marines desecrating bodies. hamid karzai calls the video inhumane. leon panetta said it could endanger peace talks with the taliban. the marines promise an internal and criminal investigation of the matter. tara mergener has our report. >> referee: membe the act would violate international laws of war. it's not clear if the dead were taliban fighters, civilians or someone else. but at least two of the marines seen in the video have been identified. several more may be in trouble. >> anyone, anyone found to have participated or known about it, having engaged in such conduct must be held fully accountable. >> defense secretary leon panetta condemned the video saying, i have seen the foot anl and i find the behavior depicted in it utterly deplorable. he also spoke with hamid karzai who called the video completely

two brigades will be withdrawn from europe. fort bliss, texas yesterday, it consists of 3,000 to 4,000 troops. it's part of a broader redirection of u.s. forces. the u.s. plans to begin rotating units in and out of europe. to politics. a group is holding a meeting in texas starting today deciding whether to back mitt romney or somebody else. the south carolina primary just nine days away, there's pressure on romney's opponents to tone down the criticism of his business dealings. we go to ines ferre in washington with more. good morning, terrell. one of the contenders pressured to tone down his attacks is newt gingrich. even though yesterday he didn't repeat his criticism of mitt romney's business record, he did defend his right to question it. newt gingrich is pulling out all the stops against his biggest rival. >> massachusetts moderate mitt romney. he'll say anything to win. >> in a new web ad, he blasts mitt romney comparing him to

working. new polls show romney's lead shrinking in south carolina. however, a number of republicans have rallied around mitt romney after the recent attacks against him, including the head of the u.s. chamber of commerce and also former new york city mayor, rudy giuliani. they say that the recent attacks against mitt romney undermine the free market principles of their party and their chief argument against president obama. terrell? ines ferre in washington for us. thank you. house republicans will vote next week on president obama's latest request to increase the debt limit of the nation. yesterday the president asked congress for another $1.2 trillion in an increase that would boost the debt limit to sf$.4 trillion enough to allow the government to keep borrowing until after the election. cbs money watch, missed signs of the housing bubble burst and a radioactive recall by bed, bath and beyond. doesn't sound good. ashley morrison with more. good morning, terrell. in overseas trading, the nikkei

had a one-week high finishing higher than more than 1%. hang seng rose more than half a percent also. investors on wall street are anxious to hear the earnings report from jpmorgan chase this morning. it's the first of the big banks to announce fourth quarter results. stocks finished higher on thursday. the dow added 21 points and the nasdaq gained nearly 14. newly released documents show a federal reserve officials did not see the collapse of the housing market coming. transcript from 2006 meetings reveal that chairman ben bernanke and other fed officials, including treasury secretary timothy geithner failed to recognize the risk of falling home prices. the collapse of the housing market a year later helped trigger the great recession. applications for unemployment benefits rose last week to their highest level in six weeks. the spike can be attributed to the loss of thousands of seasonal jobs. but there is encouraging news. home depot is planning to hire 70,000 seasonal workers

beginning in the spring. the failed solar panel maker solyndra wants to give its workers bonuses. the company is asking a judge to approve $500,000 to give to up to 21 employees. solyndra says the bonuses are necessary to keep those workers. the company received a half billion dollar loan from the federal government before declaring bankruptcy. bed, bath and beyond is recalling metal tissue holders because they contain a low level of radioactive material. the recall effects the dual ridge metal boutique tissue holder. it's been sold in about 200 stores and more than 20 states. a spokesperson from the nuclear regulatory commission says the product poses little health risk but that it's better to simply avoid any unnecessary radiation. and target is taking aim at shoppers with more upscale tastes. the retailer announced it will start featuring products from specialty shops and boutiques starting in spring.

cold last night in a city park west of downtown. a snowstorm dumped several inches on the windy city. and much of the great lakes region. there weren't just kids in there. there were plenty of adult. did you see that? wasn't just fun at games at chicago airports yesterday as the winter storm blew through. thousands of travelers found themselves stranded for hours. the snow forced hundreds of cancellations, especially flights bound for the east coast. as for the satellite map, as it shows here. it's far from over. over the next 48 hours, there will be heavy accumulations if michigan to new england. especially in the lake effect regions of northern ohio, pennsylvania and new york. reaching as far south as virginia. mo one in the lower 48 states has seen anything like this. it's been the snowiest winter in alaska. east of anchorage, they've seen the worst of it. alaska national guardsmen are helping to clear snow there. on the second anniversary of

the earthquake that devastated haiti the prime minister said it's a place where people bury the dead and go back to work. a ceremony was held yesterday north of port-au-prince. the disaster killed more than 300,000 people. bill clinton announced the $2 million donation from the reconstruction fund that he leads. natalee holloway of suburban birmingham, alabama was 18 years old when she was last seen in aruba in may of 2005 she'd been missing ever since. >> edward lawrence reports. a judge called this court hearing a sad occasion. right before he officially declared natalee holloway dead. her father asked for the declarati declaration. >> we've been dealing with her death for the last six and a half years. hopefully this meeting today will kind of put some closure on it. >> dave hol we, her father needs a death certificate for a $2,000 college fund can be used to send
