deadly crash. four people are dead after a horrific head-on collision. tonight, the investigation into what went wrong. good evening. i'm andrea fujii. that accident happened early this morning on route 50 in anne arundel county. wjz is live at state police headquarters. weijia jiang tells us how the chaotic scene all unfolded. weijia? >> reporter: andrea, there are still several unanswered questions about this accident. but tonight, we can tell you, police say it all happened because a car was traveling in the wrong direction on the highway. this road appears to be ordinary. but just hours before, around 3:30 a.m. saturday -- >> it was a horrific morning. >> reporter: four people lost their lives on route 50 east at maryland 424 in davidsonville. >> this vehicle that was traveling westbound, eastbound route 50, carrying three

passengers, struck head-on, a single-passenger vehicle. >> reporter: police identified the three people inside this same car as 18-year-olds briana franco and intrakary rhodes and 19-- zachary rhodes and 19-year- old britney walker. just moments before, police received a call that a driver was going the wrong way on 50. but before police arrived, it had already crashed, causing a fire. three people were pronounced dead on the scene. another en route to the hospital. eastbound 50 was shut down for four hours. investigators trying to figure out when the chaos began. >> there was a vehicle that may have been traveling in the wrong direction on 97. at this point, that's part of the investigation. we're not sure if that's the same vehicle that, of course, ended up in this crash. >> reporter: one of men questions. police -- many questions. police are also trying to answer if alcohol, drugs or speed played a role in this tragedy. >> reporter: at this point, police have not released the name of the fourth victim. that victim was the lone occupant in the car going in

that direction on route 50. reporting live tonight, state police headquarters, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> okay. thank you, weijia. another crash in anne arundel county to tell you about. it claims the life of a man who founded the popular online news site. police say 32-year-old brian mcdev on the -- mcdevit was driving on fort smallwood road when he lost control and crashed into another car. he was pronounced dead at the scene. he helped create the facebook page, anne arundel county breaking news and events. a teen sent to the hospital. witnesses say nearly 75 students stood and watched as two teens fought at broadneck high school. by the time police arrived, an 18-year-old student was having a seizure. he is now in shock trauma, in serious condition. police haven't filed charges yet against the 15-year-old involved in the fight. prince george's county police are able to bring up a dead body, discovered in a well.

the body was found in the well behind an unoccupied home in fort washington wednesday. authorities had been excavating the areas around the well over the last few days. police don't know how long the body has been there or who it is. but there is speculation that it may be a missing activist from northern virginia. we're in the final weekend of campaigning before the florida republican primary. front runners mitt romney and newt gingrich are stepping up their attacks in a last-ditch effort to sway voters. here's danielle nottingham reporting for wjz from orlando. >> reporter: mitt romney brought star power with him to the stage in pensacola, florida. he's campaigning with actor jon voight and gop heavyweights like senator john mccain. the former massachusetts governor is attacking newt gingrich on the campaign trail. he's now questioning how effective gingrich would be as president, saying he already

failed as speaker of the house. >> he was fined for ethics violations. he ultimately had to resign in disgrace. he can't rewrite history. >> reporter: gingrich says he's the strongest candidate to take on the president and florida is a key state to make that happen. >> if we win florida, i will be the nominee, with your help. >> reporter: but gingrich needs to gain some momentum. the latest survey shows romney with a 9-point lead. the former speaker of the house was in orlando, courting hispanic voters, hoping they can help close the gap. >> i like nute. i think they have experience. he has strategies in place. i think that will help the economy, help unemployment. >> reporter: some have a very clear idea of what they want a candidate to represent. >> they want a quality of life, they want jobs, opportunity. >> reporter: the gop hopefuls have three more days to make an impression on florida voters.

>> and the latest polls show ron paul and rick santorum at the back of the pack in florida. paul chose not to campaign there and is in maine tonight. while santorum is expected back in the sunshine state later this weekend. another gorgeous day today. it didn't feel like winter at all. but temperatures are dropping as we move into the evening. a live look outside right now. starting to get pretty chilly. but it's gorgeous. very clear outside. meteorologist bernadette woods is live with more on what we can expect for the rest of the weekend. hi, bern. >> hello, andrea. and welcome to the weekend once again. this is what we have going on. i want to show you live doppler radar. there's a front passing through right now. and a sprinkle is possible with this front as it makes its way across the state in the next couple of hours. switch it over to the satellite. you get a little better perspective. it's pretty dry as it's making its way through. and as far as temperatures go, it got very warm ahead of this front. it is cooling down behind the front.

down to 36 now in oakland. and there's slightly cooler air coming our way. but we're still way above average. we'll have the forecast coming up. >> thanks, bern. rough seas off the coast of italy forced a delay in the operation to remove half a million gallons of fuel from a crippled cruise ship. officials say pumping operations on the costa concordia may not begin for a week. meanwhile, crews recovered a 17th body today. and survivors of the wreck are reacting to the offer of $14,000 in compensation from the cruise line. >> i'm very hurt about it, that oh, this is it. like now you're going to slam and put a price tag on us? >> the captain of the ship remains under house arrest, after allegedly straying off course and abandoning ship. more than a dozen people are still missing. former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky asks for permission to see his grandchildren. sandusky is charged with

sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year span. his house arrest currently prohibits him from having contact with anyone under age 18. a judge will now decide whether to amend the terms of his house arrest to allow him to contact the 11 grandchildren if they're accompanied by a parent. another scare for orioles legend brooks robinson. the baltimore sun reports robinson fell during a charity event last night in florida. the 74-year-old was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but he is expected to be fine. robinson has battled cancer and several other health problems in recent years. every two seconds, someone in america will need a blood transfusion. and as mike schuh reports, a number of donors answered the call today at a blood drive in timonium, sponsored by wjz. >> they're preparing to collect something so precious it can only be made by the human body. >> that's why your tag line is this.

traces of blood are discovered in the home of a missing baby in maine. investigators are analyzing the blood that was found in the basement of missing infant ala reynolds' house. the blood is one of hundreds of pieces of potential evidence removed from the home. the 20-month-old was reported missing by her father, six weeks ago surveillance video catches protestors storming the syrian embassy in cairo. dozens of people smashed windows and destroyed photos of president alicear bishad. over 5,000 people have been killed over 10 months of protests against the syrian president. the u.n. is set to discuss an arab peace plan, aimed at ending the crisis next week. rhythm and blues singer, etta james is remembered at a

funeral service today in los angeles. ♪ [ music ] the service highlighted james' vocal callent and her ability to break down racial and cultural barriers. the reverend opened his eulogy by reading a statement from president obama, who danced with the first lady to james' well known song, "at last." >> she was just a legend that was unbelievable. my mother, i remember growing up, used to play ettajames. and i never dreamed that i would be doing the eulogy at her services. but she was a symbol of one who bridged american music. >> james died at the age of 73, after battling leukemia and other ailments. well, over 10 feet of heavy

snow is piling up in central japan. the snowfall stranded older people, trapping them in their houses. volunteers were called in by the city's social welfare council to help remove it from the fronts of homes, belonging to the elderly. look at all of that. about 20 volunteers helped shovel them out. my goodness. >> that is some serious snow. >> nothing even close to that happening here. >> no. thank goodness. >> not even an entire season. we only have 1 1/2 inches on the year. that's it. >> oh, my goodness. >> and that's way below normal. >> and temperatures way above normal. take a look at where we sit right now. even with a cold front going through, it is still 47 degrees outside. our average is 42. and we're already on the way back down from today's high, in the 50s. now, of course, we do have some changes since it is the end of january. and we will have that forecast coming up after this break. stay with us. ,,,,

loving it. feeling like spring today. but getting pretty -- getting pretty chilly tonight, though. >> she was just saying, i'm loving this winter. we've gotten so many e-mails. so many people love it. they say we finally deserve it after the last couple of years. other people are like, where is the snow? at least one good snowstorm. in the forecast, we don't really have one. but winter is not over yet. we're still not into february. even though the five-day takes us into february. it's crazy. >> i know. there's a cold front going through right now. there are a couple of sprinkles on the way with this front. thing it's going to do is knock down temperatures and knock up the winds. look at that. winds turning around to the west behind it. and they are really starting to increase. you can see it is going to bring in cooler air. it's 47 now in baltimore. down to 36 in oakland. still 50s in d.c. and we did get into the 50s this afternoon. 53 degrees for our high today. the average is 42 degrees.

we're way above that average. we're still going to be above this average for most of this forecast here. so here's the front that we're dealing with right now. there's just not a whole lot to it. it gets out of here. there's another one behind it. this also does not have a whole lot to it. it's going to come through the day tomorrow and into tomorrow. again, the chance for a couple of sprinkles. that's about it. and temperatures will continue to fluctuate with that front coming through. here's the first one. second front comes through tomorrow night. a little break monday before another round of warm air comes in. those temperatures will go way above average once again. now, we put this altogether in an overall perspective. and the coldest of air is really locked up way to the negotiate. even though we cool down occasionally in rounds. we've had a couple of cold snaps. they've only been about a day or so. so the warm air generally is going to continue, as that cold air really gets locked up in canada. winds will be turning around to the southwest. and we're looking at small craft advisories in effect tonight and then again tomorrow, with the winds picking up behind this front

and another approaching. tonight, going down to 30 degrees. there could be a brief shower. that's about it. tomorrow, we're going up to 49 for a high with a mixture of sunshine and clouds. and take a look at the next five days around here. we're still way above average. even though we go down to 45 degrees with a front coming through. that's all part of a warm front. then we're back up to 62 degrees. 64 on wednesday, with the chance for a few showers. that's another cold front, which will knock down temperatures, 64 for our high on thursday. way above that 42 average. andrea? >> 62 at the beginning of february. unbelievable. love it. >> hot. i'd say. like the terps. for a while today, before they went cold and had to hang on for dear life. but they won. and we'll show you the good news. and we'll tell you about it, too, just as soon as we get back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
