are more excited than ever. first sports director mark viviano is live at the practice facility, where he spoke with the team moments ago. >> reporter: how are you doing kai. you can go back to august and even then the ravens were talking about the goal of reaching the super bowl. now here we are in january and they are within one step of that ultimate goal but standing in the ravens way is a team that some consider the ultimate opponent. the new england patriots. the ravens admit they didn't play great in their home play off win against the texans. but they did take advantage to top the texans. there's no rookie qb in new england, there's tom brady. maybe the best passer in nfl history and the ravens are shifted their thoughts to the

and hope is fading for finding survivors. >> reporter: rescue crews flashlights as they look for those missing in the concordia. search teams are still looking for more than two dozen people including an american couple from minnesota. divers are entering the submerged parts of the boat while firefighters go cabin to cabin up top. rescue operations are based here in gilio, the teams work in six hour shifts because the work is so dangerous. the costa concordia is resting on its side and continues to shift. the ship started to tip over friday night when it hit a rock that tore a 150-foot hole in the hub. costa cruise line's ceo says

captain francisco scacino miscalculated. >> this was a human error here. the captain did not follow the authorized route. >> reporter: scacino faces several charges including manslaughter and abandoning ship. they jailed captain scacino because there was a concern there might be an attempt to tamper with evidence. crews are laying floating pipelines around the costa concordia in case 540-gallons of fuel on board starts to leak. wjz eyewitness news. the american embassy in rome is asking for help in the search for the missing couple from the united states. they've asked people to e-mail them with any information. police are trying to identification a body that washed up today near annapolis. denise is in the newsroom with more on this investigation, denise. >> mary, the body washed ashore this morning. natural resources police say it happened along chesapeake driver. sky high chopper 13 is south of

annapolis. the medical examiners office is now performing an autopsy to find out how the person died. right now it's not even clear if it's a man or a woman. >> police expect to learn more after an autopsy. occupy baltimore is back. the protesters a sparking a rally and setting up a camp. wjz is live in east baltimore, mike hellgren is here and explains the group's new message. good evening mike. >> good evening kai. this is as confrontational as we've seen protesters get with police. as you can see they've set up a tent. if you look over to the side you can see some of them have erected a makeshift school building on this particular state owned sight. they are upset about a jail that's going to be erected here. what we're seeing is lots of police. there's a state incident command center, there are dozens of city police officers and we're waiting to see what

happens next as this is not over. >> reporter: police were waiting for more than 70 occupy protesters as they tried to break into a lot that would soon be a juvenile jail. >> commanders have already talked to leaders of this group, we're maintaining a dialogue. we want them to stay calm. >> reporter: police are not allowing the protesters inside the lot. but they are allowing them to bring in some of their material including this tent that they're rying to get in. it did turn into a bit of chaos once the protesters marched to the scene. they plan to camp out for five nights in a protest they stress is nonviolent.

occupy last made a splash when city police -- they've now seized on the youth jail issue. money that would be better spent on education. >> even though we're not the public now because we lost the encampment down in mchendren square. we're still busy doing tons of stuff. it's an unrelentless pace. you're looking live here at the scene. >> reporter: police are being fairly -- i mean respectful from what we have seen. they allowed some of the protesters to go inside into the middle of this site here. but you can see the huge incident command postthere. as you can see down monument street just a line of police cars, dozens of officers out here. we are waiting to see if there are any arrests, if there are any clashes and we will keep you updated here. occupy baltimore has remained active in a number of

other issues including protests against income inequality and foreclosures. our weather has warmed up nicely after a very chilly weekend. there's plenty of sunshine out there today. but changes are coming, wjz is live with first warning weather meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk are updating our conditions. we're going to start inside with bob. >> it was a very chilly start this morning. one of the coldest days we've seen this winter. 17 at the airport, 21 in washington. 13 in oakland, 17 down in ocean city and 20 in pax river. it has warmed up considerably compared to what we saw this weekend. 39 now, 30 in washington. a little warmer in oakland at 43 degrees. bernadette has a look at what's coming our way late tonight and tomorrow, bernadette. >> reporter: the reason we're getting this warmer push of air is because of the storm moving in our direction. so the clouds are already starting to come in. the rain will break out overnight and as you can see it's already made its way into western parts of the state. that rain will overcome the

state tomorrow. but it will come with colder air. when it starts to get out of here the ups and downs will continue and we'll have that forecast coming up. back inside. >> thank you bernadette. thousands of people take to the streets of downtown baltimore today for the city's annual martin luther king jr. parade. wjz is live, monique griego has more on the celebration. >> reporter: those streets were packed with people as more than 60 local organizations participated in today's parade. through music then dance, the city celebrated the legacy of martin luther king jr. >> it gives me a showing of unity and a feeling of togetherness. >> reporter: the civil rights leader's birthday still draw it is clouds with thousands of people lining the streets downtown. >> dr. king stood for moving

communities forward. he stood for everybody working in concert to achieve a higher goal and something bigger than themselves. >> reporter: and as beats from the marching band signaled the event was in full swing, paradegoers reflected on what brought them there. >> a lot of us are starting to wake up and really see that the dream will come to fruition. >> reporter: some a see today as a time to step up and support his message of equality. because of the outstanding talent that performs in this parades every year, people are making their traditional come out. >> ever since i moved to baltimore we come out. we have coffee at city cafe, come out to enjoy the parade. >> reporter: with music moving their bodies and dr. king in their heart, not even a cold baltimore day would keep this crowd from coming out to honor his accomplishment past and present. >> the sun is out, it's a little brisk. but you can feel the energy from the people, it's a great day. >> reporter: and the grand marshal of today's parade was

candidates to stop attacking each other as they battle for votes in south carolina. manuel gallegus reports from the campaign trail. >> reporter: john huntsman's bid for the white house is over. >> i offer my heartfelt thanks. today our campaign for the presidency ends, but our campaign to build a better and more trustworthy america continues. >> reporter: huntsman now supporting romney. calling him the candidate most possible to beat obama. that's not what he said last week. >> he seems to be detached from the problems americans are facing. >> reporter: now huntsman is urging the remaining candidates to stop attacking each other in negative adds like this one

from newt gingrich targeting romney. >> he will say anything to win. >> reporter: the committees have spent millions of ad just in south carolina. polls show mitt romney with the lead, his rivals are trying to show voters he's not up front. >> every candidate out there they should put their taxes out, including mitt. >> reporter: and that he's buying votes. >> money doesn't buy elections, ideas, character, integrity, vision that wins elections. >> reporter: ron paul the candidate who came closest to beating john huntsman comes close at the meeting in south carolina. >> and south carolina voters will go to the polls this weekend. if you're waiting for someone to come home from work let's check on the traffic. >> 95 southbound you will get

all right, beautiful night outside right now. really nice. >> actually very close to normal this afternoon after a very chilly start and chilly weekend. the coldest temperature so far this winter was 13 about a week and a half ago. this morning we're 17 degrees. take a look at temps right now, it's going to warm up and get milder overnight. 39 now, cumberland just jumped up to 34. 37hagerstown,41 pax river. we had seen a few reports of a little bit of isolated icing

with some drizzle falling out there. so in some of those valley areas, be careful the next few hours before things warm up. we could be some slick spots very, very isolated. really don't expect that around here, but there may be a little touch of sleet just around the maryland, pennsylvania border as some rain moving in later this evening. certainly cold enough to walk with a little sleet. but could be mild temperatures but there might just be a touch of sleet tonight, later on north and west of the city. 17 dewpoint, that's quite dry air. so it's going to take a lot to get that precept down on the ground. 39 in ocean city, 41 pax river. locally 36 in bell air. some of those areas, northern heartford, baltimore county and northern cal county, and ran castic could see a little bit of that sleet later on this evening. we'll watch that for you. 40degrees today, our average is

41. so we really -- that's where we should be. 17 this morning. 71 and one are the words on this date. right now southerly winds will continue to bring this warm air in. oakland a little wind to the south. the winds actually coming in at three and 4,000 feet. of course oakland's 2,000 feet up or so. so the warm air is coming in at the ground level. cumberland no wind at all now. that's why that cold air is holding in there. but we'll continue to warm up and tomorrow we'll be back in the 50s around here. this little batch of rain, during the dame tomorrow we'll see it rain. we warm up and get cold again. this has been the picture all winter long. there'll be a little, you can see at least by the radar indicating to the north, a little frozen precept possible

revolutionary transplant. christopher lyle had cancer in his windpipe. so he traveled across the world for another chance at life. >> it's amazing to be you know that pioneer. >> reporter: 30-year-old christopher lyle zits -- sits in front of me as only the second man in the world with a trachea implanted in him. >> right now i'm cancer free. right now it's the daily routine of getting stronger and getting back together. >> reporter: dr. materini took out his cancerous trachea and installed a new one made out of plastic and coated with his own stem cell. the stem cell technology used in christopher's surgery was actually developed here in the united states in boston at harvard science center. >> this really is a culmination of probably two decades worth

our website wjz.com. valuable medical equipment is stolen from sinai hospital. they loaded a large piece of medical equipment worth $28,000 into a budget rental truck and drove away. detectives are asking anyone who recognizes to men to call police. police say a man became pinned underneath a car carrier as he was unloading vehicles at heritage hyundai. he died on the scene. it's unclear how it happened. the victim had just arrived from new jersey to unload those cars. the new details emerge about the mysterious disappearance of a montana school teacher. the fbi is now asking property owners in the area to check vacant farmland where sherry arnold might be buried. the 43-year-old went for an early morning run on january 27th and never returned. police announced friday they believe arnold is dead. so far the only clue in her disappearance is one of

arnold's shoes found along her running route. two colorado men believed to be involved in his disappearance are now in custody. a dispute over the nfl play offs leads to a double shooting in georgia. one of the victims is in critical condition tonight. a new orleans saints fan opened fire after he took offense to another customer cheering for the chargers. joe paterno finally speaks out about the child abuse that cost him his job. paterno says that he had no idea there was a dark side to

his old friend sandusky. >> reporter: the 85-year-old paterno is currently undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer. sitting in a wheelchair he told reporter sally jenkins after reporting two officials of a 2002 shower incident involving former coach sandusky and a young boy. he did not follow up more aggressively. out of fear of influencing any internal investigation. i didn't know exactly how to handle it and it was afraid to do something that might jeopardize what the university procedure was, he says so i backed away and turned it over to some other people. if there was a problem they would be following up on it. those people were curley and gary shultz. both are now charged with lying to a grand jury. >> i had never had to deal with something like that. >> reporter: in addition, paterno told jenkins even if

former assistant coach mcquery had been more graphic on the shower room rape it may not have registered. to be frank with you i don't know that it would have done any good paterno said, because i never heard of, of rape in a man. paterno says he's reserving any judgment against sandusky and school officials. preferring to let the legal system run its course. >> sandusky remains free on bail while awaiting his trial later this year. floyd vanhouser who was raised by bernie fine and his wife told police in december that fine molested him when he was a teenager. now he says those claims are false. two other men accused fine of abusing them when they were children but the statute of limitations has expired. cyber criminals hack into a popular shopping website compromising the information of

we're following breaking news. police are arresting occupy baltimore protesters. mike hellgren joins us now with details. >> reporter: kai, so where they had erected this tent out in the street. there were a number of protesters gathered there. police opened up the other gate on the back end of this piece of property that they were trying to occupy. and a number of officers, there really were a lot of officers i would classify it as dozens of officers both city police and state police. they came in from the back here in groups and started pulling people out. say like three or four officers grabbing each protester and started pulling them out the back and we believe they were arresting them. we had witnessed earlier a chat that police had had with some

of the leaders of this demonstration where they said, if you do not go, by a certain time, you're going to be arrested. just so you know. be but up until that point, it had been relatively calm. it was clear though that police were not going to allow them to occupy this piece of state owned land where there are plans to build a juvenile facility, and occupy was upset about that. the crowd seems relatively calm still but we're going to keep an eye on things here because it is still all unfolding as you're seeing from sky high chopper 13 from up above. >> you're not seeing any resistance from the protesters or any clashes like we've seen in other cities, mike? >> no they've gone limp. where they were arrested. they are sitting and the police will come in and just kind of you know grab them under their arms. and grab their feet, and then

take them out the back, the back gate of this fenced off state piece of state owned land. and then, they will move them over to where they have the a command post. i'm watching right now, they're talking another one of the protesters out of that back gate. they had planned, they are taking two of them actually. they had planned to occupy this site for five days. but that it appears is not going to happen. and we're continuing to see more arrests here at the scene in east baltimore. >> thank you, mike hellgren reporting live via phone over the occupy protest of a planned juvenile justice facility. we are going to switch to our weather right now. it is a beautiful monday night but some changes we're told are on the way. meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk have what we can expect tomorrow and in a few days. we're going to start outside with bernadette. >> reporter: these changes

is a chemical. >> reporter: 43-year-old fernando perez is being held on suspicion of attempted murder. in tonight's wjz health watch, more than 620,000 americans have weight loss surgery every year. there are two common types of procedures but a new study finds that one may be more effective. randall pinkston reports for wjz. >> reporter: lynette trasmet decided to have weight loss surgery after she was diagnosed with diabetes. >> i was so heavy, when i went to the doctor, no scale could take my weight. >> reporter: after complaining to her doctor she had the band removed. >> i told her what is going on? i am not losing any weight. i'm gaining weight still.

>> reporter: trofman's experience is not unusual. nearly half of patients who chose gastric banding were still obese after six years. patients also had more long term operations and follow up operations than those who had gastric bypass where doctors used staples to create a small stomach pouch. the study shows that people who had gastrosurgery lost weight more quickly and kept it off longer than those who had the band. there's a reason that bypass patients may have better results. >> when we remove parts of the stomach we change the hormones that control hunger. >> it was an experience that i learned from, but it was a very big mistake. >> reporter: she underwent enhanced gastric bypass in the fall and has shed 77 pounds with diet and exercise. she plans to lose even more.

wildfires force florida residents to evacuate their homes homes in deltona. fire officials say that gusty winds caused the blaze to spread quickly. residents were able to return to their homes last night, crews were closely monitoring any hot spots and potential flair ups. police officers caught on tape beating handcuffed suspects are now getting their jobs back. here you can see the officers shoving a woman and several others to the ground outside a diner in denver when the surveillance video was uncovered the men were fired for excessive use of force. but now the civil service commission announces the two officers must be reinstated with back pay. the city can still appeal that decision. still ahead on eyewitness news tonight -- >> i'm mike hellgren in east baltimore where police are ,,,,
