harbaugh. >> the ravens had extra rest. and got back to work here in owings mills. now knowing who their opponent for the play-offs will be. and if is a rematch with a team they beat here in baltimore three months ago. and the ravens now set their sights on the rematch. all the talk is about the texans who are coming to town. >> reporter: houston's first trip to baltimore included the first-ever play-off game. an all-around beet down. houston did it with defense. j.j. watt. and star running back aryan foster shined. this impressive touchdown run, part of his 153-yard performance, in a no-down 31-10 victory. but it's not expected to be so easy for houston in their rematch with the ravens. that was a game baltimore won,

29-14. >> it's just an honor and privilege to play with all of those players on this day. this is what athletes dream of, man. and it's just -- i'm excited. >> reporter: houston is in the play-offs for the first time, despite losing their top two quarterbacks to injury. rookie t.j. yates and his offense will face a veterans ravens defense. >> we're going to go up against two great players. in this league. next week. so you know, we will be looking forward to the challenge. >> it's going to be our players running our system against their players running the system. and whichever team runs best is going to win the game. there's an element of game planning. but i think two teams know each other fairly well at this point. >> and the most optimistic note delivered by coach harbaugh today. he says his team is 100% healthy. he expects all of his players to be ready to play on sunday, which is a huge advantage for the ravens, as a number of

sent this statement to wjz. it reads in part, we are attempting to gather all of the facts to try to determine what happened. coach todd bozeman has been placed on administrative leave, pending the investigation. bozeman is suspended with pay. looking for leads. a retired schoolteacher and principal murdered. her home burned down, causing outrage in her east baltimore neighborhood. now police are looking for her killer. wjz is live on biddle street. adam has more on the investigation. >> reporter: police are in this neighborhood today, handing out this flyer, hoping to find new witnesses in a crime that so far has no suspects suspects and it has sthoked -- shocked this neighborhood. >> reporter: baltimore county police canvas the 2400 block of biddle street, hoping to find new information in the murder of 84-year-old mary heinz. >> this isn't something that we sit back and say nothing about. somebody needs to pick up a phone. somebody needs to call us. >> reporter: the retired

principal was stabbed. through the window, you can see heavy smoke and fire damage. >> how has the community reacted to this crime? >> everybody is upset about it. >> butch has lived in this neighborhood years. >> you watch everybody raise up around here. >> he's cutting the nice grass. >> reporter: terence g., upset and outraged. >> like i said, there's a lot of people in this community. and we try to keep this community as best kept as possible. >> reporter: police have few leads in this case. but the lead in the case is optimistic. >> mrs. heinz is loved and respected by everyone we spoke with. this is a human being no one has anything negative to say about. >> i have never seen anything like this before. it's so sad. >> it's a shame. i hope they catch whoever did it. she was a sweet old lady. to me, she was a sweet old lady. >> late this afternoon, a group of about a half a dozen homicide investigators are back inside the home today, walking

around, still trying to piece together exactly what they think happened. we're live in east baltimore. adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> and crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest. a verdict in the trial of one man accused of raping a girl at a baltimore county roller risk. the jury cleared davon perry of the most serious charges against him, including rape. the jury could not reach a verdict on two additional charges. a former army soldier is charged with attempting to join a foreign terrorist group. greg is accused. flying overseas to take up arms with the somallian terrorist group, alshabab. he served in the army from 2007 to 2011, and converted to islam after being discharged. maryland leaders are considering a hike in the gas tax. wjz is live with complete

coverage. derek valcourt explains where the extra money would go. but first, mary has the reasons for the sudden spike in price. >> reporter: some saber rattling from iran. the country is threatening to shut down the strait of hormuz, a major port for oil. average prices are up 9 cents in just the last week. and 30 cents higher than last year. wjz continues to track prices in our area right now. we're paying about their 3 -- $3.37. for a gallon of regular. that's up 11 cents from a month ago. some fear we could be paying $5 a gallon by the end of the year. vic? >> complete pump watch coverage continues now with derek valcourt. to break down the potential gas tax hike here in maryland. >> when it comes to major transportation projects, there's a lot that local governments want to do. all of them have their own wish list. but there is not enough money in the state coffers to do it all. >> reporter: the city says its

top transportation priority is to build a red line from woodlawn to johns hopkins bay view. carroll county's top priority is to improve heavily-traveled 32. anne arundel says it needs to widen 175 near fort meade. in fact, add up the cost for just the top priority project in the 23 counties in the city, and the state would need an extra $12 billion. governor o'malley points out that's money the state's transportation trust fund doesn't have. >> you get what you pay for. and there's no way to build a $100 million bridge for $10 million. >> reporter: they recommend raising the state's gas tax by 15 cents per gallon over three years. >> reporter: the idea of an increase is being discussed in annapolis and on the roads. >> i would sacrifice, i think, 15 cents over that period for that road. i would. >> reporter: many drivers say the price of gas is already too high. that's in part because of the high cost of crude oil, which

makes up 75% of the cost of a gallon of oil. another 5% goes into refining that oil. but the last 10% is our taxes. for every gallon, 18.4 cents going to the federal government. and more to the transportation trust fund. adding 15 cents would make maryland's reality the 6th highest in the country, behind these five states, which all charge more than 40 cents. >> reporter: though it is expected, so far, lawmakers have not formally introduced any legislation to increase the gas tax. >> derek, thank you. analysts say a 15-cent increase could bring in an additional $480 million in revenue to the state. the republican presidential hopefuls are on the campaign trail, making their final pitch to voters ahead of the primary. that's where we find manuel gallegus with the latest on this primary. >> reporter: a personal plea to new hampshire voters from front

a maryland man is killed by an explosive device. he grew up in westminster, where those who knew him are mourning tonight. alex demetrick has reaction from his neighbors and friends. >> reporter: in afghanistan, safe ground is never a given for u.s. troops. [ [ sirens ] >> reporter: not when a car

bomb or roadside bomb can go off anywhere, any time. finding and diffusing those bombs is 24-year-old matthew seidler's job. he and two others were killed last week by an improvised explosive device, an i.e.d. >> that's really sad news. it's terrible to hear, especially starting a brand-new year. that brings it home when it happens literally right across the street from you. >> reporter: that street is this quiet cul-de-sac in westminster, carroll county. matthew sidler's family reportedly went to dover air force base to claim their son's body. >> you read about this in the newspapers every day. and you think, oh, that's really far away. and you don't think about who it is impacting. and that it's in, you know, this neighborhood. justin strzelczyk really in deep shock. >> reporter: matthew went to westminster and tried college

for a while before he went into the air force. >> when he found the military, we saw a boy become a man quickly. a big change happened. and it was profound to see. it's just tragic that we can't see the next stage of his life. >> along with matthew sidler, the u.s. air force reports. and an airman from michigan were also killed by the explosion. by the time police arrived, police say 43-year-old were stabbed a number of times. both are expected to recover. in tonight's wjz healthwatch. many adults take aspirin to prevent heart attack or stroke. but a new study says, it's not for everyone.

>> reporter: 56-year-old craig dev rue takes aspirin to protect his heart. >> a few years ago, they found blockage and i had bypass surgery. >> reporter: now, new evidence shows only people like kirk, who are at higher risk for heart attack and stroke should take aspirin daily. while they had fewer heart attacks, taking aspirin didn't lower death rates. >> we know aspirin works in people who are moderate or high risk. it's those who were low risk that we're not sure if using aspirin every day is beneficial. >> aspirin can increase the risk of bleeding in the stomach or intestine. >> gastrointestinal bleeding or stroke. they're small side effects. but when they happen, they can be devastating. >> reporter: doctors recommend patients without a history of heart problems talk to their patients first. >> i think the benefits

you can see that precip across the bay. heading toward delaware and the eastern shore. still getting snow and rain, too. but some areas, now west of the city, even seeing some clearing and the big moon will be out there again tonight. as you can see, there's the edge of the precip. just moving through the annapolis area as you sit. a much warmer and sunny day tomorrow. right now, we're at 34. went up 1 degree this hour. 38, ocean city. 34, d.c. washington, some areas picked up half inch or more on the grass. this afternoon. that's the biggest we've had all winter. 35, pax river. and 32 in easton. yes, there's some acummulations on the lawns there. and on the roads there, secondary roads could see a little slush. later tonight, when it clears out, it drops to 29 or 30. be careful late tonight. they'll be treating those roads, i'm sure. most of it will dry out because we get a bit of a

west/northwest breeze later, which should dry things out. however, there is still a risk of ice in spots. anywhere from low to mid-40s. -- low to mid-30s. very light winds. generally, out of the south. and that's going to bring us mild air tomorrow. and another area of low pressure developing over texas. bringing a lot of rain there. moving off to the west of us. and because of that, the winds tomorrow, will start bringing in milder air. here's that precip moving out tomorrow night. a lot of sun tomorrow. then rain on tap for wednesday. as that low approaches west of us, warm air coming up the east coast. that storm passes to the west of us. but eventually be by late thursday and friday, another front to the northwest, just barely showing. going to drop temperatures here. for the weekend, back to normal, or even colder than average for the weekend. northwest winds, 5 to 10 knots, behind that system. bay temp, 42 degrees. tonight, look for clearing

of store shelves. and the caffeine caplets. the swiss drug maker says the oamptd counter posts. >> first of all, you need to definitely be concerned about side effects. some of the drugs that could have been mixed cause a lot of drowsiness. recall was at a major facility, which was shut down last month, after fda inspectors found problems there. they decided to pull the products after receiving complaints of mislabeled bottles and broken pills. >> novartis says, if you don't have the product, don't use it. and contact the company for a refund. >> reporter: some of their over the counter pills may have been packaged with powerful painkillers. they sell it as percocet, endoset. but the fda isn't recalling

those painkillers because the risk of stray pills is low, and so many patients rely on those medications. >> they know these prescription drugs are widespread. they don't want to create any kind of irrational fear. >> reporter: experts say, look at your medications closely. and if you have any questions, contact your pharmacist. in new york, duarte geraldino, wjz eyewitness news. >> novartis says there have been no adverse health effects related to the problem and that it's working on upgrades at its nebraska plant. mary is live in the newsroom with the latest on the suspect and the charges. mary? >> reporter: well, vic. prosecutors say 25-year-old sammy asmicov made several inflammatory statements. they say he was plotting an attack around tampa, including nightclubs in a sheriff's office. federal agents have been following him for months, after a source came forward, warning them about him.

undercover agents sold machine guns and wanted to make sure he was serious about his plans. >> he is a serialized naturalized citizen. >> an american citizen is sentenced to death by an iranian court, convicted of working with the cia. as tara mergener reports from the white house, it is the latest in a series of actions in iran, stepping up tensions with the u.s. >> reporter: an iranian court is has convicted this american and sentenced him to death. amir hickmety is a former marine who worked in iraq and afghanistan as a translator. they say he got special training before he went into iran for what they call an intelligence mission. hickmattie father says his son is not a spy. he was visiting grandmrtses. hickmety was born in arizona. his family is originally from

iran. his family says they are shocked and terrified. the state department sent a strong message about hickmety's fate. >> we have maintained from the beginning that the charges against him were a fabrication. and we call on the iranian government to release him immediately. >> this is just the latest in a series of incidents that are escalating tensions between the u.s. and iran. his trial took place as the obama administration announced tough new sanctions, aimed at punishing iran. >> reporter: iran has stepped up its new efforts for enriching uranium. they say iran is producing uranium that could produce upgrades. the u.s. and its allies believe that is iran's real goal. but tehran insists its nuclear program is only for research and energy. the new sanctions against iran make it harder for the country to sell its oil. >> reporter: at the white house, tara mergener, week eyewitness news.

>> irain -- iranian officials have threatened to shut down the straight of hormuz. the utah doctor charged waives extradition and will come back to maryland on wednesday. new jersey doctor steven brigham are charged for allegedly performing late-term abortions at cecil county. police began their investigation on the two. it was not clear when dr. riley will be extradited back here. a baltimore family stages a protest today to demand justice in the shooting death of their son. >> justice. >> justice for who? >> schaub. >> reporter: today marks exactly one year since sean gamble was gunned down by a city police officer, during a fight outside the select lounge nightclub. the plain clothed officer who killed gamble was then shot accidentally to death by fellow officers. gamble's family said they still don't have a clear picture of how or why their son was

two people are killed when a bus overturns in montana. bus lost control after hitting an icy patch. the crash trapped several others underneath. at least 30 people were injured, including two who are currently listed in critical condition. also in montana, the search is on for a missing high schoolteacher, who vanished while she was running over the weekend. sherry arnold was last seen saturday in sydney.

police say a shoe that belong the to the 43-year-old was found near one of her regular running routes. national guard troops, and several others are aiding in the search. arnold has taught math for 18 years. a neighborhood watch letter is sparking outrage in cedar rapids. they are telling residents that the ku klux residents -- klan will protect them. the leaders of the fires say they are not meant to intimidate. as randall pinkston reports for wjz, the republican candidates are already looking ahead to the next big battle ground, south carolina. >> reporter: rick perry greeted diners and signed autographs, hoping for a boost before the south carolina piprear. -- primary. the texas governor skips new hampshire to make a start here. a state suffering from high unemployment. it's a problem perry says he knows how to fix. >> the rest of the country lost

2 million jobs during the period of time that we created a million jobs in my home state. >> reporter: in south carolina, it's nearly 10%. the lines are long at this job center. ken carnes lost his six-figure job as a financial adviser three years ago and has recently been working part-time in a grocery store. >> a seafood department as a seafood clerk. and i get anywhere from 5 to 10 hours a week, which isn't much. >> reporter: many people here can't even find part-time work. one in 10 don't even have a job. only seven other states have a higher unemployment rate than south carolina. >> reporter: carnes plans to vote for the candidate he thinks will better improve the economy. but he's not sure how long he can stay afloat, especially with a wife, child, and 3 grandchildren all livering together. >> it's not fulltime. and it's not the kind of income i need for my family. >> we are approaching 20 million people who are either unemployed or underemployed in

looking. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk are updating the forecast for us. let's see if the flakes are still falling. >> no. it has come to an end out here. that storm over the next few hours. that sets stage for tomorrow. and this is what we're looking at. we start out the day with sunshine returning. starting out around 30 degrees. and as we head through the afternoon, we warm back up again to around 50 for our high. temperatures will start to drop again tomorrow evening, setting the stage for yet another storm. for more on that, here's bob. looks like clouds come back wednesday. good chance for rain late in the day. that rain continuing into thursday morning. could see a half inch or more. 52, 52, 56. then it clears out, and gets chilly again. 43, 23. excuse me. 43, 21 on friday. only upper 30s for saturday. and again on sunday. mid- to upper 30s. but it should generally be sunny to partly cloudy sky.
