south carolina limping. he was the favorite going in and walks away the front runner once again. a triumphant mitt romney thanked his supporters for a big victory in florida's republican primary. >> a competitive primary does not divide us. it prepares us. we will win. >> reporter: it is romney's second win and the largest delgate haul so far in the 2012 campaign, but it was an expensive campaign. romney and his supporters spent more than $14 million on tv ads to secure florida. it was a tough loss for newt gingrich who led in the polls here just last week. he says he's not giving up. >> we are going to contest every place and we are going to win and we will be in tampa as the nominee in august. >> reporter: voters said the economy was by far the most important issue in this race. according to exit polls, half of those who responded said foreclosures were a major problem in their area.

recent debates were also a factor in their decisions. 2/3 said they helped to make up their minds. about a third of voters faulted romney and about a third faulted gingrich for running the most unfair campaign. rick santorum is also exchange in nevada. he urged his opponents to stop abe attacking each -- attacking each other. >> what we saw in the last few weeks in the state of florida isn't something that's going to help us win the election. >> if it helps win elections, we win hands down. >> reporter: ron paul bypassed florida to concentrate on nevada and other caucus states. gingrich being a nonldz he couldn't -- acknowledged he couldn't overcome being out pent by romney -- outspent by romney. he said he and his supporters will help people power defeat money power. cbs news, now back to you. >> ok. thank you very much, danielle. we've just learned romney will get secret service protection

starting tomorrow. a car crash, a stolen police cruiser, wild getaway and one man is dead tonight. the crime that involved officers from two counties and the city and ended in a shootout. >> reporter: the violence ended at the shopping center in baltimore city where police shot and killed a man after they say he stole a cruiser and threatened an officer. >> it woke me up. crime is getting worse and worse around this neighborhood. i think it's crazy. >> reporter: investigators say it started a few miles away around 2:00 a.m. when a baltimore county cop tried to pull over a driver without his headlights on the beltway. that driver fled and crashed near i-95. then, things got really heated. >> he began to engage the officer and fight. according to county police, the suspect told the officer that he has a gun and he will shoot the officer. >> reporter: somehow, police say he managed to steal the police car and drove it to a motel 6. minutes later, police saw an suv speed out of that parking lot with several people inside including the guy who

stole the police cruiser. they pulled it over and said somehow that man got in the driver's seat and drove away while police were putting the others in custody. police did recover some surveillance video from a bar and restaurant near the motel 6. the owner said they asked him not to share it with the media. investigators say next their suspects headed to annapolis road and that shopping center where it all ended. he died in police gunfire. three baltimore county officers shot their weapons along with one officer from anne arundel county. it's unknown how many shots went off and unclear whether the suspect was armed at the time. >> they don't know what's on this man's mind although i think they may have could have done it a little better if they didn't see weapon in his hands. >> reporter: baltimore county police say their three officers involved are all on routine administrative lead. city police remain the lead investigators. wnlz eyewitness news -- wjd

news. >> -- wjz news. they say they used methods to track them and three other suspects are being questioned tonight. a crash killed four people when a teen drove the long way down route 50. we have new clues in what may have caused that tragedy. >> reporter: toxicology tests show the teenager that was driving the wrong way down that road was under the influence and so was the driver she hit. >> there's a car going the wrong way on 97. >> reporter: for 15 minutes, drivers frantically called 911 to report a car driving the wrong direction on 97 and route 50. >> i don't think they had a clue they're on the wrong side of the road. >> reporter: police didn't catch up in time. 19-year-old brittany walker crashed head on into a bmw and died along with passengers breanna franko and zachary rose. the other driver 55-year-old

terry davis also killed. now investigators say both drivers were under the influence. >> she was driving on the belong side -- on the wrong side of the highway. i don't know if alcohol is related or not. i just don't know. >> reporter: walker's family struggles to figure out why the teen was on the wrong side of the road. the family of terry davis wants to know where were the police. >> why weren't the cops there to stop them before they hit terry? >> reporter: saying wyatt nearly caught up in the crash. >> adrien line takes over and i'm -- adrenaline takes over and i'm caught in survival mode. >> reporter: he swerves just in time to avoid being hit by walker's car. he was here when the chrysler flew by him in the wrong direction. it would go another five miles before the wreck. >> either they're look to go hit someone or they're just that far out of control. >> reporter: wyatt says he isn't surprised alcohol is involved. he's just sorry it ended so

tragically. we've learned brittany walker was ticketed in 2010 for going 91 miles per hour in a 65-mile- per-hour zone. reporting live, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you. investigators a say a small amount of marijuana was also found in walker's car. an arrest in the murder of a well-known community activity prince george's county police say linwood johnson confessed today to killing lenny harris. harris' body was found last week. he was an act visit in the community. they say the two men knew each other and johnson says robbery was the motive. new information from jfk's assassination on that day has just been released to the public. we're hearing long lost audio tapes from air force one. >> reporter: these tapes really catapult listeners back into time. on them we hear lindon johnson consoling john kennedy's mother after the assassination as johnson himself assumes the

molesting his students in the classroom. investigators say 61-year-old mark burns put cockroaches on the faces of blindfolded children with their mouths taped shut and then photographed it. burns is charged with committing multiple vulgar acts on two dozen children over a three-year period. he was arrested after he tried to have the photos developed. new allegations of the sex abuse case at syracuse university. tonight, the wife of the accused is a target. a slander suit against syracuse claims that coach bernie fine's wife laurie was known to have sex with players. her husband is accused of molesting a ball boy. that alleged victim bobby davis says it was widely known that mrs. fine had affairs with players. her lawyer says those claims are disgusting. the search for survivors aboard the sub pernlgd costa concordia is over -- submerged costa concordia is over. 15 people are still missing. officials suspended the search because of safety concerns for the rescue workers. the ship is loaded with about
