down. they say they will be here at 6:00 tonight and plenty of state troopers are waiting. >> reporter: troopers made their presence known, sitting in cars inside the massive vacant lot, where they arrested six occupy baltimore protestors, just hours before. new video shows police telling media to get out before dismantling the group's tent, and tearing down the makeshift schoolhouse they built on state- owned land, while protesting a jail. dozens lined the area in riot gear. occupiers say they're not intimidated. >> it's all right. this is our city. and we're going to keep it the way we want it. nothing they can do will stop us from getting that out there. >> reporter: police say the property is private. and they only arrested the protestors after repeated warnings. the confrontation here was by far the testiest one the group has had with police.

mike mcgwire was charged with trespassing. >> we're still trying to find our ground. because we had established ourselves in mceldon. >> reporter: many had been living in mceldon square for 10 weeks. >> we want everything to be calm. we want to protect their rights to express their views. and that's what we want to do. >> reporter: it remains to be seen whether tensions will boil over again. police tell wjz they'll be there as long as they need to be. and that leaves open the possibility for more arrests. >> reporter: there were no injuries during the events last night. those arrested and charged are now out of jail. live in least baltimore, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> occupy protestors also clashed with police in washington, d.c., where at least one person is arrested and charged with assaulting an officer. it is part of a demonstration against corporate greed at the u.s. capital. the occupy movement remains strong in washington, d.c. because the national park service is allowing protestors

to remain in their encampment. >> reporter: updating the breaking news in east baltimore. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene of a house fire. >> we're in the 3400 block of east baltimore street at north highland, where just a few moments ago, firefighters had a raging fire. we're going to show you some video. this is when we first arrived on the scene. this is a middle group, two- story row home. heavy fire in the second floor. no reports of injuries initially. firefighters have gotten on the scene. they have had smoke conditions which affected two or three homes, either side of this fire. again, like we said, no initial reports of injuries and no reports of a cause. it has completely closed the 3400 block of baltimore street. and north highland, two blocks north and south as firefighters continue to work in the area. back to you on tv hill. thank you. captain mike perry, reporting live. animal cruelty in howard county. police discovered 40 dead pets.

wjz is live in ellicott city. wjz has more in this bizarre case. >> those animals were left with no food, no water and no heat to. add to this mystery, some of those were found stuffed inside of a freezer. >> body of 40 dead animals inside columbia. >> it was just so sickening. my wife was -- she was going to throw up. she was disgusted. >> birds, cats, rabbits, snakes, guinea pigs. 21 others dead in the home or in cages. >> rumors were, they come at weird hours. >> reporter: neighbors say the renters living there hadn't been seen in weeks. the discovery came when the property owners came to check on the house after getting complaints of a nasty snell. >> i saw them when they first went in. >> he walked in and walked right out.

way in a lawsuit of a maryland man who died after being shocked with a stun gun. >> reporter: the court heard opening arguments. the parents of durrell gray are seeking millions from the sheriff's deputy who shot gray. gray died following the incident in 2007. detectives say gray disa -- disobeyed his orders to get on the ground. the family claims it was abuse of force. >> reporter: investigation shows gray was not wearing his hearing aids at the time and may not have heard the deputy's commands. a harford county teenager. 16-year-old robert richardson waived his right to a preliminary hearing. police say he admits to shooting his dad to death last week in the family's bel air home. he's charged as an adult with first-degree murder. high honors for a baltimore

radio icon. hundreds turned out for an emotional memorial, to ron smith, who recently lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. weijia jiang has reaction from smith's wife. >> reporter: smith's wife says this is exactly what her husband wanted. not a funeral service. but a memorial, where people could celebrate and laugh together. of course, there were plenty of tears, too. >> at belcher university, the main auditorium was packed with people who love ron smith. >> we call this a gathering of family, friends and loyal listeners. and i think everyone who was there today really saw their ron smith. >> reporter: the baltimore broadcasting legend died last month, after battling pancreatic cancer. known on wvl, the voice of reason, smith shared with his listeners. >> i owed it to my audience to be honest with them. >> and he was honest with

himself. >> reporter: smith planned every detail of the memorial service with his wife june. he even chose the music and the speakers, long-time friends and colleagues. >> i discovered that ron was really just a big, really smart, oreo cookie. he was hard and crunchy on the outside, and warm and soft on the inside. and that inside was absolutely filled with love. >> reporter: a love his devoted fans surely felt. many attended, despite never meeting smith in person. >> since the early '90s, he was my companion in my cars. i drove around. and he became somebody i had to listen to. >> reporter: after two marines presented a flag to mrs. smith, ron's voice filled the room. >> the curtain is coming down right now. and so i'm bidding everyone a very fond farewell. >> reporter: one that ended with the smith's favorite song, "beautiful day." moo ♪ [ music ] >> especially now, after what he and i have been through.

jessica kartalija shows us how the ravens' excitement is boosting business. first, mark viviano has more on how the team is getting ready. >> the ravens head to new england as a play-off tested team. four straight years in the post season has led to the rapid growth of young ravens. and they have received the benefit of extra guidance from their veteran teammates. >> reporter: and that's exactly what the ravens did. talk about a defensive gaffe. >> reporter: sometimes the play- off lesson can be painful. a year ago, young defensive back, lardarius webb was burned on a play in pittsburgh. a critical path that helped derail the ravens' super bowl run. it is a wake-up call for webb who is arguably the most improved raven. his two interceptions were key. veteran ed reed has been webb's mentor and harshest critic.

open in loch raven reservoir. >> reporter: it's not peace and quiet, they are looking for. it's the excitement of trails that are tough enough to walk, let alone wheel over. but baltimore management is worried about erosion, as soil torn loose builds up a sediment in the reservoir. >> they're relocating those trails outside of the buffer zone and making them sustainable, so we don't get any erosion. now, they are backing the idea with a resolution. >> try to develop a compromise so they can expand the mountain bike trails in the reservoir. and also maintain the quality of the reservoir. >> currently, it has an area which mountain bikers find too tame. the city's concern in the past was maintaining a healthy water shed. >> when you have ground compacted, vegetation can't grow. when you start honey combing an entire area, then you have woods. you have a series of mud paths.

severely warm, spring-like day. today's temperatures in the upper 50s. down to our south, it was in the 60s. that's normal for the first week in april. not the second week in january. let's take a look at temps now. it is still warm. still the warm air. 49 out there in oakland. just dropped 58 in washington. we're still at 57, 59 in patuxent river. naval air station. 52 in elkton. and 41 in -- cumberland. wind came in and heat it up. and went back to 41. dew point at 44. air not all that humid. the rain this morning, amounted to generally about a third of an inch most areas. so a lot less than even the computer models have looked at.

52 in rock hall. 55 on the kent island area. 50 down in annapolis and d.c. 59 and 39 today. 59. the record high, 68 in 1913. 41, 24. that's normal. okay? 7 below zero. that's the record, 1982. the record low, 7 below zero. right now, there's that southwest wind that's been pretty gusty as well. and it will get even stronger tonight. and later during the day tomorrow. but it will be out of the northwest. that means colder air will be starting to move into the region. there's a little batch of snow over wisconsin today. a big storm is going to be affecting the seattle area the next couple of days. you'll hear about that. settle may be totally shut down with 12 to 18 inches of snow in that seattle region. very, very unusual. the normal snowfall for the whole winter is only 5 inches. so they're really going to get creamed. for our region, a weak front. i don't think we'll even see a

it is 5:29. 57 degrees. partly cloudy. good evening, everybody. and thank you for staying with wjz. eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. rescuers discover five more bodies as they searched the wrecked cruise ship on italy's coast. and newly released phone calls revealed the shocking behavior by the ship's captain after the crash. anna metranga reports from italy, where dozens are still missing. controlled explosions blew open holes for rescue crews, searching the costa concordia. >> we hope that in this way, we can reach all of the places that haven't been inspected yet. >> reporter: they're looking in the murky water and interior of the ship, for anyone who may still be alive. but search crews only found more victims tuesday. >> reporter: skitino is now under house arrest and faces charges of causing a shipwreck,

manslaughter, and abandoning ship. in a call with the coast guard right after the wreck, skittino said he is in a life boat during evacuation. the coast guard official yells! [ yelling ] >> reporter: telling, skittino, you get on board. this is an order. the captain says, but are you are aware it is dark and we can't see anything. the official replies, get on the bough of the ship and tell me what can be done. >> reporter: infrared video shows some of the apparently his to climb down the side of the ship, using rope ladders. now, there's a new problem. the wrecked ship contains 500,000 gallons of fuel. dutch engineers are here, waiting for the go ahead to start the delicate process of extracting the fuel. that could begin as early as wednesday. the water around the island is a protected marine life sanctuary. crews have already placed booms around the costa concordia, in

case of a spill. but the risk of a leak is increasing. wjz eyewitness news. >> under terms of the house arrest, the judge ordered the captain to be confined to house arrest at his home near naples. a baby is found abandoned in washington, d.c. a neighbor discovered the infant called 911. someone left her outside, wrapped in a blanket, in 25- degree temperatures. investigators say they are treating the case as a homicide. a man accused of firing a shotgun at the white house is indicted on federal charges. a grand jury handed up a 17- count indictment against oscar ramiro ortega-hernandez. president obama was not at home at the time. and no one was hurt in that november shooting. the incident caused more than $1,000 in damage to the white house. the brutal beating of a teenager is caught on tape in

illinois. now, police are looking for suspects. denise is in the newsroom with more on the case. >> reporter: seven people jumped the teen in chicago. the beating was later posted on you tube. you can see the suspects dragging the teen. they hit him for more than three minutes. the suspect stole his gym shoes and his wallet. the teen was treated at a hospital for cuts and bruises. but he is expected to recover. >> all right, denise. the video received several hundred comments before it was removed from you tube. philadelphia police are offering a $10,000 reward as they search for information in a fatal beating. 23-year-old kevin klesk was killed outside of a bar. investigators say he was yelling for a cab when three men punched and kicked him. he was pronounced dead hours later. it appears the suspects believed he was yelling at them. a british police officer

loses papers detailing security plans for the london olympics. an officer left the documents on a train and reported it to his bosses, january 5th. police are downplaying the security breach, saying the papers do not compromise the security operations for the summer games. but olympic security experts are calling the games embarrassing. time is running out for republican presidential hopefuls. they're trying to win support. danielle nottingham reports for wjz, the candidates are taking aim at front runner mitt romney. >> reporter: mitt romney is taking aim at supporters in south carolina, where he is still the man to beat. >> the reason i'm finding support in this state and others is that people believe having spent a life in the private sector, that i have credibility talking about the economy. >> reporter: but fellow republicans say romney is anything but credible. >> he needs needs to step up, and do the right thing and quit playing dirty politics.

nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> the candidates square off one more time before primary day. the gop hopefuls have one more debate, scheduled for thursday night. back on track. a judge says lindsay lohan is fulfilling her probation requirements. the troubled star was in court for less than five minutes today. the judge imposed tough new rules on the 25-year-old back in november, after the actress violated the terms of her probation, stemming from dui charges. lohan has been working at the l.a. county morgue. millions of families struggle with the devastation of alzheimer's disease. it, the government is moving forward with a plan to treat and prevent it. terrell brown reports from washington. >> reporter: russell patterson knows all about the devastation of alzheimer's. his mother edith has struggled with it for seven years. he's encouraged to hear the government take it head on. >> it's like cancer. it's like something we need to

find out more about, if anything. so i think that's a great move on obama's part. >> they are yeping the first national plan for tackling -- developing the first national plan for tackling alzheimer's. the alzheimer's association says the goal is realistic if the commitment is really there and the funding. >> we'll see in the coming months whether in is a plan that will remain an aspiration or whether it's a battle plan, backed by the resources to really end this disease. >> reporter: president obama signed off on the alzheimer's project last year. and his committee is now under deadline to finalize the strategy. >> reporter: the group is lammering -- hammering out its game plan. it's the only disease among the top killers for which there is no prevention or cure. >> this, someone taking the initiative is a good thing for me. >> reporter: without better treatment, doctors expect the number of alzheimer's patients to grow dramatically. possibly affecting 16 million

beautiful evening all around maryland. we started the day with some rain. but the skies have certainly cleared up. it's a beautiful sunset. bob has a look at what we can expect tomorrow and over the next few days. bob? >> ron brought back some of those leftovers, by the way. ask they're done. let's take a look at tomorrow's forecast. yes, it's going to be a lot, lot cooler than it was today. 59 tomorrow. around 39 or 40. that's about it. and it gets a little colder as we look at the five-day forecast. 43 on thursday. thursday evening, could be a few flurries around. friday, 32, 26. now, late friday night into saturday morning, another system may bring us a little snow-rain mixture. a little sleet, before it goes over to just rain on saturday as it warms up. so as that warm front comes through, could be a little snow, late friday night, early saturday morning. and partly sunny. 44 on sunday. a major winter storm slams washington state. and more on is -- more is on the way.

meteorologists there are predicting the seattle area could be hit with 12 to 18 inches in the next few days. that's three times the annual snowfall totals. the national weather service says this could be the worst snowstorm in the state, since november of 1985. interesting story here. a missing snow shoer is found alive in a washington state park. young chung kim, went missing saturday, as heavy snow and freezing temperatures took hold of that region. but he stayed warm by running in place. and even burning the money in his wallet, before crews finally found him two days later. kim was an experienced snow shoer. but his family still feared the worst. >> in the morning time, we were bracing for maybe some bad news. but then miracle. and i mean, there was just -- when i called my mom back home, there were just cheers everywhere in the room. so just happiness, pure happiness. >> kim was conscious, appeared in stable condition and was

able to each walk. a 5-year-old from virginia is arrested after allegedly stabbing three people. sheriffs say the child attacked two other children and an adult with a sharp-edge object. it happened at a mobile home park, in rutgers yesterday afternoon. neighbors say stemed from an altercation over a juice box. the victims were not seriously injured. the 5-year-old, though, is in police custody. a woman was accidentally shot by her husband. police say the woman had gone out to run some errands but returned home because she forgot something. her husband heard her return, thought she was an intruder, shot her in the chest. neighbors say there was a recent break-in and murder in their community. police say the husband will not be charged. check in with eyewitness news at 6:00. for these stories and more, coming up, vic is standing by with a preview. mystery man. a man pretending to be a member of the rockefeller family.

a car crashes into a tulsa home, just missing a sleeping toddler. police say a speeding car didn't make the curve, rolled on its side, and crashed into a bedroom, ramming a bed, where a 3-year-old was sleeping. the impact demolished the wall of the apartment, leaving a little girl buried in debris. luckily, she only suffered a few scratches. a california man is murdered while trying to save his grandfather from two robbers. demillo was trying to chase away suspects who were trying

to attack his grandfather in his driveway. he smashed the back window of their suv before he was shot in the head. two people are in custody tonight. a man who was missing for five days is found dead inside a movie theater bathroom in colorado. the man's car was found at the movie theater three days after he went missing. but his body wasn't discovered until two days after that. now, the family wants to know why it took so long to give him answers. >> i'm surprised. five days is a long time, especially when the police department is there. >> the coroner says the man died of a heart attack. his body was found in a locked stall in the theater bathroom. >> looks like a scene out of an action movie. a house explodes in a southern new york neighborhood. and neighbors are still surprised. >> reporter: christian mendez was at his computer in his room, when the house on his

block exploded. >> i ran outside. and the house was in flames and everything was just thrown everywhere. it was crazy. >> reporter: officials began getting calls from residents about 13 after 12 noon, reporting a strong odor of gas, by immediately going door to door, well before the explosion, and getting people out. lives were saved. as you can see from chopper 2, parts of the house that blew open this townhouse development, landed across the street. officials found out the contractor had cut into a gasline. >> it was a contractor in the area, big enough for the yard. hit a gas main. the gas backed intowp one house. backed up into one house. >> reporter: officials report no fatalities. but there were injuries two two. jerry knap, who was also emergency services coordinator for the town and kenny patterson. >> that -- were they knocking on the door. >> as far as i was told, yes.
