grave mistake. pictures of marines in afghanistan, desecrating taliban corpses. what the pentagon is saying about the scandal. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. mary is off today. here's what people are talking about. outrage in the united states and in afghanistan. disturbing video and pictures shows u.s. marines urinating on the bodies of taliban fighters. tara mergener reports for wjz, it's now a real ncis investigation. >> reporter: the 42nd video posted on you tube appears to show four marines urinating on three dead bodies, presumably taliban fighters. >> have a great day, buddy.

>> reporter: the men seem to know they're being recorded. the video has the u.s. doing damage control. >> anyone -- anyone found to have participated or known about it, having engaged in such conduct, must be held fully accountable. >> reporter: defense secretary leon pineta released a statement saying, i have seen the footage and i find the behavior depicted in it utterly deplorable. pineta called afghan president hamid karzai to discuss. karzai says the video is completely inhumane. and they called on the united nation to stop what it calls the bar barbaric acts. american soldiers that go against all norms. the u.s. military is trying to avoid another scandal like abu ghraib. american soldiers were captured

in photos, demeaning afghan soldiers. >> reporter: already strained relationships in afghan now for 10 years. >> reporter: commanders believe they have identified those involved and say the marines are no longer serving in afghanistan. two of the four were based in north carolina. all face court-martials for violating military rules that forbid photographing human casualties. >> at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> it's still not clear who shot that video or who posted it online. an alleged sex assault on a cruise ship from baltimore. andrea fujii is live with more on what police say happened on royal caribbean's enchantment of the sea. >> reporter: a 25-year-old royal caribbean employee is indicted on sex abuse of a minor. the alleged incident occurred when the ship left baltimore. on december 23rd, a 14-year-old girl told police she was alone on the ship's deck and

encountered fabian palmer. she said he took her into the bathroom and started having sex with her. according to her, he stopped when another employee knocked on the door. they believe she was 16 years old. >> andrea, thank you. last year, several royal caribbean employees were indicted on charges of smuggling heroin and cocaine on board a baltimore-bound cruise ship. a man arrested for drunkenness on new year's eve is behind bars. he escaped from police because an officer was trying to arrest him. and he was attacked by another man. it happened in east monument and north row streets. the entire video was caught on tape by a witness. police say he's now in jail, charged with escape, assault, and resisting arrest. startling new details. a judge unseals new documents

in the casey anthony trial. in the disposition, anthony says she believes her father, george, drowned casey in the family pool. >> reporter: when psychiatrist jeffrey danzeinger interviewed her in jail, her friendly and unpleasant demeanor was unlike anything she had ever seen, especially considering the horror stories she was about to tell him. for the first time on record, anthony claimed she had been repeatedly raped by her father george, between the ages of 8 and 11, and that her brother lee had also snuck into her room and touched her. fearing the same thing would happen to her daughter, she said she often slept in the same bed and locked the door. on the morning of june 6, 2008, anthony said she was awakened by her father. she said that she did not see him in the swimming pool, but

instead saw her father george, holding the wet wetbody. >> this is a sad, tragic accident that is out of control. >> reporter: although they claimed that caylee drowned accidentally, she told the psychiatrist, she thought her father molested and hurt her daughter. she said, i think he was trying to hold her under the water. over the next days, she said she did everything to pretend all was well. in fact, anthony claims she thought caylee might have been still alive. what did dr. danziger think of her story? he shared his opinion. -- he never shared his opinion. he just said, this is just what she told me. >> reporter: a short time ago, george anthony released a statement saying he has never

harmed any member of his family in any way. sun helping to dry up last night's heavy rainfall. but big changes are on the way. bob is in the first warning weather center, tracking live radar. >> we have a front out to the west of us. got cold air behind it. it's going to get progressively colder over the next couple of days. pretty chilly weekend. but we're at 66 degrees now. take a look at temperatures around the state. just jumped to 57. 57 in washington. 41 in oakland. the cold air will come in aftermidnight the front comes through. maybe a shower of rain. maybe even a wet snowflake, north and west of town. garrett county, definitely going to see snow accumulations by tomorrow afternoon. as far as rainfall amounts, most areas picked up just three- quarters of an inch. and yes, there is rainfall. a little less in the eastern shore in southern maryland. but around the central portion of the state, most places picked up about an inch or so. airport, 1.10 inches of rain.

be life-threatening. a popular downtown restaurant is open for dinner tonight, after a fire forced them to shut down. that fire broke out yesterday afternoon. firefighters quickly put out the flames. but it was enough damage that the restaurant closed for the evening to close up -- clean up. no one was hurt. let's check on the traffic with kristy breslin at traffic control. hi, kristy. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. definitely not a good day on 95. you can see between 395 and caton avenue, a three-vehicle accident had all lanes block the. but it is being cleared up at this time. and you should be able to get through without any problem in about the next 15 minutes. as far as the rest of northbound 95 goes, as you can see, we have delays there as well. that's from pulaski highway to the beltway on that northeast corner. southbound 95, an accident we're watching there at the bw

attack happened in bergen county, as a rabbi, his wife, and five children were sleeping inside. one of the fire bombs was thrown through a bedroom window. fortunately, nobody was hurt. detectives found several other explosive devices, including other fire bombs and aerosol cans. none had been lit. dramatic new video is released of the tsunami that hit japan. this is video from a helicopter. you can see the water rushing into the port, in taking homes with it. that tsunami was the result of an 8.9 earthquake that struck off the coast of northeastern japan. dramatic video. wow. washington, d.c.'s public transit system is in hot water, following the release of dozens of shocking collisions and

close call, all caught on videotape. brian todd has details and the video. >> reporter: brace yourself. on the right side of your screen, you're about to see a pedestrian get hit by a bus. [ car honking ] >> oh, no! oh, no. >> reporter: the pedestrian, we're told, wasn't seriously injured. here, a bus slams into an suv, stopped in a school zone. >> whoa! >> deja vu, another hits an suv at an intersection with a child nearby. clip after clip, all close calls. all involving metro buses from washington, d.c. cnn's radio station got the documents through a public records request. the state said it got 134 near- collision videos. and dozens showing actual collisions and violations, to cover a two-month period last summer. they're recorded on a device called drive cam. in some of them, the incidents are clearly not the fault of

the bus dryer -- drivers. but in at least three of the clips, buses are shown running red lights. look at this near miss. >> i mean, that's pretty egregious, right? >> it is egregious. and it is clearly the inattention of the driver here. >> they clearly need to have more trains if you have examples like this. and there are a couple of these. >> reporter: metro bus official jack riquasays the training is excellent, that their drivers have an exceptional safety record, especially considering what they're up against. >> we carry about 543,000 passengers on a given weekday. we have the challenge with pedestrians, double-parking, the events that are taking place, construction, but the numbers are getting better. we think the program works. >> that is brian todd reporting. several metro bus drivers who were reporting on the street, wouldn't comment about their

[ stock bells ringing ] >> after a slow start, the markets end in positive territory. s&p up 3. nasdaq up 14. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. applications for unemployment benefits spiked last week. but economists say that's typical in early january, when companies let go of thousands of workers after the holiday season. weekly applications rose by 24,000 to just under 400,000. it's the highest level in six weeks. americans were in a buying mood last year. the government says retail sales jumped 8% in 2007 to a record 4.7 trillion. that's the largest increase since 1999. but sales from december were low and lower than analysts expected. average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 3.89%,

while the rate on a 15-year ticked down to 3.16%. and realty track says about 1.9 million homes entered foreclosure in 2011. the lowest level since the recession began in 2007. but analysts warn those numbers are misleading because legal issues delayed the process for many homeowners. analysts expect a flood of foreclosures in the coming months as that backlog of wairp work is processed. -- of paperworkis processed. one of hollywood's hottest couples makes a stop at the white house. here's a glimpse inside the oval office, as brad pitt and angelina jolie meet with president obama. pitt and jolie were in town to view the new film. jolie spoke with the president about her advocacy work during that visit. coming up on "eyewitness news at 4:00", fergie is in

tomorrow. right now, 46 in cumberland. 41 in oakland. that's where the cool air is just beginning to filter in. and it's just going to be hitting western maryland and eventually all through the region, overnight, after midnight, front comes through. we'll see? showers. maybe in north and west of town, those showers could mix with, even change briefly to a little bit of wet snow. but the ground is so warm, i really don't expect too much out of it. but you might see some snowflakes north and west of the city. garrett county, allegheny, definitely the mountain areas. we'll see snow tomorrow as the cold air comes in. 51 in ocean city. locally, once again, everybody way above normal. the only cooler air is close to the bay, 48. annapolis. and kent island. because the bay is so chilly. southwest winds ahead of this front. now, once the front comes through, our winds tomorrow get strong, coming out of the west/northwest. and that will bring in very chilly air for the weekend. tomorrow, basically, we're talking in the 30s in the afternoon. you may get up to as high as

the low 40s to begin with. and then temperatures will be falling. big area of low pressure kind of spinning in the upper atmosphere. cold front with snow out there. in portions of wisconsin and illinois. chicago may pick up their first significant snow of the year, 3 to 5 inches. that front is going to cross our region tonight. it's actually going through portions of ohio and kentucky. but what's happening is, it's really going to bring in a bit of a west wind first, before the really chilly air gets in. we'll see some showers late tonight. and then tomorrow, as the chilly air moves in. garrett county, the western mountains, we'll see that lake- effect snow move in. look at that clear skies and very mild temperatures this afternoon. that mild temperature tonight will be with us until about midnight. the front comes through. the winds go back. and there comes the chilly air. and much colder saturday and second. -- sunday. for the game on sunday, temperatures only in the mid to low 30s. cold are but dry weekend expected. winds up to 35 knots and the gale warning on the bay

it's 4:30. 57 degrees and sunny. hello, everyone. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. >> caught in the crossfire a french journalist is killed in syria. violent protests have plagued the country for the last 10 months. not shaky cell phone video this time, but recorded by foreign news cameras. a mortar attack, on civilians. it killed one french journalist and eight syrian residents in

the neighborhood. just 20 minutes earlier, we had been in the same place, on our tour, organized by the syrian government of homes at the epicenter of the uprising. >> there are attacks every day, the people told me. and in a hospital a few steps away, lay the proof. ordinary pem brought -- people brought down by extraordinary violence. who is responsible? our monitors wouldn't let us out of theirite cite to investigation -- their sight to investigate. but it is complicated. the protest rose 10 months ago. but they degenerated to something that looks very much like civil war. activists and looked. some opposition groups have now got weapons and they're attacking the army. in the military hospital, 25 wounded soldiers on average arrive every day. in the capital damascus

yesterday, a defiant syrian president greeted adoring supporters. he blamed all of the violence on a foreign plot. his solution, what he calls an iron fist. >> it's not clear exactly what that means, but some areas of syria are under the control of armed opposition groups. this is already a divided country, full of fear, guns and anger. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, damascus. the u.n. estimates that more than 5,000 protestors have been killed in syria since march. it is a national day of remembrance, as haiti marks two years since a deadly earthquake devastated that country. kai is in the newsroom with more. >> denise, men and women walked to church in dark suits and white dresses through quiet services -- streets today. memorial services were held in port-au-prince. the quake killed 300,000 people

and displaced millions. about 500,000 are still in temporary camps. >> it will take several decades to rebuild haiti. and a crowd of angry alumni in a town hall meeting. most of them focused on the child sex abuse scandal. >> how could the board have not had a crisis plan? she was last seen with joran van der sloot, who was arrested twice and never charged. wednesday, van der sloot pleaded guilty to killing another woman in peru. police are looking for answers after a bizarre attack in one of the safest neighborhoods in bethesda. andrea fujii has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: police are shocked alt how brazen this home invasion was. now they're looking for the man involved. police say the suspect broke into this house, threatened the housekeeper with a gun, then tied her up, along with the mom and teenage son who were inside. the man then rummaged through the home and sexually assaulted the housekeeper. the attack has neighbors terrified. >> i don't know how someone can recover their trust after something like this. it's very scary for all of us to know that we're not safe. >> reporter: the man also stole the housekeeper's bank card and used it at an atm in washington, d.c. denise? >> police have not said if the victims knew their attacker. maryland is getting

millions of dollars in federal money to repair damage left by tropical storm lee last summer. the state highway administration is getting $6.8 million to fix roads and damage during lee. most of the money will go toward three projects, which will go to westbound route 100 in anne arundel county. no severe weather in maryland today. in fact, it feels a little more like april than january. but that is about to change. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is tracking first warning doppler radar. bob? >> big changes headed our way. today, spring like as well. take a look at radar. there are a bunch of showers from the west of us, along that front. that front will be here by midnight. it will probably bring you rain showers. still quite warm. and the ground is warm. but north and west of town, if it gets cold enough quick enough, there can be snow north and west of the city. overnight into the early morning hours. garrett county is guaranteed to have snow. but looks like they'll have good skiing. 39 in oakland. 57 here, d.c. in easton.

51 in ocean city. take a look at some of the rain from last night and yesterday. most areas, or rather central maryland, picked up three- quarters so a little over an inch. up in garrett county, a little under an inch. eastern shore, about two-thirds of an inch. a wet, wet night. but a dry, beautiful day. colder air headed out for the weekend. if you're heading out to the ravens game sunday. sun and clouds, breezy and 33 degrees. denise? >> but you won't care because you're going to be so excited. you won't mind if it's raining. thank you, bob, let's check on the roads with kristy breslin. not a good start for northbound 95. we have some footage from sky eye chopper 13 that was over the scene of the accident. it was an overturned vehicle. northbound 95, between 395 and caton avenue. what a delay that caused. the delay was up to about 25 minutes. that has been cleared but there still is a little bit of a slowdown if you're traveling in that area. as far as the rest of 95, 95

hacking scandal with murdoch's news of the world. more than a dozen journalists have been arrested for hacking. north korea announces the body of their leader, kim jong- il, will be enshrined. he will join his fathers in a north korea palace. they also plan to build statues across the country to symbolize his immortality. his birthday will hence forth be known as the day of the shining star. a group of american students escapes the fire in pruses brussels. >> reporter: well, vic, the college student from bethel university were studying abroad when it went up in flames. crews believe it started on one of the upper floors, and firefighters worked to avoid letting flames spread to a nearby hospital. luckily, no one escaped and no one was injured. university officials say

students were able to get their luggage and belongings, including passports from the ruins. the burned hostile made arrangements for students to stay in another hostel nearby. >> she was able to somehow get out of the car when it crashed. rescuers pulled her and the vehicle from the water. she was conscious but disoriented and taken to the hospital. police are now investigating. a young mother who shot and killed an intruder in oklahoma will not be facing charges. but the dead man's accomplice, dusty stewart, will. >> have you had reports of somebody firing shots and getting shot, breaking and entering or anything? >> yes. who is this? >> my name is dusty stewart. and i think that it was my friend that got shot. i don't know. >> reporter: 29-year-old stewart is charged with first- degree murder in the death of his friend, justin shane

martin. stewart called police after he heard gunshots in the house that he and martin were attempting to rob. authorities justified the woman's shooting because it was clear she acted in self- defense. investigators say a woman in ohio deliberately set fire at a local wal-mart. >> reporter: flames, shooting to the ceiling, inside a wal- mart. clothing doesn't just catch on fire. tuesday with the store bustling, a shopper sent men's clothing on fire. who is she? >> went across. as soon as i got here. everybody was like, it's a fire. it's a fire. >> we're trying to identify her. and if you look at this, this would have been a -- could have been a far worse fire. >> gotta find that fire bug. they're hoping you know her. an employee hit the flames with a fire extinguisher. then the woom just took off in her car. >> arson said if nobody had any dealings that would indicate some grudge against the store. we're not sure.

>> everybody was running out the door with stuff. >> so what did you do? >> me, i was in the store. so i ran out with them. i was like, what is going on? >> when i went in yesterday, i tried to get to the bank. >> reporter: not a huge fire. but think again about about how customers had their lives put in danger. at least disrupted. you can't let someone that angry or evil get away with it. one close look at the mystery shopper. one more look at her car. >> i think it was a way of getting out of some money. >> reporter: now, one wal-mart worker suffered minor burns and a customer inhaled smoke. both refused to be taken to the hospital. and police are searching for the suspects. parents are outraged at a connecticut school for using a discipline, called scream rooms. the school sentenced students with behavior problems. with no windows to let out their aggressions. students yell and allegedly bang their heads on the walls and urinate inside the rooms. parents were voicing their concerns at a middletown school

board meeting. a bus brawl was caught on tape. one passenger put out his phone to capture the fight on video. you can see the passenger attacking the dark driver. the bus company placed a driver on leave, pending the investigation. the 23-year-old passenger is being held on $100,000 bond. police are not sure what caused the fight to escalate. just a few months ago, there was a scare about dangerous chemicals in apple juice. but now there's a potential problem with orange juice. alexis christoforous reports for wjz in tonight's consumer watch. >> reporter: it was coca cola that blew the whistle. the company alerted the food and drug administration that it found a bad fungicide in both its own orange juice brand and in others. >> it makes me not want to drink orange juice for a while. >> reporter: the chemical is banned in the u.s. but brazilian farmers use it. and the juice gets sold into brands in the u.s.

federal officials say it is not so far a safety concern. so they have not issued a recall. >> if they force a recall for something that they consider safety related, there is a huge amount of economic disruption. who is going to pay for all of those products that get pulled from the market? >> reporter: for consumers who want to avoid imported orange juice, there is a way to check. federal law requires that requires that cartons contain a label that says where the juice comes from. >> reporter: while consumer -- investigators continue inspecting the product, the u.s. has attempt rarely banned things from foreign countries. >> you have to be aware. >> reporter: just a couple of months ago, studies turned up arsenic and led. leading them to call for stricter standards and better enforcement. >> we should be able to better drink these products and eat these food and be confident that their safety is fine. >> their squeeze on imports
