hi, everybody. i'm mary but bama. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what we're talking about. >> we'll begin with a serious crash in towson. captain mike is over the scene. >> this is actually in timonium. where baltimore county police were surveiling a vehicle that was wanted in reference to multiple burglaries in the northern baltimore county area. apparently the police helicopter was following a vehicle driving southbound on dulaney valley road. coming through the reservoir area. apparently on the wrong side of the road, much of the time. when that vehicle suddenly collided head-on with an suv, driving it into another work truck, now at this time, there

is one person being transported to shock trauma. that is the driver and allegedly one of the suspects of a stolen vehicle. he's being transported to shock trauma, in critical condition. the drivers of the other two vehicles are lesser injured. and they are being transported to local area hospitals. their condition is not known at this hour. now, baltimore county police do have dulaney valley road closed in both directions. this is going to be north of pot spring road, on dulaney valley, south of timonium. so if you're in this area, you want to avoid it for sometime. baltimore county police will continue their investigation. we understand that this occurred as a result of multiple burglaries in northern baltimore county. police have been searching for two suspects. we know that one other suspect apparently bailed out of this suspect vehicle, up in the merriman's mill, jaredsville pike area. that person is in police custody at this hour, with no

significant injury. again, the driver of this car, the suspect is being transported to shock trauma in critical condition. back to you on tv hill. >> this crash, as you can imagine, it's affecting traffic. let complete coverage continue with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. kristy, we know dulaney valley road is a heavily traveled road in northern baltimore county. >> we don't know how long it's going to be shut down. but as you can see, quite a mess. a lot of emergency medical equipment on the scene. the crash again at ivy church road. right now, we have a significant delay. and as he mentioned, it is closed, north of pot spring road, back to east timonium. so the best area would be to avoid that if at all possible. but we'll continue to bring you up to date if the situation progresses. joe paterno fans, in huge numbers. they filled the campus of penn state university today. some criticizing others who recently didn't support the long-time coach.

manuel gallegus reports for wjz from state college, pennsylvania. >> reporter: thousands lined up for a public viewing of former penn state football coach, joe paterno. earlier, there was a private viewing for those who knew best. >> bryant johnson told us joe paterno is the reason he succeeded in life. >> he was a wonderful mentor as well. not only did he teach us the game of football. but he told us, most of us came in as boys and left the university as men. >> reporter: also in the crowd of mourners, former assistant coach, mike mcqueary, a key witness in the child molestation scandal that led to the firing. he said he didn't want to speak today out of respect for the coach. >> reporter: penn state officials say they are working on plans for a lasting way to honor the former coach.

all right. we're going to update the breaking news in baltimore county. one person is rushed to shock trauma, following a head-on collision in the lutherville area. it happened in the dulaney valley area. police tell us they were following a burglary suspect vehicle, when it crashed into an oncoming car. it does appear, as we can see, a third vehicle was also involved. a total of four people are hurt. causing major delays in that corridor in baltimore county. complete coverage continues live at wjz traffic control. kristy breslin, following the traffic caused by this crash. >> reporter: the crash was at dulaney valley road. as we had mentioned, there is going to be a significant backup in that area. right now, it is closed off north of pot spring road, back

police were following a car, but not pursuing a burglary suspect. at some point, the burglary suspect vehicle sped up and near the county shooting range on dulaney valley road, hit another vehicle head-on. a third vehicle also reportedly was involved. the -- driver of the suspect vehicle flown with life- threatening injuries to shock trauma. he has just died. three others suffered less serious injuries. wjz will continue to update this breaking story. the story we're watching closely, mitt romney releases his tax returns after close pressure from his rivals. his financial histy is drawing sharp criticism from the other presidential candidates. [ applause ] >> reporter: mitt romney and newt gingrich are sparring over each other's business dealings. romney is calling out over the former house speaker for doing consultant work with mortgage giant freddie mac. but gingrich says he's not the one tied to the housing lender.

the former massachusetts governor released his tax returns. he made more than $40 million in the past two years and paid $2.6 million in income taxes. most of his income is from investments. so his effective tax rate is 15% this year. that's much less than most millionaires pay. romney would pay under gingrich's tax plan, which would eliminate capital gains entirely. romney also showed he donated $7 million to charity in 2010 and 2011, much of that going to the mormon church. rick santorum is trying to make -- take advantage of the war on words. he says americans need a positive message. >> we don't need candidates with serious problems and flaws. >> reporter: florida's primary is one week away. and so far, polls have gingrich in the lead.

rock wall doing a salute. captain schettino is facing several charges, including manslaughter. don't be surprised if airline tickets appear to be more expensive in the next few days. new department of transportation rules will take effect thursday, requiring airlines to list prices with the taxes and fees included. it's part of initiative to crack down on airlines and travel discounters who pull customers in with misleading advertisements. and could hold the cure for major cause of blindness. but it comes with some controversy. mary has more on this. >> it is still early. but the treatment has yielded some very positive results. macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in older americans and has very few treatments. surgeons modify human embryonic stem cells into a patient's eye and say their vision began to return just two weeks later.

serious crash. three cars collide, seriously injuring several people. >> wjz is on the scene, with breaking details. hi. i'm kai jackson. >> i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. we continue to follow the breaking news out of baltimore county. wjz is live at the scene of that deadly wreck in timonium. meghan mccorkell has the latest for us. >> reporter: you can see that delaney vealt road is still shut down -- valley road is still shut down right here behind me, after the accident involving two burglary suspects. police tell me those two suspects were driving down delaney boulevard, in a honda accord. police had noticed them and there had been an alert put out for them earlier from a burglary. that's when the suspects tried to get away, after they noticed police behind them. they hit a
