taxing your gas. the governor's new plan that will drive your gas up. here's what people are talking about tonight. >> a brand new sales tax on gasoline on top of the state tax we already pay. that's what governor o'malley wants to pay for transportation projects. the new plan could add 20-cents to every gallon. >> reporter: the governor announced a proposal that would add 20-cents per gallon of gasoline. maryland's gas prices could

soon be the fourth highest. >> makes me want to go back to texas. >> reporter: in a interview with vic carter, o'malley says he knows it's going to a struggle. >> i know it's not going to be easy. but there's things that if we don't get them done, we end up paying in other ways. >> reporter: the 6% on gas would be phased in over three years. so for the three preponderate $48 you pay now, by next year you'll pay $3.54. with the full 6% it'll be $3.66 a gallon. political opponents say the governor's plan hits too close

to home. >> people have had enough. the families are struggling, the governor is living in a nightmare. >> when you add everything up, gas and everything else beside that that has increased in price, absolutely. >> how bad is that, the poor guys out here working for a living. >> reporter: o'malley says his proposal would put people back to work on transportation projects. sky chopper 13 flying over the scene in northeast. police tell wjz a group of men stole a lawn mower from a near by store. when they tried to escape they hit another car. a man died after he was thrown to the ground. four of the men ran away and are still on the lose tonight. another fatal crash touched down interstate 31 for hours. a tractor trailer crossed the

median and slammed into three cars. a man in one of those cars was killed in the crash. the northbound side of the highway is still closed right now. driving the wrong way on rout 50 in the dark of the early morning. a head on crash leaves four people dead including three teenagers. tonight mike hellgren has the 911 call if teenagers who tried to stop the tragedy from happening. >> we have a two vehicle collision. >> reporter: you can hear first responders as they rush to the scene of mangled trucks on highway 60. the wreck was so bad one of those cars bursts into flames. >> oh my god he's on the other side. >> i was mainly concerned he wasn't coming right at me. if he gets that far, there's going to be a real problem. it doesn't look like he was weaving. it might have been that somebody got on the wrong side of the highway, there's no traffic and they didn't realize it. >> reporter: three people died including two teenagers.

according to police and published reports britney walker was with two friends heading south on the northbound lanes of interstate 47 and somehow continued the wrong way on busy highway 50 headed west where she collided head on with a bmw. >> i'm trying to think where the heck did he get on at, unless he did a turn around or something and got confused. he, she whoever it is. >> reporter: state police are still investigating how someone could go so many miles until the wrong lane on this particular stretch of highway. i drive it every day. it's terrible yeah. it's horrible to hear. something like that can happen. because you can just imagine if something like that happens it's going to be deadly. >> reporter: police are waiting for toxicology tests to come back. they tell wjz speed was a it factor in the crash. it will take some time for police to piece all of this together as four families plan

i'm starting to feel we might win tomorrow, what do you think? >> reporter: the latest polls give romney a lead over gingrich. a suffolk university poll even suggests that lead is as wide as 20 points. >> i know the speaker is not real happy. speaker gingrich, he's not feeling real happy these days. i know it's sad. >> this is the most important election in i think my lifetime. >> reporter: gingrich has been appearing with herman cain and robert reagan. >> we elected a moderate in 1996 and he lost. mitt romney is more liberal than any of those candidates. >> reporter: romney has been outspend 4-1 in florida.

still, his hardest task is finding supporters even with all those ads. gingrich and romney have each won one state. a win in florida would crown one of them the true front runner and send them into nevada's caucus with a lot of momentum. danielle nottingham, wjz news. rick santorum and ron paul have not campaigned in florida for days. paul is focusing in voters in maine while santorum campaigns in missouri and minnesota. a show down building in annapolis over same-sex marriage. tonight hundreds rally around legislation to allow same-sex couples to marry. both sides are pulling out all the stops before tomorrow's hearing. >> reporter: debate is front and center in annapolis, and people on both sides of the issue are taking a substantial doubt. >> god bless marriage between one man and one woman. >> reporter: it's a rally for

rights in annapolis monday. in this instance, the crowds gathered argues about the white definition of marriage. they oppose same-sex marriage and want the state to define it as a union between a man and a woman. >> marriage is what holds the family together. without marriage you have no family and you have no society, it will then just crumble. >> reporter: same-sex couples want the right to get married in maryland, currently they don't have it. >> reporter: last week governor o'malley showed his support for same-sex marriage. he supporting a bill to make it legal. >> sometimes in our empathy that we feel with those who are treated unfairly, we respond to the sort of hurt of injustice. the inequality of our love,

water. a deputy heard their screams and quickly helped them out of the car. we're hearing 911 tapes from that deadly highway crash in florida. >> there's a lot of people on the floor. >> okay you see a lot of people. are they lying down? >> yes, oh god. >> reporter: callers reported crash after crash as they happened on interstate 75 in gainesville. 10 people were killed and more than a dozen others were rushed to the hospital. it's so foggy one survivor said he could barely see his hands but he clearly heard screams and explosioning as the cars piled up. >> all you could hear was the cars hitting each other, explosioning. you could not see anything. it was blinding. you never knew what was coming from where and i think that was the scariest part. >> reporter: police are being criticized because they closed

the road for an earlier crash but reopened it before the huge pile up. bad weather prevented the latest attempt to start pumping thousands of gallons of toxic fuel from the ship. there are growing concerns the fuel could leak causing a major environmental disaster. at least 17 people died when the costa concordia ran aground 15 days ago. 15 others are missing tonight and are presumed dead. a dentist with ties to maryland is headed to prison after he admitted to using paper clips during root canals. >> reporter: he walked into court in fall river massachusetts having already pleaded guilty to defrauding medicare of $130,000 over a two year period. he must pay back all of that.

monday he learned the other price he will pay, jail time. >> certainly some period of incarceration is necessary. >> i, i have attempted to temporary -- justice with mercy in arriving at a fair sentence in this case. >> it is the order of this court to punish by confinement to the county house of correction for a period of 2- 1/2 years. >> reporter: all but a year of that sentence is suspended. claire who now lives in craftton was shackled and handcuffed to begin serving his time right away. brenda armidian says the punishment is not nearly enough. >> he should have got more time. if people knew the pain and suffering my kids went to, instead of sending him to the

ymca or something. >> reporter: after the root canal, her son's tooth turned black and had to be pulled. the 22-year-old skipped out on jury duty after lunch so a judge slapped him with an odd punishment. he was forced to carry a sign around the courthouse to let people know what he did. he is also scheduled back on monday. a california based company has developed a new coiling that can proof your phone. the company describes the coating as a nano coating including all the components inside. right now the treatment costs about $60. will it work in the rain too. >> water is water. >> i would get it for sure.

missouri, illinois, arkansas, in the mid-60s. that is moving directly across the ohio valley into our region. we'll probably be around 60, 62 degrees tomorrow. the same thing for wednesday. then a frontal system to the northwest. maybe bringing us a few showers late wednesday. but even behind the front it's not that cold. there's a few showers across the west lakes as that warm air is riding over the chilly air to create a little pit of light precept. we had a slight shower, some spots picked up as much as a trace to an inch. right now pretty clear skies, looks like they'll probably stay that way. here comes that warmer air. a big jump tomorrow the temperatures. still mild on wednesday. but more clouds and this front is going to stall out. little area of low pressure will probably give us at least another chance of showers here on thursday. but still above normal temperatures. southwest winds five to 10 knots.
