off of italy's west coast. it ran aground friday close to shore. the conduct of the captain is being questioned and is the focus of the investigation. 4200 people were on board. we now know this morning a sixth person was found dead. 16 others are still missing, including two americans, gerald and barbara heil of minnesota. their daughter says they've been looking forward to their vacation. >> my parents always wanted to travel. you know, they raised four kids and they sent them all to private school throughout, elementary to college so they never had any money. so they wanted to, when they retired, they went traveling and this was going to be a big deal. it was going to be a 16-day trip. so they were really excited. >> the captain is being held on suspicion of manslaughter. passengers said he abandoned ship before everyone else was evacuated. anna matranga has more. >> reporter: rescue teams used a helicopter to lift out a third

survivor from a damaged luxury cruise liner along the coast of italy. he was a crew member on the costa concordia who screamed for help while emergency workers checked the ship for survivors on sunday. divers also found the bodies of two elderly men trapped in an emergency gathering area with their life vests still on. the cruise laner started to tip over on friday after it hit a rock, causing a 160-foot hole in the hull. owners of the ship said in a statement sunday, it appears their captain, francesco schettino made several human errors that led to the accident including taking the ship too close to shore. the captain denies he did anything wrong, saying. >> translator: the rocks were not marked on his map and the ship shouldn't have hit anything. >> reporter: there are also kes questions about the evacuation process. survivors say the rush to get on lifeboats friday night was chaotic. >> people were getting on them.

make it official in south carolina, nearly a week after he finished third in new hampshire's primary. >> i want to beat expectations like we did in new hampshire. >> reporter: huntsman gave no sign he was planning to back out earlier this weekend telling reporters it's too soon to predict how he'll do on saturday. >> the lay of the land changes considerably. >> reporter: he always admitted expectations in south carolina were low. a recent poll showed him with only 4% support, putting him behind even comedian stephen colbert. >> i'm doing it! >> reporter: huntsman endorsement may not help romney where he needs it most, among social and evangelical conservatives. >> the people of south carolina vote their conscience. >> rick santorum is going after that vote. he got a boost over the weekend when a group of social cops tiff leaders decided to back him as an alternative. newt gingrich was their second choice ahead of rick perry.

al qaeda militants captured a small town south of the yemeni capital. the al qaeda fighters moved in saturday night facing little resistance. the town is surrounded, residents are not allowed to leave or come in. this is the latest town al qaeda has taken over in yemen since the up rising against the president began over a year ago. more deadly sectarian violence in iraq. a car bomb exploded in mosul. the target was a housing complex. at least eight people were killed. four others were wounded. yesterday a car bomb killed seven policeman in the anbar province 70 miles west of baghdad. 13 others wounded. gunmen battled into a government compound and led to the first battle between insurgents and iraqi forces without the backup of american troops. meanwhile, in an unexpected move, syrian officials released political prisoners. they were set free sunday evening. they said they were given ten minutes' notice. they are part of the thousands

continue to fall in some areas through this morning. as much as a foot accumulated in the higher elevations. an advisory was in effect for much of receipt john. in sports, what an upset. the giants trounce the packers in green bay. new york had everything going their way, hakeem nicks goes up high and pulls down this hail mary pass at the end of the second. that puts new york up by ten. the giants d was on fire too. aaron rodgers gets sacked four times that forced the packs to cough up the ball three times. new york takes down the super bowl champs 37-20. it didn't surprise giants coach tom coughlin. >> we did know that some of the things we were able to do were in indicative that we could play with them and as we prepared this week, we felt the exact same way. we look forward to coming in and playing, as i said, and our players were excited about it. >> kind of top of the mountain and you forget how bad this feel is. after the 2009 season, we lost to arizona.

in some cities in the country. d.c., partly sunny, 42 degrees. partly sunny and 55 in atlantament afternoon showers in detroit and 40. 44 in denver. mostly cloudy, 37 degrees in seattle. here's another look at the top stories. the search continues inside that capsized cruise ship just off the coast of italy. at least six people are known to have died, 16 others, including two americans are missing. the owners of the ship say there appears to be significant mistakes made by the captain. today jon huntsman is dropping out of the race for the republican nomination. huntsman plans to endorse mitt romney. there's a battle going on in south carolina over that state's controversial new voter i.d. laws. voters in nine states are already subject to these laws set to prevent voter fraud. critics say it faces a burden on young, low income voters. jeff glor report. >> it wasn't directed at

minority. it was directed at the process. >> republican state senator larry martin sponsored south carolina's photo i.d. law, he says to protect the integrity of elections. >> i don't think you wait until there is a problem before you act. >> his state the goal? stopping voter praud. >> i know we didn't intend for it to be discriminatory. >> attorney general eric holder says it is discriminatory. because black voters are 20% more likely than white voters to lack a drivers license or state photo i.d. card. 73-year-old junior glover is one of them. he's voted for decades but he doesn't have a birth certificate, which is required to get the new i.d. >> do i want to still vote? right or wrong. >> critics say the i.d. law is a solution in search of a problem. >> voter fraud in south carolina is a rare instance. it is not rampant. >> he has run elections in

greenville county for 20 years. >> this is the voter registration list that is used. >> he says a typo or clerical error on a voting record is sometimes misconstrued as fraud. >> the election process in south carolina at least appears to be extremely clean over the entire state. >> but state motor vehicle's director points out that 37,000 dead people are still on the state's voter registration list. and then he discovered this. >> at least 956 individuals voted after they were dead or more realistically, people voted using their name and/or credentials. >> he can't say where or when it occurred. he's passed the information along to state investigators. for now, the state's photo i.d. law won't apply in next week's presidential primary. it's on hold pending the justice department review. >> i certainly do not want it to

be an impediment to anybody that wishes to vote. we just want to make sure that these folks are who they say they are. >> attorney general holder is expect today address the controversy at a rally on monday. search operations continue in beirut lebanon following a deadly building collapse. it collapsed yesterday killing at least 11. most of them foreigners. residents say the shake and pounding from a nearby construction site could have weakened the foundation of their building causing that collapse. and nome, alaska is about to get fuel. a russian tanker is within half a mile of the frozen city. the crew must drag a hose into town. to complicate matters, the fuel can only be dumped during the day. at this time of year, nome only has about five hours of daylight. residents haven't had a fuel delivery since november after a massive snowstorm. coming up later on "cbs this morning," we'll hear from survivors of that italian cruise ship disaster. i'm terrell brown, this is the
