hello again. i'm jessica cartella. >> and i'm john scott. >> rescue crews have stopped the search. right now 11 are dead and 22 are still missing. we have the latest from giglio, italy. >> reporter: hope of finding survivors aboard the costa concordia is fading. crews suspended the search after the vessel shifted in rough seas on wednesday. rescue teams say it is very difficult to maneuver through the murky water inside the wrecked cruise ship. >> you can see your hands in front of your mask and nothing more. >> reporter: they've been searching the cabins of the missing passenger and crew members. >> there is a possibility to find a survivor now is very, very low. >> reporter: family members are

starting to arrive on giglio island looking for loved ones. kevin rob ello is from india and his brother worked as a waiter. >> i hope they are safe somewhere on the island and around. >> the ship captain was released from jail and is under house arrest at his home near naples. italian media report that during a three hour hearing the captain told investigators he didn't see the ship but that he tripped and fell into a life boat when the cruise liner started to tip over. schettino faces charges of causing the ship wreck, manslaughter and abandoning ship. >> he has done what he has done and he will pay for his wrongdoings and even pay for his wrong decisions. >> reporter: dutch salvage crews are moving equipment into replace to re -- into place to remove fuel from the ship. extracting the fuel could take as long as four weeks. in giglio, italy, jana met

ranga, wjz into more than 4200 passengers and crew were on board when it slammed into the reef on friday. and back here in the u.s. there were tense moments at the white house where an "occupy" protest gathered. at one point someone threw a moment bomb -- a smoke bomb over the fence. the president and first lady were out for dinner celebrating the first lady's 48th birthday. no arrests have been made. it is a big day in annapolis as the governor unveils his budget for the next fiscal year. pat warren are live at the state house. good afternoon, pat. >> reporter: good afternoon, don. good afternoon, everybody. the o'malley administration is trying to hold the line on budget growth for the next fiscal year but some maryland families are going to take an unexpected hit in the area of income taxes. >> a family of four can earn $150,000 and this will pay $191 more or see $191 less coming

the state. while that may sound high, it is a two-year low. 13% put education at the top of the list. and the state is split down the middle on same-sex marriage. 38% support it and 40% do not. a discrimination law has some groups up in arms. why the groups are concerned about a bill's impact. good afternoon, ron. >> legislation is designed to better protect transgender people. if passed the bill would prohibit discrimination against trans-gender people and at housing and work and public places. the issue came into focus last year when chrisy pollis was beaten inside a mcdonald's after using a restroom. but victim's rights group say it could lead to sexual assaults against woman. critics are worried that sexual predators may decide themselves

continuing are the winds. they are gusting. they are up big time. averaging between 15-25 miles per hour with gusts higher than that. they've dropped our temperatures from 50 at midnight to around 40 degrees right -- right now. and the wind feels like 30 in baltimore and feels like 13 in oakland. but the ups and downs continue so we'll have that forecast coming up. jack young pays a stiff price for crossing the mayor. the baltimore sun reports stephanie rolling lake took back young's tickets to last weekend's ravens game, tickets she had given him for inside of her suite. young had criticized the city plans to run another grand prism. and the ravens prepare for the aches title game. and someone has painted the town purple and gold. the ravens have painted five golden raven logos in secret locations around the baltimore area. the first person to take a picture with all five logos and

police say 7 teens are facing charges for the beating and robbery of an asian high school student. all but one is charged as a juvenile. in the video, some of the assailants can be heard yelling racial slurs at the teenager. but police don't think at tack was racially motivated. a georgia man learns his fate for the murder of a 7-year- old girl. 20-year-old ryan brun was sentenced to life in prison after admitting to sexually molesting, basketballing and stabbing the little girl to death a little more than a month ago. her body was found days later in a dumpster. he told police he killed her to stop her from telling her parents about the assault. in wisconsin, a petition to force the governor out of office. petitions submitted more than a million signatures, twice the number necessary during scott walker's first year in office. he striped public workers of their collective bargaining rights. if you have something to look up today, wikipedia won't be help. it has gone dark. this is what you'll see when

air. the front came through last night and the winds kick up. bringing in snow showers today. but this is confined to the mountains. these are the winds we were talking about. the sustained winds 15-25 miles per hour and gusting over 30. and they've really brought in cooler air. we started out at midnight in the 50s. during the morning show we were in the mid-40s. we've dropped and we're going to stay at this level pretty much for most of the afternoon. when you factor in the wind it feels like 30 degrees in baltimore rights now and it feels like in the teens out in the mountains. there is really cold air to the northwest and that is starting to come our direction. this is just one wave. the next wave is coming our way on friday behind a second storm. first off we're still wrapping up lake-effect snow in western parts of the state. that will die down overnight and the next storm moves our way and the clod -- clouds come in tomorrow and then a chance for snow showers tomorrow night and friday before it gets out of here. a break on friday afternoon but it will be cold with highs in the 30s. and then the next storm moves

into the cold air. it could start as a wintry mix. maybe an icy mix before changing to rain during the day on saturday. so something will monitor and we'll keep you updated. but as far as the forecast goes, today we were in the mid- 40s. we've been following -- falling since then. and tonight down to 21 degrees with the wind dying down. and we have another update for you here too. early look at the forecast for up in new england. they are going to be dealing with the same storm on saturday into sunday. so if you are traveling up there, keep that in mind. but by the game it looks like that will get out of here. we'll have to watch that for you. temperature probably in the mid 30s. not extreme for -- extreme for new england temperatures in january. >> i like this. >> tim found this in our system and put this together. >> i saw a reel -- a real football come up. wow. and still to come on eyewitness news at noon, you are what you eat, but does it matter where you eat.

in today's wjz health watch, a study looks at the rate of blood clots after knee and hip replacement. one in every 100 patients will suffer a blood clot before leaving the hospital. the findings in the journal of the american medical association say patients and their doctors need to take clots into account when weighing the risks and benefits of these surgeries. obesity rates are still very high in the u.s. but they haven't increased much in recent years. the centers for disease control finds no change in the rate of obesity from 2007 to 2010. it is estimated one in three adults and one in six children and teens are obese, which is defined as being 20% or more above your ideal weight. and new research suggests junk food at schools is not causing students to again weight. a pennsylvania state university study found there was a significant increase in the number of students exposed to junk food in middle school,

there is the wind. if you step outside, you will feel it. this is what we have going on for the forecast for the next couple of days. wintery and colder. and the clouds come in during the day and chance for snow showers thursday night into friday. and then it is colder and 35 on high on friday before another storm comes our way. to be a -- could be a wintery mix or snow or icy mix before changing to rain. it is something we'll be monitoring. that is ott of here on -- out of here on sunday. and we think we'll get out of foxboro for the game on sunday but we'll monitor that. and if you are traveling on saturday, it could be a dicey day if you are heading north. now on monday, all that is gone
