a new poll from the american research group shows romney neck and neck with gingrich, with only one more day to turn the tide of momentum. in charleston, south carolina, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> all of the candidates will debate each other tonight, before voters head to the polls on saturday. well, the wins are gone. we actually saw some sunshine today right now, though. skies are mostly cloudy. and it is cool. but there is some tricky weather, i am told, on the horizon. bob turk is in the weather center. >> let's take a look at radar. we have to the north and northwest of us now, a few snow showers picking up across the mountains. not much of that has reached the ground. the air is very dry right now. but we might see later tonight, a flurry across the region. but more significantly, there's another system that will affect our region. friday night, very late, after midnight. and saturday morning, across north central maryland.

rain-snow mixture, beginning, let's say, after midnight. a trace to an inch possible around here. south and east, where it's all rain. temperatures above freezing. however, from hagerstown, north and west, it's possible that we might see an extended period of freezing rain, maybe as much as a quarter inch of ice on trees and roadways. that's something we have to watch, saturday morning, out north and west of the city. temperatures probably in some of those valleys, will never get above freezing. that's why, instead of snow, the winter storm watch is for ice accumulations early on saturday morning. maybe even into noon on saturday in those areas north and west. mary? >> okay, bob. thank you. difficult decision. the penn state board of trustees reveals today why they felt they had to fire head football coach, joe paterno. alex demetrick is in the newsroom with more on what came out at an alumni meeting today. >> the trustees have not spoken

publicly since joe paterno's firing. the three key reasons, they say they had to let him go. his questioning the board's firing of jerry sandusky. and concern paterno could effectively coach in the face of the scandal. the trustees also say that while having fired paterno, they were still honoring the terms of his contract, and paying him as if he had retired at the end of the 2011 season. >> jerry sandusky is charged with assaulting 10 boys. he denies the allegations. rescue teams resume their search for victims of the costa concordia ship. 11 people are now confirmed today. -- dead. anna metraininga reports for wjz. we are hearing a new recording for the call for help. >> reporter: the italian coast guard called the costa concordia, to ask about troubles on board, after the ship ran aground. a crewmember does not say the

ship has hit reef, only we've had a blackout. we're checking the conditions. the coast guard asks if passengers have been told to put on life vests. the answer, i repeat, we are checking the conditions of the blackout. family members continue to arrive, as authorities released the identities of more victims. four french passengers, one spanish, and one italian. plus, a peruvian crewmember. a retired couple from minnesota is among the 21 still missing. italian officials are worried about the weather forecast. rough seas are expected and the ship could slide off the rocks and sink. if the fuel tanks break, the 500,000 gallons of fuel on board, could cause an environmental disaster. rescue crews set off controlled explosions, trying to open more areas of the ship for divers. >> her intention is still to find someone alive. and any way we're going to find

everybody to give them back to the family. >> reporter: crews are racing to complete the search before bad weather sets in. in jillio, italy, anna metranga, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the ship's captain is under house arrest, and could face charges of manslaughter. a woman who is dining with the captain says he did not abandon ship but stayed on board to help save passengers. well, desperate -- desperate times call for desperate measures. gas prices are so high that some people are actually stealing it. anne arundel county police are searching for the person stealing gas right from the tanks of parked cars. most gas tanks are plastic, but the drills being used are likely metal. and that creates a potentially explosive situation. several cars have been hit, including 11 brand-new trucksa a dealership. wjz will have much more on this problem, coming up all new at 5:00. toast tradition no more. last night, the famous cloaked

a visit to india lands some of oprah's security in hot water. oprah was visiting a senior citizens center when the indian bodyguards tried to block a local cameraman from filming. they were arrested but later apologized and were released. oprah's american bodyguards were not involved. this is her first trip to india, where she is filming her new show, "oprah's next chapter." phillies assistant coach, burned in a fire last month, remains in critical condition. the fire broke out january 6th, at kirby wilson's home. wilson was burned on more than 45% of his body.

the teen released a statement -- team released a statement also saying the 50-year-old suffered smoke inhalation. still no word on what caused the fire. using state of the art technology to save lives from fires, baltimore fire department is saving nearly $2 million in equipment. this grant was competitive to get. >> reporter: it's emergency situations like this, in which many times, ekg machines are essential in saving lives. and now, baltimore county would buy 60 new ones, thanks to a $1.75 million federal grant. >> this would allow us to update our career stations and many of our volunteer stations are with the latest technology, as it applies to really bringing people back to life with monitors. >> reporter: bo hatter's heart stopped beating on the basketball court and is alive today because of an ekg machine. >> i was very fortunate that the right people and the right equipment was available when it

number of people applying for unemployment benefits plunged last week to the lowest level of more than three years. applications fell by 50,000 to 352,000. signs that layoffs are easing. shares of morgan stanley rose. b of a returned to a profit fourth quarter. consumer prices were unchanged last month. it's the latest sign that inflation remains tame. lower gas prices also offset costs for food, medical care and housing. and photography icon, eastman kodak, has fired for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. it is now looking to raise cash and will conduct normal business operation. kodak was forced to file for bankruptcy after being unable to find a buyer for its patents. in all, builders broke ground on just 428,000 single- family homes nationwide last

it is clouding up. >> it is clouding up, isn't it? that changed in the last minute. >> it was sunny all day long. take a quick look at radar. we had a front to the west. had flurries across pennsylvania. a few of these flakes, reaching the ground. but the air here is very, very dry. it's going to take quite a bit for this to even reach the ground. a lot of what you see is what we call virga. in other words, a snowflake drops from the sky. and it evaporates before it reaches the ground. that's called virga.

we're well above freezing. but the dew point is very low, at 17 degrees. that's the temperature up in the clouds, where the condensation is going on, where the clouds are up there. yes, there are snowflakes. but it's so dry. coming down, they dry up. may not see any flurries. but it's possible later tonight. a few snow showers in the region. south/southwest winds now, actually at 9. that's going to change by tomorrow. 30.04, the barometer, just beginning to fall. 31 in oakland. they're going to see some snow showers. in fact, they may see an inch or two there. it's a little warmer to the south of us. temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s, to close to 40 across the region. now, couple of things we have to look at. the first thing is this front that is going to come through the area tonight. behind it, it will dry out somewhat. we'll see chilly air coming in for friday. but friday night and saturday morning, the storm that is moving across the upper northwest portion of the country, is going to quickly move with the jet stream across illinois, indiana, and west

virginia. friday night into saturday morning. what that means for us is, we'll see some mixed precipitation. because warm air is going to be coming in aloft. but we'll probably see at least a period of snow, sleet, and even some freezing rain. early on saturday morning. very late friday night, after midnight. and that way, we could probably see some travel issues early saturday morning. right now, you see that little band of snow across pennsylvania. most of it is passing just to our north, as you can clearly see. but we have a risk tonight of a few flurries. let's go back tonight to our graphic. this map here, with a few flurries. mild air coming from the southwest. how much of that mild air gets in here will determine how long we see that frozen precip. looks like to the west and north of us, it will last a lot longer. take a look at that graphic right now. here's what we expect out of that system. generally, friday night into side -- saturday morning. mainly, after snow and sleet changes to freezing rain, it

tina kraus reports for wjz, a massive rehearsal is under way this week to prevent terrorists from striking on the river tems. >> reporter: police and military boats are sweeping across london's river tems. elite officers are practicing high-speed drills to keep terrorists off the water during this summer's olympic games. authorities say there is no specific threat to the river that stretches 210 miles across england. but they're not taking any chances. >> we already have people in jail, in the uk, who are convicted. and we're talking about attacking 2012. so the motivation is there. >> reporter: security forces want to avoid a terror attack, like the one in mumbai, in 2008. when islamic terrorists snuck into the country through uncontrolled waterways, launching a deadly shooting spree. >> reporter: the tem snakes right through the heart of london. spectators are certain to pack these banks during the games. that's why security forces are

determined to keep the river safe. >> dozens of royal marines and police officers are teaming up to figure out the best tactics to patrol and protect the area. >> should we need military assistance, ensuring the military who will be working with us understand how we operate and we understand how they operate. >> reporter: in this exercise, they practice intercepting a suspicious boat. britain will deploy about 12,500 military and 13,500 military personnel during the game. authorities hope the massive show of force will be enough to keep terrorists away. in london, tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: and the 2012 olympic games take place from july 27th to august 12th. new developments tonight in the nuclear disaster from japan, following last week's earthquake and tsunami. mary bubala is here with more. >> the operators of japan's

fukushima nuclear plant, take a look inside one of the ruined reactors for the first time. officials say they hope the photos give a better idea of how high it is. tens of thousands of tons of contaminated water accumulated at the plant. the company is still traying to make sure raid -- trying to make sure radiation doesn't leak from the plant. the verdict for an alleged islamic extremist, who admitted killing two u.s. airmen at a germany airport last year is delayed. the german court says it needs to hear more evidence. arid uka, confessed to the killing at the airport. but now, they are casting doubt that he received terrorist training in bosnia after a recent article in a german newspaper. the court is waiting to question the person who wrote that article. the u.s. navy releases a picture of a crew aboard at

sea. the fishermen had been battling flooding for three days. the dewey crew provide food, water, fuel and other supplies before leaving. well, some scary moments at an airport in mississippi, as two planes just miss each other in the air. bob war has more for wjz, and what federal investigators are finding. >> federal safety investigators are blaming the near midair crash on an air traffic controller, who officials say have a history of disciplinary and job performance problems. >> reporter: the incident happened sunday afternoon, last june, at the biloxi gulf airport. a cessna with two people aboard was taken on a north-south runway. ntsb investigators say just seconds later, the same controller who was handling the cessna, cleared a continental regional jet, to be on an intersecting diagonal runway. both climbed on a collision

course, getting closer and closer together. before the faster commuter jet, with 53 people aboard, streaked in front of the slow, private plane. investigators say at their nearest point, the planes were the exact same altitude, and only 300 feet apart. according to the ntsb report, the captain remarked to his copilot, wow, that was close. >> investigators say he never told them he anticipated any problems, because he thought the cessna would be long gone. the faa says that controller was suspended but was later retrained and is now back on the job. bob orr, cbs news, washington. >> thank you, bob. a 30-year study provides more evidence tonight that using birth control can ease pain women experience during their period. until thou, -- now, there was limited evidence that the pill helped with cramps and other pain. but this study in sweden shows that women who use the pill suffered less severe pain than

those who didn't. this was published in the journal quality reproduction ." it has threatened millions of bats. a lethal fungus just a few years ago, unheard of, continues to spread. >> reporter: bats that once thrived in american caves, suddenly started dying during hibernation in large numbers in 2006. by 2010 -- >> some of the areas where it was first discovered, they're finding complete devastation. >> reporter: the killer is called white nose syndrome, for the fungus that forms around a bat's nose. for unknown reasons, bats stop hibernating and flying in winter. without insects, they starve to death. bats are now dying in 16 states, including maryland. >> we've discovered this syndrome in a number of important bat caves in maryland. >> reporter: but those caves are small, compared to indigo tunnel. >> you the want to -- you want

to take that side and i'll look over here. >> reporter: it is closely monitored by biologists. during this survey in 2010. >> and no dead bats, which is a very good sign. >> reporter: and still no sign of the fungus there today. >> we're extremely hopeful that we can keep it that way. >> reporter: u.s. wildlife estimates as many as 7 million bats have died. insects that eat crops that spread disease will increase. >> they can lead up to thousands of mosquito-sized bats each hour. >> they could develop a resistance to the fungus, if enough survive. >> i think it's early to talk about an extinction event. but it is a catastrophic event. >> reporter: for bats and people, alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> in agriculture alone, it is estimated bats save u.s. farmers a billion dollars a year in insect control. well, we had sunshine most of the day.

a daring rescue caught on tape in china. two firefighters used a ladder to rescue an elderly disabled woman who was trapped inside a burning apartment building. officials say the 70-year-old woman lives with her two daughters, but they weren't home when the fire broke out. the woman is being treated for minor injuries and no one else was hurt. more gruesome discoveries in the hollywood hills. police find severed hands and feet in the same area where a human head was spotted. serene branson has more for wjz. >> reporter: police kept watch over the crime scene, as investigators called off the search for the night. this, after revealing that two hands and two feet were discovered today, within 50 yards of the severed head in the hollywood hills. >> when someone commits a murder, you can dispose of the body in places that are less sensational. and with the hollywood sign,

you know, it may be heard around the world. >> reporter: dr. don hogueland, specializes in forensic psychology. he says this points to organized crime. in his experience, crimes of passion involve dumped bodies, not pieces with a message. >> it's almost like it's playing out. head, hands, feet. and now where's the torso and limbs? >> reporter: police may be able to answer those questions in the coming days. today, cadaver dogs located the hands and feet. >> we still believe that this crime occurred somewhere else and that the body parts were dumped somewhere in the canyon here at some point. >> reporter: we also talked with the dog walker. a golden retriever she had ferreted off the trail. >> i looked and it had rolled down and fell into the ravine. i thought it might be a soccer ball. i turned to my mom and said, it actually looked like a head. so we thought maybe it was some sort of a movie prop.

anthony was sporting in a video diary that surfaced last month. residents say they have seen anthony being escorted off the property by police. a chicago man turns his son in to police, after a brutal beating goes viral, you tube. derrick blakley reports for wjz. >> reporter: 17-year-old palomino was recognized in the video because he wasn't wearing a mask or hood. prosecutors say he could be seen punching and hitting the victim, hitting him with a shoe and slamming him to the ground. palomino's father said nothing after the bond hearing. but earlier, he told cbs 2, he talked to his son and is embarrassed and sorry. >> he is very upset. what he did was wrong. like i said, it's very disturbing, like the video. >> reporter: prosecutors say palomino stole the victim's wallet from his backpack, removed $180 and threw the wallet in a sewer.

bond was set at $100,000. and palomino's lawyers said his father couldn't pay. >> so effectively, we're punishing someone before they've been proven guilty. we're punishing an innocent kid now, and his family and his father. >> reporter: palomino has no criminal record. but his father, who turned him in, offered no excuses for his son's behavior, just apologies to the victim. >> i'm sorry for what happened to him. if there's anything i can do, i'd like to try to help him as much as i can. >> reporter: six others were charged with robbery and battery, as juveniles. in today's healthwatch, straight talk about smart phones. doctors say they are seeing an increase in posture-related issues, attributed to the use of smart phones. when we lean forward to send a text, we're actually increasing the strain on our necks. but doctors say there is a simple cure for the problems associated with this new phenommenon. some light exercise can do wonders for poor posture.

learn more and apply today at pnc.com/cashbuilder. pnc bank. for the achiever in you. mostly cloudy skies. a few flurries around the region. they've already picked up not too far from pittsburgh. about an inch of snow. that's in far western pennsylvania. maybe a few flurries tonight. you see radar, getting a little bit more moist. but the air is very dry, coming into this air mass. and it looks like it's going to take an awful lot to moisten it up. even for those flakes to reach the ground. up at 3,000 to 4,000 feet, where it's below freezing. it's still very dry on the ground. much of what you see on the ground is what we call virga.

it may be snowing. and then at 2,000 feet, it just evaporates, never reaches the ground. we'll see some of this. we'll keep track of it tonight. but this is not the storm we're talking about for late, late tomorrow night, and saturday morning. that is a more significant system. we'll talk about that in just a minute. take a look at temperatures right now. we're well above freezing at 38. 17, the dew point. quite dry, quite low. 42% humidity. south/southwest winds at 9. barometer, holding steady at 30.0 inches. close to 40 down to the south. you can see hagerstown coming in at 34. the dew point is low. so that precipitation is going to take -- the dew point really has to get into the 20s at least for that precip, i think, to even reach the ground. so late tonight, when you're driving around, you might see some snow showers or a few flurries. then it will quickly end after midnight. tomorrow will be a basically sunny or partly cloudy day. 38, annapolis, and kent island. rock hall. 36. here's why. one front coming through

tonight. maybe snow showers. more significant area of low pressure moving across montana. but it's being quickly fed off to the east by the jet stream. and north of that, it's very cold air. south of it, it's mild. in between, that's where we're seeing the precipitation breaking out. there's rain, snow. by the time it reaches our region, early saturday morning, i'm talking like after midnight tomorrow night, it will probably be cold enough for a period of snow, sleet and yes, even some freezing rain. right now, you can see the snow out to the west of us. most of it passing to our north. however, friday night, into saturday morning. the next system coming in with that precip, mild air trying to get in here. it looks like the low pressure will pass right across our region. north of us, mainly snow across pennsylvania and new york. new york city could get 2 to 3 inches of snow. even harrisburg could get 1 to 3 inches. for our region, here's what we expect out of that system, late friday night, and early on saturday morning. take a look at this graphic we put together for you. all rain south and east of us, maybe up to an inch of snow and

sleet. and some freezing rain. but north and west, looks like the cold air may hold in long enough for mainly freezing rain from hagerstown, north and west. that's something we have to watch. north winds on the bay tomorrow. coming in at 5 to 10 knots. so they're southwest now. but they shift. tonight, then, maybe some flurries later on. 28 by morning. and tomorrow, sunshine. followed by increasing clouds. breezy, temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s. and late tomorrow night, after midnight. some snow, sleet, freezing rain. that's when we could see icy conditions will the patriots win this weekend? well, many ravens fans say no dice. i'm gigi barnett. coming up, the place where they can get all of their purple passion gear,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
