i'm angry. i'm disgusted. i'm sad. >> that's the reaction from the parents of some california students. where why are former teachers being held on $23 million bail? >> hi. i'm kai jackson! and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> he's charged with taking bizarre photos of a student. today, a judge ruled to significantly increase his bail. edward lawrence reports for wjz with the latest from los angeles. >> bail is now set at $23 million. for mark burn, one million for each of his alleged victims. the former los angeles elementary schoolteacher is accused of committing lewd acts against two dozen children. he simply said yes, i do, when asked if he understood the charges he faced.

police say the teacher blindfolded students, taped their mouths shout and-- shut and put live roaches on their face. he also fed them bodily fluids with a spoon. >> all of the allegations are that the events happened at the school, in the classroom. >> reporter: police say the crimes date back to 2005 of the, and the alleged victims range in age, from 7 to 10. none reported what was happening. >> reporter: police launched the investigation a year ago, after an employee at a photo shop alerted employees to the pictures. >> the school fired burn last year. >> it's an outrage for something like this to go on in our schools, undetected. >> reporter: police kept burn under surveillance and uncovered more than 400 pictures. officers arrested him at his home monday. investigators are trying to identify 10 more children in the photographs and say there could be more victims. in los angeles, edward lawrence, wjz eyewitness news.

>> mark burn faces life in prison if convicted. parents are angry no one told them about the investigation. but police say they had to keep the case quiet, while they searched for evidence. >> fears of environmental damage from the crippled costa concordia. vic is in the newsroom with that and other new developments from italy today. vic? >> well, the sheen of oil appears to be coming from the stern of the ship. environmental experts are trying to determine just how bad the ship is. the ship contains about 500,000 gallons of heavy fuel. italian police are also identifying a body found in the wreckage. a german woman is the 17th person pulled from the luxury liner. meanwhile, the children missing in the disaster are planning a memorial service for their parents. the search is being suspended because of danger to the rescuers. bitter battle. republican presidential front runner, mitt romney, is running

west. last night, romney scored a huge victory in florida's primary. despite winning less than a third of the vote, newt gingrich vowed to fight on. romney launched an expensive attack ad campaign, leading up to the primary. rick santorum is urging his opponents to ease up on each other. santorum and ron paul skipped out to campaign out west. next up is the nevada caucus saturday. this unseasonably warm weather is putting a spring in everyone's step, it seems. wjz found dozens of students studying and lunching outside at the university of baltimore today. some had short sleeves but it was hard to find anybody with a coat on, maybe just a sweater or scarf. outside right now, it's sunny and mild. even the crocuses are confused, not sure whether to come out and stay out. they don't know. the croci. meteorologist tim williams is

here. tim, we are seeing some of the spring flowers. >> yeah. they're confused. everyone is confuse the ed. mother -- confused. mother nature is confused. we watch another portion of it moving through late tonight. but ahead of that front, we have had unseasonably mild temperatures with the warm front leading the way. temperatures have gone way up today. and we have another batch of rain moving into the region that we may see a bit of tonight. but let's take a look at the temperatures around the area. with the good bit of warm air we had. we have been up over 67 degrees in the last hour. we're now down, down to 67 degrees, on the first day of february. 51 in oakland. 59 in cumberland. 65 in elkton. we are warmer here than we are in ocean city. so i guess if you really want to take a dip, come up to the inner harbor. that might be your best bet. we'll talk about your unseasonably mild temperature. and talk about times past. >> looking forward to it, tim.

thank you. tax increases and same-sex marriage are the focus of governor martin o'malley's state of the state address. political reporter pat warren has more on the plan for the state. >> reporter: governor o'malley's state of the state address draws blood from republicans and possibly maryland's working class. >> the state of our state is strong. >> reporter: this positive picture of maryland is governor o'malley's address wins the support of lawmakers as they prepare to tackle some of the negatives. a budget deficit and transportation needs with proposed tax increases. >> look. i know that every family is still feeling the effects of this recession. the people i serve are the people that you serve. i know this is a very, very difficult ask. but nobody else is going to do this for us. except for us. >> reporter: as the governor delivers his message, many marylanders have this message

for him. >> adjust can't seem to find another way to meet the budget by like making cuts like i do at home. they've stolen the money, out of the transportation fund. and they're not putting it back. and if they put it back, there would be no need for this. >> we just think it's the wrong time to be talking about a tax increase. >> reporter: the governor plans to add a 6% sales tax to gasoline over the next three years. he also wants to increase income taxes for marylanders who make more than $100,000. >> asking our fellow citizens to do more will not be popular. but without anger, without fear, without any meanness, and the course of this discussion, let's ask one another how much less education do you think would be good for our children's future? how much less education do we want? how much less public safety? how many fewer jobs? >> although the governor enjoys a party majority in the general assembly, there are likely to

be some changes to his plans before they come to a final vote. reporting from the house of delegates in annapolis, i'm pat warren. back to you on tv hill. >> republican senator e.j. pipkin, the senate minority leader says the government is planning too much to balance the budget. they lost their son to a deadly crash. now, the son -- parents of nathan cras nipolar are here to talk about the loss. >> reporter: the law would extend driver's license renewals and eye exams from 5 years to 8 years. the student at johns hopkins was hit on his -- by a car while on his bike bicycle. the woman saw him but forgot he was there. she got out of her car but didn't call 911 or ask for help. he was trap underneath the car. the doctors declared him brain dead.

they want there to be more testing to test drivers competency. a robbery in an upscale city neighborhood has people fearful today. two women were robbed outside of petite louis outside of the 400 block of roland avenue last night. they were getting into a car when a man approached him, saying there was a gun. he tried to grab the purse of another. but the second woman fought back. and the woman ran away. hear from coming up all new at 5:00 and 6:00. bge is in the northwest section of the city, investigating the gas main break. it happened in the 3400 block of park heights avenue. the gas appeared to be leaking from a manhole cover. the city's firefighters are sifting through the as hazmat. there are no reports of injuries. let's check in on the roads with kristy breslin, at wjz traffic control. we are starting off with some slowing on the beltway. traveling on the north side inner loop, you definitely will

and today, the music world is mourning the passing of don corneilious. alexis christoforous reports for wjz, the soul train creator took his own life. >> reporter: police responded to a report of a shooting at the mulholland drive home of don cornelius. the creator and host of the popular tv show, soul train. they pronounced the 75-year-old dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. soul train began as a local program in 1970. and aired to 2006. eventually becoming the longest- syndicated show in television history. >> when we started to believe that we had something, like the day aretha franklin walked in the door, we were like, okay. it's starting to look right now. >> reporter: cornelius created the pilot for soul train with $400 of his own money. he also started one of the first award shows that honored

black music. >> a lot of folks felt like it wasn't big enough to have its own party, its own celebration. >> reporter: the show's iconic dance line inspired viewers to get up and groove in their own living room. music producer quincy jones said his friend was a pioneer and giant in our business. before mtv, there was soul train. that will be the great legacy of don cornelius. and they said, god bless him for the solid foundation he provided. cornelius stepped down as the show's host in 1993. he received a star on the hollywood walk of fame in 1997. he always wished his viewers loved peace and soul. >> alexis christoforous, wjz eyewitness news. in his later years, cornelius had a troubled marriage and significant health issues, though he never revealed specifics. wjz will have what people here in maryland are saying about cornelius's death coming up new

we have breaking news to report. at least 73 are killed and hundreds injured in a riot. details are still coming up.

what we do know, fans came in, throwing stones. fireworks and bottles and other fans and some players. dozens were crushed to death. more than 1,000 people are hurt. the championship game is indefinitely suspended. well, the fbi raids a massachusetts apartment, after a two-year investigation but makes one big mistake. agents raided the wrong apartment, using a chain saw to break down the door. the woman who lives there said she screamed they had the wrong apartment. well, it turns out the person agents were looking for lived next door. the fbi has apologized and reimbursed the family for the damage. a passenger train derails in michigan, after crashing into a tractor-trailer. it happened as the amtrak train was headed for chicago. the truck driver was taken to the hospital. and amtrak says there are no reports of life-threatening injuries. one passenger says his seat was knocked loose when the crash happened. still no word on a cause. a new york woman who worked for the catholic church is

accused of stealing nearly $1 million from the church. those who know the woman are shocked. >> reporter: toss her neighbors, anita collins was a devout catholic, who attended mass daily. >> she seemed nice. she does. she seems like a hard-working woman, believe me. >> reporter: but manhattan's district attorney says the 67- year-old collins was a thief, who stole at least $1.2 million from the hamp di -- archdiocese of new york. her attorney, howard simmons, says its client is sorry. >> she's incredibly remorseful and ashamed. and i'm told at the arraignment that she has made a full confession. >> reporter: collins worked as a clerk at the archdiocese for nearly eight years. she allegedly wrote over 450 checks and plailingsed it in her son -- placed it in her son's account. each check was under $2500, which meant she didn't have to get approval from officials. joe swilling is a spokesman for the church. >> she was very careful in how

she did this. as the d.a. said, this was a sophisticated fraud. >> reporter: collins lived a modest life, sharing this apartment in the bronx with her daughter. but police removed paintzings and box -- paintings and boxes, with collectible dolls. prosecutors say she spent more than $37,000 on clothing from barney's and brooks brothers. $18,000 on bloomingdale's. and $19,000 on an irish gift shop, all while earning less than $50,000 a year. >> collins remains behind bars and has been charged with grand larceny and falsifying business records. if convicted, she could go to prison for at least 25 years. some money is made on wall street today. [ stock bells ringing ] all the majority markets posted significant gains. dow up. nasdaq up 34. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> the stocks kicked off the month of february with a rally,

after their best january in 15 years. u.s. factories increased their output in january by the most in 7 months. and the commerce department says construction spending rose 1 1/2% in december for the fifth monthly gain in a row. u.s. auto sales are off to a strong start this year. chrysler says they were up 44% last month. ford sales rose about 7 1/2% on strong demand for small cars and suvs. but sales at general motors fell 6% because of weak demand for crossover vehicles. like the equinox and acadia. private employers added 170,000 new jobs last month. that's about 10,000 fewer than expected. on friday, we'll get a broader picture of the labor market. wall street expects that report to show the jobless rate held steady at 8 1/2%. and bankrupt american airlines wants to cut labor costs by 20%.

the records near the 70s. about 75 back in 2002. so even though these days are very mild and very warm, we are not quite at the record levels. 47% relative humidity, with a west/northwesterly wind. we've seen a bit of a southwest wind moving across the region. responsible for much of our temperatures going up. now going to see a uniform shift in the temperatures to the west and northwest. and that's going to keep us a little cooler. should keep us cooler going into tomorrow. we have 51 now in oakland. 64 in elkton. 65 on the shore. the nation's capital at 68 this evening. 68 in the state capital. 68 on kent island and we see rain from 61 in westminster, up to 66 over toward columbia. the winds have been coming in from the southwest, now shifting to the northwest. all the result of a front moving through the region. one portion of that has already moved through. that front has pushed now south of the region. it will stall out down around southern virginia and allow

another ripple of low pressure to move in from the tennessee valley. now, that low pressure is going to ride along that front. and we're going to be close enough that we'll see potentially some widely scattered showers, just after midnight, and into the early hours of tomorrow. when the winds shift to the northwest, we'll start to see again, temperatures dropping. so the cooler air moves in. but we'll still be with higher pressure moving in. and bringing the temperatures in the 50s. so still going to be a nice stretch heading into the weekend. small craft advisory will be lifted as of 6:00 p.m. tonight, going down to 42. that is actually our normal daytime high for this time of year. 54 tomorrow. a little rain in the morning. then with tomorrow being groundhog day, it leads us to ask the clint eastwood style question, do you feel lucky, punk? punxsutawney phil will tell us whether it's six more weeks of winter. >> mr. williams, you're funny. >> you like that. >> yeah. i did like is that. -- that. >> i hope he says the right

hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. mitt romney is back on top in the race for the gop nomination. and he's carrying the momentum from his florida primary win as he campaigns in minnesota and nevada. but as randall pinkston reports for wjz, mitt romney is fighting hard to knock down the lead. >> i'm happy for a little celebration. this is confetti. we just won florida! >> reporter: the former massachusetts governor had one hiccup after his big victory. having to explain an interview where he said he wasn't concerned about the very poor. >> of course i'm concerned about all americans. wealthy, middle class. but the focus of my effort is middle-income families. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: romney left florida with momentum and lots of cash. newt gingrich finished 14 point bes hind -- behind but says he

is not backing down. >> if there is a chance to nominate a conservative who knows what he is doing, who has done it before, and who has the courage and determination to get it done. >> reporter: in the state's fundraiser and caucuses, gingrich is way behind in fundraising and in organizing volunteers and staffers on the ground. >> reporter: the former speaker is fighting hard to convince voters it's a two-man nomination. romney's is the opposite, calling it a four-candidate contest. with santorum and paul in the mix. one person saying santorum is aimed at convincing voters he is the best conservative challenger to president obama. ron paul has a strong game. he skipped florida to rally in caucus states. >> now, the candidates' next debate is scheduled for february 22nd in arizona.

and between now and then, they'll compete in primaries in colorado, nevada, maine and missouri. 10 people lost their lives in a huge pileup. now, days later, police are raising the delt death toll. >> investigators say they found another body inside a crashed car at the heart of the pileup. officials say it took more than two days to determine a third person was inside a destroyed pickup truck because the vehicle was burned so badly and crushed. at least a dozen cars, six tractor-trailers and a motor home collided when drivers were blinded with a mix of fog and smoke from a nearby brush fire. highway patrol closed that due to limited visibility. the first pileup occurred a short time later. >> thank you. the crashes left 18 people injured. well, no need to double- check your calendar. it really is february 1st. but it sure felt like april outside. on a very warm, sunny day in our area. felt like spring. many people took advantage.

this lady and this lady. a walk and a jog around lake montebello. here's a live look outside. mostly clear sky on a warm afternoon. bob is here with updated numbers. bob? >> believe it or not, we came this close to breaking a record. 68 degrees a little while ago at bwi marshall. now, we have a little cooler air headed our way. take a look at radar. and with that front coming through late tonight, perhaps as this low passes across virginia, we might just see a little bit of rain. right now, we're at 66 degrees. tomorrow, i expect the high to be probably in the low 50s, still 10 degrees above normal, vic. pretty amazing stuff. >> okay, bob. thank you. a nato soldier is dead, accidentally shot by afghan security forces. and this time, -- and this isn't the first time. as manuel gallegus reports for wjz, the department of defense says this has happened more than 40 times in the last four years. >> reporter: two american soldiers in kandahar province

were victims of what the military calls an insider attack. an afghani man, hired to protect rudy kessler and donald miller shot them dead. andeur troops are in afghanistan to protect the afghans and american government. to protect the people they're fighting with and for undermines the entire operation and places our troops at an unacceptable level of risk. >> the defense department says the number of attacks on u.s. and coalition forces is rising. more than 40 in the last five years, killing 70 and wounding more than 100. >> military officials told the house armed services committee that the afghans often attack for personal reasons. >> one is a simple insult. another is combat stress that the individuals render. cultural miss understandings. religious and ideological frictions. >> reporter: in other cases, they are insurgents who infiltrate afghan security forces. they are improving the

screening process to reduce threats, but admit there is no way to eliminate them. >> this is a thinking enemy we're dealing with here. a cunning enemy. and every now and then, the enemy is going to have success. >> reporter: they are also stepping up cultural and language training to trere duce friction, leading to violence. -- to reduce friction, leading to violence. >> the nato-led coalition wants local forces to step up and take responsibility for their own security. prosecutors in the jerry sandusky child sex abuse investigation are asking the judge to bring in jurors from outside the area. they filed an official request this week, saying media coverage has likely tainted the jury pool. the coach is accused of physically abusing 10 underaged boys. prosecutors said the names will be given to the defense sometime this week. the case of a man accused of murdering a maryland

correctional officer is now in the hands of the jury. lee edward stevens and another inmate are both charged with stabbing officer david mcgwynn to death at the maryland house of correction in jessop in 2006. closing arguments took place today. if convicted, stevens could face the death penalty. wjz is in the courtroom. we'll have more on this case, new at 5:00. in today's healthwatch. a big drug recall. a major company is pulling about a million birth control pills from store shelves. >> the drug company, pfizer says the birth control pills may not stop users from getting pregnant. investigators found packaging errors where some pacts of the hormone-based drugs had too many active tablets while other his too few. here is the list of pills in question. take a close look at them. the affected packets have expiration dates ranging between july 31, 2013. and march 31st, 2014.

two police officers in new jersey risk their lives to save a man from a burning car, and it's all caught on tape. it happened in barngat township, as two officers found a 57-year-old man, incapacitated, inside his car, which was fultly engulfed in flames. officers were able to pull the man to safety. and he was then taken to the hospital. the cause of the fire is under investigation. the 911 tapes from a fatal police shooting in utah last month, were just released.

scuffles, they threatened to arrest everyone. and the crowd scattered. a man walking his dogs in california is shot by a stun gun. it happened during a confrontation between the dog walker and a federal park ranger in the golden gate national recreation area. now, a witness said it started because the man had two of his dogs off a leash. and when the man tried to walk away, he was shot with a stun gun. the national parks service is investigating. it's just as bad as alcohol and tobacco. we're talking about sugar. in tonight's health watch, terrel brown reports, that a group of experts say it should be regulated the same way. >> reporter: we all know too many sweets pack on the pounds. but they're often too hard to resist. >> i love sugar. >> a commentary in the latest issue of nature says sugar is responsible for the high rates of obese it, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, -- and should be regulated. >> because of the way sugar is
