hello everybody i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. we're bracing for winter weather tonight. >> the year's first winter storm the moving closer and it could bring rain, sleet, and snow. school districts including baltimore city have already cancelled saturday activities. looking live outside tonight, some flakes are already falling on tv hill. bob turk is live tracking the storm headed in our direction, bob. >> let's take a look at radar. little bands of snow beginning to accumulate in some spots

west of us. continue to move into the region, now around the city, a little band right through the city. down to fredrick, and further south a little bit of sleep beginning to mix in across extreme portions of region. what do we expect from this tomorrow afternoon? to the north of city, mix to ice to rain maybe staying as freezing rain. one to three inches up there. about a trace of an inch here to d. c. mainly rain south of the region. we do have winter weather advisories into effect just going to effect. and all through the morning tomorrow. all across much of the state of maryland. southern portions of the eastern shore and much of delaware, not under any advisories. mainly because of rain in the region. i'll have the very latest on the storm on what saturday will bring. we'll have the full forecast in

just a few minutes, denise. >> wjz13 is always on, check in for first warning weather coverage and live doppler radar any time. log on to wjz.com. developing news in west baltimore. police are searching for a killer, two men were shot tonight. one went to the hospital before police arrived. police aren't releasing any other details. a 7-year-old and 10-year- old were trapped in their bedrooms in the burning home early this morning. their mother and six firefighters were also hurt in the fire. investigators aren't sure what sparked the blaze. rough seas have caused the costa concorida cruise ship shift again. this is making it difficult for divers searching for those missing. 11 people are confirmed dead.

surprising. megan mckorkel. >> the man accused for that theft speaks to us. >> i had major dealers wanting to buy some of stuff i never wanted to let go. >> reporter: but $68,000 of artifacts stolen from his home. >> it's a lifetime of collecting is now gone. >> reporter: police traced the theft to this man. now a startling new revelation, police believe that boing tried to make a get away he hit a bicyclists with his car then took off leaving that man fighting for life. when police found his car this is what it looked like. massive damage to the front end consistent with hitting a person. the side mirror was missing from the suspect's car. the same side mirror that was

found at the hit-and-run scene. >> we were able to match up with the blue tape that was on the vehicle itself when the vehicle was hit. >> i had no idea about the lit and run. i knew his truck was wrecked, his van was wrecked. >> reporter: jason bannis worried about the family of that bicyclist, he is also feeling a loss, his prized memorabilia has never been recovered. we learned that the bicyclists has survived and has been released from the hospital. >> megan, thank you. we did a little digging and found boing has a criminal history. he's been convicted of theft at least twice. extra security around the john hopkins campus tonight after a woman fights off an attacker at a near by park. the man exposed himself to two women sitting on a bench last night at the park on greenway. when the women ran away, he grabbed one of them and tried to rape her. she managed to escape but so

did her attacker. occupy protesters are not willing to give up. mike hellgren explains they had no plans to back down. >> reporter: occupy is not giving up, rallying again at war memorial plaza and vowing to make her voices hear. police hauled away a fake rec center and threatened them with arrest. they're ending a week that began with explosive protests landing six people of occupy baltimore in jail overnight. the demonstrators believe the the facility is a waste of taxpayer dollars. money that would be better spent on rec centers and services. >> we want to save the rec centers, we want to save our

snow in central maryland right now. terrifying ride to school for some children in alabama. police say their bus ended up on its side when it couldn't negotiate a curve and it drove off the road. at least a dozen children were taken to the hospital. one student did suffer a broken arm. well tonight we have just learned what sparked the nevada wildfire that has forced dozens of people to evacuate. an elderly man admits his fireplace ashes started the fire and he tells investigators he is full of remorse. as blackstone tells us, for some people the damage has been done. >> reporter: flames raced into the mountains and into reno's suburbs. >> just the wind sort of blowing it. dropping it. >> it was coming one way and it

would go this way. it was popping from one area to the next. >> reporter: how scary was that? >> i was terrified. i didn't know what to do. >> reporter: she rushed to pack photographs into her car as sheriff deputies ordered an evacuation. >> how fast did they say get out of here? >> 15 minutes, five minutes. she kept pushing me. i threw the dog in the car. she was yelling in the street, you have to leave, you have to leave. >> reporter: the fire was burning fast. >> i got more and more panic as i drove. >> reporter: he got out but couldn't bring the horse. >> i would hate to think she died in a fire, that would be awful. >> reporter: at an animal rescue center this afternoon, they learned their horse had been saved. john blacstone, cbs news, reno. the elderly man responsible for starting the fire is

cooperating with investigators. but it is not clear if he will be facing criminal charges. 12 teenage girls from the same town believe they contracted a mysterious illness. they started showing symptoms like terex. no agents were the cause, parents think the state's testing was not complete enough. they are also not satisfied with the opinion of a doctor who examined all of the girlless. he says it's a conflict which resulted in mass hysteria. his prognosis is for a complete recovery. a man is recovering after a terrible accident involving a nail gun. the result is a 12-inch nail in dante's head. tragedy was averted by just a

few millimeters. former kidnapping victim elizabeth smart is now engaged. the 24-year-old will likely get married this summer. smart was abducted from her home when she was 14. she was rescued nine months later. bryan david mitchell was convicted of kidnapping and sexual assault. no details were released about smart's husband to be. she was one of the pioneers of rhythm and blues and soul. the legendary etta james has passed away. >> ♪ that's james singing her hit song "at last." she had a string of hits, james was a three time grammy award winner. she died from complications with leukemia. etta james was 73 years old. well the snow blowers and plows were out in force in chicago. winter weather crippled the evening commute and also caused

the cancellation of more than 600 flights. the city says the full fleet of plows are on the road and up to 8-inches is expected in chicago -- poor maryland. in chicago. >> a little breezy for maryland. it's chilly out there. it's pretty much ending in chicago and just beginning here. took all day to get here. taáeubg a look at ray -- take a look at radar. little bands moving in. some warmer air is coming in over head. i expect the snow to last probably till 3:00 a.m. from now until 2:00 or 3:00. we expect a little accumulation particularly around the city and north to the pennsylvania border. south of us it's going to start mixing with sleet. setting up to p.a., maybe one to 3-inches can accumulation kind of quickly. then we see a bit of a break and a few bands of precept moving into the region. with warmer air coming in, it's

generally going to be sleet and freezing rain. eventually ending as rain. it's not going to get real warm tomorrow. we're lucky to get to 34. let's take a look at temperatures around the region. right now we're down to 31. dewpoint is up from four to 12 degrees. 44% humidity. it's a lot more moist than it was earlier. south wind at five. the barometer is actually risen. 30.25-inches. 31 ocean city and 30 with light snow in dc. 30 in oakland with snow there. 39 bell air. it hasn't snowed there yet but it's going to. and columbia snow, westminster snow as well 29. 36, 29 today. and the record 71 and three below zero. right now we have a southerly and easterly wind that's keeping that moisture in. we had a north wind all day long. but that wind has shifted a little bit. we're going to get some of this warm air coming from the south.

it's been in the 40s in virginia. that warm air is coming in over top of a cold air. so you don't have a column of below freezing air from the clouds to the ground. that's why you get a change from snow to sleet, rain or freezing rain. all depends on the temperatures around. see this first band of precept around. there's more to the west. we'll be dealing with this probably through the early afternoon hours of tomorrow. but in between, that warm air starts moving in. that's what will cause the change to sleet, freezing rain eventually rain. now on sunday, maybe an east wind is going to kick in. we expect a shower or drizzle in the afternoon. temperatures again a little warmer above freezing in the mid-30s. north wind in the bay tomorrow. they'll be shifting at 10 to 15 knots. tonight snow is already here, a mix very shortly. 27 by morning. not going to drop a whole lot. 34 by morning, don't drive in the morning if you don't have to. wait until the afternoon when it's a little warmer and conditions will be a lot better

and their tight end tandem that he passes to. now the ravens are rather fond of the guys they have playing the tight end position. dennis p to the best -- pitt and ed dixon. these two have emerged as potent we'lls on baltimore's offense. in new england they have taken the tight end to a new level. aaron hernandez and rob grownskowski two of the best. the ravens are well aware of what's ahead on sunday. >> these are just two other great tight ends that can stretch well on the field or work the middle and do some other things and they also can block. there's not really many flaws there. but it's a great challenge and we're up for it. >> we can do even better than they're doing right now. they're asking what their teams wants them to do and vice versa here with us. we both win in games. it's going to come up to this match up in the game.
