grass. you can see the precip, mainly south of baltimore. and north of the city, hasn't been a flake or drop of rain at all. but now, from the city, from tv hill, we sue a -- saw a few flakes. most of it, south of the area, from d.c. toward annapolis, toward easton. that's where the bulk of this is in the form of wet snow. and it's accumulated on the grassy surfaces. roads are very warm. it's not going to be a problem. temperatures can drop later tonight. there can be some isolated slick spots. it will begin to clear out later tonight. bernadette has a look at the sat rad, which shows you where the rain and snow lines are in the temperatures. bernadette? >> that's right. we'll take a look at the temperatures and slain the swairchgdz a little more -- explain the situation a little more. the thing is, clouds came in. notice as the storm passes, it's a fine line, rain across the south to snow across the north. that's because of these temperatures. around the region, a lot of us

the sport utility vehicle. it came out as a personal injury accident. you can see the front end of this is destroyed. this person will be transported to local area hospitals. and it appears baltimore police are investigating. the road, however, does remain open. the one lane getting by in each direction. >> thank you, captain mike perry, reporting live. police hope to find witnesses in the murder of an 84-year-old woman. someone stabbed her to death and set fire to her home. now, detectives are going door to door in her east baltimore neighborhood. wjz is live. adam may is there with an update on the investigation. >> reporter: police don't have any suspects in this case. right now, they are in this neighborhood, handing out this flyer, hoping to find a witness. >> reporter: baltimore city police canvassed the 2600 block of east biddle street, hoping to find new information in the murder of 84-year-old mary heinz. >> this isn't something that we sit back and say nothing about. somebody needs to pick up a phone. somebody needs to call us. >> reporter: the retired school

principal was stabbed, then her home set on fire thursday. through the window, you can see heavy smoke and fire damage. >> how has the community reacted to this crime? >> butch wes has lived in this for 50 years. >> watch everybody raise up around here. and she helped raise him. >> cutting nice grass. >> reporter: terence g., upset and outraged. >> like said, there's a lot of elderly people who live in this community. and we try to keep this community as best kept up as possible. >> reporter: the lead detective is optimistic. >> mrs. heinz was loved and respected by every person we spoke with. this is a human being that no one had anything negative to say about. >> i had never seen anything like this before. it's so sad. >> it's a shame. and i hope they catch whoever did it. because she was a sweet old lady. to me, she was a sweet old lady. >> reporter: and baltimore city police say canvases like this have worked in the past. that i have helped solve other crimes. and they're hoping will happen again.

we're live in east baltimore, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. adam, thank you. crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest. >> reporter: the man accused in a gang rape at a roller rink is acquitted of the most serious charges against him. a jury finds davon guilty in an attack. perry still faces two counts of sex offense, because a jury could not reach a decision on those charges. the men's basketball coach at morgan state is accused of punching one of his players. todd bozeman is suspended indefinitely without pay, following the incident. it happened toward the end of one of the teen's games. witnesses say bozeman struck senior guard, larry bastfield. bozeman is calling it accidental conduct, but an investigation is ongoing. wjz will have much more on the story coming up all new at 6:00. the anticipation is building as the ravens prepare

for a play-off game at m&t bank stadium. wjz is the place for complete coverage of the play-offs. jessica kartalija is tracking the excitement among fans first. sports director mark viviano is in owings mills, where he just spoke with head coach john harbaugh. >> yes. the ravens emerge from their weekend of rest and got right to work with a practice here today, now knowing who their opponent will be. and their play-off game will be a rematch of a game played here in baltimore, three months ago. and the talk here today was about the houston teksans who -- texans who are coming to town. >> reporter: houston's rad to -- road to baltimore included the texans' first-ever play-off game. an all-around beet down. >> houston did it with defense. jj watt returning interception. and star running back aryan foster. this impressive touchdown run. part of his 153-yard

performance. but it's not expected to be so easy for houston in their rematch for the ravens. that was a game that baltimore won, 29-14. it's just an honor and a privilege to play against those players, with my players, on this stage. and you know, this is what athletes dream of, man. and it's just -- i'm excited. >> reporter: houston is in the play-offs, for the first time, despite losing their top two quarterbacks to injury. rookie tj yates will face ed reed. >> we're going to go up against two great players in this league next week. so we'll be looking forward to the challenge. >> it's going to be our players running our system against their players running their system. whoever plays the best will win the game. i think the two teams probably know each other pretty well at

the texans. prices at the pump are going up again, just as maryland leaders are considering another increase in the gas tax. derek valcourt explains where that extra taxpayer money would go. but first, denise has more on what is behind the rising prices. denise? >> reporter: some experts are saying gas prices am reach an all-time high this year. >> reporter: the average price for a gallon of regular is up 9 cents from last week. that's an increase from 30 cents a gallon this time last year. the hike is blamed in part on iran's recent threats to shut down the strait of hormuz. one of the world's busiest routes for oil shipments. tonight, wjz continues to track the prices. and marylanders are paying $3.30 for a gallon of regular. many analysts fear we could be paying more than $4 a gallon by spring time. mary? >> denise, thank you. as gas prices climb, local

drivers may also be hit with higher tax. >> when it comes to this issue, there's a lot that local governments want to do to make major trptdzation improvements. but there -- transportation improvements. but there is not enough money in state coughers -- coffers to do it. >> reporter: the city's priority is to make bayline. carroll county's top priority is to improve heavily traveled route 32. anne arundel says it needs to widen 175 in fort meade. in fact, add up the costs for just the top-priority projects, and the state would need an extra $12 billion. governor o'malley explains that that is money the state just doesn't have. >> there's no way to build a $100 million bridge for $10 million. >> reporter: that's why they recommend raising the state's gas tax, by 15 cents per gallon

over three years. >> reporter: the idea of an increase is being discussed in annapolis and on the roads. >> i would sacrifice, i think, 15 cents for that period for improving the roads. >> reporter: many drivers say the price of gas is already too high. that's in part because of the cost of crude oil, which makes up 75 cent of a cost of a gallon. 10 sends for refining that oil. but the last 10 cents, for every gallon, 18.4 percent goes to maryland. and more goes to the trust fund. adding 15 more cents would maryland's gas tax the sixth highesterate country: behind these five states which all charge 40 cents or more. >> derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> thanks for breaking it down for us. analysts say a 15-cent increase

towson. anywhere north. city. south of the city. airport has some light snow. most of it has been right on route 50 there, from annapolis to d.c. on the lawn surfaces. and across southern portions of maryland as well. the western sections of the area haven't seen much at all. in fact, north and west of the city. all of this has been mainly in the form of rain. but in the last two or three hours, from d.c. over toward easton and cambridge, that's where we're seeing the light snow. for the next hour or two, you'll probably see some more. it could be half inch or more accumulations on the grassy surfaces. the streets will be wet. later tonight, any wet streets, if there's freezing conditions, of course, there will be salting if anything happens. but there could be slick spots later tonight as skies clear out. watch out for that late tonight. particularly on the side road. 32, easton. we drop to 33 this hour. because the snow has cooled things down at the airport. 35, 37. it's a little milder to the

west. where we're actually starting to see some clearing skies. dew points back up to 31. getting very close to the freezing mark. if it gets up to 33, which it might, we'll just see a little drizzle for a while. it will clear out. 39 in ocean city. right now, generally, we've seen temperatures in the mid- to upper 40s. most of the day. but with precip falling. temperatures have also brought that chilly air down to the surface. southerly winds, yes. tomorrow, these southerly winds bring you very pleasant, mild conditions for a while. but there's another area of low pressure over texas that brought heavy rain to southeast texas. flooding in the houston area. thunderstorms on the northern edge. snow in the extreme northern sections of texas. there you see it. low pressure spinning there. we'll head to our west. but ahead of it, warmer air coming up the east coast. a warm front will bring us rain by wednesday. wednesday night, maybe even lingering into thursday. it and it could be -- and it could even be decent rain. rain south of us.

growing tonight. >> reporter: in afghanistan, safe ground is never a given for u.s. troops. not when a car bomb or roadside bomb can go off anywhere, any time, finding and diffusing those bombs, is 24-year-old matthewicide leer's-- matthew sidler's job. he and two other airmen were killed last week by an i.e.d. >> it's sad news. it's a terrible thing to hear, especially starting a brand new year. that brings it home when it happens right across the street from you. >> that street is this quiet cul-de-sac in westminster county. matthew's family went to claim their son's body. neighbors flew american flags at the loss of one of their own. >> you read about this in the newspapers every day. and you think, oh, you know, that's really far away. and you don't think about who it is impacting. and that it's in this

has convicted this american of working for the cia and sentenced him to death. 24-year-old amir hickzettey worked as a translator in iraq and afghanistan. he got special training before entering iran for what they call an intelligence mission. his father insists hickmety was not a spy. he says his son was visiting his grandmothers in iran when he was arrested. he was born in arizona. his family is originally from iran. his parent says they are shocked and terrified. >> reporter: iran's law gives him 20 dale days to a-- 20 days to appeal the verdict. the state department sent a strong message about hickmety's fate. >> we've maintained from the beginning that the charges against him were a fabrication and we've called on the iranian government to release him immediately. >> reporter: this is just the latest in a series of incidents that are escalating tensions between the u.s. and iran. his trial took place as the obama administration took

sanctions aimed at punishing iran. >> iran has stepped up its effort to enrich uranium. they say iran is producing uranium that could upgrade for use in nuclear weapons. the u.s. and its allies believe that is iran's real goal. >> reporter: but tehran insists, its nuclear program is only for research and energy. >> reporter: the new sanctions against iran make it harder for the country to sell its oil. >> reporter: at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the state department says if it is upgrading, it is in violation of u.n. security council rules. police say a car bomb in colorado may have been the work of a husband. allison stone and her current husband, as they were driving to boulder. now, investigators are naming her husband as a person of interest. police seized several items.

but so far it has been evacuated. thousands of volunteers are joining in the search for a missing high schoolteacher in montana. 43-year-old cheryl arnold never returned from a run on saturday morning. search crews recovered one of her shoes near a ditch on one of her regular jogging routes. she has taught math for 18 years. several over-the-counter products could contain powerful pain pills. it is part of a mix-up at a drug plant. navartis is pulling bottles of excedrin off store shelves. it's part of a voluntary recall. the swiss drug maker says the over-the-counter pills may contain stray tablets from other navartis products. >> first of all, you need to be concerned about the side effects if the drugs were

mixed. so some of the drugs that could have been mixed cause a lot more drowsiness than just your excedrin or bufferin. >> reporter: it was shut down last month, after fda inspectors found problems there. >> reporter: the swiss drug maker decided to pull the products after pulling complaints of mislabeled bottles and broken chips and pills. >> reporter: navartis says bring it back for a refund. >> reporter: some may also have been packaged with powerful prescription painkillerless. they sell the drugs as percocet, endoset, opeda and zidone. but the fda isn't recalling those pill because the risk of stray pills is low and so many patients rely on those medications. >> they know the prescription is widespread and there's a lot of usage around the country. they don't want to create any irrational fear. >> reporter: experts say look

hampshire to make an early start here. a state suffering from high unemployment. it's a problem perry says he knows how to fix. >> the rest of the country lost 2 million jobs during the period of time we created jobs in my home state. >> reporter: in south carolina, it's nearly 10%. >> reporter: the lines are long at this job center. >> ken carnes lost his six- figure job as a financial adviser three years ago and has recently been working part-time in a grocery store. >> and the seafood department has a seafood clerk. and i get anywhere from 5 to 10 hours a week, which isn't much. >> reporter: many people here can't even find part-time work. one in 10 don't have a job. only seven other states have a high unemployment rate than south carolina. >> reporter: carnes plans to vote for the candidate he thinks will improve the economy. but he's not sure how long he can stay afloat, especially with a wife, child, and three grandchildren all living together. >> reporter: it's not full-

all right. a little snow flying there. particularly after a couple thousand feet up. as you take a look at radar, north of the city. not a flake or drop of rain today. but from the city on south, pretty much, i think you just got to about northern parkway. it's beginning to clear out. just west of the city, it's ended right through this. -- there. south of the city, that's where we're seeing the snow. and south of the area, it's just rain. we're seeing temperatures a little warmer. but you can see, it's all moving off to the east. and it will be over quickly. looks like a much brighter day. bernadette has a look at that forecast. bernadette? >> that's right. it's beautiful out here now. but this is going away. and sunshine is returning for tomorrow. we start out the day, partly cloudy, about 30 degrees. and as we head through the afternoon. sunshine out there. a few clouds and we're topping out close to 50 degrees. temperatures start tomorrow night. and that sets the stage for another storm. for more on that, here's bob.

her name is elissa demitrieva. her body was found about four miles from the mansion. police have not said what caused her death but have ruled it a homicide. police are able to smuggle a fake bomb during a test. security experts say these kinds of tests are designed to expose any potential threats during -- before and during the summer game in great britain. authorities will deploy more than 13,000 troops and 20,000 security guards during the event. the olympics start in london, july 27th. an alabama couple is rescued at sea after their plane crashes in the bahamas. the plane signaled for help. u.s. coast guard crews were immediately sent out. they located the couple, who were clinging to an inflatable raft. the two were hoisted to safety and flown to the hospital to get checked out. in tonight's healthwatch, many adults take aspirin to

occupy protests get fiery in oakland, california. six people are arrested after police vandalize a minivan and threw bottles at police and lit a fire. one demonstrator even had a stick of dynamite. tensions between protestors and city officials have been rising. organizers call for a weekly anti-police march. an out-of-control car jumps a fence and a pool and crashes into a florida home. the vehicle propelled over a chain-linked fence with a car ending up trunk first across a pool and in someone's dining room. the impact sent glass across the house. a girl suffered a minor scratch. but the homeowner says no one else was injured. i heard a big boom and glass. and i looked out and i didn't see the car. and i came into the living room. my question is, how can he jump over the pool and crash into the house?

hello, everybody. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about tonight. >> after a weekend when temperatures were in the 60s, we are seeing some snow. take a look. it has been snowing heavily there for a few hours. and this is the scene a short time ago, as the chopper flies into the flurries, falling into baltimore. meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk are tracking the system. bob is this. >> take a look at radar. most of it just south and east of the city. and it's moving out. the next 30 to 40 minutes, it will be pretty much gone from the baltimore area. take a little closer look. you can see literally from the city on south and east. here's where the northern edge is, still snowing in annapolis and d.c., just beginning to wind down. but north of the airport, in fact, from the city on north and west, pretty much done, we've had flurries here in tv
