talking about. reversing an unpopular decision. tonight the susan g. komen organization apologize z for cutting off funding to planned parenthood. >> certainly that biting back heard all over the country and komen not only changed the decision all together but said sorry to americans. >> when the susan g. komen foundation yanked funding to planned parenthood this week, it launched a national fire storm. >> it's unbelievable they would think it's okay to allow women to stop getting this health care. >> komen not only took back the decision but they said we want to apologize for the american public for decisions that cast doubt on our mission to save lives. >> it was political. the public was outraged by it. the members were outraged by

it. >> they said they severed ties after a congressional investigation. executives say they've been overwhelmed by the support and the reversal. >> it's really heartening to hear they've reconsidered their decision and the people who win are the women's health. >> it's a breast cancer survivor she says because of the very screening planned parenthood provides. she was diagnosed 30 years ago, one year after her mother died from breast cancer because she was not screened. >> i think it would be detrimental to a group of women at risk more than others. >> she's celebrating. komen foundation said they've been fighting angry phone calls all week.

>> thank you. planned parenthood has not explained why the criteria applied only to planned parenthood and not the other grantees. a baltimore county woman is dead. denise is in the newsroom. >> police believe they have recovered the car that ran over a 68-year-old woman as she crossed the street. she was carrying groceries home from the market when she was hit by a light colored sedan that never stopped. it happened on seven courts drive. investigators say a tip led them to the suspect's vehicle in hartford county. they're still trying to find out who was behind the wheel at the time of the accident. >> so far there are no arrests or citations in the case. updating the breaking news, let's go captain mike perry with details. what's happening. >> we're looking at the cleanup from this four or five-car

collision in northeastern baltimore county. the state police and state highway administrations have drug all the vehicles off into the center median area. the tow trucks are hooking up. apparently everyone has been transported to transported -- from the scene to area hospitals. it's caused severe delays and also affecting 895 back to the harbor tunnel freeway. you see traffic slowly moves past this accident scene. they expect to be cleared within the next half hour to 45 minutes. you can see it's very slow going. if you're coming out of town using i-95, expect delays. >> captain mike perry reporting live. police credit a massive camera network for the arrest at tolson town center. he appeared in court today.

we have new detail and reaction from. -- the killing here appears to be hastily planned. prosecutors said the getaway driver even forgot where his car was parked. police had their eyes on these suspects before the arrests. >> reporter: a judge denied bail today. in court wjz learned more about the surveillance video that police credit with solving the case. it's a network of 200 cameras at the mall upgraded after the murder of a teacher here during a botched robbery in 2005. prosecutors said the video they recovered in this case does not show the actual shooting. it does slow the accused shooter walking through the mall wearing a mask. we've learned jamiel brandon, the person who spotted the victim and tracked him through the mall was interviewed twice

before they arrested him. brandon's lawyer. >> i wouldn't say he's cooperative, but he he's come in and spoken. the entire family is shocked that he had been arrested. >> the victim's father is heart broken but relieved. >> they need to be in jail. you can't go around here killing people. it was my only son. i love him, and i miss him. i see his face every night. >> the accused shooter told the judge he was hoping to get bail so i could seek representation. >> we're at the initial kickoff. we have a long way to go. we'll see what happens as it unravels. >> the shooter in this case could get the death penalty. mike holgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> everyone charged has prior

records. a family's search for justice in the death of their daughter gets under way next week. the city is already preparing for the high profile case. >> a crush of media is expected to descend on charlottesville for the george hugley murder trial. >> it's try we have not seen here before. >> streets will be closed off next week for news vans. just like here in maryland there are no cameras allowed inside courtrooms in virginia. >> the first three rows are reserved for families and friends of the victim. he's from chevy chase maryland. yeardley love grew up in the area and they were dating when she was killed. hugley admits he kicked down the door and shook her as he head repeatedly hit the wall,

but his defense team says hugley did not intend to kill her. >> george hugley only learned yard learned yeardley love had died when he heard it from the authorities. >> my guess is that you're probably not going to persuade the jury to find not guilty. so if you're on the defense, you want to lower the level of risk. >> jury selection begins monday. hugley has been locked up since the crime. he's charged with first-degree murder which carries a possible life sentence if convicted. a sexual assault suspect is on the loose. police just released this sketch of the man who attacked a woman. it happened january 21st, just before 11:00. police are urging anyone with information to give them a

call. a positive sign for the economy today as the country's unemployment rate dropped to 8.8%. that's the lowest point in nearly 3 years. president obama says there's a long way to go. tonight he's calling on congress to avoid sabotaging the recovery recovery. the most important thing congress needs to do right now is stop taxes from going up on 160 million americans at the end of this month. they have to renew the payroll tax cut that they extended for only a couple of months. wall street is responding to the market. it t dow is up. it's the highest close in nearly four years. the s&p 500 is up 19, nasdaq up 46 and is at its highest mark is over a decade. today's sunshine adds to that positive mood as we head into the weekend. it's beautiful and clear as we take a live look outside. wjz is live with tim williams

and bob turk. they're updating our conditions. >> sun doesn't set until 5:30. look around the east. little cooler than it's been recently. out to the west there's a low pressure that's been developing and causing rain and snow to the north. that in some form will be moving to the east, basically passing across portions of virginia and the carolinas. it will be close enough to bring us some precipitation late saturday night into early sunday morning. take a look at temperatures around the region right now. it's still pretty pleasant. the normal is 48. it will get up to 50. and 43 down by the water. tim has more on that storm this weekend. >> it's definitely a monster storm for our neighbors out to the west. it's going to lose a lot of punch. the low is going to push to the south. so with the high we have in place right now, it's bringing

us warm skies and it stays dry and cold to the north. that's another reinforced high up around canada that's going to stay again up to our north and it's going to keep eating away at a lot of that moisture. it weakens as it moves through. it's going to be close enough that it can bring us light showers and maybe snow showers, but nothing that's going to shut our city down. we'll have more details coming up in our complete forecast. the patriots' quarterback tom brady is known for his work on the football field, but plow the super bowl quarterback is working with john hopkins to save the life of his childhood mentor. >> reporter: brady's mentor is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. the quarterback is also doing his part to make sure his friend finds a donor. as the patriots tom brady gets ready for the super bowl, the

childhood mentor who helped get him there is fighting the battle. >> he's been a great friend. >> he's been training brady for more than to years. now the coach is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. he's come to john hopkins for help. >> he was evaluated by the whole team. >> montgomery says there's a long list of people waiting for tran plants. >> it's -- transplants. it's reached a crisis point. >> that's where brady's star power comes in. recently the quarterback made a public plea for donors to come forward. he's also posted his picture with a link to donors.com. >> focusing on the crisis helps tremendously. >> only 20% will receive one this year. 30% will die waiting.

right now more than three dozen maryland troops are headed to afganistan. wjz is live. jessica cartelly has more. >> reporter: right now 40 guards are being sent overseas. they will be there for one

year. a ceremony honoring the national guard's aviation brigade. >> they've made a commitment and they stand strong to protect you and this great nation. 40 maryland troops will involved aerial medical coverage in the southern region of afganistan. >> we're a medevac. we'll be transporting any wounded civilian and military as well. >> today they join others serving around the world like in the place of the horn of africa, kuwait, and afganistan. >> reporter: their deployment comes after leon panetta suggested that things would then in january. it's the first time washington has discussed a possible deadline. >> in the time line, the transition will take place. it's already started in some areas in afganistan and u.s.

through the tunnel. expect 20 minutes to get through. on the beltway, the north side of the inner loop, still heavy there around to providence road. traveling on the west side inner loop, almost 30 minutes from 295 to security boulevard and problems continue on 70 in both directions. westbound from 29 to marriotsville road, very heavy as you make your way to the beltway. let's now take a live look. as you can see, things are lightening up there on the west side at frederick road. this report is brought do you by disney on ice. they're going to be here from the 8th to the 12th. you can get your tickets today. they 'been off limits to fishing for more than a decade, but it has not stopped their decline.

just to give you the update on this pretty afternoon. the weekend is not as beautiful as it was this week. we'll talk about that in a minute. 48 in ocean city. oakland at 40. the dew point is quite low. the air is still very, very dry. dew point is down to 27

degrees. 45 in bellaire and by the bay here, annapolis and also westminster coming in at 46. 50-degrees today. normal high, jumped up to 43. the record, 66 and the record low 4. it's the first time we've been below freezing in a couple of days. it won't be a major factor, but the last day or so, it's been coming out of the northwest. that brought us cooler air. now, there's moisture in the south. some of that is moving up to the north with mild air to the west. cold air just on the western side. it's going to heavy snow over portions of northeast colorado, portions of nebraska getting blizzard conditions. sunshine right now. tomorrow afternoon, look at the clouds on the increase as a warm front and low pressure begins to move in. it will continue on the weekend and slide down to the south. we'll be on the northern fringe

saturday and sunday. little bit of rain and snow mixing in on the northern sections of maryland. it may be cold enough. some areas could see maybe a quarter to half inch on the lawns. that would be early sunday before it clears out. north winds five to ten knots. temperatures around 41 degrees. i said 5:30. 5:29, which ain't too bad either. tonight, clear to partly cloudy, light winds overnight down to around 32. in the city, probably 38. some of the colder suburb around 27. sunshine in the morning. start to see some increasing clouds from the west. tomorrow's high, 50 degrees. tomorrow night, later on, a little rain, maybe early sunday morning a period of a little snow, sleet before it ends. not a big deal, but if you wake up sunday morning with wet snow and sleet, it will be over

>> until that happens, a grateful city pays tribute to a man who died serving their city. the commissioner was unable toy a tend today's dedication as he was at the chief of police convention in las vegas. a hartford county man is accused of leading a state trooper on a chase. he faces charges including dui and assault. he sped away during a traffic stop and rammed the trooper's cruiser. the trooper hit a fends, sending a rail through his windshield that hit him in the chest. he's recovering from minor injuries. a track coach is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl on his team. more on the suspect and the school involved vic. >> scott spear is free on bail. he's a track and basketball coach at richard montgomery high school. they say he had sex with the girl on his team at the

rockville home in april or maybe at least twice. a school spokesman said spear is on administrative leave from teaching and coaching. we'll have more on this story tonight at 6:00. we have breaking news where a teacher is accused of abusing children. a second teacher has just been arrested on charges of lewd acts on girls. mark springer's arrest coming less than a week after third grade teacher mark bird was arrested after committing lewd acts on 23 children. some alarmed parents are pulling their children out of the school. a massive snowstorm is hitting the denver, colorado area. hundreds of flights are affected. it could be one of the biggest snow storms the mile high city has ever seen. more than a foot of snow has fallen since the snow started thursday everything. strong winds are adding to the

dangers, making conditions difficult for emergency crews to do their job. >> it's hard for us to get out there. especially due to whether like this. it's hard for ambulances to trek on these roads. >> more than 600 flights have already been canceled. >> trying to go chicago. right now the flight at 5:00 is still available, but they're not too optimistic about it staying available. >> looks like we're going sit here for a good six, seven hours. >> denver public schools are closed, but at ft. collins, the university remained open. >> never had a snow day. >> they expect another foot of snow to fall before it moves out on saturday. it could take it one of the top five snowstorms in denver's he history. first warning weather continues with meteorologist tim williams who's tracking

this massive system. >> massive indeed. this is a large storm, even for them. the position of the low pressure system to the bottom of your screen is that counter clockwise flow, it's pushing in up the moisture right on up the foothills, right on up the higher mountain. as it gets to the top of the mountains that are several thousand feet in some areas, it starts to bring them out into the colder air. this storm system is creating its own problems because on the eastern side it's all a rain event. let's take a look at the graphic that shows how it's going to impact this region tonight into tomorrow. it's still going to be heavy snow for the areas around denver. it starts to mix as it moves into milder air. it's going to move into our air, but it looses a lot of punch. it definitely does not keep its winter characteristics. it's not going to bring that kind of mess to us. we'll continue to keep you posted for now.

chesterfield road. it's a personal injury accident. this vehicle flipped upside down at chesterfield, trapping the 28-year-old driver for a short period of time. since firefighters were able to rescue the man. he has been transported by ground units to shock trauma in critical condition at this time. this is a fairly remote area of croftton. they do have hawkins road closed in both directions as they continue to investigate. >> thank you, captain mike perry. let's check in with bob at the weather center. the forecast tomorrow morning, it will be chilly, temperatures around the freezing mark. rain still in the 40s early on sunday morning, late, late saturday night. probably back in the mid-30s. could see a little rain, snow mixture, particularly north of the city as pretty usual around here. tim is looking at the 5-day

bat. i'm coming back inside to you. >> oh, my goodness, tim. please do. okay, well two, american women -- women kidnapped but not before triggering a major security alert. the american tourist were headed to the town -- when kidnappers stopped their van with machine guns. it happened on the sinai peninsula. the kidnappers grabbed the women and their egyptian tour guide and sped into the mountain. they were reportedly holding the americans for ransom and later set them free. it was said they were tribesmen who live in the woods and accuse the government of ignoring their plight. the government has been in shambles since the uprising that ousted hosni mubarak nearly a year ago.

tensions across the country are growing after this week's deadly soccer riot. in cairo, protesters hurled tear gas cans back at police. the embassy in cairo worked with authorities to help get the u.s. tourists set free. tina kraus, wjz. armed militants abducted 25 chinese factory workers after forcing them off a bus in the peninsula. they were released the next day. federal prosecutors have dropped their investigation of lance armstrong. this ends a two-year effort aimed at determining whether he and his teammates participated in a doping program. armstrong has denied use of performance enhancing drugs. >> there's a big 60 minutes investigation of that too. >> well a misunderstanding on twitter gets two british tourists kicked out of the united states. they sent out tweets saying they were going to destroy america before they boarded a

flight for los angeles. when they met, we were met by border patrol agents and thrown in jail, but it appears that were mean nothing hard. they were using one of their slang words. >> if you're hungry and you're going to mcdonald's, you say we're going to destroy mcdonald's. you're going to get drunk, you say i'm going to destroy -- maybe a change of language is warranted here. >> yeah. on tonight's health watch, the american heart association is asking everyone to go red today. it's national wear read day and heart disease month. heart disease is the no. 1 killer for women in the united states. it includes pain in the neck,
