hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> and i'm jessica cart tallia. here's what people are talking about. >> reporter: the chance of a messy mix in maryland. outside tonight, it is cloudy and cool. but we're tracking the potential for snow on the way. bob turk has a look at live doppler radar and the conditions that could impact the state. bob? >> we have a few snow showers tonight. later tonight, across the region. nothing heavy. but we might see a few flurries and a little bit of snow shower activity late tonight. the main system, however, is going to be coming tomorrow night, very late, into saturday, noon. here's what we expect, as far as that storm is concerned. across our region. essentially, across northern maryland, a trace of snow, sleet, and maybe as much as an inch, beginning after midnight,

into saturday morning. now, north and west of us, where that cold air is going to hold in much longer, there may be an extended period of freezing rain, maybe as much as a quarter inch accumulating on trees and power lines, after about a half inch of snow. south and east of us, we're looking at all rain. it's going to be too warm. the weather service has extended a winter storm watch for garrett, allegheny, and southern pa counties there, as well as washington county. that's where we expect to see the issues with this storm. now, when we take a look at this situation, the low passing to the north of us. to the north, accumulating snow. in foxboro, could see 1 to 3 inches of snow. harrisburg, 1 to 3 inches. a mix here, as you can see. and rain south and east of the baltimore region. so there could be some serious slick issues saturday morning, particularly north and west of the baltimore region. we'll beec checking that out for you during the next 24 hours. mary? >> bob, thank you. and stay with wjz for first warning weather, to find

this is spring street. firefighters were called to the scene of a possible carbon monoxide incident. upon arrival, they found an adult, suffering from symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure. they actually took that person to shock trauma. the condition of that person is not known at this time. they transported a second person from this residence. so apparently they did find a positive carbon monoxide reading inside the residence. they were able to evacuate some of that carbon monoxide from the home. as you see, bge has arrived on the scene. they have not determined the cause of the incident at this point. and we do not know how serious the injuries are to both persons that were transported to shock trauma. back to you on tv hill. >> captain mike, thank you. police are trying to stop a growing trend here in maryland. thieves are stealing gasoline right out of people's cars. wjz is live in north baltimore. derek valcourt explains the reeptdz wave of these crimes.

derek? >> you can blame this on the high prices. but it appears for some crooks, gasoline is the new gold. >> reporter: more than 900 gallons of gas stolen from this hyattsville gas station, after thieves tampered with gas pumps, literally prying them open. this surveillance camera, shows the coordinated heist, with car after car, then fueling up at the broken pump, without paying a dime. >> these gas prices. you never can tell what people are doing. >> reporter: several others report similar large haf scale ripoffs. -- large-scale ripoffs. police there aware of the situation and say they have made similar arrests before. and it's not gas station thieves are targeting. some of them will steal the gas right out of your car's tank. and you won't believe how. yep, thieves are literally drilling holes directly into gas tanks. >> it makes me feel really bad about people. >> reporter: it happened to

betty in her sun day left empty. >> that seems like a lot of trouble to get gas. >> reporter: she isn't alone. police in tacoma park report holes were drilled in gas tanks. and down in annapolis, toyota dealership, on west street, a dozen small trucks have been targeted in the last week. >> some of your pickups have 34- gallon tanks in it. >> reporter: authorities say drilling into a gas tank is a potentially explosive situation. >> i think they're stupid. eventually, it's going to blow up. >> reporter: if you're a victim, not only are you out a tank of gas. but the car repair isn't cheap either. most mechanics recommend that you replace the entire gas tank if someone has drilled a hole in it. that will run you about $500. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, derek. thank you. police in several other states have reported similar snentdzs of people drilling holes into gas tanks there. a murder at a baltimore

playground. right now, police are searching for the gunman. denise is in the newsroom, following the case for us. denise? >> reporter: police say a man walking his dog stumbled upon the body in baltimore. the victim had been shot in the head in the 4300 block of cedar garden road. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. and police are working to identify him. the area was surrounded by homes. but it is unclear if there are request witnesses. >> so far -- if there are any witnesses. so far, their no suspects in the case. rick perry is out. the texas governor abandons his white house bid. and there are bombshell claims from newt newt newt gingrich's ex-wife. this comes just two days before the pivotal south carolina primary. >> reporter: rick perry is headed back to texas, and throwing his support behind newt gingrich. >> and newt is not perfect. but who among us is? >> reporter: perry's exit from the race and his endorsement, came just minutes after abc news released an interview with

iowa. besting romney by 34 votes. a new poll from the american research group, shows romney neck and neck with gingrich, with only one more day to turn the tide of momentum. in charleston, south carolina, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> all of the candidates will debate each other tonight, before voters head to the polls on saturday. for the third straight year, the famous poe toaster is a no-show. for decades, a mysterious man commemorated the birthday of edgar allen poe, by leaving roses and cognac at the grave. the curator of the house of poe museum said there was a few-- there were a few impostors last night. but the official toaster never came. this, then, ends the tradition dating back to the 1940s. apparently it was a father and two sons who were initially carrying this out. and it silently went away. >> and poe is wondering where

using state of the art technology to save lives. the baltimore county fire department is receiving nearly 2 million in equipment. this grant was competitive to get. >> reporter: it's emergency situations like this, in which many times, ekg machines are essential in saving lives. and now, baltimore county will buy 60 new ones, thanks to a $1.75 million federal grant. >> this will allow us to update our career stations and many of our volunteer stations are with the latest technology as it applies to really bringing people back to life with cardiac monitors. >> reporter: bo hatter's heart stopped beating on the basketball court. and he is alive today because of an ekg machine. >> i was very important that there are right people and the right equipment was available when it was needed. >> reporter: the county's older models have saved thousands of lives. but are now 10 years old. the new ones are state of the

all righty. some clouds in the region right now. but so far, quiet. still above freezing. but later tonight, maybe a few snow showers or flurries in the region. then we'll see more sunshine tomorrow. and then tomorrow night, late, talking very late, basically saturday morning. that's when we can see some mixed mess across much of the region. we'll talk about that in a minute. take a look at temps now. we're at 37 degrees right now. 32 in oakland. 34 in cumberland. and 37 in ocean city. 40 in washington. locally, mid-30s, mostly areas close to 40 in annapolis. and 39 in kent island. 36, rock hall. and we've had clouds in the air. we're had no precipitation. later tonight, a little batch of light flurries might move across the region. across the great lakes. this is essentially, an arctic front. there's pretty cold air behind it. but the bulk of this cold air is going to stay across the

great lakes. and northern sections of the eastern united states. essentially from new york state. we'll be in some of the cool air. cool enough, we think, from the beginning of the prez cipitation late-- precipitation. snow, sleet, and freezing rain. that's where the problems are. the low pressure out here. that's the one that is going to cause the precipitation. this may bring us some flurries late tonight. but the bulk of this right now is going to go across pennsylvania, as you can see. looks like we may just see a little flurry of activity late tonight. not a great chance. but tomorrow, we get into sunshine. and then the next system, rolling down from the north and northwest. mild air ahead of it. that mild air overruns the cold air. and precipitation breaks out. the question is, exactly how much warm air can get in here before the precip can get out of here? looks like north and west. take a look at this graphic. that's where we're going to see the bulk of these issues. mainly freezing rain north of us. may see an inch of snow.

may be a trace to an inch and a little trace of rain before it eventually changes to rain on saturday. just rain south and east of the region. because temperatures will be just too mild. on the bay, the water temperatures, still at 40. north winds behind the front at 5 to 10 knots. as you can see, that sunrise, 7:23. and it celts at 5 -- set at 5:13. tonight, maybe a few snow showers and flurries. 28. but no issues. tomorrow, sun, clouds, breezy, 38. after midnight, kind of a mixed mess, moving into the region. late tomorrow night, if you're driving around, you may run into some slick spots. watch out for that. it has killed millions of bats and threatensens to kill many more. a lethal fungus, unheard of in the u.s. just a few years ago, continues to spread. maryland is now in the middle of it. >> reporter: bats that once thrived in american caves, suddenly started dying during hibernation in large numbers in

2006. by 2010 -- >> some of those areas where it was first discovered, they're finding complete devastation. >> reporter: the killer is called whitenose syndrome, for the fungus that forms around a bat's nose. for unknown reasons, bats stop hibernating and start flying in winter. without insects, they starve to death. bats are now dying in 16 states, including maryland. >> we've discovered, white nose syndrome in a number of our important bat caves in maryland. >> reporter: but those caves are small, compared to indigo tunnel. >> you want to go take that side, and i'll look over here? >> reporter: it is maryland's largest spot for hibernating bats. and it's closely monitored by biologists. during this survey in 2010. >> no dead bats, which is a very good sign. >> reporter: and still, no sign of the fungus there today. >> we're extremely hopeful that we can keep it that way. >> reporter: u.s. wildlife officials estimate as many as 7 million bats have died. there's no way to stop it. and as bats vanish, insects

cities and counties, too. often times, they stick a lower budget figure in there. and then if it snows more, they just find the money. but this year, looks like they may have some money left over. >> bright sun, cold air. bare bear tree -- bare trees. a huge stockpile of salt, stashed around the state. in 2010, we broke records. remember the term "snow- magedon"? now woo can't find a flake -- we can't find a flake. . >> well, that has been a topic of conversation recently. >> reporter: and with it not in the cross hairs. the snow hasn't been missed here. >> i don't want to see it. not good for business, you know. >> passable streets don't get this way with salt alone. it takes money, and a lot of it. >> it would be nice to have a lot of snow. and i go, no, it really wouldn't. >> two years ago, the county

spent $20 million to clear that snow. this year, $6.5 million is budgeted. >> the good news is, so far, we haven't spent any of that $6 million. busy -- >> reporter: but just because the city and counties haven't spent that money, that doesn't mean the same for the state. >> we've had a few calls out where there's possibly ice or snow for the weekend. so it took about $14 million. >> this year, $36 million is in the budget. >> in this case, woo f we knock on wood -- if we knock on wood, don't have to use it, we could use it towards repairs. >> reporter: should the weather pattern change, everyone says they have the salt and the budget to get the job done. reporting live, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. jessica, back to you. >> maryland could see some snow -- snow in the next few days. bob turk is tracking live doppler radar. >> you heard.

let's take a look at live doppler radar. nothing to accumulate, except across portions of central pennsylvania. a light dusting. around here, a few flurries. however, a more significant system that we have been telling you about, late tomorrow night and on friday. here's what we -- on saturday, excuse me. saturday morning. here's what we expect across northern maryland. snow, sleet and yes, ice, or freezing rain. a trace to maybe an inch here. north to northwest ward, colder air, staying much longer. mainly a freezing rain situation. that could be as much as a quarter inch of ice up there. north of that region, that's why we do expect to see some issues with driving and wires can get loaded with ice. could be some issues up there, basically north and west of the city, saturday morning. and it could last for a while. one area of low pressure moving across the region to the north tonight, gives us a few flurries. but the next system coming across our region. late friday night and saturday. rain to the south, with

accumulating snow with chains. up to foxboro, could see up to 2 to 3 inches on saturday. if you head up that way, you'll probably run into snow. early saturday morning, you'll probably run into snow, sleet and freezing rain. at least for a while on saturday morning. >> all right, bob. thank you. an update tonight, to repairs to a famous landmark, damaged in the earthquake. a billionaire is donating the final $7.5 million needed to fix the cracks in the washington monument. david rubenstein. the repairs are expected to begin in august and will take one year to complete. rubenstein grew up in baltimore and gradualitied from -- graduated from city college. cruise ship that crashed offer the coast of italy. 11 people are now confirmed dead. anna metranga reports for wjz. investigators continue to piece together what happened to the costa concordia. >> reporter: the italian coast guard called the costa concardia, to ask about reports

of trouble on board, after the ship ran aground. a crewmember did not say the ship has hit a reefux only -- reef, only, we've had a blackout, we are checking conditions. >> reporter: the coast guard says the passenger -- asks if the passengers have been asked to put on life vests. the answer, i repeat, we are checking the blackout. >> reporter: four french passengers, one spanish, and one italian. plus, a peruvian crewmember. a retired couple from minnesota, is among the 21 still missing. >> reporter: italian officials are worried about the weather forecast. rough seas are expected. and the ship could slide off the rocks and sink. if the fuel tanks break, the 500,000 gallons of bule on board could cause an environmental disaster. rescue crews set off controlled explosions, trying to open more

areas of the ship for divers. >> our intention is still to find someone alive. and any way we're going to find everybody to give them back to the family. >> reporter: crews are racing to complete the search before bad weather sets in. in jillio, italy, oops anna metranga, wjz eyewitness news. >> the ship's captain is under arrest and could face charges of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship. today, police are searching a hollywood park, where several bodies were discovered. >> reporter: it all started when a dog walker found a severed head near the famous hollywood sign. since then, police have also discovered a pair of hands and feet. a new search today is focused on seven acres, surrounding a hiking trail. investigators are also checking dental records, fingerprints, and missing persons reports, in an effort to identify the male

victim. police now believe the man is about 45 to 60 years old. jessica? >> so far, there's no motive for the killing. police believe the body parts all belong to one person. a major security breach at a texas airport. it happened when a woman makes it through security and onto a plane with a handgun. tsa agents noticed a weapon in the woman's carry-on bag. but she walked away observe the screening was over. officials were not able to locate her for about 90 minutes. and they did not, though, alert the pilot of the problem, until after the flight left the gate. the woman tells police, she forgot the gun was in her bag. president obama wants to ease travel restrictions into the u.s., in order to boost tourism. the president issued an executive order today, aiming to increase tourist visa professing in china. the move say its will make it easier for visitors to come in from the u.s.

a daring rescue, caught on tape in china. two firefighters used a ladder to rescue an elderly disabled woman, who was trapped inside a burning apartment building. officials say the 70-year-old lives with her two daughters, but they weren't home when the fire broke out. the woman is being treated for some minor injuries. no one else was injured. a visit to india lands some of oprah's security team in hot water. oprah was visiting a senior citizens center, when indian bodyguards tried to block a local cameraman from filming. they were arrested but later apologized and were released. oprah's american bodyguards weren't involved. this is her first trip to india, where she's filming her new show, "oprah's next chapter." still to come tonight on eyewitness news. thieves no longer want your money. some of them want your liquid assets. and you won't believe the brazen and dangerous way deli-style delic-ious-ity:
