. within an hour, authorities did identify the body as barnes. he had a son and was involved in a custody dispute. a tragic start to the new year in bethesda, two people were killed in an early morning car accident. monique griego reports. >> reporter: it happened just before 3:00 a.m. new year's day on jones bridge

road near ran -- lancaster drive in bethesda. >> i was in bed and i heard screeching brakes then crumbling metal. i was thinking oh my god i hoeb no one gets hurt -- i hope no one gets hurt. >> reporter: people who live near jones bridge roads say it's no stranger to fatal wrecks. >> the curves are deceiving because they don't look severe but they throw drivers off. and they lose control of the car if they're going a little too fast. >> reporter: now police are trying to piece together what would have caused such a horrific crash. >> speed, alcohol related, distracted, all those could be factors in any collision and they are certainly looked at in every fatal collision. but i can't speak about the specifics on this one. >> reporter: monique griego.

>> the other two passengers had less serious injuries. a montgomery county couple is hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk. john wayland and his wife dorothy waylan was struck when the car left the roadway. it happened sunday morning. both are in the hospital tonight with life threatening injuries. the driver did stop after the crash and police are investigating. presidential hopefuls make their final push. daniel nottingham reports. santorum supporters peer through windows to catch a glimpse of the presidential hopeful. >> be bold, step forward, you're leading, you're casting the first vote. >> reporter: he comes in third but within distance of romney and paul. >> we are not looking for a

others are working to reach the undecided voters in the last leg of the race. the democrats are also in iowa this week to challenge the republican field. party leaders are targeting mitt romney. during the cold winter months, people generally spend more time indoors in closer proximity of friends and family in warmer conditions, perfect conditions to spread the flu. now the number of cases is building. >> reporter: maryland is reporting one confirmed case of the flu and across the country 97 cases have been tracked. though most cases go untracked and unreported. as cbmc walter hetenger says don't wait too long to see a doctor. >> first of all you're going to get some idea that the flu is around because you're going to get it from somebody in most cases. so you know when other people get sick and you start to get sick, that's probably the best time, in that first 48 hours because that's when he can

prescribe medication. >> reporter: if seen within that time there are medicine that is can actually battle the flu not just battle the symptoms. >> if you get the fever and the body aches, really the most characteristic part of the flu. >> reporter: sick or not we all should cover our mouths or nose when we cough or sneeze. >> prevention could be something as obvious as during the flu season, simply try not to tush your eyes or mouth -- touch your eyes or mouth. >> a flu vaccine is recommended. >> that lowers the duration of flu and some of the symptoms. >> reporter: though the number of cases is still low, they have doubled in the past month. in townsend, mike schuh. government figures show that traditionally january and february are the worse months for outbreaks of the flu. we've experienced that here for a number of years.

iran test fires what it calls a nuclear missile. the show of force appears to be iran's response to new sanctions and criticism of its oil and nuclear programs. >> reporter: iran test fired a new cruise missile monday, one that tehran is capable of destroys cruise ships. the cruise missile is called capable. this is a second test in as many days. iran's navy chief says it proves iran is in complete control of the slate of hormuz. that stretch of water is strategically important. a leading iranian lawmaker says the country's tphaáfl drills which end tuesday are practice in case iran decides to shut

for iran as well. the trial for mubarack resumes. the 83-year-old is wheeled in. he's accused of the killings of hundreds of protesters. new year's celebratory gunfire accidentally hitted a 12-year-old boy in tampa florida. diego duran was hit by a bullet. the bullet went through the top of the man's head and became lodged in his cheek. diego's father is sure he will recover. >> he's a man in the making. somebody just put a stop on him. but he ain't going to give up. he's going to grow up and be a better man than what i am. >> reporter: detectives are searching for the person responsible. they say it is possible the

gunshot was fired from miles away. a squirrel monkey is returned to the san francisco zoo two days after he was stolen. the 17-year-old monkey named banana sam was taken after someone cut holes in the exhibit's mesh fence. a man found sam in the bushes about a mile from the zoo. tonight police are still working to find out who stole the monkey. it won't be very hard to tell these twins apart because they were born in different years in florida. jena was borned at 11:59 new year's eve 2011. after the ball dropped her sister lea arrived. the twin's perfect timing earned them a couple of honors, they were the first and last baby born this year for the county. and you heard their father say, they are healthy. >> and jena you're a year older. >> yeah. it's a last minute scramble for undecided voters on the day before the iowa caucuses. we asked rick santorum if ,,,,
