an american man convicted of spying for the cia. >> sharp words for the president and the plea from the man's family. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> growing tensions. today, a former marine is sentenced to death by an iranian court. tara mergener reports for wjz, it's the latest on a series of actions, ratcheting up the war of words. >> an iranian court has convicted this american of working for the cia and sentenced him to death. 28-year-old amir merzay hickmety is a former marine, who worked as an iraq translator in afghanistan. they say he got special training for what they call an intelligence mission. his father insists, hickmety was not a spy. he says his son was visiting his grandmothers in iraq when he was captured. his parents say they are shocked and terrified.

iran's law gives him 20 days to appeal the verdict. the state department sent a strong message about hickmety's fate. >> we've maintained from the beginning that the charges against him were a fabrication. and we call on the iranian government to release him. >> reporter: his death sentence is just the latest in a series of incidents that are escalating tensions between the u.s. and iran. his trial took place as the obama administration talks about tough new sanctions aimed at iran. >> reporter: iran has stepped up efforts to enrich uranium at a bunker. they say it could upgrade for use in nuclear weapons. the u.s. and its allies believe that is iran's real goal. but tehran insists, it is only for research and energy. >> at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> the state department says if

iran is enriching uranium, they could be in violation of its application to the u.n. security council. >> a former soldier from laurel is charged with trying to help a somali terrorist. he is suspected of going to join a terror group. he was taken into busted -- custody on his return to maryland. baxon was in the army from 2007, to july 2011, and served in baghdad and korea. a terror plot is foiled. a man described as an islamic extremist is foiled. police say more on what the man's dangerous plans were. >> reporter: he was allegedly planning to attack crowded areas with bombs. he is a u.s. citizen, born in

yugoslavia. he was arrested last weekend, trying to buy explosives from an undercover fbi agent. he was quoted as saying, we all have to die, so why not die the islamic way? he also made a video explaining himself for carrying out the planned violent attack. he is charged with one count of attempted use of weapon of mass destruction. the fbi says it has been watching the suspect for months after being tipped off by an informant. >> reporter: a storm system just to our south brings wet snow to the nation's capital. take a look. here's a live look at light snow falling at the white house. it's been coming down now for a couple of hours. here at home, there's a chill in the air. and the clouds are hiding the sun. we could see a flurry or two here. let's go to meteorologist bernadette woods, tracking first warning live doppler radar. >> hello, everyone out there. we're going to go right to first doppler radar and show

you this storm that is passing by. and the center of it is down in virginia. that's why most of the moisture is off to our south. you can see, it is clipping around maryland and most of d.c. a lot of this is coming down as light snow. now, i want to switch it over and show you temperature-wise what's going on with this entire system here. notice, almost everyone above freezing. that's why the snow isn't really accumulating all that much. maybe on some of the grassy services. that's about it. but notice the dew point, how low that is. when this falls through the clouds, it's going to cool. and that's why it's still staying in the form of snow all the way to the ground. that's why we're seeing snow out there. but this storm will leave us. another warmup is on the way. and we'll have that forecast. >> thank you, bernadette. sorrow and hope mingle at the one-year remembrance of the tucson shooting. 16 people were killed. including arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords. ben tracy has more on giffords'

confident showing. >> i pledge of allegiance to the flag -- >> reporter: in tucson sunday night, gabrielle giffords did what nobody would have thought possible a year ago. >> with liberty and justice for all. >> reporter: giffords' remarkable recovery was on full display. but she will soon need to make a decision about her political future. her husband, mark kelly, says she will decide whether she will seek re-election this fall, well before the may 30th deadline. >> what does your gut tell you? >> some days, i think she could do the job today. but other days, she gets really tired and she is really focused on her therapy. >> reporter: giffords' staff says she has full comprehension, even holding a weekly video conference with her washington audience. yet giffords has cast just one vote this year, shocking congress by showing up to vote to raise the nation's debt limit in august.

>> there's really only a handful of complaints that the congresswoman is not there to be voting on the floor. i think everyone recognizes that she is working hard to recover. >> reporter: meanwhile, they are working to stock her campaign war chest. >> real question is, would you want to run against her? it's difficult to run a campaign that doesn't suggest that she's not fit for office. >> i wanted a back door representing arizona is my honor. >> there's also been speculation that mark kelly could run for her seat in november. but so far, he has dismissed that idea publicly. looking for a killer, city police are going door to door, searching for witnesses to the murder of a beloved east baltimore woman. mary heinz is found dead thursday following a fire at her home. friday, police discovered she had been stabbed multiple times, turning the fires a into a murder case. neighbors say she was struggling with bills and they

can't imagine who would want to hurt her. jurors reaching a verdict in the trial of a man accused of raping a 13-year-old girl in a local skating ring. rink. more on the charges against 26- year-old davon perry. >> this morning, a jury acquitted davon perry of the most serious charges against him, including rape. a girl claims perry attacked her. the jury also could not reach a verdict on two additional charges. so the judge has declared a mistrial. perry will be retried on those two charges. perry remains in police custody. >> the remaining charges are for second-degree sexual assault. each offense carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. morgan state's men's basketball coach is off the bench for now. the university has suspended todd bozeman, after an altercation with a player. several people say it appears bozeman hit a player in the

sheri arnold was last seen saturday morning in sidney. police say a shoe was found near one of her regular running routes. the national guard troops troops and three dog teams are aiding in that search. arnold has tout math for -- taught math for 18 years. also, a bus crash sends passengers flying. it forced passengers onto its side. that crash tossed several people from the bus and even trapped some underneath it. two people killed and dozens others injured. an australian tourist somehow survives a near-death collision. a bungee jumper's worst nightmare. >> reporter: it's billed as 360 feet of pure adrenaline. but a new year's eve turned into pure terror. take a look a look as hur bung

-- her bungee cord snaps. 60 feet above water. >> it went black right away. and i felt like i had been slapped all over. >> reporter: langworthy was alive. but you can see the water started to drag her toward the rapids. the water also full of crocodiles. the 24-year-old australian said she had to dive down to free her legs from the rocks. >> when i was first brought out of the water be they put me on my back. so all of the water i had inhaled meant i couldn't breathe. and then they rolled me on my side and i started coughing out water and blood. >> her body is bruised and beaten. now recovering at a south australian hospital. >> up until now, 50,000 tourists were making that jump every year. can wall street start the week off on the right foot? the dow was up 33. s&p up 3. nasdaq up 2. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. a dismal year means wall street is about to take a big pay cut. bankers' pay is expected to be the lowest since 2008 when the financial crisis hit. lower trading revenue and new regulations squeezed the company's bottom line. that means some bankers at firms like goldman sachs, morgan stanley and jp morgan, could see their 2011 salaries cut. some may get no bonus at all. volkswagen is reporting a record sale. it puts it ahead of japan's toyota. volkswagen says it delivered nearly 8.2% last year. still, the german automaker says it expects a tough year ahead. and if you bought an e-book recently, you have plenty of company. sales of digital books surge

the week after christmas, as many people received e-readers as holiday gifts. in fact, nearly all of the books on the top 50 best sellers lists were e-book edition. and wal-mart, starting today, will begin offering free preparation of simple tax forms. tax experts from h& block and hewitt -- h&r block and hewitt jackson of setting up kiosks. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. an israeli parliament member douses another member with a glass of water. it happened during a heated exchange over the firing of a school principal. the principal was let go, after taking students to a march for human rights in tel aviv last month. the two disagreed over the punishment, yelling at each other, until the water was thrown in his face. it is not clear if the woman will be reprimanded. >> i will never do that to you. i always have my cup of water here.

in manchester, new hampshire, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> romney has a good chance to run away with new hampshire. the latest cbs news poll shows a much tighter race across the nation. prosecutors are trying to reach a plea agreement in a new york bomb plot. police say he was just hours away from finishing a home made pipe bomb. he was reportedly going to use the bombs to attack soldiers, police and other targets. this is one of the few terror cases prosecuted on the state level. prosecutors hope to reach a deal before the next court date. self-defense or a war crime. they decide to fight one of the biggest criminal cases of the iraq war. >> prosecutors say the unit lost control, killing two dozen people, after a roadside bomb exploded near a convoy in 2005, killing one marine. staff sergeant frank wooterich is charged with voluntary

manslaughter. and during an interview with 60 minutes, he says his team was trying to secure the area when they fired in the nearby homes of the iraqi town of haditha. they say they used grenades and fired ingrim nantly into -- indiscriminantly into those houses, killing women and children. >> wooterich is the last of eight marines to face charges. six had charges dropped or dismiddled and one -- dismissed and one was acquitted. a week after a ranger was gunned down inside. but her former coworkers say they're still coming to grips with what happened. stacy sakamoto has the story. >> reporter: by midday, the porch at the long myer museum was filled with tributes to ranger margaret anderson. a sign explained who she was and how she was shot and killed last sunday. mount rainier national park was closed all week. first as the couple hundred law

enforcement officers searched for the gunmen. then to allow colleagues like kevin balker a chance to do this. >> it took a while to open up. and it took me a while to figure out why. but i think it's part of the letting go, i think, of margaret, that we're going back to normal operations. >> reporter: we got our first look at barn flats today. this is where anderson was shot, as she tried to stop a car that blew past a snow-chain checkpoint. >> and we heard shots fired come over the radio. >> reporter: park interpreter, rebecca roland, was back at work today. she remembers the anxious, 14 hours she spent trying to calm and entertain more than 100 visitors, locked down inside the jackson visitors center. >> everybody was very kind. what i remember most, though, was how worried i was about my friends who were still out there.

>> that was stacy sakamoto reporting. ranger margaret anderson worked in maryland for several years at the national park before moving to washington state. charges are fired after a hunter is shot. it happened in a wooded area near fort washington. five men were hunting deer. 59-year-old ricky johnson of clinton, suffered nonlife- threatening injuries. now, police say charges have been filed against all five men. charges are going to be pending against all five of the persons because hunting is obviously illegal. in our park. >> reporter: saturday was the last date deer could be hunted with firearms in the baltimore, washington region. none of the men had permits. a big recall, after customers complained that pills are ending up in bottles. mary bubala is in the investigation. >> reporter: pharmaceutical giant novartis is recalling several over-the-court drugs in

the u.s. mislabeled and broken pills. no injuries have been reported, though. the recall includes excedrin and no-doze, with september 14th expireration dates. the company is urging people to throw out or return unused products that are part of the recall. >> the cause of the mix-up is under investigation. novartis officials say they suspended operations and shipment from its facility in lincoln, nebraska to rectify problems there. right now, it's snowing at the white house in washington, d.c. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> and just about 10 minutes ago, bwi marshall, reporting a little bit of light snow. it's well above freezing. there's a tiny little band on the edge of this precip. cold enough here aloft. south of that, it's mainly rain. north of the city, not a flake, not a drop.

police in the uk sneak past a bomb security checkpoint. security experts say these kinds of threats are designed to expose potential threats. they will deploy more than 13,000 troops and 20,000 security guards during the event. olympics kick off july 27th. the body found on queen elizabeth's estate is identified. they are sure that it is that of a missing teen, 17-year-old lisa demetri dreva. police found the remains last week on the grounds of the queen's vacation home. investigators say her body had been there for approximate four months. official cause of death has not been released. police in new york release a composite sketch. kai is in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: that's right. the sketch shows a woman whose partial remains were found along a remote stretch of highway. suffolk county police say more remains from the same person were also found on a different

beach in 1996. investigators think a serial killer is responsible for the body, along with nine others that were found on the same stretch of highway. authorities say that woman accidentally drowned. denise? >> thank you, kai. authorities are asking anyone with information about the identity to contact police. a colorado woman is badly burned after a package explodes in her car. now police say her ex-husband may have been responsible for the attack. jennifer bryce has more. >> reporter: the package exploded inside this volvo lafayette police believe was intended. it was evacuated as bomb squad technicians and robots investigated. >> it's very am strange. very, very strange. >> reporter: chris was driving, allison was a apparently. a facebook friend of the stone family have updated the couple's condition saying, chris is just fine and allison is badly injured but eventually will be okay.

please pray and thank you in advance. police say they do not believe there is a threat in the community. >> i have more knowledge going on. it really helps you. >> reporter: sources say the fbi was called in to assist in case the threat was more wide ranging. the fbi confirms they are no longer on the case. the atf has six people involved. lafayette police say allison has two children with her ex- husband. >> a background check shows lafayette's husband has a prior arrest for domestic violence and a permanent restraining order against him from another woman. an rv crash claims two lives in mississippi. police say a group of friends was headed to new orleans. one passenger died at the scene. the driver died a short time later. at least 10 others were rushed to the hospital with minor injuries. investigators say the group planned to attend monday night's championship game, between lsu and alabama. in tonight's healthwatch,

[ male announcer ] 80 delicious calories. got a little snow over there in washington. you can see just a light dusting on the roof of the white house there. temperatures are above freezing so that the most part, it's melting here. a few flakes, you can see just starting. but it's not going to last. the precip is going to move out here. probably in the baltimore area in the next hour or two. but you see a few flakes falling down. and it's above freezing. so it's going to melt. take a look at radar. we have a little band of mainly wet snow. but in a few areas, there's a light dusting on the grassy areas. the streets are, for the most part, a little wet.

but later tonight, if temperatures can drop quick enough, then maybe just some very isolated icy spots. it's possible. but here north of the city, nothing has fallen all day long. and it will not happen. in fact, it's all from the city south and east, that little band of snow moving off to the east. temperature-wise, 36. above freezing. dew point still below. up in the clouds, where this is made, it's below freezing, hence, we're seeing a little wet snow reaching the ground. 72% humidity. it's coming up. south winds at 5. barometer, holding steady. 32 there. and as you saw, just into the baltimore area. but west and north, it's just cloudy skies. clearing out to the west, 39. and 39 in ocean city. a little light rain and drizzle down there. even around the baltimore metro, no one is at freezing. but the coolest spot, rock hall at 34, even annapolis with snow, and kent island at snow. right on route 50, snow falling. temperatures in the mid-50s now.
