a man falls onto the subway tracks in front of a horrified crowd. >> how crews raced to save his life. >> hello, everybody. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about tonight. >> wjz continues to follow breaking news. firefighters save a person, run over by a train at the lexington market subway station. a short time ago, a victim was rushed to shock trauma. wjz has the latest. meghan mccorkell has the latest on that. >> this was a daring rescue for firefighters who had to crawl on their stomachs, underneath that train to get to the man. >> reporter: witnesses saw a man fall right onto the tracks employs. >> when he tipped over. the train was coming. by a lot of us. trying to tell the train to stop. >> all i know is i heard them say the trin hit somebody. >> when firefighters arrived, i they found the man. he was conscious and talking to

them. they put him on a back board and worked to pull him out. they had to pull him by a rope, probably over 150 to 200 feet on the track to meet the train. >> reporter: the victim then rushed to maryland shock trauma. >> he did suffer someitutions, some abrasions of other musk low skeletal abraise brations. >> reporter: we are told that man was conscious. lexington market station is back open tonight. reporting live, meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: all right, thank you, meghan. and we'll bring you the latest on the victim's condition as the information becomes available. residents are on edge. two armed robberies in bolton hill in two weeks. suspects are still on the loose. and tonight, one victim speaks to eyewitness news. adam may has the latest on the gripping interview. >> that man recalls an hour of terror, begging for his life, now concerned for his neighborhood. >> i was getting stuff out of my car.

and these guys said hi to me. and i hear hey. and i turn around. and he's got a gun and he says to get down on the floor. >> reporter: this man tells wjz about the moment his life flashed before his eyes. >> then he said, you. i'm going to kill you. give me your wallet. and i said, i don't have it. at some point, me he makes me go in the house. he took the wallet. then goes into the bedroom and started stealing sweaters and clothes out of the closet. >> reporter: then the two robbers force him back into the car. >> they start driving him. >> i got nervous. and they said, come on, stop playing games. get in the car. >> reporter: eventually, they were caught on surveillance camera, using the man's atm card and pin. >> did you think they were going to shoot you? >> yeah. i didn't think they i was going to live. . >> reporter: finally, it ends.

>> i said, don't kill me. don't kill me. i turn around. they speed away. >> reporter: unfortunately, this isn't the only recent armed robbery here in bolton hill. another happened here early tuesday morning. >> reporter: in the 1200 block of park avenue, a man was just robbed at gunpoint by four men. police are looking to see if the crimes are connected. >> reporter: so what message do you have for anyone else that could find themselveses in a similar situation. >> the best thing to do is like keep the peace and do everything they say so you don't get them angry. >> reporter: baltimore police say they have increased patrols in the bolton hill neighborhood. but as of tonight, no leads in either unsolved robbery. reporting live, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. vic? >> adam, thank you. and metro crimestoppers is offering a reward of $200,000 for information that leads to an arrest. opening statements began today in the trial of lee

edward stevens. he's one of two prisoners, charged in the stabbing death of officer in 2006. he is eligible for capital punishment. it requires videotaped confession or scientific evidence, linking the defendant to the crime. a teen who admitted to killing his father won't be released. the 16-year-old remains behind bars. he admitted to shooting and killing his father, then dumping the body. weijia jiang has the latest on the update. >> reporter: that teenager is charged as an adult. in court today, he appeared very timid, polite and young. but prosecutors call him a serious danger to the community. >> reporter: 16-year-old robert richardson iii remains in police custody, after a judge ordered he be held without bail. richardson admitted to shooting his father to death on the 800 block of mooresville road in bel air. then dumping the lifeless body

into a pond. in court wednesday, the judge said the issue is too serious for bond to be considered. he also called richardson a flight risk, based on his actions after the shooting. police say he led them on ray high-speed chase -- a high- speed chase through harford county. >> when the trooper approached, the vehicle fled away from him, traveling through the town of bel air. >> reporter: richardson crashed into a cinder block wall, outside a bel air church. that's when he admitted to the murder and told officers he hid the body in a pond behind his uncle's aberdeen house. at the bail review, prosecutors also pointed to pending juvenile charges against rich sardson for breaking and entering. >> my motherly instinct told me something was wrong. >> reporter: neighbors suspect the teen acted out of desperation and say his father often acted out of fits of rage. >> towards his family. and he'd be working on something in the yard and just screaming and terrible cursing. and horribly, verbally abusive. >> reporter: charging documents

name richardson's sister as the one who alerted police to the shooling after she called her to tell her what was going on. she was in court as well and tells wjz, some of that report is false. >> reporter: richardson faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder. and because his confession was videotaped, he could be eligible to receive the death penalty. the judge advised him of that in court. in bel air, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: a preliminary trial for richardson is scheduled for next week. a hero's welcome in frederick county for a fallen maryland soldier. police escorted the flag-draped casket of ronald wildress to a funeral home. he was killed by an explosive device in afghanistan. he will be laid to rest at the arlington national cemetery, with full military honors. if you're looking for a new job, arundel mills might be an option. the half billion casino. it's located at 7270 park circle drive in hanover.

it will be open weekdays from 10:00 in the morning until 7:00 at night. they are looking to fill 1500 positions. but of course, you must be 21 to apply. it's back to work in annapolis. new taxes are one of the hot topics lawmakers will be forced to deal with for the next three months. derek valcourt has more. >> reporter: governor o'malley created a minor store here in -- story here in annapolis, when he said in an interview, if he had his druthers, he would raise sales tax rather than the gas tax. his spokespeople say he was speaking off the cuff and has no intention of raising sales tax. >> members, please take your seats. >> reporter: the general assembly rolls up their sleeves for what promises to be 90 days of contentious politics. chief among the topics here, the recommendation to raise the gas tax by 15 cents over three years, in order to pay for major transportation projects

the state doesn't have money for. >> the need is there. the public doesn't like tax increases. but that doesn't mean we don't try to raise the transportation trust fund. because it hasn't been raised since 1992. >> reporter: republicans blast the idea of a gas tax increase as out of touch with reality. >> i'm sure they got sugar plums and taxes dancing in their head every night. there's a tax and spend crowd in charge here. but that's the worst thing for this economy. >> for a gas guy, he's one of the most punishing. and the governor should take it off the table. >> reporter: another battle looming, same-sex marriage. supporters see this as their year to win approval in the general assembly, now that they have the full support of governor o'malley. >> the governor has weighed into it. and we'll see exactly where he believes he can help get some votes and educate some people on why we should have same-sex marriage in the state of maryland. >> reporter: but same-sex marriage opponents say they are

subway. eat fresh. in reisterstown, witnesses call police sarff someone witnesses something being thrown from a balcony. turns out, it is a yorkshire terrier. the dog barely survived. >> reporter: sunday night, police are called to these townhomes. >> a neighbor there reported that she saw a man launch an object from the gal balcony. >> reporter: it's the higher of the two. >> she heard this object land with a thud. and when she went over to investigate what it was, she found it was a small dog. >> reporter: the dog's name is louie. he's a 3-year-old york shire terrier. when police arrived, they say the dog fell. but police say louie was intentionally thrown. about how tall was that deck? i'm standing on top of the roof of wjz. i'm taking pictures with these small hand held camera. when thrown, it takes more than a second to reach the ground.

>> yeah. he's definitely a lucky guy. >> louie lives. his eye is bruised and red. teeth are missing. he was in a lot of pain. but louie lived. >> i think if it was just a few feet more, he may have expired due to the head trauma and the spinal trauma that he did sustain. but he was very, very lucky. >> reporter: lucky, too, he was found and taken to a pet emergency room. he is now on two painkillers. gary callas was arrested on the spot -- wallace was arrested on the spot. dr. randall lockwood can't talk about this specific case, but in general about animal abusers. . >> are often about power and control, someone who feels that they don't have enough control, don't have enough power. >> reporter: as for louie. >> reporter: he's not in pain right now. he's not uncomfortable either. >> reporter: but had a sharp- eyed neighbor not seen and heard what she did, louie probably would have died. >> reporter: in baltimore county, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. >> the man charged in the case, gary wallace junior, remains in

jail on $250,000 bond. a frederick county bus driver is being punished after driving home with a little girl sleeping on board. 5-year-old kiki myers, woke up in a parked bus outside the driver's home last week. she then went to the house and asked the driver to take her to school. officials say the driver has been taken off the route. after decades of struggle, a native american tribe in maryland is no longer extinct. alex demetrick reports, the tribe knew it was here all along. now the state finally agrees. >> reporter: one of the oldest catholic graveyards in the country overlooks the port tobasco river. land once home to the piscataway tribe. >> we supposedly all died out in 1999. and we couldn't figure out how did everyone die? >> reporter: it's a mistake they have been trying to set right. >> this was something that was kept from us that should have been done 20 or 30 years ago. >> reporter: actually, savoy's father and her mother started

heavier rain. ours will get spotty but there could be heavier echoes from time to time. tomorrow, all of this moves away. but there's a front out to the west. this is a pretty sharp cold front. temperatures have dropped. this front will cross our region friday morning. it gets breezy and colder. maybe just cold enough for a shower of rain or snow early friday. and then we'll see partly cloudy skies. it will continue to snow across portions of northern p.a. and new england with lake- effect stuff. garrett county also gets some snow as well. for our region, southwest winds tomorrow, keep us in very mild air. the bay temp, around 41 degrees. so tonight, rain. definitely at times, might be even hod -- moderate or heavy. breezy and much warmer, up to 60. then late tomorrow night, more clouds. a shower. and early friday morning. could change briefly to a few snowflakes or brief period of snow.

it is about 6:30. 45 degrees with light rain in central maryland. good evening. thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. the prime suspect in the aruba disappearance of natalee holloway, pleads guilty to killing another woman in peru. alison harmelin reports for wjz. >> reporter: joran van der sloot told the court he is, quote, really sorry for what happened. in spanish, he confessed to the panel of three women judges that he robbed and then killed 21-year-old stephany flores in 2010. the confession ends the trial that started just last week and

gives van der sloot the possibility of a lighter sentence. >> reporter: van der sloot is well known in the u.s. as the prime suspect in the disappearance of 18-year-old natalee holloway in aruba. the 24-year-old dutch citizen was arrested in aruba twice but never charged. and his lawyers argued that investigation left him traumatized. van der sloot met flores in a peyou've -- peruvian casino and got angry and snapped her neck when he learned that she had discovered his connection to the holloway case. >> reporter: lawyers say there could be some kind of payback for her life. they don't think the court will go easy on van der sloot because he could be a danger to society. >> reporter: van der sloot's lawyer call his client deeply regretful of the murder. af court -- after court, van der sloot laughed with his attorney. when he's sentenced, he is

expected to get 20 to 25 years behind bars, with the possibility of parole in 10 years. alison harmelin, wjz eyewitness news. >> holloway was from alabama and disappeared while on a high school graduation trip to aruba, where van der sloot grew up. a car bomb in iran kills a scientist. in the latest of a series of attacks there. police say two researchers stuck magnetic bombs to the motorcycle. security forces in tehran surrounded the car as witnesses looked on. >> reporter: i saw the bike speed by, this witness said, they were wearing black hats and had something in their hand. >> reporter: the scientist is the fourth to die in a nuclear bomb in four years. mitt romney wins new hampshire. and now, the race for the republican presidential nomination heats up in south carolina, ahead of that state's primary. randall pinkston reports with

drug bust at dulles international airport. customs officers arrested a nigerrian man. they became suspicious while inspecting the man after he arrived in ghana. an x-ray revealed pellets in the man's abdomen. a teen driver is hoping his voice is heard in washington as he asks lawmakers to pass tougher highway safety laws. tara mergener has the latest. 17-year-old joe pelockowitz had only been driving for two months. >> although i remember the crash, the first few months of

being in the hospital. i just know how lucky i am to be here today. >> reporter: joe slammed into a tree in 2010. suffering a brain injury, broken back, pelvis and rib. >> it's been horrible going through what i have been through. >> reporter: she's now working with the advocates for highway and auto safety, fighting to get tougher safety laws for the road. >> reporter: the group is calling on states to pass 15 laws, covering everything from seat belts, booster seats and motorcycle helmet rules to restrictions on teen drivers and texting behind the wheel. >> reporter: every year, about 33,000 people die in crashes across the u.s. and over 2 million more are injured. >> reporter: ad -- advocates say putting tougher safety laws in place will make a difference. >> we know that this will save lives and save the state's money. and we like to see them be more aggressive and serious about getting the job done. >> reporter: joe says tougher laws, including increasing the driving age to 18 might have saved him a lot of heartache.

here on wjz. now, if the ravens can win on sunday, they will go on to play the winner of the denver new england game. if the patriots win that game, the afc title game will then be played in foxboro. so the ravens certainly are rooting for an upset. tim tebow and the broncos pulled off what many call a huge upset when they beat the pittsburgh steelers in the wildcard round. the broncos are a two-touchdown underdog when they take on new england. everybody likes the cinderella story. tebow and the broncos aren't thinking about winning a championship. they're just enjoying the ride so far. >> no. it's definitely not super bowl or bust. i think you have to -- that's why i'm talking about enjoying the journey. you have to just have fun every day. and that was a lot of fun on sunday. but enjoy it. and enjoy the blessings that we have. and not just look forward to the destination. but i'm having fun every day. and, you know, whatever
