[ speaking in foreign language ] >> the captain and the coast guard argue. today, more bodies are pulled from the wreckage. >> hi, everyone. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> shocking new audio as the death toll rises in italy. there is new insight into the confusion of the cruise ship accident. anna metraininga reports for wjz, on the reported heated phone call between the ship's captain and the coast guard. >> reporter: controlled explosions blew searches for the concordia. >> we hope that this day we can reach all of the places that haven't been inspected yet.

>> reporter: they're looking in the murky water and interior of the ship, for anyone who may still be alive. but search crews say they only found more victims tuesday. francisco is now under house arrest. and faces charges of causing a ship wreck, manslaughter and abandoning ship. in a call to the coast guard right after the wreck, skitino saidy he's in a life boat during evacuation. the coast guard official yells. telling skitino, you get on board. this is an order. the captain says, but you are aware it is dark and we can't see anything. the official replies, get on the bough of the ship and tell me what can be done. infrared shows some of the passenger his to climb down the side of the ship, using rope ladders. now, there's a new problem. the wrecked ship contains 500,000 gallons of fuel. >> reporter: dutch leaders are waiting for the go ahead to

start the delicate process of extracting fuel that could begin as early as wednesday. the water is a protected marine life sanctuary. crews have already placed it around the costa concordia in case of a spill. but officials say the risk of a leak increases. in italy, anna metranga, wjz eyewitness news. >> it is estimated that the process to extract the fuel from the ship could take as long as four weeks. charged with killing his father, a harford county teen goes before a judge. wjz is live in the newsroom with more on the robert richardson iii case. >> richardson waived his right to a hearing. the 16-year-old freshman is charged as an adult, with murdering his 58-year-old father robert richardson, jr. the crime happened january 9th, inside their bel air home. richardson said little during the proceeding and was taken into custody. according to the baltimore sun,

richardson nodded in recognition of a few family members in court. richardsonrichardson wore a black and white jump suit and his hands and feet were shackled. >> he is being held without bail. he's accused of trying to assassinate the president. and today, more charges are filed against oscar ortega- hernandez. he was indicted today on 17 charges, including trying to kill president barack obama. he is accused of trying to fire shots at the white house in november. he's being held without bail at this time. the president was not in the white house at the time. the group, occupy baltimore protestors are not backing down. they are trying to stop the construction of a juvenile jail in east baltimore. >> reporter: occupy baltimore tells wjz they will be back here at the site at 6:00 tonight. but you can see there are still a number of police cars here, and the state police incident command center is still here

for anything that might happen. police charged the six people they arrested, four men and two women, with trespassing. the arrest came as tensions mounted between officers, some armed in riot gear. and more than 70 members of occupy baltimore. the group is protesting at the site of a proposed juvenile jail. >> when we look to the future, we see a city in which we're building wal-marts and underfunding services for youth. >> here's how it unfolded. the area secure. and police put up no- trespassing signs minutes before they arrived. >> this is state property here. it's been fenced. it is their private property. >> reporter: troopers were initially friendly and did not pushing back pieces of a frame of a makeshift house. police told demonstrators they couldn't live on the site for five days as they planned. >> we're going to try and keep

peaceful relationships with the police as much as possible. >> reporter: occupy plans to return here throughout the week, despite the confrontation. >> politically, it's a threat. politically, hopefully we're keeping this agenda in the public radar. >> reporter: city police pushed media from the scene here before the event was over last night. reporting from east baltimore, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> last month, police evicted the group from mceldon square, where some people had been living for 10 weeks. that eviction was peaceful, without a single arrest. the baltimore community gathers to say a final farewell to a local radio legend. adam may is live in the newsroom with more on a public memorial held today for ron smith. >> reporter: the auditorium at goucher college was held today for ron's public memorial. ♪ [ music ] two u.s. marines stood at

attention, while ron's favorite songs played. ron was a former marine himself. his coworkers, his family and his friends all took the stage to share their favorite memories of ron. the service lasted about 40 minutes. it was often filled with a lot of laughter and applause. ron smith died december 19th of pancreatic cancer. today's service collected donations for the pancreatic association. all of the proceeds did k go to the canc -- can go to the cancer center at johns hopkins university. baltimore's mayor is a crime victim. police say someone entered mayor rawlings-blake's twond in -- 2001 infinity parked near her home around 1:00 in the morning. a suspect opened the door of the mayor's unlocked car, but no property was taken. the mayor's security detail watching her house saw a man.

in 2002, a suspect stole stereo equipment. and that suspect was arrested by police as well. let's take a live look right now. sunny conditions on a mild afternoon. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. how high did it get, bob? >> people said, is it january? or is it april? because believe it or not, this last hour, we jumped up to 58 degrees. the sun has been out since about 12:45, just after noon. take a look at radar. a couple of showers up across the hagerstown area. a few more out to the west of the oakland area. there is a front that is going to go through the region. that will gib to drop -- begin to drop temperatures, particularly by tomorrow. right now, it's 58 degrees. 50 in washington. 61 in pax river. to the west, oakland at 50, the cool spot, cumberland in the valley, they never really warmed up. they were at 44. during the day tomorrow, cold front comes through. here comes colder air. to our north and northwest

that driver. the car hung off the bridge with a mother and her two daughters inside. they were miraculously pulled to safety. look at this. actress lindsay lohan leaves court with a smile today. that's because the judge says the troubled star is fulfilling her probation requirements. the judge imposed tough rules after the actress violated the terms of her probation, stemming from dui charges. lohan has been working at the l.a. county morgue. six maryland schools received the highest state honor today, becoming blue ribbon schools n. this -- in this wjz school watch report, andrea fujii tells us more of what makes them worthy of the achievement. >> reporter: meet the newest recipients of the blue ribbon award. students and teachers at baltimore's county -- baltimore county's woodholm elementary. >> we're usually focused and on

the markets have been up all day. the dow is up 60. s&p up 5. nasdaq up 14. -- 17. let's go to new york now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. stocks rallied on reports that china's economy didn't slow as much as expected late last year. that helped offset a disappointing earnings from citigroup. kraft cut 1600 jobs from the u.s. and canada this year, as it prepares to split its businesses among two. kraft announced in august it would split into two independent companies, the global snacks business, and north american grocery business. shares of carnival corps fell as much as 15%, following the deadly wreck friday of its cruise ship on the italian coast. the costa concordia is operated by carnival subsidiary in italy. get ready for sticker

but a full rally is set for 6:00 tonight. >> protestors also say they want to show the house of representatives what real democracy looks like. the house reconvened today. a lawyer for bradley manning, the soldier accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of government documents online. s to question secretary of state hillary clinton. that lawyer was not allowed to call clinton to the witness stand at fort meade. earlier this month, a judge ruled that manning will face a court-martial. he could face life in prison if convicted on 22 counts. there is new insight into why a german con artist claimed he was a member of the rockefeller family more than a decade ago. >> reporter: the man told the fbi his name was clark rockefeller when he was arrested in 2008. but in it, clark gert rider said he said he was a pathetic

800 development strairtds during the uprising last year. if convicted, mubarak could be sentenced to death. mubarak's two sons are facing two separate charges of corruption in the trial. iran is threatening an embargo in europe. and that means prices could go up here. how much higher? experts predict gas could reach $5 a gallon. that is, if iran closes its main shipping port, which provides nearly 20% of the oil traded nearly worldwide. wjz tracks how much you're paying now. a gallon. on average, $3.39. last month, it was $3.21. a year ago, it was just over $3 a gallon. a 5-year-old is in custody, after allegedly stabbing three people at a mobile home park in virginia. adam may is there with the temper tantrum. >> they say that child stabbed

a child and an adult. all were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. it's unclear if that object used was a knife. neighbors say the child was upset after a dispute with a juicebox. police are not confirming those reports. one of the victims is related to the child, but they are not saying what the relationship is. >> experts are evaluating the 5- year-old boy. you can see a mob dragging a young boy to the ground and proceeding to punch, kick and hit him with ice chunks. the beating went on for three minutes. officers say the boy was robbed of his money, his wallet, his gym shoes. and detectives are searching for suspects. a 16-year-old becomes a hero wheny he saves seven young children. investigators trace the blaze to a space heater on the second floor. the mother says the family had been using space heaters as

their main source of heat. two pets were also rescued. everyone escaped unharmed. a gas leak causes a devastating townhouse. the family of four was evacuated safely prior to the blast. >> christian mendez was at his computer in his room, when the house on his brook exploded. >> i don't know what to compare it to. i ran outside. and the house was in flames and everything was just thrown everywhere. it was crazy. >> reporter: officials began getting calls from residents about 13 after 12:00 noon, reporting a strong odor of gas, by immediately going door to door, well before the explosion and getting people out, lives were saved. as you can see from chopper 2, parts of the house that blew open this town house development, landed across the street. officials found out a contractor had cut into a gasline. >> it was a contractor in the area. it was big enough for the yard. hit a gas main. the gas backed up into one house. >> reporter: officials report

no fatalities, but there were injuries to two utility workers and two firefighters. jerry knap, who was also the emergency services coordinator for the town, and kenny patterson. >> were they knocking on the door and then the explosion occurred? >> as far as i've been cold, -- told, yes. but as far as i was told, they were knocking on the door. they just finished checking that house, when the explosion took place. >> reporter: alisa rodriguez was adjusting her blinds when the house across the street blew. >> it was like something out of a movie, something out of hollywood. the explosion and the debris and flames. it was just unreal. unreal. the whole neighborhood shook. >> reporter: nicole gesher was one of dozens grateful they got their children out. but she still can't find the dog she was caring for. >> our neighbor told us our door and her door is busted out. and we don't know where the dog is. and we're just very scared about it. and it's not our dog. we're babysitting the dog. it's the worst thing you want

to tell somebody, you don't know where their dog is. one firefighter remains in the intensive care unit with injuries. in tonight's wjz healthwatch, a new study finds that babies learn to talk by reading lips. florida researchers discovered babies begin shifting eye gaze to lips around 6 months, around the same time they start to make syllables. once they mastered the eye movement, they began to shift eyes again. this shows that quality face time is important for speech development. stay-at-home mothers don't often get credit for their time at home. >> reporter: a successful executive, jen mandolinascas, gave up the corporate life for a life at home with her two children. >> yea. good job! >> my husband and i have worked very hard to build a situation

that is secure, that's financially stable. >> reporter: but all of that planning won't do her any good the next time she applies for a credit card in her own name. she'll be denied. >> it's really frustrating and upsetting. >> reporter: this is all the result of the 2009 financial meltdown, when congress passed the credit card accountability, responsibility, and disclosure act. >> the intent was really good. >> reporter: and the law cracked down on all kinds of nasty bank fees. but one regulation that just went into effect requires lenders to consider a person's ability to repay when they borrow. and according to financial adviser dana levitt, that means, no income? no credit card. >> it was really intended for young people who are just getting out of college and establishing huge amounts of credit lines and getting in over their heads, but unfortunately, had a much bigger net than was ever intended. >> that net includes stay-at- home parents like jen, who just months ago, could claim

household income and get a credit card. >> if she doesn't have income now, she's out of luck. >> it really makes me feel frustrated with how hard i've worked and the choice i've made to be home with my children. >> reporter: women's groups say the regulation could be crippling to those who are widowed or divorced. some members of congress agree and are expected to take action. we have breaking news to tell you about right now. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene of a fire. captain mike perry with more. what's going on? >> we're at baltimore in highland. this is east baltimore. about five blocks east of patterson park. looks like several row homes possibly involved in this fire. we saw the smoke as we were entering the downtown for our evening news show. and the fire department is just now arriving on the scene. there's no word on a cause of this fire. but you can look to see, looks clearly like there's at least two, maybe even three separate homes involved in this fire. now we're beginning to see very heavy flames in the front bedroom area. it appears it's going to be coming up the front window

we have an update on the breaking news right now. sky eye chopper 13. over the scene of a fire. >> hello, denise. we are in the 3300 block of east baltimore street. this is at north highland. firefighters made entry to this middle group row home. and quickly knocked down the very thick, dense smoke and flames we saw coming out of one of these middle groups. however, it appears that we still have fire, perhaps in the

roof of the townhome, about two over. it's difficult to tell, but we're still seeing some of this thick black smoke. it appears this fire may have gained access to the attic or roof area, and then walked across several of these row homes. no word on injuries right now, as you see. the one that -- with real black in the front. that was where the heavy smoke and flames was coming from initially. and now in the rear, on perhaps either the first or the second, and the group or the one next to it, we're seeing some thick black smoke coming out of the back of that residence. firefighters are still working on the scene. no word on a cause or any injuries at this point. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you very much, captain mike perry, in sky eye chopper 13. . >> those are some brave, brave men. let's check in with bob right now. hopefully a warm day. bob? >> have a warm afternoon. let's take a look at temperatures. 58 degrees.

southwest winds, 17. the barometer holding steady. 29.73. to the west, it's cooling down. 44, cumberland. 45 in elkton. 47 in hagerstown. eventually, it will be cooling down late tonight and a lot cooler late tomorrow. 57 in ocean city. locally, still in the 50s everywhere. still 60 in annapolis and kent island. these are normal temperatures for the first week in april, by the way. 59, 39 today. the average is 41, 24. and the record, 68. in 1913. 1982. 7 below zero. that ties our all-time record low at the airport. we've had that several times. southwest winds kept the warm air in. to the west, they're beginning to turn more to the west. and it's going to be pretty strong. in fact, there's a wind advisory for garrett county. winds weekend of could get up to 30, 35 miles an hour late tomorrow. low pressure has moved through the region. out to the west, cold front now, causing some showers in
