political event in tucson. it started last night at the state of the union address. the room erupted in cheers when she entered, and president obama greeted her with a long embrace. colleagues on both sides of the aisle had warm words, as giffords' husband, mark kelly, watched from the galley. >> gabby's courage, strength, and downright fortitude are an inspiration to all of us and all americans. >> she has brought the word dignity to new heights. [ applause ] >> reporter: once her letter had been read to the house, giffords herself walked it over to speaker john boehner, who was moved to tears as members rose to a standing ovation. giffords' farewell may be just a temporary break from temp public life. i will recover and return, she said, in her resignation letter. and we will work together

ship. a big victory today for the navy seal team that killed osama bin laden. overnight, they rescued an american aide worker being held by pirates in somalia. tina kraus reports for wjz with more on the covert raid. >> reporter: the same u.s. navy seals who killed osama bin laden, rescued american jessica but buchanan. seal team six parachuted in. they ambushed. special forces killed nine pirates in a gun fight, then freed the aid workers who had been held hostage for three months. both will soon be reunited with their families. president obama didn't mention the raid in his state of the union address tuesday night. but just before he spoke, he congratulated defense secretary leon pineta. >> good job tonight. good job tonight. >> reporter: the president later called buchanan's father with the good news his daughter

cancer. a campus memorial service is scheduled for tomorrow. not long ago, a jury decides a sheriff's deputy is not liable in a wrongful death lawsuit involving the death of 29-year-old jurel gray. he was hit twice by a police officer's taser. gray's family filed a $145 million lawsuit against the deputy. wjz is at the courthouse. hear from the sheriff's deputy, coming up new at 5:00 and 6:00. the man charged in the murder of a laurel woman is due in court today. jessica kartalija has more on the suspect. >> steven mcdaniel is being arraigned today on murder charges. he's charged with killing lauren giddings. she was last seen in georgia on june 25th. five days later, police found her torso, wrapped in a plastic bag, in a garbage bin near her apartment.

prosecutors planned to notify mcdaniel today that he faces the death penalty if convicted in giddings' murder. >> lauren giddings grew up in laurel, prince george's county. a wild end to a spree. police say a man fleed in a getaway car crash and died. >> reporter: burglary suspect who crashed and died. aaron mccoy, jr., has a lengthy record, especially for his age. he had just turned 20. he had been found guilty of a large theft and eluding police. >> what a crash. >> reporter: police say a brazen burglary spree ended yesterday with this tangled mess of cars along the road. investigators say they spotted the getaway car wanted in a series of burglaries in northern baltimore county and tried to pull it over, but the driver took off, only slowing momentarily, so one of the men inside could jump out. minutes later, that driver, 21-

year-old aaron nathaniel mccoy, jr., crashed and died. dottie kelso heard the commotion. >> it's a shame the whole thing had to happen. i guess it's just part of the times that we live in. >> reporter: police tell wjz they did not chase anyone. >> a high-speed chase is always risky entertriez priez. -- enterprise. it takes a lot of skill for officers to embark on one. it was a moot point in this case. this was a situation where our officer tried to pull someone over. he didn't comply. at that point, we pulled our patrol cars back and decided we would following the -- follow the suspect vehicle from the air. >> reporter: besides mccoy, three other people were involved in the crash. no one had life-threatening injuries. >> the two vehicles actually lock and then collide with a truck that's in the opposite lane. the whole mess crashes into a telephone pole. >> authorities caught the man who fled the car before the crash and are questioning him.

>> the end result is that this has been going on here for the past week is done and gone. >> reporter: the councilman credits them with being very alert about this burglary spree and getting a good description of that getaway car. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> and police have now identified and charged mccoy's accomplice, 21-year-old genard tolliver. he's now in the baltimore county detention center, on half a million bond. rescued. right now, recovering at shock trauma. it happened. the 21-year-old man was in a special hopkins exploration class when the accident occurred. he became stuck in the mouth of the cave. rescue crews worked for five hours to free him. mccaveer is expected to recover from his injuries. see pictures all new at 5:00 and 6:00. it is another mild, winter

a woman is certainly lucky to be alive, after spending nearly five days in a rental car, stuck in a pond. police say 61-year-old lynn kessler took a wrong turn on her way to a hotel, and ended up in a drainage pond. she flashed her lights and honked her horn, but nobody responded. kessler said she survived by

eating m&ms and drinking bottled water, before managing to make it out of her car and getting to a nearby house for help. two months after her public split from ashton kutcher, actress demi moore is getting public help for depression. she was rushed to the hospital. she was supposed to appear in a film "love lace." but a spokesperson says she has dropped out of that project. today, baltimore musician mario is helping city students with their struggles. in this school watch report, andrea fujii shows us a new program that kicks off today. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: singer mario is outspoken when it comes to his mother, who was a heroin addict. now, through his mario do right foundation, the baltimore

pretty mild day outside. in fact, bern before i came into work, mary would be happy to know this. i was out without my jacket on. living on the edge of life. >> you are a rebel out there. but it's just been so nice the past couple of days around here. we were very cold for a stretch, heading into the weekend. we got that ice and snow. then yesterday, we got up to 59 degrees. we report quite there today. pretty nice. enough so you can go outside without your jacket, kai. the clouds are coming in as the next storm approaches. as far as temperatures go, the winds have turned around to the southeast. and that's not allowing us to get to the east. overall, we're about continue degrees -- it 10 degrees cooler

than we were justice. -- yesterday. and look at these temperatures. compared to our averages, we topped out at 49 today. the average is 42. this is also worth noting. the average is starting to step up once again. we bottomed out, 33 degrees. now on the way back up. we have cool air coming our way eventually. here's the overall picture. clouds starting to come in from it right now. they're going to thicken up overnight. and the storm arrives late tonight into early tomorrow morning. now, it's going to bring in warmer air with it. so there is that slight chance, early in the day, if enough moisture gets here, could start as an icy mix. but it's a really small chance. because you see, that's really where the cold air is going to be. this is pretty much going to be a rain event for us. that's what we're going to be watching. and that rain event is going to be continuing on and off through the day tomorrow. when it clears on friday afternoon, temperatures spike into the 50s. but eventually, over the weekend, cooler air will be returning to the region. so the forecast goes like this

on the waters. pretty light winds still into tomorrow. as that storm approaches. but then tomorrow night, into friday. small craft advisories go into effect. tonight's forecast, we go down to about 33 degrees. mostly cloudy skies. maybe some rain very late tonight into the early morning hours of tomorrow. that's why there is a concern with those temperatures so close to freezing that something may start out briefly icy. however, this is really a rainstorm that we'll be dealing with. going up to the 40s tomorrow afternoon. not the prettiest days of tomorrow. but it will be in the form of rain. and this will continue into friday bench it gets -- before it gets out of here. >> there are no good school days tomorrow. >> it's another form of a storm that bern will have to explain to us at one point. it may sound like science fiction but it's not. it's a storm on the sun. linds see mastas reports, it cause cause disruptions in air travel. >> reporter: it happened

manuel gallegus reports from state college with a tribute. >> reporter: friends and colleagues of joe paterno arrive for a private funeral on the penn state campus. a herself in -- hears in blue will lead them to the university. >> reporter: paterno was fired for not doing more, after his former defense coordinator was accused of sexually molesting a child on campus. >> since he lost his job, i've been grieving. >> reporter: kathy fletcher was one of the people who spent hours waiting in line for the viewing. >> i grew up around here. i kind of felt like joe paterno was like my father. >> reporter: once inside, people saw the man they called joe-paw. >> once you came here. it made you kind of change as a person and do things the right way. >> reporter: there will be a final celebration here on campus tomorrow, at the basketball arena. all 16,000 free tickets were gone within a few minutes.

>> reporter: university officials considered using the football stadium but couldn't get it ready in time. >> i didn't get tickets. it is on the big 10 networks, though. so i'll be watching with my roommates. >> reporter: this will conclude nearly a week of mourning celebrations for the man who gave his all to penn state. in state college, pennsylvania, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> paterno coached at penn state for 46 years before being fired for not telling authorities about alleged child sexual abuse by one of his coaches. a scandal involving mismatched graves. another major problem at our nation's military cemeteries. >> the problem is military investigators say they're now reviewing all military cemeteries to make sure their headstones are over the right plots. 115 headstones were found miss aligned. that meant they sat above the wrong grave.

the problem was uncovered after dozens of workers in san antonio found dozens of graves one marker over from where they are supposed to be. family members are often buried in the same plot. but since the markers were off, some were placed with strangers. >> last summer, arlington national cemetery came under fire after they found mismatched graves and missing records. the german man who once went by the name clark rockefeller will go on trial. he is accused of killing a california man in 2005. he kidnapped his daughter in boston. he was later arrested in baltimore. gerhartsreiter will be arraigned on the murder charge next month. park police in d.c. are iturning up the heat on the demonstrators who are camping

out in washington square. citations will be handed out to those who violate the ban. police have clashed with protestors several times. they began demonstrating months ago. in less than 24 hours, airlines will make a major change in the way they do business. the government is forcing airline companies to tell people what the tickets cost. >> reporter: you see prices that seem too good to be true. and often, they are. today is the last day those airlines can exclude most government taxes and fees in their advertised price for a flight. starting tomorrow, they have to disclose the entire price or face fines from the department of transportation. >> 7:15. that works perfectly. >> reporter: kate hani, founder of flyers rights.org pushed through the new legislation. this rule brings a lot more

transparency to airlines. it is necessary because airlines have implemented things that were separate taxes but weren't considered breaking the law. so now if they do it, it will be breaking the law. >> reporter: government taxes and fees can add as much as $60 to the price of the ticket. right now, airline ads can market the price for just $215. tomorrow, they'll have to tell you right up front, the real cost is $260. for an international flight, fees can be even greater. taxes and fees can push the flight. at 151, to $735. >> these are all things the airlines don't want us to know. they want to keep us in the dark because they make more money. >> well, that was mark strausman reporting. airline officials claim they are being singled out unfairly. saying virtually every other business advertises the prices of their products before taxes. in today's healthwatch,

a deadly end to a night of celebration in thailand. a fireworks display explodes during a lunar new year celebration. four people are dead and at least 20 homes are damaged. the cause of the accident is still under investigation. government officials are promising to pay homeowners for the damage. lawyers for a teen accused of fire bombing synagogues in new jersey want his trial moved out of town. the 19-year-old pled not guilty to attempted murder and hate- crime charges during a court appearance today. his attorneys say there has been too much publicity about the case to get their client a fair trial in that county. no one was hurt in the attacks. and the teen remains in jail, on $5 million bond. almost a year after she was attacked and sexually assaulted while on assignment in egypt, cbs correspondent laura logan

is once again opening up about her traumatic experience. jessica kartalija has more on what logan is saying about that night. >> do lo gan says member -- logan says memories of that horrible night still haunt her. last february, she was in tahrir tahrir square, covering the ousting of mubarak. she said a group of men surrounded her, groped her and tore her clothes off. a group of women finally came to her help and pulled her to safety. new evidence. three men are exonerated in three high-profile murders. and today, family members of the father of one murdered boy say he confessed to killing his son. april thomas reports from west memphis. >> he loved the boy scouts. he was so proud. >> pam hobbs is looking for

closure, after 20 years. she still doesn't know who killed her 8-year-old son, stevie branch. early on, there were suspicions that her ex-husband, terry hobbs, may have been involved. now, newly-released evidence, implicating terry hobbs, has pam hobbs with her own doubts about the man she once trusted. >> yes, i have doubts. i have questions. i'm scared. i'm fearful. >> reporter: since damian eckles, jesse, were set free last year after being convicted in the case, they vowed to find the real killers. last week, eckle's attorneys released statements from witnesses. members of terry's own family who say they heard him confess to the killing. >> they passed polygraph testing. and what would they accomplish in trying to do something like this, is my question, if they had not overheard this. >> reporter: still angry over how police and then prosecutors

handled the case from the start, pam hobs and her family turned over evidence they found to the defense attorneys. that evidence, knives that belonged to terry hobbs. among them, one that also belonged to 8-year-old stevie. >> and i do not -- i demand that the state take this seriously. justice has not prevailed for me. >> now, there are reports terry hobbs' dna was found on one of the victims's' shoes. a scary day for men in ohio. both men were working three stories up in cleveland when all of a sudden, their scaffolding collapsed. one of the men fell when the scaffolding broke while the other was left dangling on the side of the building. both men were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. in texas, heavy rains cause severe flooding, leading to a number of high-water rescues. a woman had to be saved in san antonio, after a car got trapped in the rushing water.

it was just one of several rescues made in morning. many roads in the area are still closed at this time. a bold robbery in a video store in florida, and it's all captured on surveillance video. ted scouten reports, the brazen burglar has hit the store more than once. >> incredible video, as we watch a 15-year-old literally drop into the game-time electronics store, early saturday morning, entering through an air duct. once inside, he rifles through drawers, shoots a loaded gun, and suddenly realizes he's trapped inside. >> this is filled with iphones and ipods. they made off with most of the stuff out here. playstation 3 that was on the counter. they took that, as well as the laptop. >> reporter: an officer is poking around the door because an alarm went off. when the cop doesn't see movement inside, he leaves. a little while later, we see the kid crawling away. but not for long. he returns with a body. the pair makes it back in.

beautiful sunset. >> the sun was out? >> it was out, almost all day long. a few clouds coming in. but that is going to -- actually, that's a precursor to some rain in the region. a little bit tomorrow. more tomorrow night. and more on friday morning before clearing out. so let's take a look at temperatures. it did get pretty pleasant today. 49. but yesterday was 59. normal high now is at 42. it just went up 1 degree today. by the way, we've reached the bottom. and we're now heading back up again, as far as averages of temperature is concern said. 44, 29. dew point, humidity 55%. east to southeast winds off the ocean. and the bay, around 9. much lighter all day long. barometer holding steady. we'll start to fall late tonight and tomorrow. 45 out at oakland. 41, ocean city. with a breeze off the ocean there. 48 in washington there. that's the warm spot in cumberland as well. at 48 degrees. locally, mid- to upper 40s. pretty pleasant afternoon.

all things considered for the last few days in january. but once again, the temperatures are just beginning to start increasing. the days are getting longer. the sun is getting higher in the sky in a couple of weeks. our normal highs will be back up in the mid and eventually the upper 40s. east winds now at 9. but most areas are very, very light, light winds. not a major impact. now, to the west and south, we've talked about this yesterday. look how juiced up it's gotten today. rain from missouri into texas. this was a big drought area this past summer. and actually, for a couple of years, been getting a lot of rain today. a little blue snow in wisconsin and minnesota. not that cold. this low is going to head out to our west. so for the most part, that's going to miss us. but we'll get a little overrunning warmer air. cloud cover right there. we'll see more clouds late tonight. maybe a little rain or drizzle in the morning. but the main rain probably won't come until late tomorrow night into friday. as that storm passes to the west, it will be dragging a front across the region.
