primaries. and they're going to be real republicans voting. >> reporter: perry is focusing on south carolina to reenergize his campaign. in manchester randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> ron paul finished third in iowa but will head to and a half -- to new hampshire soon. an arctic blast pushes across maryland. it's hard to be covered in layers, hats and gloves. it is the coldest day since last february 9th. you can see the ice beginning to form in the patapsco river. and outside right now, it's a frosty afternoon, with mostly cloudy skies. meteorologist tim williams is here with more on just how bone- chilling cold it is. tim? >> bone-chilling, indeed, mary. temperatures have struggled to get up to freezing today. but the one thing we have less of today than yesterday is the wind. so that's actually a positive thing. looking at first warning doppler radar.

we've had light snow showers across the region. but the one thing we have in our favor is the dew point is very low. most of these snow showers are not making it to the ground. they're kind of evaporating and adding it to our cloud cover. let's talk about these temperatures and how cold it's been. past 24 hours, it's 13 degrees now, was the last -- the coldest. that was this morning at bwi marshall. 13 degrees was the reported cold temperature. temperatures starting off in the teens. and we're now up around 31 degrees. currently, 31. still right around freezing mode. and if you're at freezing, you're one of the warmest spots in the state right now. we'll talk about how long this cold blast will stay with us in the first warning update. >> for an updated forecast or look at live radar, log onto wjz.com any time. a murder investigation is under way in baltimore city, as baltimore records its first homicide of the new year. derek valcourt reports. >> police say right now, they

have no suspects in the shooting death of a 62-year-old man. officers responded to edgewood road in the park heights road just before 10:00. they found a man slumped over the driver's seat of the vehicle. he was identified as bruce royceterof baker street. he died a short time later at sinai hospital. kai? >> thank you. in 2011, the city had the lowest homicide rate in almost 20 years. due to be arraigned in court today. lee cowan reports for wjz on how police put two and two together, when they realized federal agents had arrested the suspect's mother. >> reporter: the day before some 53 arson fires, the man police say is their prime suspect, 24-year-old harry burkhart, went on a tirade in this federal courthouse. sources say he was upset that his motor, dorothy burkhart, had been arrested by u.s.

officials on a warrant out of germany. >> he made disturbing comments, there were a lot of curse words in english, words i won't repeat here. >> they will be extradited out. united states. if burkhart's motive was retaliation for his mother's arrest, investigators aren't saying. >> i'm not going to get into any details of statements he made. >> both were here in the country illegally, say officials. a website registered to dorothy burkhart indicated she ran an adult massage service. when he saw surveillance tape police released of the arson suspect. >> reporter: burkhart is scheduled to be arraigned on at least one count of arson. but investigators say a lot more charges are pending. and police in germany say burkhart is under investigation for a 2001 house fire there. >> they've occupied wall street and parks across the u.s. and this weekend.

a local group plans to occupy some local gas stations. americans for prosperity is protesting governor o'malley's plan to a 15-cent a gallon tax increase. they will hold rallies. they cite a recent poll that indicates most marylanders are against the tax. gas prices are back on the rise across the united states. in tonight's wjz pump watch in maryland. the average price for a gallon of gas is $3.27. last month, the same gallon cost $3.19. and last year, the gallon of gas cost an average of $3.07, this time. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin. >> hi, mary. hi, everyone. well, we are starting off with a little congestion outside the top side outer loop. slowing to charles street. west side of the inner loop, when you travel in that direction, you'll see a couple of brake lights as you approach

the years. but some cancers are still on the rise. >> reporter: 68-year-old enrique knew something was wrong. he had pain every time he ate. >> it started to radiate to my shoulder. >> reporter: a cat scan revealed bad news. he had pancreatic cancer, one of several cancers on the rise, according to a new report from the american cancer society. >> we're seeing a rise in cancers of the thyroid, cancers of the esophagus, cancer of the liver, cancer of the pancreas, and cancer of the throat. >> reporter: it's estimated there will be more than 1.6 million cases of cancer. and more than half a million will die in the u.s. this year alone. doctors say obesity, lack of exercise, and high caloric intake are part of the problem. >> there is some good news. cancer rates continue to decline in men and women when it comes to common cancers like

an 8th grader is shot by police. it happened at cummings middle school in brownsville, texas this morning. the school district said the officer confronted the 15-year- old suspect in the hallway and shot him when he wouldn't drop his woip. -- weapon. the students were taken to a nearby park to be picked up by their parents. no one else was hurt. there is no word on why the teen brought the gun to school. a department of corrections bus carrying nearly 20 inmates overturns on the highway in new york. no one was seriously hurt. but the bus driver was trapped for a short time. police say none of the inmates

even tried to escape. the prisoners were on their way to a medium security facility, following court appearances. there's no word on what caused the crash. another animal attack in australia in as many days. this time, a surfer survives a terrifying attack. it happened on the beach where two sharks were sighted. authorities are warning folks not to go in the water at dusk. >> the sun went down, ended here. the 28-year-old victim wheeled into the emergency department, conscious and talking, but noticing a deep jagged flesh wound on his arm. he survived what most fear the most. it happened here just before 8:00 p.m. these three teenagers were among the first on scene. >> the shock brought on his board. >> his arm was up? >> the shark just took a chunk out of his arm. >> reporter: leading from the arm, the surfer passed back to

shore. >> i see the man. and we could see the bone and the arteries. so it was really quite deep. >> reporter: they used the surf board to try to control the bleeding and kept him calm until emergency crews arrived. >> he had a number of puncture wounds. >> reporter: experts believe it could have been a bronze whaler, recently sighted at a nearby beach. >> at dusk, surfers are aware that is a shark-feeding time. >> officials say there will be patrolling in that area, looking for the shark. well, switching gears. a good afternoon on wall street. after a slow morning, stocks picked up in the last few hours of trading. dow up. s&p up just a fraction.

nasdaq down just a fraction. let's go to new york now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. boeing will close its massive defense plants in wichita, kansas late next year. it's a huge blow to wichita, which will lose over 2,000 at the facility. it also hopes for an additional 7500 jobs that boeing plans to bring to the city with its air force contract. 2011 was a good year for u.s. autopakers. -- automakers. chrysler's sale jumped 26% last year. general motors sales rose 14%. and ford sales climbed 11%. consumers feel confident about the economy. in all, u.s. auto sales were up nearly 10%, compared to 2010. consumers continue to shop in full force, even after christmas. a trade group says retail sales jumped more than 5% in the final week of december. a rise in the use of gift

32 in cumberland. 32 in ocean city. as we mentioned a little while ago, if you're anywhere where the temperature is up to freezing, that's one of the warmer spots on the map. 32 now in rock hall. then we get down to 31 in columbia. 29 in westminster. winds are coming in with a bit of a southerly component around d.c. we did see a bit of a shift around noontime hour, to the west and southwest. that helped to bring the temperatures up just a little bit. clouds have been blocking out the sun. but with this northerly component, we're tapping into those temperatures up around canada and around the arctic. it's the reason that every bit of precipitation is coming down in the form of light snow. most of this, though, because the air is so dry, you saw the dew point around 7, is evaporating. disappearing as had hits the -- it hits the ground. cloud cover, they are still not ruling it out. but the high pressure to our south is going to eventually

from the home where the royal family tradition celebrates christmas. they have apparently been in the woods for four months. police have not identified the woman. but today, they said she appears to be between the ages of 15 and 23. the investigation is focus on women who have gone missing in recent months in that area. police are hoping dna samples will provide a break in that case. >> queen elizabeth and her husband, prince phillip, were at the estate, when the body was found. the coroner in the high- profile death of a florida toddler speaks about the case. last year, casey anthony was acquitted in the murder case against her daughter caylee. caravia said that she still believes it was a homicide. the revelations came during an interview with dr. drew, on hln. 16 people are recovering today, after a bus crashes into a street sweeper in oklahoma.

the sweeper was traveling at a low speed on the interstate overnight, when the bus changed lanes and slammed into the back of the vehicle. police say it appears the bus driver simply wasn't paying attention. none of the injuries suffered during the crash are considered life-threatening. now, the students are back in school for the most part, after the holiday break. bus drivers report more murderrists, ignoring their stop signs and flashing lights. as mike schuh reports, that has place stepping in. >> reporter: when driver joe bryant heads out in the school bus, he's sure a scene like this one, captured on you tube, will play out. a motorist, ignoring and driving around the stop sign and flashing lights. a private wake was held this afternoon, for 10-year-old lily and 7-year-old twins, grace and sarah. the girls died, along with their grandparents, when fire swept through their mansion. hot embers discarded outside the home sparked the fire. the children apparently swept the fireplace cleaned, worried that santa would get burned. signs of the report tonight. richard thompson reports reports from eatonville, washington on the memorial being planned. >> a small memorial stands at the entrance to mount rainier, on the day we learned a critical response team arrived at the park and met with the entire staff to work and support them in their grief. meantime, police officers continue to stand and watch outside the eaton home. i've learned family friends are meeting in eatonville tonight, to organize a memorial, vigil, and family fund for the family.

they are called, whackles. and they're forcing shoppers to duck for cover. shop owners say they are hurting business. they can move into places where they are being forced out in other spots. business owners hope the birds will be gone come spring. cold temperatures in florida have farmers worried. they're focused on how to keep their crops frozen for the least amount of time. their biggest weapon against the cold is water. >> they're turning on the pumps. to protect the produce. >> brings the warm water out of the ground to spray it under the trees. and that creates a fog. >> reporter: third generation citrus farmer justin sole says that fog, created through irrigation lines should raise the temperature in the grove an estimated 3 to 5 degrees. but if it freezes for a long time, it could impact his bottom line.

>> what will happen is, if it gets too cold, it will burst those vessels, creating juice. and that will immediately freeze. so what you'll end up doing is losing the entire orange. >> reporter: the water will flow all night into the early morning. until temperatures reach above freezing. he says the more protection, the better, as these trees only produce fruit once a year. >> we need to do our best to keep it on there and keep it protected until such a time that we come and harvest it and take it onto the processing plant. >> reporter: he says he is also worried about the trees getting a shock from the cold. >> they go down to 20 degrees in about three days is going to be a shock. so we just hope key kiwi can -- we can get the water running, get the irrigation running, get the water nice and warm in here, and keep the temperatures up as much as we can, and pray that it doesn't get as cold. >> reporter: that was rachel ra fanelli reporting. if the crops are frozen for four hours, it can cause

damage. and six hours, can cause damage to the actual tree. captain mike perry has more. >> we have a carbon monoxide incident in the 1100 block of winchester street. this is in west baltimore. fire officials called here a short time ago, reference to a possible carbon monoxide poisoning. they checked and found carbon monoxide levels inside at 700 parts per million. they were evaluating at this time, six patients from inside the middle of row home. it's not clear if any of those will be transported to a local area hospital. as you can see, fire officials remain on the scene. there was a report of a possible generator being utilized in the basement. and that may be the cause of the carbon monoxide. it's unclear whether any of these counties are affected. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, mike perry, in sky eye chopper 13. a man is on a mission in china.

he wants to make the streets safer for pedestrians. as you can see, this man, from finland, is boldly walking in the street and stopping the cars, to allow a man to cross the road. he says he wants he wants to remind drivers of the importance of obeying traffic rules and allowing people to cross safely. several pedestrians have been hit and killed in china, in recent months. that took some nerve. actor nick cannon is in the hospital, suffering minor kidney failure. his wife, singer maria carey -- mariah carey. carey posted this picture of the couple in the colorado hospital. well, not this picture. you're looking at video file of him there. carey is asking people to keep cannon in their thoughts. he is expected to recover fully. the tv show, the lion king wraps up its show here. it has already brought in $1.5 million in ticket sales. that's the most any broadway show has made at the

well, that looks pretty. but it's cold out there. >> it certainly felt like snow all day. really did. we do have a few flurries around. maybe you'll see a few flurries today. it won't be like yesterday's snow squalls that hit portions of carroll, baltimore and harford county. but maybe a few flurries this evening. take a look at temps. it's only cold enough for precipitation to be frozen. 31. the dew point, but the air is so dry. it's tough to get flakes in that. dew point at seven degrees. north winds at 6. it's holding steady. right now, 27, oakland. 26, hagerstown. just freezing, ocean city, patuxent, and d.c., 28 in elkton. upper 20s to the freezing mark as you can see.

and yes, we saw some ice. but it takes at least a week of below-freezing temperatures and the ponds have to be at least four inches thick to go ice skating. don't even venture out on any bodies of water until we have had that kind of weather. and we're not going to see that in the near future. because we have a warmup coming, actually tonight. 31/14 this morning. the average is 42/25. record 70 in 2000 and 4 above zero in 1918. right now, a light north wind at 6. we're really not looking at a wind chill. but it will have a breeze. a weak front comes through the area. does have some cloud cover. actually, warmer air is trying to move in over top of this chilly air. and that's radar showing maybe a few flakes. doesn't look like a big hill. but you might see a few flakes yet this evening. the widescale. you can see in the atlantic ocean, the water is warm. the cold air coming in right

over the atlantic ocean. the gulf stream forms clouds right out there. all the way down to florida. this morning, naples was 36 degrees. not too far from the orange groves. fort myers was 34. they did have freezing temperatures, central florida. many spots were around 30 to 32 degrees this morning. now, to the west of this, some clouds with this weak system. behind us, there's actual air building. 10 degrees warmer than today. even warmer on friday and the weekend looks right now, very mild. maybe some showers here on sunday. but you can see the radar showing some light flurry activity possible around the region. there's that weak front coming through. milder air coming in tomorrow and friday. and a much milder weekend back in the 50s, friends. west winds, maybe gusting to 20 knots. bay temp around 41 degrees. tonight, lots of clouds. maybe a few flurries. but warmer than last night. 27, that's above average. tomorrow, 44. still above average, with
