rage and sadness. a rise at a soccer game. >> dozens killed. who is to blame? >> i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> massacre at a soccer game. dozens are killed during that massacre at cairo. many are being blamed for the bloodshed. tina kraus reports. >> reporter: angry people march through the streets, to bury the dead after a soccer massacre. at least 73 people died wednesday night when home team fans bust onto the field. many rival fans were suffocated or crushed to death, trying to

escape through a narrow exit. some were thrown from the tops of the bleaches. others attacked with knives and clubs. protests are now under way across the country. many blame riot police for standing by and doing nothing about the violence and the stampede that followed. some politicians believe the security lapse was intentional, to fuel chaos in the country, after last february's fall of president hosni mubarak. these aren't hoodlums, they're sports fanatic he says. egypt's prime min story called an emergency -- minister called an emergency section of parliament. he said he fired every member of the soccer federation and put them in danger. the police chief and governor at port said have resigned, over the worst soccer violence

in 15 years. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. and the riot comes on the one- year anniversary of one of the most violent days in the uprising against mubarak, when loyalists attacked protestors in tahrir square. wjz is following a story that is developing now. four suspects are behind bars, in connection with a deadly shooting outside towson during the holidays. jessica kartalija has more on who is in custody. >> reporter: that's right, kai. three of those suspects were yesterday. the most recent arrests came just this morning. >> reporter: in the middle of the holiday shopping rush, police are called to a shooting outside towson town center. there, they discovered 19-year- old rodney privilegeet, on the -- prijet on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. now, four suspects are arrested, charged in his murder. 19-year-old tyrone brown, 31- year-old frank williams, 35- year-old journalle brandon, and

44-year-old william ward iii. they are being held at the baltimore county detention center. surveillance video from towson town center security shows one of the suspects approached pridget inside the mall. it also shows the suspect walking through the mall and parking garage after the murder. >> it's important to tell our citizens, they're safe when they come to our malls and shopping centers. >> reporter: the teenager did have a criminal record, but his family says he was working it tourn his life around. a motive behind the killing is still unclear. the suspects are charged with first-degree murder. i'm jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> wjz just finished talking with police about the investigation. we'll have the latest coming up all new at 5:00. treasure among the tragedy. new worries for italian police guarding the costa concordia. >> the chaotic evacuation of

the sinking ship abandoned almost everything, including jewels, cash and antiques. police hope divers are not run through the wreckage. among the sunken treasures are a collection of 300-year-old art work and the gems. passengers own their sunken objects. the site is being guarded 24 hours a day. 17 people are confirmed dead, 15 still missing from that january 13th shipwreck. >> the ship's captain is under house arrest, facing accusations of manslaughter and abandoning ship. a major endorsement for a gop presidential candidate today. in a surprise twist, moments ago, donald trump endorsed mitt romney, not newt gingrich for the republican presidential nominee. trump's former -- trump made the announcement about an hour ago, at his las vegas hotel, with romney in attendance.

planned parenthood grants for years, funding 70,000 breast exams. in a new web video, komen's founder gave the reason for the decision, it was the result of new regulations. >> regrettably, this will affect a number of longstanding partners, but we have always done what is right for our organization. >> but richards has a different theory. >> this decision, as unfortunate as it is, was the result of a political pressure campaign, kind of a bullying effort against the komen foundation, trying to get them to break this relationship with planned parenthood. >> reporter: planned parenthood parenthood -- >> it is the largest abortion provider in the united states, period. >> reporter: florida republican cliff stern has launched an investigation into planned parenthood's use of taxpayer funds. the komen foundation says that investigation was a factor in their decision.

democrats called the investigation a partisan witch hunt that will go nowhere. >> last time i checked, we were all presumed innocent until prove guilty. >> and that was nancy cortes reporting. hear from a represent -- representative of the local planned parenthood new at 5:00 and 6:00. today, interior secretary ken salazar met with governor martin o'malley. he said they foundne problem with significant winds. the mid-atlantic proposal comes after a project in massachusetts was given the go ahead in 2010. as you know, it's been an unseasonably warm winter in maryland. but winter is far from over. punxsutawney phil makes his predictions on this groundhog's day. >> as i look at the cob on gobbler's nob, many shadows do i see. six more weeks of winter it

police release surveillance video they say shows occupy protestors breaking into city hall in oakland, california. take a look. the demonstrators were able to get inside the building, using what police call a pry tool. once inside, they stole various items, including an american flag. more than 400 people were arrested during the protests over the weekend. police in kansas city, missouri, released video of the night they responded to the call the night 10-month-old lisa irwin was missing. >> she's been gone. and i didn't notice anything. >> baby lisa was last seen in her crib, october 4th. nearly four months later, no arrests have been made and suspicions continue toy main on

her -- to remain on her parents. the couple will appear on dr. phil's talk show tomorrow and share their theories on what happened. it is a story of survival with a very happy ending. a little girl from maine received not one or two but six life-saving organ transplants and is now on the road to recovery. ken mccloud has more. >> reporter: little alanna shevenle left children's this afternoon, bound for the family farm in maine. >> they gave our family back. she's finally going to have a shot at a normal life. >> reporter: that seemed almost impossible. >> she had no other options. this was the only way she was going to survive. >> reporter: that only way, thought children's chief pediatric surgeon was a 14-

step, two-hour operation, replacing with a liver, pancreas, spleen, liver and esophagus. a first. >> this is a very difficult operation. about as difficult as you can get. >> reporter: a -- it all came together in october when, after waiting, a perfect pediatric donor came through. >> we would encourage people to consider pediatric donation. >> she's a spunky little kid. >> spunky and precocious, her grandma says. smart enough beyond her nine years to realize what's been handed her. >> she said, dr. kim, thank you for my new organs. so it was great to hear that from her. >> reporter: if all goes well, doctors say she can go back to school and tackle all of that normal kid stuff, even play sports if she wants to. >> she's happy. we're going back to maine. >> reporter: doctors will watch closely for any sign the rare disease is returning.

in the meantime, ilanna will continue to take 23 pills a day, aimed at keeping her body from rejecting her new organs. not a lot of movement on wall street today. investors are waiting for tomorrow's big jobs report. the dow is down 11. s&p is up 1. and the nasdaq is up 11. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. new reports today show the job market is improving. but americans are still cautious about their spending. the labor department says the number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell by 12,000 last week. the government is expected to report tomorrow that january was another solid month for hiring. unusually warm winter weather is leaving some retailers out in the cold. mild temperatures mean hats, gloves, coateses and boots aren't selling as well. sales were disappointing in macy's and dillard. but better than expected at costco, target and kohl's.

around the state, the northwest wind is the dominant wind right now. it's drying us out from the rain we had. and in the early hours of this morning, we had pretty stiff winds out there. 21-mile-per-hour winds in hagerstown and d.c. 10-mile-per- hour winds in oakland. 13 in elfk -- elkton. and they start to taper off. the winds are out ahead of high pressure that is building in behind that low that took the rain right off shore with it. but as high pressure builds in, even though we're getting a bit of a northwest wind, even through tomorrow, it's the position of that high that is going to allow for mild air again for today. we have warmer temperatures to our south. colder around the great lakes, where the cold, cold air seems to be pretty much locked in place. but the high is responsible for all of this clearing here. and a good bit of sunshine. and we'll have almost clear skies. perfectly clear ky of skies tomorrow -- skies tomorrow. the high is going to sink to

their combat mission in afghanistan a year ahead of schedule. i the obama administration had set a deadline of 2014 to end the fighting. but defense secretary leon pineta says he hopes to shift the role. president obama addressed the state of the union last month. >> the taliban's momentum has been broken. and some troops in afghanistan have begun to come home. >> reporter: but a leaked nato report has concerns about what will happen in afghanistan, once coalition troops pull out. the reports say the it would -- taliban is confident it would take over. republican presidential hopeful mitt romney slammed defense jettary -- secretary pineta for pulling it early. >> he announced that. so the taliban hears it, the

afghanistanies hear it, the pakistanis hear it. why in the world do you tell the people you're fighting with that you're pulling out your troops? it makes absolutely no sense. >> reporter: u.s. officials say no plans for the u.s. mission in afghanistan will be final until a nato meeting in may. i'm nanette sosa reporting. >> the u.s. has been fighting in afghanistan for more than 10 years since just after the september 11th terror attacks. y pineta -- pineta said his goal is to end it by 2013. may not be headed to trial next month after all. kai jackson has more on what attorneys plan to ask for afterward. >> the judge ruled nidal has hassan's attorneys asked for more time to compile evidence in the case. hassan was charged with killing 13 people and wounding dozens more in the 2009 shooting spree. the trial is expected to last about two months.

prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case. denise? >> hasssan who studied to be a psychiatrist here in maryland has not entered a plea. thousands more suspected terrorists are now banned from flying in and out of the u.s. the government's no-fly government's no-fly list has doubled in the past year from 10,000 to 20,000. this is after president obama called for this after an attempted attack on christmas in 2009. the man who assassinated senator robert f. kennedy. the judge denied the appeal for sirhan sirhan. he was convicted of assassinating kennedy in 1968 while kennedy was running for president. his lawyers are now claiming a bullet was switched in evidence at his trial and new forensic details could exonerate him. the nevada primary is just two days away, and donald is --

going on. >> reporter: denise, we have a pedestrian struck in the reisterstown section of baltimore county. this is reisterstown and franklin boulevard, where an 18- year-old male was struck in the intersection by, looks like a minivan. that 18-year-old was transported by maryland state police medivac helicopter to shock trauma, in critical condition, baltimore county police are on the scene. the driver of the vehicle did remain on scene and it appears no one inside the van was injured. baltimore county police do have reisterstown road detoured, both north and southbound. they're making traffic detour onto franklin boulevard and then back onto reisterstown road. expect delays both north and southbound as baltimore county police continue. >> thank you, captain mike perry, live in sky eye chopper 13. jury selection in the george hughly murder trial. he is charged with killing his

ex-girlfriend, yeardley love. emotional help will be available for students students and faculty at uva during the high-profile trial. they are preparing for the media onslaught. reporters will be allowed in the courtroom but no testimony can be recorded. jerry sandusky is blaming the attorney general of for the firing of late head coach joe paterno. mary has more on what the attorney is claiming. >> sandusky's lawyer says an embellished grand jury report set off the public outcry, which led to the legendary coach's removal. he says they sensationalized it. the attorney says the comment did not merit a response. paterno passed away last month, following a brief battle with lung cancer. >> sandusky is out on bail and waiting trial on charges that

he molested 15 boys over an eight-year period. one person is taking their dog in a leisurely stroll, while others walk themselves around. taking a live look outside right now. still another fairly mild day, considering the time of the year. what can we expect for the rest of the week? we have weather and traffic together. and bob is here first with first warning weather. for a minute, i thought it was a groundhog. it was a dog of some kind. let's take a look at temperatures and conditions. first of all, early on this morning. a few light sprinkles and showers moved across southern portions of the region. the airport actually only had a trace of rain. and it's well out to sea. we had sunshine, which boosted temperatures. right now, we're still in the 50 to 55-degree range. d.c., 54. we did get up to 56 degrees. normal high is still only in the low 40s. for the next several days, it

will be a little cooler than it's been. of course it was 70 degrees yesterday. that's kind of hard to top. but looks like the weekend, temperatures generally slightly above normal for this time of year. vic? >> let's check in on the roads now with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, vic. hi, everyone. let's go back and talk about that breaking news. sky eye chopper 13. as you can see, franklin boulevard and reisterstown road. we did have a pedestrian struck. shows that is closed off in both directions. there will be a lot of congestion in that area for sometime. so the best case scenario would be to avoid that area. and you can expect at least 15 to 20 minutes to bypass that whole scenario. we have a delay on the north side inner loop, from providence road to harford road. average speed, 30 miles an hour. west side inner loop, also struggling there. over to 70. another 15 to get through that delay. and another east side inner loop, an accident blocking the right-hand lane. northbound 95, another crash to

britain's oldest national newspaper is now part of a broadening hacking investigation. police are now looking into alleged e-mail interception by rupert murdoch's "times" of london. they admit to intercepting e- mail in 2009 to identify a police officer who blogged as knight jack. it was discovered when news of the world routinely listened on voice mails for stories. the children from washington state will stay with their maternal grandparents. that's after a custody hearing. their father, josh powell, was ordered to undergo a psycho evaluation. the court decided it was too dangerous for them to stay with their father. the boys' mother, susan powell, disappeared in 2009. a teacher accused of taking bizarre, bondage-style photos of his young students.

jessica kartalija has more. >> reporter: this isn't the first time the los angeles teacher has been investigated. in 1994, he was accused of trying to fondle a 10-year-old girl. authorities say that incident allegedly happened in september of 1993 but wasn't reported by the girl's mother until the following year. the girl claimed mark burn reached toward her during class, but she pushed his hand away. burns denied the accusation and the los angeles district attorney's office declined to prosecute. >> burns remains on bond. he's charged with committing lewd acts. a special needs teacher in florida could lose her job for how she disciplined her students. she allegedly used hot sauce to keep students in line. >> i was really upset. it was -- i couldn't believe it. honestly, i was like, how can a teacher of so many years do something like that? >> reporter: it's something parents and school officials

are still trying to make sense out of. why a special needs teacher would use hot sauce on autistic children here at sunrise elementary. when this woman found out, she was outraged. that's because two of those children are her 5-year-old nephews. >> i was just shocked and like confused. >> we're told lillian gomez poured the hot sauce on the children's crayons. the students apparently kept putting them in their mouth. gomez apparently wanted that to end. >> you have to feel traumatized, especially for a kid that can't express themselves. >> reporter: the family also tells me, after the teacher doused the crayons with hot sauce, the boys refused to touch them for weeks. >> reporter: when district officials round out -- found out, the teacher was removed from the classroom. now suspended. the superintendent is requesting that she be fired. >> i think she should be fired. >> reporter: a hearing is set for later this month.

in tonight's healthwatch, a medical breakthrough in australia, as researchers find a cause for one of the most serious complications of pregnancy. they have determined the cause of preeclampsia. right now, the only way to stop the condition is to have the baby. a drug can now be developed that specifically targets the protein. the mayor of topeka, kansas is addressing an idea of the way people dress. topeka's mayor wants to ban hooded sweatshirts and baseball caps in the city. he says it will lower the crime rate. but business owners say they will lose many customers because many people don't take off their attire when they go inside. city council gets heated. the man was apparently upset that the mayor, kevin johnson, was not helping him. the man said his identification was stolen, johnson did nothing to recover it. he threw his wallet at the
