hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> we are talking about winter weather. it's returning to maryland. and it is a shock to the system, after the warm december that we've had, on and off light flurries fell in some parts of central maryland throughout most of the day. in rowland park, you can hear the whipping winds. and they get out of that cold. a winter storm warning is in effect until 7:00 tonight. that is western maryland. you can see from the m-dot camera, the roads on 68 on savage mountain are covered in snow. meteorologist bernadette woods is in the first warning weather center, with more on just how cold it got today. hi, bern. >> hello, mary. and yes, hello january. let's show you first warning doppler radar. all of the snow showers coming

baltimore county schools to extend christmas vacation by at least one day. alex demetrick is live in the newsroom with more on how the break is helping neighbors and one neighbor hospital -- nearby hospital. >> the break in one county is causing water issues there, the city and county. sky eye chopper 13 is in baltimore county. the water is no longer flowing through the 36-inch main, while crews work to repair the break. violetville elementary, lansdowne high, and arbutus middle school. because they had no water. st. agnes. if it decreases further, the hospital will lose its heat. >> wjz is keeping an eye on the repairs. we'll keep you updated at 5:00 and 6:00. mount rainier. graham johnson has the latest on the murder of a beloved park ranger. >> reporter: national park rangers announced the end of a

manhunt. >> it was, indeed, the deceased, primary suspect in this killing. >> reporter: benjamin colton barnes, suspected of gunning down ranger margaret anderson, found dead in paradise creek. in the end, police didn't take them out. it appears the cold weather killed him. >> he was wearing a t-shirt, pair of jeans and one tennis shoe. and that was it. >> reporter: investigators say the 24-year-old iraq war veteran shot and killed anderson as she tried to stop him after he blew through a checkpoint for tire chains. investigators say barnes tried to elude tactical teams by running through creeks and traveling through circles. a plane spotted barnes' body, facedown in the creek. the snow banks around him, several feet deep. he wasn't far from where ranger anderson died. >> very dedicated to the job.

look at that. 30 homes in the area were evacuated. no one was hurt. no cause on what started the explosion. a snowstorm creates a scary situation for a plane landing at an ohio airport. it was a smooth landing. but when the plane started to turn, it got stuck and had to go into the crass grass. -- grass. those expecting to fly out were snowed in for the night. it is a dramatic and uplifting story of caring and action from utah. stella has more on some good samaritans who jumped into frigid water to rescue three children trapped in a car. >> this photo shows what the good samaritan rescuers were dealing with. a family's car had flipped over into the icy river. the dead inside the submerged car escaped.

his pleas for help, left unanswered by dozens of passersby. two were heading up to beaver mountain to ski. >> i looked down and i could see a car upside down in the river. >> morgan didn't hesitate. >> he said, let's go, boys. he jumped in and then again, a large mass of people followed him in. >> into the waist-deep freezing- cold waters they went to try to save lives. morgan said a young girl tried to climb out of the window. >> the man next to me started yelling, my son, my son, next to me in the car. and i looked in and i could see this boy upside-down in the water. >> reporter: morgan said the men started yelling "over" and against all odds in a strong river current, they flipped over the car. morgan spotted the enjoy and started applying compressions because he couldn't get in. >> all of a sudden, aningle

stuck a knife in. and i pulled the boy out. >> morgan handed the boy to his son. and they tried to revive him with no results. >> then started doing the heimlich. by making a funny noise. the carlsons are relieved and know something indescribable happened in the logan river on this new year's eve. >> an army like that cannot be defeated. >> several elements just came together, possibly even miracle. it was really what made the difference. >> reporter: and that was stella turkhill reporting. police say one of the people were treated and released. the other two are still in the hospital but they're expected to be okay. a very happy start to the new year on wall street. s&p 500, up 20. and the nasdaq is up 44. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. the stocks rallied on the first trading day of the new year. the dow jones industrial average jumped 200 points in the first minutes of trading on encouraging economic news. u.s. manufacturing grew in december as the fastest pace in six months. and construction spending hit its highest level since june. manufacturing in china and india, also picked up late last year. but analysts say they will likely drive the debt markets over the coming months. greece is warning it may have to leave the euro zone if it doesent find the bailout. oil prices jumped more than $102 a barrel, after iran threatened to close the street. the threats are in retaliation over an economic sanction.

one-sixth of the world's oil passes through that. and city bank can use the rewards on facebook. it allows users to combine their points to choose from millions of awards from travel to other things. it lets customers transfer points from one another to a home page. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. officials at the san francisco zoo are beefing up security as joe vaz questions report -- vasquez reports. the move comes after someone breaks in and steals a monkey. >> while banana sam gets comfortable back home at the san francisco zoo, his zookeepers are ramping up security. they tell us they have doubled the number of guards for the overnight hours. meanwhile, they're still trying to figure out how it could happen. how someone could break through an exterior of the fence. and take off with banana sam.

>> how does that happen? >> right. we are a 99-acre facility. we're a 99-acre park. so when it comes to an act of vandalism and an act of a motivated criminal to me. if someone is motivated to commit a crime, they're going to do it. >> the thieves then cut two holes. >> reporter: now securing its legendary status, with this animated video from taiwan. the same folks are now giving us a dramatic reenact. of -- reenactment of the monkey theft. someone claims to have spotted banana sam at durham grove. he said he was able to quickly lure banana sam into his backpack. then he called cops. but then they called mike sugerman and said the story seems implausible. and the finder has not been ruled as a suspect himself.

oh, those are like slight snow clouds, aren't they? >> they are. >> more scientific meteorological. >> that's exactly where they are. >> a few rounds of us building up. snow coming out of them. kind of like the showers we see during the summer, when they are just scattered about. they sort of rain themselves down. we'll show you first warning doppler radar. they're just scattered about the state. they are coming on gusty northwest winds, gusting back to the great lakes. this is a lake-effect event. it's making its way down to the bay. and that's what we're seeing and will see until the sun sets. a few flurries possible until this evening. but things will start to die down. earlier, we had that sun. that gave way to the clouds

building up. and eventually, the scattered snow showers and flurries. out west, still a winter storm warning in effect until 7:00 tonight. a few inches piling up on the western slopes. we showed you some shots earlier and we will throughout the newscast here. but there's definitely snow coming down in western maryland. great for the ski resorts. here are the winds we were talking about. they have been gusting. keeping old air in place even colder than it was yesterday. 20 degrees in baltimore. look at these 20s all the way to the eastern shore. 30s. but out in the mountains, 14 degrees now in oakland. and when you factor in the winds, it feels like 2 degrees in oakland, 9 in hagerstown. and here in baltimore, only 14 degrees. so we topped out so far today at 32. just at freezing. you can see, we have been way above this average, in the 50s to near 60 degrees. today, we're way below it at 32 degrees for our high. and we're going to stay below at least through tomorrow. what will happen after that, though? the connection with the lakes is going to be broken during

hailed a hero, a part-time deputy catches a suspect in a string of arson attacks. we're learning more now about the man believed to be responsible for the blazes. >> arson suspect, harry burkhart is behind bars, thanks to a tip from a federal official and work from a part- time sheriff's deputy. >> i'm ecstatic that law enforcement gets a chance to shine a little bit. >> he makes a dollar a year issue -- as a reserve deputy. he was on duty when he spotted a minivan belonging to burkhart. >> i take a lot of pride in the city, in the department. >> reporter: this sits virtually in the middle of where all the fires were set. the 24-year-old german nationalist is suspected of starting 54 fires in the last few days. police won't discuss a motive, but burkhart's neighbor says he was in a dispute with federal officials over his mother's

immigration status. >> literally thousands of law enforcement officials had the information when they needed to have it, and that's what led to this arrest. >> reporter: police believe burkhart acted alone but are still investigating. in west hollywood, wjz eyewitness news. >> damage estimates top $3 million. >> an off-duty federal agent who died trying to stop a robbery. >> atf agent john capano was shot saturday in new york while drugling with an -- struggling with an agent. y a retired officer and off- duty officer ran to the scene and saw the skirmish between capano ask the suspect. the retired officer shot capano, while the off-duty officer shot the suspect. capano's funeral is set for friday. >> armed robberies at pharmacies in the u.s. are on

the rise. in 2006, 380 holdups were recorded, while 686 were in 2010. murder mystery. a woman's body is discovered. alison harmelin reports, it's the same place the royal family rang in the new year. >> reporter: the royal family's country estate is a crime scene. police are combing the crime scene, after evidence that a dog walker's body was found on new year's day. >> i think the circumstances show she is probably the victim of murder. >> reporter: the remains were found just three miles from queen elizabeth's estate, where the royals spent the holiday. authorities have not released details about the victim or how she died. >> we really need to wait before we know any details. >> reporter: parts of the sprawling estate are open to the public. the dog walker spotted the remains on the eastern edge of

the property. police said the body had been there for sometime. they're reopening cold cases to see if they can dig up a lead. >> so you will be continuing inquiries to establish a, who she is, and b, how she came to be here, and who is responsible for being here. >> reporter: the discovery came just as the royal family was marking prince william's recovery. the queen's husband made his first appearance on new year's. police waited a day to inform the royals about the incident on new year's day, which for now holds more questions than answers. >> british monarchs have used this as a private getaway since the 1800s. well, winter has finally arrived in maryland. here's a look at the western part of the state. substantial snowfall there.

an army soldier accused of having explosives in this carry- on luggage said he didn't notice any while in the packaging. he and his family were heading back home to north carolina, seen in this video, after visiting relatives in texas. that's where tsa agents spotted the explosives. atwater remains behind bars. a robbery suspect is caught on tape. police in laurel hope someone recognizes this man. he's wanted in connection to an armed robbery at the rugged warehouse on friday afternoon. police say he threatened a clerk with a gun and took off with cash. anyone with information is asked to call metro crimestoppers. scientists are getting closer to determining whether people with mild dementia symptoms are at risk for alzheimer's. mary is in the newsroom with moreon -- more on a promising new study. >> reporter: a new study suggests that biomarkers could predict who will develop alzheimer's disease. the patients tested had mild

memory problems and were tracked over 12 years. a spinal tap protects the cushion. the test proves successful, 90% of the time, knowing which patient with mild cognitive appearance. the researchers are definitely looking for a cure. denise? >> as scientists gain more insight, aging adults struggle with whether or not they want to know their risk. a 40-car pileup shuts down. it happened in crittendon early monday morning. officials say all injuries were minor. the road was closed for four hours. police believe a sudden snowstorm may be to blame. let's check in on the roads around here with kristy breslin. wjz traffic control. >> well, the wind is definitely going to whip you around out there. we have warnings on all of the area bridges. as far as accidents go, northbound 295, an accident blocking the left-hand lane, at 195.

preparing to go on trial for another woman's murder in peru. andrea fujii is live in the newsroom. >> reporter: joran van der sloot has already admitted to killing that woman inside a hotel woman -- room. van der sloot said he never planned on killing the 21-year- old but got carried away during an argument. the woman allegedly found information leading to the holloway disappearance. peruvian police found the body on the fifth anniversary of holloway's disappearance. vic, back to you. >> van der sloot's trial begins on friday. he faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. a shocking crime, caught on tape. new york police say a man fire- bombed homes and worship centers under the cover of night. and they think the culprit is targeting muslim americans. sean hennessey has the story.

questioning a person of interest in this case. investigators say they tracked him down after has car was spotted at the scene of at least two attacks, but no arrests have been made. it was an amazing story of survival out of australia. a little girl is -- has a story. michaela mcelvoy has cuts and bruises all over her body. >> very, very scared. i thought i was going to die. all i could see was gray, gray, gray. >> she can't stop thinking about the frightening attack on new year's day. the family were on holiday. michaela was playing near a pack of kangaroos. when one went for her. >> it jumped on her back and started jumping up and jumping up on top of her and scratching her. >> reporter: the animal pinned her down. michaela's stepdad, mitch mcgovern jumped in to help.

children stranded. a paperwork problem keeps two girls from getting home by train. the 10-year-old and 15-year-old traveled to harrisburg to visit family. but when they tried to return home on an amtrak train, they could not. amtrak officials told the girl's father, they should never been allowed to get on the train without an adult. >> they basically stated that they were not able to fit her back on the train with her sister. and they canceled the ticket and refunded me the money. and i now have to find my own way to get them back home. >> amtrak says its policy for unaccompanied minors change november 1st. now children have to be 12 or older to ride without an adult. amtrak ended up making an exception so the girls could get home. first lady michelle obama shows off her acting skills. coming up here on entertain. tonight, only we can take you behind the scenes with first lady michelle obama, acting and dancing on tv.

welcome back, everybody. okay. we've seen the snow showers cut down. still, the snow flurries and showers coming down from the west. but as the sun sets, this starts to die down. we'll switch did over to you and show you earlier, we had the sunshine. giving way to the clouds building up. but eventually, with all of the snow showers coming out of

them, kind of like in the summer when we have the regular showers coming out. but as the sun died down, also like the summer. everything else is going to start to die down. winds have been out of the northwest. and on the western slopes, we have a lot of snow piling up. a few inches here. that's why there's a wibilitier storm warning. -- winter storm warning. some have gotten close to 12 inches of snow out of this. these are the winds. they have been keeping the cold air around. we're 20 in the metro region. but when you factor in the winds, it feels like 14 in baltimore. 2 degrees now in oakland. pretty incredible out there. swing, from way above average, earlier this week. and this weekend. to now way below average. that's where we're going to be again tomorrow. here's the setup. we have all of these showers coming down from the northwest because we still have that collection with the lakes. all of that in creating these snow showers. but tomorrow, that wind direction changes.

it stops that connection. so we're going to start to see the flurries start to die down. in addition to that, the cold air from the north will be shut off. it will take a day or two before it can sakele through. temperature -- cycle through. forecast comes together like this. on those waters, we have small craft advisories still in effect until 2:00 a.m. and the winds start to come down overnight. and so will the temperatures. 16 degrees for our low overnight. tomorrow, we only recover to about 34. as we head through the weeks, the weekday goes up and up and up toward the weekend. and wait until you see the five- day forecast. we're back in the 50s. >> great. >> wonderful. >> thank you. >> thank you, bernadette. still to come on wjz eyewitness news at 5:00. it's decision time. washington county. remembering a murdered park ranger. how she died. how she died. and how she's being honored. ,, @@
