i'm kai jackson. mary is off. here's what people are talking about. breaking news, a man is trapped under a subway car, near lexington market. let's go to captain mike perry and sky sky eye chopper 13 for the latest. >> reporter: it occurred about 35 minutes ago, in the 300 block of west lexington street. this is right at saratoga at the subway station. can you see fire officials called to the scene of a report of a man trapped under a subway train. now, at this point, we know the man is conscious. they are attempting rescue. these things do take time. so they have to shut the third rail car off. to getac sess under -- to get access under the train. >> looks like most of the folks

have been asked to leave the area of the subway, as fire officials continue their rescue. at this point, it is not clear whether mva has established a bus bridge around the subway. and it appears that all the subway tracks, both east and westbound have been shut down here in the 1700 block of saratoga. we'll keep you updated. >> captain mike perry will be live. it is a moment natalee holloway's family has wanted for years. the prime suspect in the disappearance of their daughter pleads guilty to killing another woman. alison harmelin reports for wjz. joran van der sloot told the court in lima, peru he is, quote, really sorry for what happened. >> reporter: in spanish, he confessed to the panel of three women judges, that he robbed and killed 21-year-old stephany flores. the confession ends the trial that end the just last week and

gives van der sloot the possibility of a lighter sentence. van der sloot is well-known in the u.s. as the primary suspect in the disappearance of 18-year- old natalee holloway in aruba. his lawyers argued that the investigation left him traumatized. van der sloot met flores. and later admitted he snapped her neck when she got onto his computer and found information about the holloway case. lawyers for flores argue there should be some kind of payback for her life. they don'ting think the court will go easy on van der sloot because they think he could be a danger to society. >> reporter: van dervan der sloot's lawyer called his client deeply regretful of the murder. after court, van der sloot laughed with his attorney. he is expected to get life with

the possibility of parole after 10 years. >> holloway was from alabama and disappeared after a high school trip to aruba. van der sloot grew up in aruba. denise is in the newsroom with more on robert richardson iii. >> reporter: kai, too dangerous to release. that is the ruling today from a harford county judge. at a bail review hearing, robert richardson iii was held without bond. he was charged as an adult with first- and second-degree murder. police say the younger richardson confessed to the shooting and told them where to find his body. police have not yet established a motive for the killing. >> wjz was in the courtroom today. we'll have new details for the investigation coming up all new at 5:00 and 6:00. casey anthony is not

mentally ill. also in the report, anthony said she became pregnant with her daughter caylee after getting drunk at a party. she is serving probation at an undisclosed location on a check fraud charge. convicted of manslaughter. michael jackson's death. today, a judge is deciding how much money dr. conrad murray must pay to michael jackson's family. >> reporter: dr. conrad murray has already filed an appeal in his criminal case. now his attorney is making another move, kicking off a new battle over money. >> i don't think that he should be responsible for any restitution. >> reporter: murray's attorney, michael flanagan, has contested the amount he has to pay. >> for example, if you're 50% responsible for the death, that might be good enough for the causation to convict you of the

criminal offense. however, as far as the portion of the damages, you would only be responsible for the portion you were responsible for, such as the 50%. >> reporter: flanagan says michael jackson carries half the blame for his death. >> when it comes to restitution, the question comes down to, what percentage responsible are you? >> reporter: details of jackson's last minutes played out during his trial will now replay in the battle over restitution. also, being questioned, the true worth of jackson's estate. >> if you count the value of his assets, he's worth a negative $200 million. now, the estate has got a positive balance. >> reporter: just last week, murray handed over his medical certificate. >> dr. murray has stipulated to suspension of his medical privileges in texas and in nevada. >> reporter: but it's not permanent. murray can reapply for his medical license in a year.

no new evidence. the los angeles county sheriff's office says they had no new leads in the death of natalee holloway. they still consider -- of

economy slowed late last year. and the european commission says hungary has contained deficit. shares of super value has plunged 2%. they reported a bigger loss than expected because of high food prices and costs related to a turnaround. some of continental's nonstop flights are stopping to be refueled. dozens have been forced to make unexpected stops in canada and elsewhere, to fuel up after running into unusually strong winds headed over the atlantic ocean. the stops are partly a result by united continental, to use smaller jets on a growing number of long-haul flights. it's official. hostess has filed bankruptcy for a second time. the company has enough cash to keep the store stocked with breads and snacks. but longer term, hostess says it needs more from its unions.

that's your money watch. for more, head to cbsmoneywatch.com. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. >> let's update that breaking news. a man trapped under a subway train downtown. let's go back to captain mike perry, who is live over the scene in sky eye chopper 13. >> hello, kai. first, we want to correct the location. this is the 300 block of west saratoga at utah street. where a man was trapped underneath of a subway train. apparently that man has been rescued. we have video of the man being brought out to a waiting ambulance. initially, we were told that the man was conscious, underneath the train. firefighters had to shut down the third rail and the electricity to it before they could safely effect the rescue. he has been removed. he has still been evacuated from the subway station here at 300 west saratoga, at utah, as they -- it's not clear when -- correction, subway service, will be resumed here.

it's not snowing. it was cold this morning. we were in the 20s, but it warmed up quickly. winds came off the ocean. brought the clouds and moisture. take a look at radar. there's a batch of light rain across north central carolina. it's moving this way. and later tonight, it will get pretty damp. right now, spotty rain. heavier out to the west as you can see. and south of d.c. that's where the solid rain is from chrisfield to fredericksburg, richmond area. that's all going to move up in our general direction later tonight. probably after 7:00, i'll start seeing some of this heavier stuff. and it will be steady at times. maybe half an inch to inch of rain. but it's not going to be snowing as you see. eastern shore right now, dover, delaware, dry, dry. but that's going to change in a few hours as that rain moves up in your general direction. temperature-wise right now. we're stuck here mainly in the 40s. but earlier today, we did get up into the upper 40s. 45, 41, dew point. humidity, 85%.

east winds, 87. barometer just beginning to fall. 29.8 everyones. it's possible some of the mountain areas, at least some saw sleet. it's going to warm up. 40, hagerstown. 47, ocean city, pax river. today, dew points, 41. yesterday, when we had those flurries in a few spots. dew points are down in the upper 20s. so that made a difference. warmer air coming in. 45 in bel air. almost 50 now, annapolis, kent island, east winds, bringing that moisture in off the atlantic ocean. although generally mild conditions. that's a pretty big area of low pressure. pretty big storms. heavy rain across portions of illinois, into the carolinas, that's all moving up. you can see it, up the spine of the appalachians. so there's a lot of rain here in the carolinas, and in virginia that is moving up toward our region. tonight will be a wet night. but it will quickly end in the morning. and then we'll see, believe it or not, very mild conditions

rain. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. we have an update on breaking news. a man trapped under a subway downtown. meghan mccorkell is live downtown with more. >> we're live at the subway station. the subway station is still shut down right now. that's because just minutes ago, baltimore city firefighters pulled a man out from under a train right here. we have been talking to witnesses here in the area. they tell us that they were down on the platform. and they saw that man who was in a wheelchair, tip forward and fall onto the tracks. witnesses say the train was coming. they were screaming for the train to stop. but it was really too late. it ran over that man. now, firefighters do confirm for us, they did find a wheelchair down on the tracks. once firefighters got to the man who was under the train, they tell us that he was conscious, he was talking to them. firefighters were ability to free him -- able to free him from the train.

they had to drag him on a back board, underneath the train, more than a hundred feet to get him out. and that's why the rescue took so long. now, that man has been rushed to maryland shock trauma. firefighters tell us he had bruises and abrasions. right now, he's on his way to the hospital. again, we'll continue following the story for now. i'm meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> amazing story. of course, we'll have the latest on this breaking news, coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. a car bomb attack kills a prominent nuclear scientist in iran. now, iranian leaders are accusing another nation of ordering the hit. tina kraus reports for wjz on who is being blamed. >> reporter: security forces in tehran surround the -- surrounded the car in a deadly attack. police say two assailants on a motorcycle stuck magnetic bombs to the car of the nuclear scientist. >> reporter: i saw the bikes speed by, this witness said, they were wearing black hats and had something in their hands. authorities say the scientists

worked at a key nuclear facility. he is the fourth nuclear expert to die in a car bomb attack in two years. iranian officials accuse israel of dispatching hit squads to try to destroy its nuclear program. israeli officials deny the allegations but have hinted about covert campaigns. on tuesday, israel's military chief of staff said iran should expect more unnatural events in 2012. the u.s. and its allies are pressuring iran to stop enriching uranium. they believe it's being used to develop a nuclear bomb. but tehran contends its program is peaceful, designed only to produce electricity. >> reporter: tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, secretary of state hillary clinton is denying any u.s. role and the obama administration is condemning the attack. in the wake of a stunning

abuse scandal, the president of penn state is trying to reach to alumni. >> tonight's town hall meeting in pittsburgh is the first of three meetings, intended to let faculty and alumni voice their opinions on the scandal. they are still dealing with the fallout against former football coach jerry sandusky. two are also charged with perjury. the resulting scandal led to the ousting of iconic coach joe paterno. some alumni have criticized the school for failing to conduct an investigation before firing paterno and asking grant spaniard to step down. a cloudy, wet wednesday around around the state today. a live look outside right now. the rain has not been steady or heavy. but that's soon about to change. and bob is in the first warning weather center, tracking doppler radar. >> it's been spotty this

weather. for the updated forecast, and a look at live doppler radar any time, log onto wjz.com. a few hundred feet. that's how close two jets came to hitting each other at the airport in chicago. ntsb investigators want to know what happened and who is to blame. >> reporter: you can hear the southwest pilot's frustration. >> on the runway. plane was taking off. >> reporter: it's a question the air traffic controllers at midway airport did not answer. it followed a near collision of a southwest 737 and a private learjet on december 31st. the southwest jet had just landed in the national transportation safety board report says the pilot was told to cross 31 right. but it appears another told a learjet pilot to take off on the same runway. the report also states southwest copilot yelled for the pilot to stop. >> across 31 to the right. and learjet or something was

taking off. we had to hit our brakes. and the two went overhead. >> they narrowly missed each other. 287 feet above southwest's plane. >> you look at the size of these planes. anything below 300 to 400 feet is really, very, very close. >> reporter: it appears the mistake came from the control tower, a mistake that could have cost lives. >> at the very least, what should happen here? >> no doubt this regards more vigilance at midway to make sure we have the right controllers rested. >> 85 passengers and crewmembers were on board the southwest plane. no one was hurt on either flight. a solemn homecoming for a frederick soldier killed while serving in afghanistan. family and friends gathered to pay their respects to army specialist ronald wildrick this morning. police escorted his body to woods borough, where his funeral would be held tomorrow. specialist wildrick will be laid to rest at arlington
