with its coldest weather tonight at 11:00. roads are covered with snow. you're looking at one of the traffic cameras in garrett county. police report several accidents in that area. closer to baltimore, we have light snow with temperatures lingering below freezing or much of the day. anyone spending time outside should bundle up. let's go right now to meteorologist bernadette woods with more from first warning weather. bernadette. >> hello, kai, and everyone out there. yes, the cold air has arrived. we're going to start out with first warning doppler radar. we have snow showers. and they come in bands. we'll see a quick burst and then they move on. as that sun is starting to set. all of these are starting to die down. there are a couple of hours. switch it over and show you the gusty winds are bringing in that cold air. we've had wind gusts, 30 miles an hour this afternoon. these are the sustained winds. 26 is where we sit route now -- right now in baltimore. when you factor in the winds

together, it feels like 14 in baltimore. and two out in the mountains. now, want to take you back a couple of days here and show you the trend that we've had. it's been way above average. so we've gotten kind of used to the warm weather, thinking that was the norm. our normal is actually 42 degrees. that's the average for this time of year. today, we are down to 32 degrees so far for our high. and we're going to await confirmation. we'll wait for that swing, from 60 on saturday. from the new year's festivities. now we're down to 32 for our high. and we're heading down tonight. and we'll have that forecast coming up. >> wow. that's amazing. bernadette, thank you. stay with wjz 13 for coverage. for a look at live radar, log onto wjz.com. it is less than two weeks to go before the ravens take the field in their home play- off game. wjz is live at city hall. jessica kartalija explains how the team is making sure fans stay fired up. there's nfl music. that helps us to be fired up. >> i know.

water. st. agnes is also at risk of losing water because they have no heat due to low pressure. >> the hospital has a contingency plan in place. tragedy takes its toll here in maryland. a ranger murdered at mount rainier national park, spent several years working at the c&o canal. >> reporter: margaret anderson served four years in maryland and those rangers who worked with her, are reeling after her sudden death. >> reporter: she died on the job at mount rainier national park, in washington national state. police say a troubled iraq war vet on the run from the law, shot her in her patrol car. the stunning news traveled quickly to anderson's coworkerps at the c&o park. where rangers are wearing black bands around their badges in mourning. >> i think of her as one of the more consummate rangers that i've known in my plush career.

and most days, everybody comes home. and they're just fine. and then a day happens like sunday. >> reporter: anderson left behind two little girls and a husband, eric, who also worked as a ranger. the two got engaged here in maryland. >> it's a void that will never be replaced. >> it's a reality of our job. and you know, you face that every day. we can still come to work and get the best you can. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. teams searched rugged terrain for her accused killer, benjamin colton barnes, police found him dead in the ice and snow. >> when you lose a ranger, but when you work side by side, it's a var traumatic event for us. >> reporter: anderson also has ties to new jersey, where her father was a pastor. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> anderson's maryland post was her first with the national

park service. we're following some breaking news in baltimore county, where many drivers are running into dangerous conditions. let's go to sky eye chopper 13. captain mike perry is over the scene with details. >> hello, kai. we're up in cockeysville area of baltimore county. this is york road. and as you look, you can see some tough sledding, literally, as cars come down seven-mile hill. this is between, again, phoenix road, and thornton mill road. the roads are very, very icy up here, due to a very snow squall that just came through this area. now, baltimore county police and maryland state police have requested state highways to solve both i-83 and york road in the sparks area of baltimore county. we can see substantial backups, both directions in york road, in the sparks area, as state highways try to get some salt crews out here to address these very slippery conditions. some of these snow squalls that are moving through are moving

pretty moderate amounts of snow. you can see the snow cover up here, literally, there's about maybe a quarter inch to half inch. but 100 feet back behind me, there's no snow at all. so these areas of tough driving conditions, you can expect to encounter this evening in the northern areas of baltimore county. back to you on tv hill. >> okay. thank you. dramatic pictures, captain mike perry. an arrest is making headlines across the country. that's because the suspect is omar little. fans of hbo's hit show "the wire." police tell us, it's purely a coincidence. and this, omar little is facing a handgun charge. >> republican baltimore -- one baltimore community is on high alert after 15 break-ins. some occurred while the victims were sleeping in their homes. we have more on what the police

are trying to do to stop the burglaries. >> reporter: police say whoever is responsible is taking everything from electronics to jewelry to cash. but they're leaving very little behind about who they are. >> they pulled down the window and come in through there. >> reporter: 77-year-old jane grim is scared to go to bed, after she says someone broke into her house on north lucerne street, in the middle. night. t. >> five or six of them coming in and break in and go upstairs while i'm sleeping. >> reporter: grim says by the time she came downstairs, the burglar had escaped with a video game console and $300 in cash. >> i've been here 50 years. and it's the first time it's ever happened. >> reporter: but it's part of a rash of robberies. 16 cases have been reported in the past 28 days. >> reporter: police believe it is a group of kids behind the burglaries. so they've stepped up patrols to enforce the sta's nighttime curfew. in the past month, they've given out 90 citations.

>> just this morning, i spoke with three of my neighbors on the way out to work. about what they've heard, what's being done and what we can do. >> reporter: paul says he's seen crime go down. until now. with five of his neighbors among the victim, valdez wonders if he'll be next. >> what kind of -- in terms of what we're going to do about this. >> reporter: police aren't releasing any details about how the suspects are attacking. people who live here aren't ruling anything out. >> don't come out here. i have a big dog, a big one. and the kids will stay together. >> reporter: and at this point, police have no suspects at all. perhaps the only piece of relieving news in all of this, police do not believe the suspects are armed, when they go into these houses. we're live tonight in paterson park, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, weijia, thank you. if you have any information about these burglaries, police urge you to let them know about it quickly. still ahead on eyewitness news at 5:00, royal mystery.

it is a tough day for a baltimore county community. they came together to say goodbye to a beloved 13-year- old boy who died of cancer.

but what everyone will tell you about riley davis is that he smiled until the very end. >> reporter: riley davis lived only 13 years, but he never went a day without a smile, even through a four-year battle with leukemia. a teacher nicknamed him "sunny d.." >> he was unbelievable. i had a class mate make him a book and we called him super riley. because that's how he attacked the disease. he was just a fighter, a fighter, a fighter. >> reporter: riley was a fourth grader here at jacksonville elementary school, when he was first diagnosed with leukemia. >> they organized fundraisers. >> i think we did one huge banner and just wanted to be able to send it in to the hospital. we want it to be a happy place for him. >> reporter: and riley's classmates did something else

to support their friend. >> they all decided to shave their head in support of riley. >> it was another way kids could say, we feel your pain and we're walking this with you. >> reporter: a celebration of riley's life was held today. his teachers, friends and family all gathered to say goodbye. updating the breaking news in baltimore county, where icy conditions are causing major delays, let's check in with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. some pretty dramatic pictures that captain mike had, christy. >> absolutely. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene. york road at thorton mill road. very icy conditions. cars are just squeezing by. and it's really impacting the drive on the harrisburg expressway as well. if you're traveling on the harrisburg expressway, we're already looking at a 20-minute delay there. we're also looking at another 40 minutes in the southbound direction from belfast, up to the beltway in that direction. so it's definitely going to be a tricky drive for you if

you're in the phoenix area or up in sparks. definitely take your time, traveling in that area. as far as the rest of the region goes, we still have some accidents to watch out for. southbound 95 at mountain road. on the outer loop, an accident there, on perring parkway. other icy conditions reported. cromwell bridge, at copins avenue. and the west side inner loop, delays there from baltimore national pike to security boulevard. about 20 minutes to get through. other accidents include cranbrook road at snow drift court. bel air at frank ford. south paul at east biddle. and east monument at falls way. let's take a look. that is a look at the delay. northbound at the harrisburg expressway. you can see things are barely moving. expect at least 45 minutes to get through. this traffic report is brought to you by subway. introducing the new hot pastrami melt. it's freshly-baked bread. pickles, mustard.

only at subway. eat fresh. back to you. >> kristy, thank you. the trash is piling up at baltimore county neighborhoods, as some residents won't have their recycling picked up for three weeks. andrea fujii explains that with the holidays falling on monday, thousands are left with a smelly mess. there's a line to recycle at the dropoff center on warren road. >> it's a whole lot easier to put it in a paper bag and bring it up here. >> reporter: with the past two mondays holidays, baltimore county residents with recycling pickup were out of luck. >> we had to put everything out on the curb, then we realized, guess what, they're not picking up today. >> so folks like brian had to dispose of has plat on -- hazmat on their own, not waiting until next monday. they say this the first time the holiday schedules have stopped pickups. >> when there's a holiday, that means there's one fewer day to

pick up trash. and the trash has to have priority because of sanitary reasons. >> it has been piling up. it's the cans. i mean, and if you have a ravens' party, it's going to be bottles. >> reporter: but the county says the majority of residents will hold onto the recycling until pickup or take it to a recycling center like this. >> reporter: many residents say it's a small price to pay to stay green during the holidays. >> if i didn't do the recycling, i'd probably have two cans out there. >> and if you are one of those affected with a missed pickup, there are recycling dropoff centers open all week in whitemarsh, cockeysville and halethorpe. >> the county will begin curb side christmas tree recycling, next monday, through the 14th. >> we were just talking about the three hours, recycling, reduce, and reuse. and in a lot of those cases, we've actually kept some of our boxes to put away our christmas

things. it's really helpful. >> good idea. and we were saying with all of the building up of recycling. what can really help is if you break it down. it can make things a lot easier out there. onto the weather. sorry about that. this is what we've we've got going on. there are snow showers coming down from the northwest. there's another little batch over parkton and westminster right now. all of that is moving to the southeast. it's a quick burst. then it moves on. but the ground is very cold. some of it is laying on the ground and creating some issues out there in the evening commute. we'll have your forecast coming up when,,,,

welcome back, everybody. this band of snow showers coming down from the northwest. all part of a lake-effect event that has set up. we want to show you first warning doppler radar. we see the bands coming down from the northwest. this one in particular is the one you just saw from sky eye chopper 13. it's laying snow on the ground in the northern parts of the baltimore county. also a few flurries around towson. that also is moving off to the

southeast quickly. you can see there's a lot more, not that long ago. with the sun down, all of this is going to start to die down. we'll switch it over and show you, earlier, we had sunshine. that gave way to clouds building and eventually, snow showers coming out of the clouds. kind of like in the summer, when we see those pop-up showers. this is the same idea, getting that esctramoisture -- extra moisture from the lakes. in western parts of the state, that's where the snow has been really piling up. take a look at this. winter storm warnings still in effect for garrett and allegheny county. adam was checking out with a foot of snow on the ground. so for everyone planning the ski vacations, this is a good piece of news. now, out of the northwest, those are those gusty winds. look at all of these 20s. now, westward, we're seeing a lot of that snow pile being up. it is cold. when you factor that in, if feels -- it feels like minus 4. it is 16 degrees in ocean city. we topped out today. 32 degrees. way below the average.

after spending the last couple of days above that average. you definitely feel that chill out there. it is going to stay for another day or so before we see some improvement. here's the overall setup. here's the connection. the sun is setting. you can see most of this action starting to die down. then tomorrow, the winds turn around, so that connection will be shut off. temperatures still way below average, before they start to build up toward the weekend. and during the day tomorrow, there's another front that's going topaz by -- to pass by. maybe a few showers with it. not a whole lot. but that gets out of here as we head towards the weekend. forecast looks like this on the waters. you see the bay temperatures down to 44 degrees. small craft advisories in effect until 2:00 a.m. tonight, the winds are starting to die down. flurries also dying down. but so are those temperatures. look at that. 16 degrees overnight. some people, wouldn't be surprised out west, especially going to be in the single digits. temperatures do climb next few days. >> we have been spoiled. >> we have been.

it is 5:30. 26 degrees with some snow showers in places. good evening, everybody. thank you for staying with wjz, eyewitness news. we are following breaking news on the road negligence baltimore county. sky eye chopper 13 over major delays, caused by icy conditions and some snow. captain mike perry has an update for us. captain mike? >> headlighto -- hello, mary. we are in the sparks area. between thorton mill area, and sparks road. traffic in both the northbound and southbound direction, is being significantly hampered by icy conditions. now, we've seen state highway trucks begun salting north of this now. they're coming in a southerly direction. you see that there is any number of cars that are stranded here. they have now begun salting so that the road conditions should improve, just having traction on the salt will cause things to get a lot better here fairly quickly.

we see traffic also moving out on 83. on the hilly areas. the same conditions for the traffic, as they're finding these icy conditions throughout northern baltimore county. back to you. >> thank you. captain mike perry, reporting live. first warning weather coverage continues. meteorologist bernadette woods is tracking live doppler radar. let's get to live doppler radar. we'll show you the scattered snow showers across the state. they are very widespread. you can see sort of popcorn style. when they come down, it's a quick burst. but then they move on pretty quickly. however, temperatures are below freezing. that's where we saw some issues on the roads there. this is a batch making its way through right now. a lot of these are dying down. but they're not quite finished yet. it's going to be making its way into towson, perry hall, and eventually into this city and to the eastern shore. that's the same idea, with a few more of these out there. these are the winds that these

snow showers are riding. they're out of the northwest. they were gusting today. and keeping the cold air in place. 26 degrees in baltimore right now. look at everyone below freezing across the entire state. knowing you factor in that wind, makes it feel like 16 degrees outside. so not only is it cold. but feels even colder with the winds. we'll have the forecast coming up shortly. >> let's check in with kristy breslin, at wjz traffic control, for more of those weather-related delays. >> definitely having a major impact on the roadways. let's now take a live look at the harrisburg expressway. at the direction. we're looking at 45, minute delay from timonium to belfast. also in the southbound direction, cars are slowing down from belfast. also, as you can see, northbound 95, we'll go to our graphics there. we have some delays there, as you make your way to whitemarsh boulevard to gun powder falls. southbound 95, also very heavy conditions from whitemarsh boulevard to the 895 split.

and the beltway, being affected on the north side. outer loop, from 83. and bumper to bumper from harford to the jfx. we'll continue to keep you up to date. but definitely take your time on the roads out there. >> if you have photos of the cold weather or snow, we'd like to see them. send them to wjzwebalert@cbs.com. several highly traveled bridges in maryland will receive security upgrades. mike schuh reports on the government project meant to protect drivers from potential terror attacks. >> reporter: starting soon, all five of maryland's major bridges are going to get $11 million worth of surveillance upgrades. >> you may scarcely be aware that you're riding not only on a bridge but a terrorist target. >> this project will include cameras and surveillance, on the bridges as well as the approach roadways. >> reporter: the idea of being is a lot smarter and cheaper to

protect these crucial highway buildings than to rebuild. rebuild at a cost of nearly $2 billion and five years' disruption. >> reporter: these piers that hold up the bridges, well, they're fairly easy to secure on land. but a 2005 study paid for by the department of homeland security showed that the piers in the water, they are vulnerable to attack. >> reporter: below, a boat could ride up to one of these support piers in the water. but few people are here in the water line, to see and prevent a terrorist, as they try to blow up the bridge. so recently, dnr police installed its own eight-camera, eight-radar unit surveillance system, for boats under and around the bay bridge. this system will tie into the new mdta control room. >> this isn't a project that is an incident detection process project. so we will monitor the cameras, as well as respond to them as the alerts come off. >> reporter: not only will

cameras monitor the roadways of these vital aspects, they will work on the roads as well. >> it should take 18 months to complete. at the key bridge, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. back to you on tv hill. >> and the $11 million it will take to complete will be funded entirely on highway tolls at mdta crossings. >> an armed robbery suspect is caught on tape. police is searching for a man in this surveillance picture. detectives say he held up a gun. the man got away with cash. anyone with information should call police. in california, new details are emerging about the man suspected of setting dozens of fires. and the sheriff's deputy who caught him is being called a hero. edward lawrence is reporting from los angeles. >> arson suspect, terry burkhart is behind bars. >> i'm ecstatic that law

enforcement getting to shine a little bit. >> reporter: a full-time attorney makes a dollar a year as a reserve deputy. he was on duty early monday morning, when he spotted a minivan, belonging to burkhart. >> i take a lot of pride in the city. i take a lot of pride in the department. >> burkhart lives in this unassuming department in west holland. it sits in the middle of where all of the fires upper set. >> suspected of starting 50 fires over four days. police won't discuss the motive, but burkhart's neighbors say he was in a dispute with federal officials over his mother's immigration status. and officials involved in the case were the ones who recognized burkhart on surveillance tape. >> literally thousands had this. and that's what led to this arrest. >> reporter: police believe burkhart acted alone but are still investigating. in west hollywood, wjz eyewitness news. >> damage estimates from the fire now top $3 million.

the new york office building, where an advertising executive was crushed by an elevator, reopened for the first time today. suzanne hart was boarding the elevator from the first floor of her manhattan office when it began rising. the doors did not close. the 41-year-old was preb pressed between -- was pressed between the elevator and a shaft wall. the new year is off to an unpleasant start for britain's royal family. alison harmelin reports for wjz. police are investigating a murder mystery at the queen's estate. >> reporter: the royal family's country estate is a crime scene. police are combing the property for evidence, after a dog walker found a woman's body on new year's day. >> i think the circumstances indicate that she is probably the victim of murder. >> reporter: the remains were just three miles from queen elizabeth's retreat, where the royals spent the holidays and held a new year's celebration. authorities have not yet

released details about the victim or how she died. >> at this time, we really need to wait until it has been completed before we know anything. >> reporter: parts was sprawling estate are open to the public. the dog walker spotted the remains in the woods on the eastern edge of the property. police say the body had been there for sometime. they're reopening cold cases to see if they can dig up a lead. >> over this. to establish a, who she is, and b, how she came to be here, and who is responsible for her being here. >> reporter: the discovery came just as the royal family was marking prince william's recovery. the queen's husband made his first public appearance on new year's. police waited a day to inform the royals about the murder case, which for now, holds more questions than answers. alison harmelin, wjz eyewitness news. >> british monarchs have used the estate as a private

getaway, since the 1800s. more than 100 full-time staff work on the property. >> iran's recent military exercises in the persian gulf have sent the price of oil up. the price of a barrel of crude in asia jumped to $101. traders are nervous after eran's missile test -- iran's missile test. where 1/6th of the world's oil passes through. an iranian military commander is also issuing a threat to a u.s. navy warship. >> reporter: iranian military commanders are talking tough, saying a u.s. aircraft carrier that left the persian gulf should not come back. the white house says the bold warning shows iran is in a position of weakness. >> it's the latest round of iranian threats. and it's confirmation that teheran is under increasing pressure for its continued failures to live up to international obligations. >> reporter: this comes after
