and black shoes, the way joe- paw always looked on the field. >> today is a very special day in honoring a great man in joe paterno. >> reporter: paterno's children will address the crowd of more than 12,000. and a friend from each decade of paterno's coaching career will remember him. kenny jackson was an all- american at penn state. >> we got to talk about our teacher, coach paterno. we are going to show you how much we love you. >> reporter: paterno's death at age 85, came less than three months after his stunning dismissal as head coach. the charges against his former assistant, have tarred his legacy. but paterno is being remembered for his generosity and commitment to his family. wednesday, thousands line the streets to wave solemnly as his funeral procession passed by. now, the community says a final goodbye. in state college, pennsylvania, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news.

>> nike founder and chairman phil knight got a standing ovation at the memorial for defending the late coach's response to an accusation of child sex abuse against a former assistant. impassioned plea. the family convicted of killing her coworker is asking a judge to give her a chance to be free one day. denise is in the newsroom with more on the lulu lemon murder case. >> well, kai, britney norwood will be sentenced tomorrow for beating jayna murray to death. both prosecutors agree that life in prison without the possibility of parole is the appropriate sentence. norwood beat murray hundreds of times inside the lulu lemon store. then she concocted a story about masked men. police say she has shown no remorse. >> under maryland law, a prisoner without parole cannot

be considered for release until 25 years has been served. maryland police say 25-year- old tyrese jordan of elkton. he was followed at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. police say jordan tried to ram his vehicle into several cruisers. that chase went into delaware then back into cecil county. a spike strip stopped jordan and he was arrested. he faces several charges. no one was hurt. surprising move. a man accused of trying to blow up a local recruiting center changes his plea in court. mike hellgren explains the guilty plea as part of the government. >> reporter: the bold plot captured national attention. martinez said he wanted to wage jihad against the government. earlier this month, he pleaded guilty. but that all changed in court this morning. >> reporter: antonio martinez spent weeks before making the decision to change his plea to guilty this morning, admitting

he attempted to use a weapon of mass destruction, to blow up the armed services in catonsville in 2010. it's a plot the government derailed with the help of an informant, who noticed an alarming post on martinez's facebook page. >> i think the work the fbi did is about as good as it gets. gave him every opportunity to withdraw, he intended, in fract, to kill people. he intended to do damage. and he admitted that today. >> he went ahead on his own, after it was presented to him, drove the car, parked the vehicle and went to the vantage point with a confidential source so he could see the event happen when he actually activated the bomb with the device that was provided to him. >> reporter: the government went by martinez, who said it was his dream to wage a holy war against the united states. his prison sentence calls for 25 years. >> reporter: the actual sentence could change. it will be up to a judge.

>> imented to get comment from you about the sentence today. >> reporter: martinez's attorneys declined to comment. but martinez is 22 and converted to islam not long before the government sting that led to his arrest. >> i would like to especially acknowledge the muslim community in reaching out to us and helping us identify the threat early on. >> reporter: the maximum sentence for this crime is life in prison. martinez will be sentenced in april. at the federal courthouse, in downtown baltimore, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> all new at 5:00, the recordings that led to the plea. what martinez said about waging a holy war. no trial from an exmarine charged with firing shots at the pentagon. today, he pled guilty in court. jessica kartalija has more on the plea deal reached. >> reporter: 24-year-old jonathan malacko is charged with firing shots at buildings

including the pentagon. he was arrested in june in arlington national cemetery. he was carrying a backpack, filled with explosive materials and papers, referring to jihad and bin laden. it appeared he was planning to spray paint tombstones. his guilty plea means he will serve 25 years in prison. gop presidential candidates are gearing up for the final debate before the florida primary. danielle nottingham reports for wjz. immigration and the economy are hot-button issues. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: newt gingrich is reaching out to voters in florida, with a new round of attacks on mitt romney. >> i think every american should be angry. how can somebody run a campaign this dishonest and think he's going to have any credibility running for president? >> reporter: gingrich tried to connect romney to florida's home foreclosure crisis. pointing out that romney owned stock in goldman sack.

-- goldman sachs. >> i think romney owes every american an explanation. >> reporter: gingrich is trying to cast himself as a citizen with big ideas who will shake things up if he's elected president. >> reporter: it's working with crowds at his rallies. >> he has conviction. he has fire in the belly. and that's what we need. >> reporter: while iming rich -- gingrich has pulled even with romney in florida, polls also show his momentum may be slowing. and he faces criticism for his radio ad, calling romney the most anti-immigration candidate. today, romney kept his attacks focused on obama. he pointed to a 100-year-old printing business forced to close its doors this month. >> reporter: ron paul and rick

santorum will be at the debate tonight. in jacksonville, florida, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> during monday's debate in tampa, the moderator asked the cloud to refrain from clapping or booing. brainstorming. today, governor martin o'malley is in new york. o'malley is attending a government association meeting. he's meeting with bloomberg to discuss his proposal to legalize same-sex marriage. a bill similar to o'malley's, last year. the budget proposal. the plan would charge a 70% tax at the wholesale level. the bill includes cigars, rolling papers and smokeless tobacco. businesses say this will send back into other states. hurting retailers. no signs of the sun today.

the clouds have completely taken over. here's a live look outside. rain is moving into maryland. we're expecting to get it tonight. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk has updated numbers. >> and late tonight, maybe a rare january thundershower, a thunderstorm in some spots with gusty winds. take a look at radar for the most part. with all the rain to the north and northwest. a little bit of rain now. carroll county and frederick county. none of it is really heavy. further west, around hancock and williamsport and mawginsville. and light shower activity. one heavier echo south. looks like we'll have to wait quite a ways this evening. but overnight, there will be a front approaching us from the south. had some heavier showers with it. take a look at this little graphic here to the west of us. it will clearut on. during the morning-- clear out. during the morning that's when we have a chance of a shower or thundershower. it will be gusting winds with

newly-released video shows emergency crews as they arrive at the scene of a plane crash

in washington state. that plane went down, right after taking off in boeing field. flames engulfed the aircraft. luckily, the two people inside made it out without being hurt. crews trained how to get to the crash scene in three minutes. they're using the video to critique their performance. a lesson for parents. what to do if your child is scaltded -- scalded by boiling hot water. doctors say they see more young burn patients than you might believe. this little girl suffered second and third-degree burns when boiling water fell in her lap. her mother got ice water and kept pouring it onto her legs. doctors say cooling the burn down is the most important thing. johns hopkins is taking on a brand-new look. it is not just remodeling. it is a modern hospital from the ground up. alex demetrick reports a new approach to medicine. >> reporter: ever wonder what a billion dollars can build. alt johns hopkins, it's two

brand-new towers. >> the two towers you see today are the new face of the johns hopkins hospital. >> reporter: that includes a length of a football field. covered more than a fraction of 1 1/2 million square feet that will replace hopkins' current hospital. which was -- >> developed after the civil war. and many of the layouts were reminiscent of civil hospitals. but today, we need a new design. >> reporter: which includes 560 rooms, all of them private, for both adults and children. including intensive care. all rooms, big enough to allow a family member to stay with a patient. >> quiet is essential for healing. the other thing we've learned is the presence of family is critically important. >> reporter: hopkins has adopted a family-centered approach, after talking with family. >> i sat in there for five months. that room and that hospital was our home for 5 months. >> we know children do better when they have their families at their bedside. there will be no visiting hours in this children's center. >> reporter: but there will be

[ stock bells ringing ] the markets trailed off in the afternoon. the dow is down 22. the s&p is off 8. nasdaq down 13. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. the dow jones industrial averages, within striking distance of its highest close since before the 2008 financial crisis. traderless appear less worried about spillover from the european debt crisis situation. and jobs and manufacturing have

been consistently strong. it's official. new figures show 2011 was the worst on the record for the housing market. the median sale price fell to a little under $210,000. but there are signs the depressed housing market is starting to recover. sales of previously-owned homes are rising. and builders are slightly more confident. and the number of people applying for first-time unemployment benefits rose last week by 21,000. but the increase comes after claims drop to a four-year low just two weeks ago. analysts say the overall trend still suggests, the labor market is slowly improving. and netflix is gaining favor with customers again. video subscription service added customers from october to december. netflix is recovering from a subscriber backlash last year when it raised money to 60%. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous.

across southern pennsylvania. right now, york county, adams county. take a look at that. up to the north, there you see it moving away from us. a little stuff here in west virginia and portions of frederick and carroll county. but that even looks like it's going to pass to the west of the baltimore, washington area. until later tonight, when there's another batch of rain south and west of us. that will move in. and in addition to that, there may each be -- may even be a thunderstorm later tonight. some of that activity down south will move into our region. and it's going to get even warmer tonight. tonight, temperatures probably in the mid-50s by the time you get up in the morning. may you get up to 60 briefly. right now, just jumped up to 50, even though we have an east/northeast wind at 8. which is kind of rare. 29.99 the barometer is beginning to fall right now. south of us, in the 50s all day long. 38, stuck in the valley. a little chilly there in hagerstown. 39, rain in cumberland. 45 in oakland. up at 2500 feet, it's even

warmer. 49 in ocean city. and virginia, temperatures in the 60s in the carolinas today in the 70s. some of that warm air is moving into our region with a front across the region. late tonight, means temperatures may drop a little bit. and tomorrow, we get up in the 50s early in the morning. maybe between 1:00 or 6:00 and 7:00 in the morning. showers, maybe even a gusty thunderstorm, with strong, gusty winds in a few spots. so it will feel like a spring nd of day at least for a while. winds coming out of the east/northeast. but they will begin to shift. you see from maryland southward, not much going on at all. warm conditions with a lot of sunshine. to the southwest of us, this is where the shower activity that had moved through texas had moved over in the south right now. it's broken up somewhat. but there's still thundershower with it. some of that rain moving into our region overnight. there was a little sleet, a little freezing rain. and even a little snow continuing across new york state. just cold enough there, where that snow is happening.

hostage in somalia. american jessica buchanan is one step closer to home at a military base in italy, recovering as her father talks about how she's doing. >> reporter: early wednesday morning, two teams of navy seals, under the cover of darkness, parachuted out of an air force c130 transport plane to the somallian city of cadado. from there, they hiked nearly two miles to an encampment, where nine pirates were killed. the seal teams suffered no injuries. army pilots then picked them up and flew them safely to the african country of jabeauty. >> the fact that they were able to get in and get out and not get anyone killed is a tribute to how good these guys are. >> reporter: john spoke to his daughter tuesday night. "she is emotional, but she's good. she's got some health issues,

not life-threatening. she will be fine. she said, daddy, i love you, and i'll be fine ." >> reporter: buchanan was kidnapped with paul hogan fisted. they reached out to the family through the aid organization. the families used private negotiators who worked in tandem with u.s. officials to try to get their release. buchanan said the fbi was looking over our shoulder the whole time. they were kind, efficient. they were on top of everything. >> reporter: news that buchanan's health had gotten worse moved the mission. >> when he got word he got seal team 6, the same team that killed osama bin laden. the pentagon says it plans to slash the number of combad brigades from 45 to 32, increasing the size of each

brigade. it is part of a broad restructuring, aimed at cutting costs and service. the plan will unfold over several years. specialty units, such as army special operations, will not be affected. you've heard it said, a picture is worth a thousand words. and that is certainly true about a photo of president obama and arizona's republican governor. kai jackson is in the newsroom with more on this. >> reporter: the photo was taken on the tarmac of the phoenix airport. take a look. arizona governor jan brewer got right to the point in a heated exchange with obama. brewer says she wasn't being hostile or disrespectful. the president and the governor have a history of strained relations. she said in her book that president obama was patronizing during a meeting. >> thank you, kai. republicans running to replace

obama in november are in florida, taking aim at each other. randall pinkston has the latest now for wjz from the white house. >> reporter: newt gingrich got the party going at a tea party meeting in florida. >> this is a campaign for the very nature of the republican party. >> reporter: he and mitt romney are battling the state votes. 20% of florida voters are hispanic, making immigration a key issue. gingrich is looking at tougher laws. >> i think you have to live in a world of swiss bank accounts and cayman island accounts and automatic $20 million a year income with no work to have some fantasy this far from reality. >> reporter: but romney points out that gingrich is on the record as supporting the same idea. >> i realize that it is tempting to come to an audience like this and to pander to the audience. i think that's unbecoming a

president. >> reporter: first lady michelle obama is also in florida, raising cash to help her husband's campaign. he's courting voters in nevada and colorado. >> reporter: the president arrived in las vegas last night. he's in the middle of a three- day, five-state swing, to lay out what he gave in his state of the union address. he wants to make bigger investments in clean energy. and he's expected to announce new leases for oil and gas companies to expand drilling off the coast. at the white house, wjz eyewitness news. >> meanwhile, preparations are under way here in maryland for a visit from the president. president obama is expected to visit house democrats at a conference in cambridge tomorrow. we will have much more on this story at 5:00 and 6:00. kennedy cousin michael skakel is asking for a lesser sentence for the murder of his

cousin in 1995. he was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for killing 15-year- old martha moxley. he is now asking the court to review the sentence. his attorney said it was too harsh, especially because skakel was 15 at the time of the crime. skakel maintains his innocence. a ruling on the review could take months. a teenager pleads guilty to a murder at a glen burnie pizza shop. vincent bunker pled guilty to the first-degree misdemeanor. flores was gunned down in november 2010. three other teenagers are charged in his killing. bunker is expected to be sentenced in april. a new study shows drinking a certain type of tea may help with your blood pressure. mary bubala is live now with more on this study. >> reporter: denise, if you need to lower your blood pressure, you may want to start drinking black tea. researchers find those who drink three cups of black tea a day, are able to lower their blood pressure.

weather. >> rain, not snow, not ice. and mild temperatures once again. there's a little bit of rain, not too far from the city now. north and west of us, there you see it. across carroll and northern sections of baltimore county. a little to the west of owings mill. it is not heavy but moving to the west of the city. and more activities. garrett county getting heavier showers right near cumberland, until late tonight. don't expect to see a lot of rain in the baltimore region. but overnight, there will be another batch of rain. and guess what. even a rare, after midnight, maybe a thunderstorm, with this front coming through late tonight and early in the morning. yes, thunder and lightning. maybe brief, gusty winds. and a downpour with that front. and then we'll look for sunshine and mild temps and nice breeze coming in the afternoon to quickly dry things out. tomorrow, for the most part, it's going to feel like an april kind of day. denise? >> wow. thank you, bob. let's check on the roads now with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> reporter: hi, denise. hi, everyone. the beltway continues to slow down pretty much all the way

a security scare for australian minister julian gillard on off the australia day. -- australia day. gillard clung to her bodyguard this afternoon as she was dragged away by 200 angry aboriginal protestors. gillard and another leader were inside for a ceremony. police safely led the politicians from the building. compensation may be on the way for the passengers who survived the costa concordia cruise ship disaster in italy. kai has more on this. >> officials from the parent company are meeting with consumer activists to work out a deal. the deal would be for 3200 passengers who were not hurt
