. candidate changeup. just ahead of the republican primary in south carolina, new developments and who is still in the race for the white house. hello again. here's what people are talking about today. breaking news in campaign 2012. texas governor rick perry ends his run for the white house, as newt gingrich gains in the polls. danielle nottingham has the very latest for wjz from south carolina. >> reporter: rick perry is out of the race for the republican white house. >> i have come to the conclusion that there is no viable path forward for me in this 2012 campaign.

>> reporter: the texas governor finished fifth in the iowa caucus, last in new hampshire and was at the bottom of the pack in a recent south carolina poll. he dropped out two days before the state primary and threw his support behind newt gingrich. >> we need bold conservative leadership that will take on the entrenched interests and give the american people their country back. >> reporter: a new poll from politico shows newt gingrich is gaining ground in south carolina. the former speaker is now just 7 points behind frontrunner mitt romney. romney's campaign is now pushing back against gingrich's rise. the frontrunner is challenging the former speaker's claim that he helped create millions of jobs. >> congressmen taking responsibility are taking credit for helping create jobs is like al gore taking credit for the internet. [ laughter ] >> reporter: and romney's victory in the iowa caucus is now a thing of the past. the final certified results show

rick santorum received 34 more votes than the gop frontrunner, but iowa republican leaders aren't ready to call santorum the official winner. problems in eight iowa precincts led them to declare this year's caucus a tie. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. newt gingrich said yesterday on the trail he could beat romney if rick santorum and rick perry dropped out of the race. new details about the capsized cruise ship off the coast of italy. the ship's captain could face charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship. 21 people are still missing from the costa concordia. so far, 11 are confirmed dead. three more identified just today. police are looking for answers this noon after several drivers come back to their cars to find their gas had been

stolen right out of the tank. we have more on the investigation from the newsroom. good afternoon, ron. >> reporter: good afternoon. gas thieves are striking parked cars in annapolis by going straight for the gas tank. police there say they are drilling holes directly into the gas tanks of small trucks. while many tanks are plastic, the drills are metal, creating a potentially explosive situation. several cars have been hit, including 11 brand-new trucks at a dealership. officials say many people might not even notice the missing gas, but in this case, the crimes were discovered because someone saw gas on the ground underneath the cars. jessica, back to you. >> ron, thanks. investigators say they are checking surveillance cameras to see if any of the crimes were caught on tape. we'll have more on this story on eyewitness news at 5:00 and 6:00. howard county police say they tracked down a woman connected to a home filled with dead animals. they say the woman, whose name has not been released, had more than 40 pet carcasses inside her

columbia town house, half in a freezer. four animals were found alive inside. they confirmed the woman once worked with an animal rescue group. so far, she has not been charged yet. state senator ronald young will next week propose a state animal abuse registry where convicted abusers photos and addresses will be listed online for 10 years for pet breeders to see. a man charged in the hit and run of a state trooper. police say 30-year-old matthew wood hit the state trooper when the trooper was conducting a traffic stop on i-83 northbound. it happened early sunday morning. the trooper did survive and is recovering. wood has a history of alleged offenses, including speeding and drunk driving. a long-time part of the inner harbor may soon be gone. the city plans so have the carousel near the science center removed because its owner hasn't paid rent. he tells wjz he plans to fight

cooler than at this time yesterday. big change, though, was this morning, when it was in some cases 22 degrees cooler. we're at 34 now, going to a high of 41. that would be normal. normal is still low to mid-40s and mid-20s. we are going to see clouds start to meander into the area, as an area of low pressure will slide by to the north. you saw it's moisture filled, mostly frozen precip. that could give us flurries in the area, between dinner and bedtime. no significance, no watches, warnings or advisories right there. but as we move toward the week's end and into the weekend, there's a rather robust system moving our way. going to have a bit of a different outcome for the mid-atlantic and for foxborough, massachusetts. we'll have the first warning details, coming up shortly. now back to you. >> marty, thank you. a toasting tradition to edgar allen appears to be a thing of the past.

. a riot lasts several hours inside a south carolina prison. it's now under control. last night, several inmates overpowered a guard, taking keys and his radio. about 200 inmates were in the area and were gassed for about an hour before police went in. power was also cut off several times. the guard was released without being hurt. the reason for the riot is still under investigation. we may now know where casey

anthony has been hiding out. according to media reports, she may be staying in palm city, florida at a church there, about an hour north of west palm beach. video claims to show a blonde-haired woman at the church. anthony was recently seen in a video diary with a very similar hair cut. security for super bowl xlvi is already ramping up in indianapolis. the city is putting together an elaborate network to keep visitors and fans safe. security has installed 75 cameras in downtown minneapolis. they will keep an eye on the thousands of fans that will pack the circle city throughout the 10 days of celebration there. still ahead on wjz eyewitness news at noon, a beautiful, but chilly thursday afternoon out there. could we see some snow flurries in our future? find out in the full first warning weather forecast, still ahead. first, a look at stocks and last night's powerball numbers.

statement colored in different counties. well, we don't, so that pretty much takes care of any angst or consternation about what could be coming our way. whoa! [ laughter ] >> around dinner time to bedtime -- i was going to hit that and go into the currents. try that one more time. forget about that. i'll tell you, it's 34 degrees right now on tv hill. we were at about 24 when we started the show this morning. we're going to about 41 degrees this afternoon. let's go ahead and take a look at this graphic. that's pretty much going to tell the story of clear skies you saw over inner harbor east, starting to cloud up. what is the mechanism, may drive flurries our way. it's this area of low pressure passing well on by to the north, but it is going to swing some action off of lake effect our

way. i want to reverse that one more time. back to this graphic to show you one low passing way by to the north. what you'll see when we get to the computer model is tomorrow night, rather robust storm, area of low pressure passing by a little bit further south. and that is going to give us a period of mixed precip, maybe even a little bit of freezing rain before it goes to all rain and it's not going to be one of these deals where cold air jams up against the mountains. this will be a west to east model. could be a pretty sloppy afternoon. friday evening, into saturday, it is possible we could see a wintry mix in the area, maybe a couple inches of snow in the southern areas of the county, northern pennsylvania, into finger lakes region of new york. so 41 is going to be the high today. better yet, temperatures only in the mid-30s right now.

. when we talk about the fact that there are -- there's an area of low pressure passing north, there are going to be a few flurries. but the bigger issue is this low, bringing us a wintry mix tomorrow night and early saturday morning before turning to rain. that low saturday afternoon, night will bring half a foot of snow to foxborough,
