jessica buchanan and dane powell. pulled off by the elite members of the u.s. military. it was pulled off by the same team of navy seals that killed osama bin laden about two dozen members of the elite special forces unit parachuted into the somali desert from an air force plane while backup forces remained in the air. they then hiked about a mile and a half to the camp where the hostages were being held. as the seals closed in, shots were fired and nine suspected kidnappers were killed. two army choppers were called in and carried the seal team and the hostages to djibouti. >> i'm sure it was well-planned and timed. they used the element of surprise. >> president obama did not mention the rescue during his state of the union address. but as he arrived, he congratulated the defense secretary, leon panetta on the rescue. >> good job tonight. after his speech, the

president called jessica buchanan's father to tell him the good news. his daughter had been rescued. a senior administration official said the president decided monday to launch the raid after intelligence sources revealed buchanan's health was deteriorating. she and her danish colleague were kidnapped in october. they were working with an aid group when they were ab ducked. those who know buchanan say she fell in love with africa while a student in pennsylvania. news of the rescue came as a relief to students and faculty. >> she's a person of devotion, a person of resolve, a person of commitment. >> ever since we heard that she was kidnapped, we've been praying for her every single day. >> the obama administration will announce today increased funding for the military special forces unit. coming up on "cbs this morning," reaction to the rescue by jessica buchanan's father. we turn to politics. republican presidential candidates hold their second debate of the week in florida

tonight. newt gingrich and mitt romney have been taking shot at the president and each other for his part, the president is in the midst of a three-day five-stop campaign swing. he begins his day in nevada. terrell brown is in washington with more on all of that. good morning, terrell. >> betty, good morning to you. this campaign-style post state of the union tour will continue into tomorrow. he'll wrap up in michigan. meanwhile, newt gingrich and mitt romney lead the pack in florida. they stepped up their attacks against each other. they're also taking aim at the president. president obama appeared outside a sprawling intel plant in arizona to highlight the need for american manufacturing. >> the factory that's being built behind me is an example of an america that is within our reach. an america that attracts the next generation of good manufacturing jobs. >> he's on the road trying to build support for proposals he laid out in his state of union address. last night he arrived in las vegas where he focus on energy

innovation before heading to colorado. it's his plan to raise taxes on the rich that's drawing criticism from gop rivals. >> if he meant what he said, it would be a disaster of the first order. >> we've got a president detached from reality, detached from the people. >> newt gingrich and mitt romney are also taking aim at each other with the florida primary less than a week away, the polls show them in a tight race. he blasted the -- i think you have to live in a world of swiss bank accounts and cayman island accounts and automatic $20 million a year income with no work to have some fantasy this far from reality. >> romney later shot back saying gingrich himself has supported the concept. >> i recognize that it's tempting to come into an audience like this and pander to the audience. i think that's unbecoming of a presidential candidate. >> the two will have another chance to go at it tonight when they meet for the last gop debate before tuesday's primary.

on a visit to the space coast in florida, newt gingrich promised to establish a permanent base on the moon by 2020. he also said he favored the idea of expanding mars exploration. betty in. >> also interesting. terrell brown in washington for us. as we reported earlier, the president was in arizona and he got a rather con fron station al greeting from governor jan brewer. brewer and the president could be seen in a finger pointing conversation. the issue is arizona's controversial anti-immigration law. which the president opposes. brewer says the president was upset about a description in her book of a meeting they had at the white house. >> i felt a little bit threatened, if you will, in the attitude that he had. i was there to welcome him. >> brewer had handed the president a letter inviting him to discuss the immigration issue. in her boom, she says the president lectured her like a little kid in a classroom when

they met at the white house. >> bottom line is that he generally wants to talk about amnesty and i want to talk about securing our border. >> the white house says brewer inaccurately described the meeting. brewer says she would never be disrespectful to the president. a strong system that swept through texas and oklahoma threatens portions of the gulf coast this morning. damaging winds are the main concern but heavy thunderstorms and possible tornadoes cannot be ruled out in mississippi, louisiana and florida. now, that same storm system pounded houston and dallas yesterday with flood producing rain. rescue workers had to pull several stranded motorists from cars. the national weather service reports several tornadoes touched down near austin, texas. homes and businesses were damaged but there are no reports of injuries. new rules on airline fees dee stiend protect passengers take effect today. now, they require airlines to include all mandatory taxes and fees in their advertised prices.

passengers will be able to hold a reservation for 24 hours without payment or cancel during that period without penalty. baggage fees must be disclosed when you book a ticket. on the money watch, tim geithner predicts that he'll be replaced and california backs out of a mortgage settlement with the banks. ashley morrison is here in new york with the latest on that. good morning, ashley. >> good morning to you, betty. in overseas trading a mixed day. nikkei shed a fraction following disappointing earnings. and the hang seng gained more than 1.5% after an extended holiday. federal reserve chairman ben bernanke says record low interest rates probably won't go up until 2014. he made the comments during a news conference yesterday. keeping the rates near zero is a sign economic growth will remain weak. >> the promise of low interest rates sent stocks on wall street higher. the dow added 81 points and the nasdaq gained nearly 32.

the government official in charge of the bailout says taxpayers are still owed nearly $133 billion. in a report out this morning, the inspector general of the $700 wl billion rescue plan says some of it will never be repaid. the treasury department is trying to sell off stakes in more than 450 bailed out companies. meanwhile, treasury secretary timothy geithner does not expect to serve a second term. in an interview with bloomberg television, he said he does not believe he'll be asked to return if president obama wins reelection. geithner is the only remaining member of the president's original economic's team. we'll get more important economic data from the government today. the labor department releases the jobless claim numbers and the commerce department is out with the new home sales report. california is refusing to sign on to a massive settlement with the nation's biggest mortgage lenders over deceptive foreclosure practices.

the attorney general says agreeing to the deal would limit her ability to sue those banks. this week, bank of america, jpmorgan chase, wells fargo, citibank and allied financial agreed to a $25 billion sett settleme settlement. one of the largest in u.s. history. and indiana is a step closer to becoming the first right to work state in more than a decade. the state house of representatives approved a bill aimed at limiting the power of labor unions in the workplace. the bill is expected to pass the senate and be signed into law by governor mitch daniels. indiana would become the 23rd right to work state. making some changes in my home state of indiana. >> yeah. back home for you. ashley morrison here in new york. thank you, ashley. coming up on the morning news, thousands pay tribute to coach joe paterno ahead of today's memorial. plus, gabrielle giffords returns to congress to say farewell. you're watching the "cbs morning news." osec otc have asked yours truly to teach you about treating frequent heartburn.

two commercial buildings collapsed overnight after an explosion was reported in rio de janeiro brazil. a brazilian news agency says at least two people were killed. but local officials have not confirmed that. as many as 11 people may be missing. the cause of the blast is still unclear, but witnesses say the twin collapse felt like an earthquake. former penn state university football coach joe paterno has been laid to rest. and a final campus memorial service will be held for him today. thousands of mourners lined the streets as paterno's funeral procession passed yesterday. emotions were also on full display in washington, d.c. as the often divided house of representatives came together to bid farewell to gabrielle giffords. the arizona congresswoman resigned just over a year after she was shot in an assassination attempt. nancy cordes was there. >> we salute you, congresswoman gabby giffords.

[ applause ] >> 41-year-old gabby giffords steps down from congress on her own terms. walking gingerly to the front of the house chamber to personally hand her resignation letter to a clearly moved speaker boehner. her presence prompted wonder at how far she's come but also sadness about the mobility and speech she's still strugi struggling to regain after that mass shooting in tucson last year. >> i'm so proud of my friend and it will always be one of the great treasures of my life to have met gabby giffords and to have served with her in this body. >> gabby, we love you. we have missed you. >> i missed you too said giffords. [ applause ] >> she got a farewell embrace in the president before his state of the union address.

here's a look at the weather in some cities around the country. new york, afternoon rain. 46. going to be sunny in miami. 80 degrees will. chicago, afternoon sunshine, 41. dallas, mostly cloudy, 55. a sunny l.a. with 82 degrees. time now for a check of the national forecast. rain and thunderstorms will reach from the ohio valley to the southeast. severe storms and flooding are likely in the deep south. rain will spread into the northeast later turning to snow and sleet in new england. rain will ease in the pacific northwest but snow will fall in the mountains of idaho, montana and wyoming. southern california, though, will be sunny with gusty winds. in sports, housecleaning continues in indianapolis. baltimore ravens defense coordinator chuck pa began owe is head coach for the colts. his job, to revive the team that went 2-14 without injured quarterback peyton manning. now to the nba. the battle of los angeles.

kobe bryant hit a three-pointer early and led the lakers with 24 in the game. in the second period blake griffin drove to the basket for a two-hand dunk. a loose ball triggered a wrestling match in the third. lakers josh mcroberts was tossed in the fourth. lakers finally won it, 96-91. in dallas, there was plenty of bling on display as the mavericks got their nba championship rings. then with a sore knee being rested, they took on the timberwolves. kevin love led the way with 31 points, ten rebound. he also flattened a player to allow a ricky rubio layup. the final 105-90. college hoops and number 8 duke at maryland. a pre-game ceremony honored former terrapins coach gary williams whose name is inscribed on the court. in the game, maryland led into the second half, but the blue devil took over outscoring the

terps in the closing minutes. mason plumly had 23 points, including a jam late in the game. right there you see it. duke won it 74-61. in stillwater, oklahoma, second ranked missouri trailed by one at the half. oklahoma state's marquel brown got the home crowd going with a huge alley oop jam. take a look. all the way over the top and slam. cowboys freshman nash went a final charge with a three-pointer in a 27-point night. missouri lost its second game of the year, 79-72. when we return, the latest entry in the world's dumbest criminals. a robbery suspect with a itchy trigger finger.

community. this is his reply. >> i might have tacos when i go home. >> well, that outraged city and community leaders. the mayor then tried to backtrack. >> it was a stupid, dumb comment taken out of context. >> the four officers are charged with routinely injuring and intimidating latinos with false arrest. the fbi says "they behaved like bullies with badges." more charges are expected. a brazilian bank robber is nursing a wounded foot this morning after learning a hard lesson about loaded guns. it happened during a robbery caught on security cameras a few days ago in a small town in brazil. one robber with a gun in each hand should have been more careful. he shoots himself in the foot and then goes down. later the thieves made their escape with mr. two guns limping along behind them. i'm betty nguyen.
