mass kayio. >> tonight the growing death toll and the causes of the massive pileup. >> here is what people are talking about. >> federal investigators are on the scene of an horrific series of crashes along a florida highway. at least 10 people are are killed. we have more on the mess and what may have caused it. >> reporter: this disaster scene ran for one mile, the burned out shells of 19 vehicles, including 7 tract arer trailers. in zero visibility conditions, a combination of smoke and fog, drivers headed into a multicar pileup. >> it went from crystal clear visibility to nothing in 50 feet. >> reporter: visibility was so poor that when rescuers first arrived on the scene, they could locate victims only by listening for moneys and

screams. rescuers used machinery to pry victims from vehicles. >> was a very frightening situation to be out there on i- 75 in the midst of that traffic, hearing crashes, hearing explosions, hearing people scream. >> there are many unanswered questions, including whether the accident could have been avoided. the smoke was from a nearby brush fire, and that fire may have been set intentionally. visibility was so bad officials had closed the highway for a time, but then decided to reopen it. >> the visibility was good, we felt like it was safe for traffic. we opened the roadway, and i don't know the exact time period, but sometime after that ask s when we had these series of checks. >> accident investigators will have to determine what caused the first crash that set off the deadly chain reaction, and also look at why the road was

reopened during such dangerous conditions. >> 18 people remain hospitalized with injuries. less than 24 hours before the republican primary. romney has the lead in the polls, but gingrich thinks the next 24 hours will make a big difference. romney has been running attack ads throughout the state. much more coming up at 4:30. well, the deadline has come and gone for occupy washington protesters to leave their campsite, but the standoff is not over. adam? >> the dead line was set for noon for protesters to remove their tents and their gear. occupy protesters in washington d.c. have been able to stay in the parks since october. that has upset some city official has to are concerned about trash and health issues, along with a general bad

appearance for tourists. a strict no camping rule is how being enforced. some, though, are promising to stay even whether it means arrest. this person here you're about to see in this video became visibly upset. the police officers say they had to take out a taser, and there you can see they fire the weapon at the individual, eventually taking him into custody. officials are hoping to avoid any more violence if they are forced to remove the protesters. in a string of occupy demonstrations across the united states since september, protesters have targeted the nation's growing income backed corporate greed and what they see as an unfair tax structure favoring the richest one percent of americans. a kidly wrong way -- a deadly wrongway crash, for people killed. here is the latest.

>> reporter: police the fourth victim was driving the right way when he was hit head-on. it was 3:30 saturday morning when police say a car was going west in the eastbound lanes of route 50 in davidsonville, striking a car going east. was a head-on collision that ended in a fire. killed in the car going the rightway was 55-year-old terry davis. in the other car were 18-year- old brianna franco, and zachary rose, and britney walker. norman walker tells wjz it was his granddaughter britney who was behind the wheel of the car going the wrong way. >> my wife told her to be careful, and she said she would. so i don't know if alcohol- related or not. i just don't know. >> reporter: police haven't determined if she was the one behind the wheel, or if alcohol played a role in the crash. >> i would just hold her.

tell her i love her. >> mr. walker says his granddaughter told him she was going to a party with friendation bout 11:00, and never came home. >> wjz just received a call to emergency dispatchers right after the crash. hear what they revealed coming up new at 5:00 and 6:00. a maryland man is killed in a small plane crash in nearby pennsylvania. alex? >> well, the small plane went down just short is of the runway at york airport. doug has helms was identified as -- douglas helms was identified as the victim. his single engine piper crash in a cornfield. was the second fatal air crash near the airport in a little more than a month.

the ntsb is on the scene investigating. the baltimore grand prix may be back on track. one of several groups vying to run the event in 2012 submits a detailed plan to baltimore officials. it could soon cost more to fill up. the governor plans to introduce legislation calls for a sales tack on gasoline. the 6% sale tax would add approximately 21 cents to the price per gallon over three years. he announced his plan during an interview. there will a cap in gas prices suddenly strike. he chose that over raising the traditional gas tax, which calculate this tax on a per gallon basis. >> well, we are in for another warmup. a live look outside right now. the sun is still out. just a beautiful blue sky. can't even see barely a cloud

out there. wjz has weather and traffic together. bernadette woods is up here with the latest numbers. >> what a string of days we've had, and they are going to get even warmer. nothing going on immediately in our area. however, not that far away, just off to our northwest, we will get some clouds from it, but that's about it. look at the temperatures right now. 45 degrees in baltimore. around the state, we are still above average. it's 36 degrees in oakland. all of those are four to five degrees above average, and we are going up from here. we are going into the 60s the next couple of days pep we'll have your forecast coming up. let's check on the roads. >> we have a couple of delays there, especially around the beltway. if you're traveling on the north side of the interloop, some slowing there. on the outer loop, you'll also see a slowdown there from york

a woman is dead after her car plows into a house in arizona with a toddler in the back seat. this is the scene in tempe. police say the 30-year-old woman may have slammed into the house on purpose. her 18-month-old son was

unsafely strapped into his car seat. he suffered just minor injuries the only person in the home was not hurt. >> a dramatic rescue in texas is caught on tape. take a look at the video. police say two women got lost and accidentally drove into lake ray hubbard near dallas. a county sheriff pulled up, and quickly dove into the water. he was able to get those women out pretty safely. >> more than a dozen teenagers from the same western new york school are suffering from a bizarre illness, physical twitches they can't control. doctors say it's psychological, but parents think it may be something else. we have more on the visitry illness. >> reporter: in a small town in00 state new york, a group of local high school girls are are making international hid lines for what many call a medical history. one mother graduate brought her daughter to the hospital when

she started involuntary picking. since then, the numbers have grown to 15, and allle of them, except one, are girls. over the weekend, the media craze surrounding the mystery grew when famous environmental activist erin brockovich sent one of her investigator to look for possible environmental causes. the team tested local ground water samples for chemicals they believe may be left over from a 1970 train derailment that spilled thousands of gallons of industrial solvent, but both school and state health officials had already,ed a three-month investigation that determined no agent could have caused the ticks. doctors have determined the girls have a stress induced conversion disorder that starts as a mental or emotional crisis, a scary or stressful incident of some kind, and converts to a physical problem.

but some parents refuse to accept the causes or purely psychological. >> even if it was conversion disorder and that was the symptoms of it, we don't know what caused it. >> reporter: in their mind, the small town medical mystery is still very much unsolved. michelle miller, new york. the environmental team working with activist erin brockovich was forced off the high school property over the weekend. >> a sluggish start to the week on wall street. the markets have been down since the opening bell. here is look at the closing numbers. let's go to new york right now, where electionis has tonight's -- lexis has tonight's money watch update. >> reporter: the government reports that consumer spending was flat last month. economists say the report indicates people are saving

how beautiful is that? >> it's looking pretty nice out there. was a beautiful day after a beautiful weekend, and if you like the warm weather, we have even warmer weather moving our direction. before we get to that, though, there was a cold front that moved through last night, had a burst of snow with it. so if you were sleeping, didn't see it, there was a quick burst of snow coming out of the sky, but it moved through pretty quickly. the westerly wind has cooled down temperatures somewhat from where we were over the weekend. right now it is in the 30 nhl the mountains. -- 30s in the mountains. take a look at what's not that far away.

down to the southwest, you see a lot of 60s right now, and then this sharp line right in here. while that indicates a warm front, and that warm front is going to clear us tonight into tomorrow, and bring those 60 nhl our direction. starting tomorrow afternoon, we will top out in the 60s. here is how it comes together. we have the warm front right in here, that's going to pass by with some clouds tonight into tomorrow, but there's just not a lot of moisture along that warm front. that gets out of here, and when it does, sunshine breaks out again tomorrow. we bump up those temperatures into the 60s, and more clouds come in on wednesday with the cold front part of the storm. once this cold front clears, the temperatures will take a hit. before we get to that, temperatures will be 20 degrees above average. so our forecast looks like this, on the waters, not a whole lot going on right now. a small craft advisory tonight. those winds kicking up a little

weeks after the costa concordia hit a reef. crew working to collect tons of ship debris in the water in part of the protected area for dolphins and whales. >> 17 bodies have been recovered, while 16 remain technically missing. a group of united nations inspectors in iran looking at the nation's nuclear facilities. iran insists it's just for power, but the fear is that they are building nuclear bombs. >> reporter: u.n. inspectors are in iran, and are optimystic that their visit will help ease tensions. >> we're looking forward to start of a dialogue. >> reporter: about but iran initself is it has right to develop nuclear energy. they carried posters with photos of nuclear scientists

53-year-old listenwood lenny harris from alexandria, have a. his body was found thursday after an anonymous caller tipped off the police to its location, the bottom of a 20- foot well. police say he is the vick inof a homicide. friends say he was a well respected activist. much more from police on the investigation coming up new at 5:00. baltimore police are looking to identify the body of a person found floating in the patapsco river in south baltimore. no word how the person died. and a baltimore county family is looking for help to find the dog that bit a family member. this woman was bitten on the arm by a large black pit bull friday evening. it happened on liberty road. the woman was treated for her injuries, but the family wants to find the dog in case it has rainies and to prevent any other attacks. >> well, some cooler or

seasonal winter weather is settling in. plenty of sun on this monday, but don't let it fool you. you will need a jacket if you go out. here is a look at the updated numbers. >> by tomorrow afternoon, might want to take that jacket off, because it's going to get very mild the next two or three days, believe it or not. take a look at radar. there are some showers and rain and snow well up to our north, but this warm front through ohio will be passing across our region late tonight and tomorrow. behind it, temperatures are going to jump 10 to 15 degrees over where they are right now, probably into the low 60s. right now we're in the mid-40s, still above average. our average high is 42. really school spot out there in oakland, 34. let's check on the roads

her an outcast in her village. >> it can become quite deforming, can produce hemorrhages and a lot of additional problems besides the cosmetic aspect. >> reporter: the doctor heard sammy's story and arranged for the little girl to come to the states to undergo a cutting edge treatment. her family couldn't make the trip, so she is stays wig beverly, a nurse -- staying with beverly, a nurse. >> she is a challenge, but you get so much back from these children. >> reporter: sammy will be going back to ethiopia soon to show her family her remarkable transformation. her foster mom says she already sees a big difference in sammy's personality. >> when we went to the playground, before she had her surgery, she would just stand and watch the kids and cover

sandra yi reports for wjz police. >> reporter: clear skies and fresh snow drew three friends to utah's back country. the conditions were deceptive live cage russ. >> you can get on some slopes anden good to go, whereas others all you need to do is find a weak spot in the snow pack and you're staring down the barrel of a very dangerous avalanche. >> reporter: a slide was triggered that was several hundred feet wide and buried him. gy the time the rescuers had got to the scene, the two skier witnesses had actually located their friend. >> reporter: the friends dug barton out, but it was too late. >> this is a sad reminder of what can happen in these dangerous conditions.

gorgeous sky. beautiful sun today, all day. >> we had a shot a few minutes ago, looking west, you could see the blue ridge mountains so clearly. there are a few clouds moving in because of warmer air coming in up there, and eventually tomorrow it will be coming down here. i'm talking right now it's 58 in cincinnati, while to our north and west, it's in the 30s. right now we're at 45 degrees. still above average for this time of year. very dry. dewpoint is at 13 degrees. humidity 27%. west winds at 7, barometer holding steady. right now the really only school spot, 32 in oakland, close to 50 down to our south.
